What is the best thing to do once you've gotten out of the first dungeon? What is a good town to start off in, and where is the best place to get some quests and find some dungeons?

Look on the world map once you emerge and uncheck everything but cities and towns on the menu below. All the white blocks are the major cities and then it goes down from there. The darker the block, the smaller the city. To the southwest of your location will be a white block not more than 1 days travelling distance. Go there. Once there, activate the town map. Just northeast from the center of town will be a huge 'square' with lots of shops. Head that way, sell any loot, and get quests.

Where to get quests from is a good question. Depends on what you wish to do. If you wanna raise your rep with merchants, take quests from the shopdealers. Just choose 'talk' in the interaction menu when you click on a merchant. Those are usually the best quests to do when starting.

That's good advice, but what usually before I take any real quests is this: I head to graveyards and do some graverobbing. Weak monsters to kill or sneak past, good loot, a great way to gain experience before you tackle the real quests (or the real dungeons).

The graveyards are the only dungeons on your map until you start learning the locations of others via maps or quests. Graveyards are usually called something like "Coppersly Crypts" or "Woodsly Graveyard", and they are dark brown. (The scary huge dungeons are lighter).

For quests, I recommend either joining a guild or asking people about "work". They'll head you in the right directions.

Graveyards is a good thing, yes. But most vendor quests are simple 'escort me here' ventures that might have you up against one or two weak opponents if any at all. Another good hint: run and jump everywhere you go. :P

Yeah, but a starting character can get their butt severely kicked in Daggerfall if they accidently arrive at night. The monsters that roam the street are not really level specific and there is no way a starting character's gonna have a weapon effective against them.

You can usually outrun those ghosts, can't you? And an inn is never far off. Maybe I only escaped them so easily because I like having athletic characters...

Otaku,

you can start the game with an ebony dagger.

Which makes the ghosts just bothersome in packs.

Admittedly, though, that's always struck me as a little cheap. Not quite as cheap as my favorite trick (High Elves with Critical Weakness: Paralysis (they're immune, and the immunity overrides the weakness)), but always getting an ebony dagger kinda worsens the other weapon skills.

As for starting cities, why go to Daggerfall? Pretty much any provincial capital is guaranteed to have some fun stuff.

Also, shouldn't this be in Game Help?

I know about the Ebony Dagger thing, but you also have to be able to hit with it well. One hit from a ghost is almost guaranteed to paralyze a new character and, well, I think you can guess what happens from there.

And I thought this should be in game help as well, but I'm just going with the flow.

Choose any one of the multitude of cities. Why? They are all basically the same!!
P.S. Sorry, tried to avoid this thread; but alas, unlike the game; I can't afford the lure of the dark side.

Within a given region this is true with the exception of the three major cities. But the only way they differ really is in layout and the fact that they have a castle inhabiting them. Castles with some funky ass dungeon layouts, I might add.

The thing is, given the sheer size of the game (it takes over 2 weeks of realtime to RUN from one end of the map to the other), it's not surprising the cities all look the same. But I'm biased and of the opinion that this is a great game. It gave me many late nights of enjoyment that I will never forget. Just like FO2 and X-Com did. :)
