There's an interview with the developers of Gothic 3 over at Gameplay Monthly. It's definitely one of those interviews with overly generic questions, not at all targetted at the game itself. Just filler, really. But hey, here's the first one:

Please introduce yourself and the game Gothic 3.

My name is Blaine Christine, I'm the Executive Producer at Aspyr Media and we are the North American publisher for Gothic 3. Gothic 3 is, quite simply, the ultimate single player RPG experience! The Gothic series is renowned for being the originator of the living, breathing world gameplay where the player's actions have a distinct impact on their surroundings and the NPCs in the game react realistically to situations created by the player. If you are a fan of deep, involving RPGs, you will love this game!

Well, something's getting deep there.

"What feature of Gothic 3 are you most proud of?

My favorite feature of Gothic 3 is the archery. When using the bow and arrow, the arrow arcs realistically, so the farther you are from a target the more you have to aim your shot above their head. Combine that with the pincushion effect (all arrows stick realistically in your target) and you can have hours of fun just perfecting your archery skills in the world of Myrtana."

Now, there's a lot of features one could be proud of in making an adventure-RPG. Unique involving story, never-been-seen-before-A.I., diversity and complexity of quests, blah blah blah. But arrows that arcs and sticks? That's like writing a novel and asked the same question answer "The font".

Both interviewer and interviewee has their moments of idiocy in the interview. It's almost the exact kind of PR bullshit Oblivion had. Only that it comes out late compared to Oblivion.

Btw, is there anything wrong with using third person nominative instead of first person for publishers unrelated to development? "Our game is..", "We focused on..", "We felt that...". As if the stupid fuckers made the game themselves and know every in and out of the game. They think that the concept of a 3rd party publisher is too complex for NA people to grasp, maybe?

edit:

Since we have been involved in the development for about a year, we were able to help make some key decisions to ensure the US audience doesn't get a game that feels ported from Germany

I didn't know about this. Is it true? Not that it does anything at all to discredit my point; just that it's kind of sad in my opinion.

As far as modding tools, there will be an editor available after the game ships that will allow players to generate their own content, but the date of this release has not been determined yet.

Nice to hear this actually, though it will bring every kind of unnecessary stupid developer-wannabe morons making stupid mods.

The Gothic series has always been about making the best possible single player RPG experience possible, so all efforts are focused on making this vision a reality

For anyone who is hungry for a unique RPG experience in a truly immersive story and world, Gothic 3 provides the ultimate single player experience
Since when did they start to sprout this kind of drivel?

From a gameplay standpoint, this will be the most "Americanized" game in the Gothic series. Since we have been involved in the development for about a year, we were able to help make some key decisions to ensure the US audience doesn't get a game that feels ported from Germany

Americanized gameplay= streamlined gameplay?

Proverbius mis-billed this a bit. It's not a dev interview with Piranha Bytes in Germany, but rather an interview with the producer/publisher over at Aspyr Media in Texas. It's Aspyr's job to make this game sound mainstream and appealing so it sells like hotcakes Stateside, so I wouldn't get too worried about those responses.

Americanized gameplay=dumbed down.

This interview was pretty scary, almost everything in it could have been said by Pete about Oblivion. I sincerely hope it's just some PR flak spouting bullshit rather than an accurate reflection of the game.

The US isn't the only place games are censored. Here nudity is taboo, but in Europe it's extreme violence. Not that I agree with either as long as there are ratings, but there ya go.

thanks for us, Lazarus morons...
for sure it's a stupid mod.

About Gothic 3, they are doing what is necessary to sell better, so they tell what ppl need to hear. I think they deserve it, they had bad luck with the Gothic 1 & 2 publishers.

Only playing the game will tell us if it's as good as Gothic 1 & 2, but I have good faith in it.

I hope the audience in my country doesn't get something that feels ported from the USA.

That sounds just like Todd in that interview, where he explains how "omg awesome" poison apples are and how much fun you can have with them in Oblivion. (couldnt find that one to quote it)

But as it was mentioned before, this was the interview with the publisher, so i wouldnt worry about it too much. Publishers are always like that, and they can promise or tell you anything just so they can sell the game.
Just look at the interviews with G3 dev team. You will never hear such bullshit from them... well atleast not in such amount  And if im not mistaken devs said that G3 is action game with RPG elements, not like this fuck who claims that its a true RPG.
Interviews with idiots like this one piss me off. They do more damage to the game then anything else.

His job is to trick stupid people into buying a good game. He seems to be doing an admirable job.

What did Nazis ever do to you, huh? =/

Isn't that description of Archery pretty much exactly how it worked in Oblivion? I remember the only case where Oblivion's pincushion didn't work was when you got a non-killing head shot and the arrow would just show up someplace.

HI :)

Germany has, for obvious reasons, censorship of
swastikas of the kind that was used in the 1940's.
(in Germany). This also affects movies, & videogames...

This somehow meant that *return to castle wolfenstein* could not (I think) be sold in Germany, since it had swastikas and was about Nazis.
[Even though the game was about shooting down
Nazis....].

Germany has its own video game rating's system, called the USK for the same reasons.

More on topic:

I have read some German websites which featured interviews with the developers of Gothic 3. And I have seen the video feature or demo from Games Convention in Leipzig. And I can tell all you codexers that the developers of G3 do not lie to the RPG crowd.

They tell it like it is. And the way it is (as far I my German language skill + 5 understood it) was this:
The head of the G3 developing team did indeed talk about the game, but in a slightly toned down voice.

He also explained how the gameplay etc. in Gothic 3 was. And I thought that the story, gameplay etc. did look very nice & great.

The German development team did stick to what German do best: They just told the audience solid information about the game without to much hype.
And then the demo from Leipzig did also show some areas of the game which really looks nice.

It is also my understanding that some American publsihers do hype games - mostly, of course, to sell them. And from my experience, in the American Market, you need to hype games a little more than in the European Market.
