Have you played a Tales game this millennia? You regularly have cut scenes with completely meaningless dialog interrupting gameplay. Every time you enter a dungeon you get 8 characters going "Lets go that way!" "OKAY!" "YEA! "LETS DO IT!" "uhhh I don't care" "UWU I'M A CATGIRL AND I AGREE UWU!" "YEA!" "OKAY BOSS!" It's infuriating they can't let you enter a dungeon and just explore or go into a town without the entire cast cheer leading everything said. They add so much extra useless dialog to skip or slowly walking away in unskippable ways. Pokemon has become a poster child for this.
if you think a 30 second skit is so annoying you should probably never play a visual novel, there you have hours of this type of dialogue. It's character development for when something interesting in the story happens you are more invested in the characters.
I played Digimon Survive and hated almost all of it for the exact reason. Most the dialog was the digimon agreeing with their tamers. It was entirely wasted time and pushing A to skip it over and over got annoying. I don't mind a dialog heavy game, I mind a cheer leading squad all having to say okay to a decision they could STFU and just do.

Visual novels being overly verbose is entirely up to how autistic the writers are. Played through Heads Will Roll Reforged and there is more gameplay than novelling there.

So you got exactly what you should expect from the genre.
"If you hate this type of dialog you should play a visual novel" "I did and I hated it" ..yes, I got what I expected from a genre I'd never played before because Visual novels are written by people not even fit for gas station romance novels. That's not the point being made though. Tales games are not visual novels, they're action RPGS. I don't want to enter the action section (a dungeon) and be hit in the face with dialog boxes every few steps. I remember playing one of the recent Tales and I got into a sewer where 2 characters were having a spat. You would constantly get interrupted trying to explore by the most inane and whiny dialog. It's dialog just to have dialog and it's fucking annoying. If I want to read a novel I'll get out my kindle, if I want to beat the shit out of a few giant rats and throw a fireball I'll.. well not play Tales games obviously.

It makes me less invested in the characters actually because I just want to skip all this trivial shit. If a character dies, GOOD, that means less drivel to click through.

If I were to read this kind of annoying, pointless, meaningless back-and-forth smalltalk between characters in a novel, I would stop reading ten pages in.

The problem of this style of writing isn't even that it's verbose, the problem is that it's shit. You may as well type random letters on your keyboard until you fill a page, and it would have the same amount of meaningful content as those types of dialog.

Muh character development

Dev can throw in any sort of useless drivel wasting time and people like this eat it right up. Need nothing of substance because the more empty the content, the more they can autistically headcannon the entire story until its a self insert reflection of their own fantasy.

Bethestard really suits you.

random JRPG encounters are a much bigger waste of time than a 30 second skit at the beginning of a dungeon

we are talking about story heavy JRPGs fucktard, the other person complained that tales games have too much banter, even tho they are short skits which pale in comparison to the slice of life segments in japanese visual novels. if he doesn't enjoy this type of dialogue he shouldn't be picking these types of games, especially persona is half a visual novel.

It's shit, no matter how you try to slice it.

My point stands. Calling it character development (a fancy way of saying you love bland personalities shining through) is just cope. The only people I've seen claim that are the chubby consoomer dorks who...actually now that I think about it they shill for similar games as you.

You should expand your horizons, maybe you'll eventually notice the difference between subtle character development and empty text.

I have the feeling you don't know what we were talking about and just butted in. Played any Tales games?

So you were shitting on something you have no idea about? A codexian classic.

Skits are a major part of Tales games and a lot of the character development happens through them.

Only obese millenial American women living alone with cats rave about that kind of "character development"

I don't rave about it, I'm saying there's a point to it. It's to make the player more attached to the characters so if they eventually face a crisis or die it's more impactful. My other point was that it's not that bad compared to other games who have a lot of slice of life stuff.

you seem very angry about this, are you aware that games are for kids? take a deep breath and hit your vape

IIRC, the Codex's 2019 GotY contest was open to the public. :M The best way to conduct a proper determination of game rankings is to ensure that it is limited to active Codexers and consists of rating games rather than a vote/points system.

I agree with Tales being shit. The only one I liked was the SNES game. Still, my point was only about Digimon Survive.

it's just filler random encounters.
Wizardry has a lot of that. Still great. The problem is not the random encounters, it's how in most JRPG the battle is literally "making big numbers grow even bigger". So you have characters dealing 9999 of damage as if that was even fun, each battle taking 10 minutes now because despite taking 9999 of damage, the enemy has 3 billion of HP. Every random encounter in Wizardry was a chance of getting your whole party dead and not because they were dealing 9999 of damage.
