RPGDot has a preview of Gothic 3 based on some discussions with the developers. Here's a bit about freedom:

Gothic 3 wants to get away from the adventure-like structure of the first two games. In them you had to do a lot of things in exactly the correct order to reach the next chapter. The developers strive to avoid this in Gothic 3, in favour of more options and more freedom for the player, for example by offering a pool of quests to choose from rather than forcing the player to pick a certain one.

Hooray for freedom and quest pools! One thing I really didn't like about the first one was the whole A to B to C aspect of the post faction part of the game.

That is most definitely awesome news. I don't get how the Pirhana Bytes can make great first halfs (Especially in the the original game, the whole social aspect in the Old Camp was excellent) and then slowly crumble into mediocrity by the game's end, turning it into a linear dungeon crawl complete with *shiver* jumping and lever-pulling puzzles.

That's right. The first half was surely more original, fresh and RPGish. The point was that it wasn't heroic. You didn't feel as some chosen one (although you were one actually). You just tried to survive there. Gothic2 is good also, but only AFTER Gothic1. I mean, you felt the whole beauty of Gothic and then you just go on killing things, living in the world, etc... fun, too.

And I'm just waiting sooooo impatiently for Gothic 3....
Too bad my comp will not be able to run it... WEll, i'lll upgrade it then! ^_^

Gothic was PB´s first project. They made a lot of mistakes and the game got delayed again and again. At some point the guys who paid the bills lost patience, gave them one last deadline and told them the game will be released then, no matter how good it is. PB had to hurry to get Gothic finished in decent quality.

And it did.
I actually don't understand why so many people whine about controls and challenge-rating: it was perfect!
Inventory was a bit clunky, but not too much, really.
And the battle controls were FUCKING GREAT!
When the Gothic3 comes out, i'm gonna use the old-style controls, for sure.

Hope it's more like the original....some bad ass atmosphere in that game. Infact i think i'll reinstall it now.
Right you are. The most vivid and live RPG world i've ever seen. Even Fallout pales in comparison somehow (but compensates it with much superior roleplaying and freedom).

That's damn good news. The linear progression in Gothics 1 and 2 was my major complaint, given that for the most part they are an excellent execution of a persistent and dynamic gameworld.
