I know there's a saturation slider in the demo's settings, but damn, why the default look lacks color? And who the hell implemented the huge vignette?

In the window that pops up after the game crashes it says at the end of the line: "Shader compilation failures are Fatal."

Well, at least you're still alive, so there's that.

- no "invert mouse" setting within the game

More than a bit vague on the complaints of what the original got wrong.
Not to mention that complaining about them will work in their favor over IF the changes they introduce will turn out to be for the better.

Gothic 1 Remake | Making Of #02: Old vs. New
A New Journey Begins – With Respect for the Original and a Vision for the Future

Barcelona, Spain / Vienna, Austria - April 15, 2025: Today, developer Alkimia Interactive has revealed new insights into the Gothic 1 Remake. The development team offered another in-depth look, as part of their making-of-series, into the creation of their ambitious project: This remake of the cult classic will not only deliver a complete visual overhaul but also introduce systemic and narrative refinements that aim to elevate the beloved original into a modern experience.

"Our job was to find out what elements should stay exactly as they are and what elements should be expanded," explains Reinhard Pollice, Alkimia Interactive's Studio Director. Throughout the production, the developers found themselves constantly navigating between honoring the original while thoughtfully enhancing it with new ideas to make the experience even more compelling. Gothic 1 Remake aims to stay true to the original’s core narrative, while addressing long-standing issues: Plot holes, contradictions, and logical inconsistencies have been carefully reviewed and rewritten.

Creating a believable, breathing open world is one of the remake’s central design goals. The team implemented a detailed living world simulation where characters follow daily routines, witness player actions, and dynamically respond to events, even when the player isn’t nearby. "We’re not just configuring NPCs’ homes or schedules.", says Javier Untoria, Lead Game Designer.

Another exciting part of the remake is how the development team expands existing areas and and found inspiration in elements that were originally cut. The development team looked at areas that were empty in the original and fleshed them out. From mysterious dungeons to hidden paths and deeper interactions with orc culture, many of the game’s lore-rich aspects are being given space to truly shine.

Nice video. Reminds me of making of documentaries of the past. No trannies, just a bunch of nerds talking about making a good game.

New video, new demo:

https://www.thqnordic.com/article/y...de-updated-gothic-1-remake-demo-now-available

Barcelona, Spain / Vienna, Austria - May 9, 2025: There’s a new demo in town! Developer Alkimia Interactive has been closely monitoring and analyzing player feedback since the release of the Gothic 1 Remake demo - the so-called Nyras Prologue - in February. More than 15,000 players completed the survey, with even more feedback coming in via social media, Steam forums, and the official Discord server.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated - your voices helped shape the game and make it even better!

Thanks to these valuable insights, the team has been able to fine-tune the experience according to players' needs while staying true to the spirit of the original Gothic. The updated demo is available now, featuring, for example, faster animations that result in smoother interactions with the world.

Want to know exactly what’s changed - and what improvements are still to come before the full release? Check out the special episode of the Making Of video series, where the developers at Alkimia Interactive share behind-the-scenes insights and discuss upcoming improvements.

I've tried for some 10 minutes just now

Right of the bat, optimization is fucking horrible...
Here's 4 pictures comparing the 2 highest graphic presets ("Gothic" and "Alkima Overdose", the latter being max settings), and as a fun little game I'll not say which preset is which:

20250509161515-1.jpg

20250509161530-1.jpg

I congratule anyone that can spot any meaningful distinction between these images.

The only difference I was able to spot was the FPS difference: from 28fps to 72fps!!!

After fiddling with the settings, I found the biggest culprit is the "Global Illumination" - reducing it from Alkima Overdose to Gothic, increased the framerate by a whopping 30fps
The 2nd heaviest setting is "Shadow Quality" - the same reduction increased the framerate by around 10fps
All the other settings give very marginal gains - for reference, the 3rd most demanding setting "Reflection Quality" and it only increased my framerate by 2 or 3 fps - so I left them in the Alkima Overdose

Honestly I hope for their sake they revise all the lighting because there's some just mistakes here that make this project look more like an amateur's asset flip:
HELLO FRIEND! HAVE YOU COME SEEKING THE LIGHT?

WHERE IS THE LIGHT EVEN COMING FROM!??
20250509162450-1.jpg

WHY IS IT SO DAMN DARK!?
20250509162903-1.jpg

There's this interesting mechanic with the torches where you can stick them on the ground... and stack them on top of each other

Overall, on the technical side the game still needs alot of polishing to do...
The animations are janky, floaty and the contextual animations (like the pan handling and sitting on the benches) are overly long - a funny consequence of this is if you squash a meatbug, the character locks in place but since the big is still scurrying about, by the time your PC smashes his foot on the ground the bug is already well way out of your boot's range, but he still gets magically squashed :)

But aside from these techinical woes, I think this remake game can end up being decent
Will play the rest of the demo at some other time

I understand that in the Gothic universe, the orcs are, at the least, a credible threat to human civilization, so they couldn't be that primitive.

Also, in Gothic 2 their elite units clearly use way more advanced armors and in Gothic 3 they are mostly civilized, which felt particularly weird, because they act and look much different than the first two games.
I guess this will help bridge the gap between their depictions on future remakes if this is successful enough.
