Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
A better question would be what happened to physical copies.
Eh, this one is easy: STEAM happened.

No, game manuals started shrinking in size way before Steam was even an glint in Gaben's eye.

Yeah I remember manuals in the early to mid 00s, especially of bigger publishers, being nothing but a two-page sheet describing the controls. Those were easy to tuck into those DVD cases and didn't take up much space. They were really barebones and usually completely useless because the in-game tutorial covered those controls anyway.

Meh, companies and their piracy fears. I cannot think of any company that has ever gone out of business due to being pirated to death. Meanwhile, I can think of one major company that gained massive ground BECAUSE of piracy and ever since they started cracking down on it with attempts at "activation", have been losing ground: Microsoft. You think Windoze would have taken off if people weren't pirating it from work to put on their home computers? Take also: The widely pirated WinRAR and the trial that never seems to end. You think if they had actually made it a proprietary lock-in that it would have taken off? No, they did it on purpose, knowingly.
