...Yeah sorry but doesn't work for me. Rape is highly disturbing. Child abuse too. But a game which treats rape like a joke throughout, and I'm supposed to be shocked by a rape scene just because it changes its writing style?

Sorry, not buying it. Not that it isn't conceptually disturbing, and I'm thankful you didn't post any images, but this isn't exactly emotionally wrecking like Lilya 4-Ever. The context is wrong, and that dampens much of its impact.

Its attempt to paint of Kou as all innocent fluffy throughout much of the game was too hamfisted to. Bad writing is ok when you're just joking, not when you try to get all grimdark.

And all this coming from someone who absolutely can't take child abuse or rape. I can't watch Lilya 4-Ever without being an emotional wreck for a week.

Yeah, that is one fucked-up movie and not because torture-porn but because of the, I guess, banality of evil or something.

Still, the Kou event doesn't come as a complete surprise or at least it shouldn't. The rape-scenes aren't written to be very humoristic but they come across as funny because of translation, I guess. There are several characters who seriously contemplate murdering Rance afterwards and the surrounding society constantly is shocked and appalled by his actions - even if they do admire his prowess on the battlefield. And by this time the player might have seen few disturbed rape-scenes, like what happens to Kenshin if Rance doesn't rescue her or the scene with the Ogres or several others. Furthermore, the game appallingly but truthfully depicts the pretty much complete helplessness of peasantry against the petty tyranny of their rulers or what actually happened to women in a town or keep captured by rampaging enemy horde.

It would be interesting to find a interview with a native Jap who might shed some light on the issue because I think there's plenty of stuff lost in translation in Sengoku Rance. I'd wager that plenty of the lulzy and ham-fisted or cringe-worthy stuff is because of the translation.

But who knows, maybe I'm attributing way too much to the developers and am overthinking this shit. Maybe it's just JAPAN, like this pic of girls running from raping alligators:

Torture-porn bores me. Moodysson gets it, the true face of horror, in the uncaring nature of people.

Most films that bug me like that come from out east. Gruz 200 probably has the most horrifying rape scene of all the time. That film is all about casual evil. Ugh. Painful to watch, but y'know, university obligations.

I have my doubts, but it's not really relevant anyway. We're playing the translation, and it doesn't work here. Original intent is not that important.

Women horrified at being raped before "their body betrays them" and they start moaning like cheap whores is something one can only see in Japanese porn. The pained expression on women in said porn is usually about as exciting as a nail-board.

Stupid shit. Works when played up for a joke, not otherwise.

Guys, we're talking about a hentai game that plays upbeat rock music every time the protagonist sexually abuses and humiliates a female character. There's nothing lost in translation about that.

Besides, it's standard fare for Jap entertainment to be ignorant to (or intentionally ignore) the concept of emotional consistency. It's very common for characters to act cheerful and slapstick-comical one moment, then totally serious and grimdark the next.

And yes, it is completely stupid juvenile shit.

And quick. Out of all those routes, Ran's route is the only that can be played fast quick with reasonable points left over.

My 1st game left me no points: I played around too much.

My 2nd is Ran game: got around 10~ points. Enough for a command fan start in third game.

Eh, after the first game you tend to be able to do much better. There is a bit of a learning curve involved. I think I'm on turn 55 or something and just finished taking out one eye, the honnouji temple event is long done, and I only have Takeda and Shimazu left (although Shimazu has Mouri's territories).

This game I may take a run at Orochi, although I hear he's an absolute bitch.

EDIT: And this scene, while disturbing, is still not the only contender for the title of "the worst thing in Sengoku Rance". I mean, it's pretty bad, but there's still some competition, especially since one of those things I'm thinking of isn't exactly forced, but rather happens because of some completely non mandatory actions of the player (and perhaps a bit of fuckuppery on his part). But anyway, lets not get ahead of the LP.
We should do a poll with an overview of each to see which is the very worst.

I’ve a different view on this. I think the game is being coherent and true to its internal vision. Even though the main focus is humoristic, bad things ™ happen in the game world, often on the level where they can be seen as revolting and “going too far”. As a hero, Rance is immortal. He can’t be hurt by anything. The only way he can be reached is through the women in his life. Thus the tragic fates that many women in Rance's harem have.

Rance is quite interesting protagonist. He was originally a pure anti-hero, but throughout the game series he has grown and developed unique set of morals. Sure, he goes around having sex with women, often against their consent, but on the other hand he takes great concern not to really hurt anyone. If the girl in question is in love with someone else, he doesn’t interfere (blowjobs/one night stands don’t count). He uses contraceptive magic because he got a girl pregnant and she had an abortion. Etc.

The seemingly uncaring and one-sided anti-hero is actually man with a destiny, and potentially tragic one (involving the great demon kings). Sometimes we can see glimpses of this reflected in Rance himself – the reason he is unwilling to stay in one place and commit to one woman comes from the danger that he is wrapped up in.

Rance is a bad man, but his antagonists are worse. That is what makes the whole concept work.

It's indeed sad times when one hentai strategy game thing's main character has more depth and interest than any recent shit. But that's a topic for another time. I have to ask, whiskey: When will you deal with the Orochi fellow (if possible)?

Also, aren't technically these demons some sort of spirits (and thus related with the youkai)?

PS: The possesed Nobunaga, before his sister discovered the corpse and shit hit the fan, Xavier warned Kou to not come closer. I assume Xavier would eventually rape/kill her anyways if she did not discover his secre, no? Actually, besides that child-rape scene practically anytihng of the demons is very disturbing and more gory than the biowhore shit, tearing someone from the insides and then slowly dismember another guy is rather extreme even if there wasn't any picture showing it.

We need to make something out of Rance's contemplative face too.

I still need to strengthen my Commander roster.

Orochi is something you should only attempt when you've a full (30) roster of commanders at their top levels and suitable gear. It simply is not worth it otherwise. Also, keep in mind that you don't have to complete the dungeon in one run.

And anyways, it is supposed to be the final ultimate challenge anyway (alongside the Demon King route).

Amusingly, the Demon King route is the easiest in the game. Since you never lose battle permits, you never have to actually fight the demon army in battle, other then predetermined castle battles which always have a set (and much easier to fight) enemy configuration.

Lithuanian Hitman? Anyway, that’s quite a witty joke.

For your information. I’m not attacking because Rengoku will transform as soon as the time runs out, his health will reset anyway. Be smart, don’t loss AP.

You almost had me going up until this point. Rance explained his philosophy vis-a-vis women well enough. When your stated life goal is fucking all women, no amount of shitty over-interpretation can turn that into "he's doing it to protect them!"

C'mon guys, I'm sure this is a great game and it's been a blast to read, but stop trying to make it something it's clearly not. It's more herpdederp than derp, ifyaknowwhatimean.

I wasted a whole fucking day playing this game. I couldn't stop. I just uninstalled it though, because I am a serious individual that values healthy, constructive behaviour. I can imagine after playing it through, even more than once, you kind of try to see things in the obnoxious writing. Or at least, you want to justify all those hours spent somehow. It's really horribly addictive.

Update page earlier.

BN, I would advice you to hold your judgment of Rance until the end credits. There are still some things you didn't see.
