My favorite games of all time, based largely on love of space opera, settings and world building:

01). Mass Effect 1
02). Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1
03). Star Trek: Judgement Rites
04). Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2
05). Mass Effect 2
06). Star Trek: A Final Unity
07). Mass Effect 3
08). Star Trek: Birth of the Federation
09). Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Dark Forces 2
10). Star Wars: Dark Forces

Some additional info:

- One of my first gaming memories is watching my dad complete Super Mario Land for the Gameboy
- The first console type game I ever completed was The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the Gameboy
- The first computer type game I ever completed was Star Trek: Judgement Rites for DOS/Win
- Early games that had a big effect on me include the above, a demo disk of Star Wars: Dark Forces, UFO: Enemy Unknown (aka X-COM: UFO Defence), Syndicate Wars (what a soundtrack!), Half-Life, and Sonic the Hedgehog
- The first western CRPG I remember playing was Ancients II by Epic Games, bought from a bargain bin... it wasn't good, but I still like blobbers a as a format, I find first person view kinda puts you actually in the dungeon like Tolkien's Moria chapters
- My first serious completion of an RPG was probably Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
- Although my first system after a DOS PC was a Nintendo Gameboy, I was late to console games, only having a PC most of the first two decades of my life, and missing the PS1 era entirely (playing stuff from that era well after the fact, buying retro systems)
- The first console I bought in it's own intended lifetime was a Sega Dreamcast, I only really started gaming more frequently with the Xbox 360, which I bought primarily for playing Mass Effect

Some opinions:

- I hate bosses these days, they are a drag, I am sick of them. I often wish developers wouldn't belabour the ending of otherwise great games, instead leave people wanting more. They have a place in some genres - arcade style games that people used to play around the TV in the 8 bit/16 bit days for example, or Devil May Cry/Dark Souls - but if you are there to explore, or be immersed, or for story, they can be an annoying barrier that prevents you doing what you actually play the game for.
- Gaming is like zen. If you make it into work, keep lists, it becomes a drag - it's honestly better for everyone, yourself and the industry, to just play things without forcing it. Put stuff down if you get bored, instead of trying to get your money's worth - playing one game you really like a year is better time spent than 10 you don't. The industry is always pushing bad ideas as if they are great. What if you don't know what to play, and people keep recommending stuff? Play retro and keep costs down.
- If you want to play JRPGs, ignore the notion that Final Fantasy is a good introduction. It is a poor example of the genre, full of hard to follow plots, intrusive cutscenes that remove player agency at unexpected times, and other hang-ups - instead a better entry point might be The Legend of Heroes, Fire Emblem or Suikoden. They all build progressively ongoing worlds like a western franchise, and their stories are more structured around things a wider variety of people are likely to care about.
- There hasn't been a good Star Trek game since around the year 2000
- The best Star Wars FPS games are still Dark Forces and Dark Forces II, with most nowadays lacking the atmosphere
- Gaming can be a very cheap hobby, just like reading - games/books are avalable for pittance, and people spend an average of like 50,000 in a lifetime on alcohol... so I would say it's downright wholesome enriching your mind with human culture compared to drinking a carcinogen and pissing it out, essentially a direct conversion of money to piss.
