And another game goes the way of Kickstarter, this time it's Grim Dawn, an "open-world ARPG" and a "spiritual successor to Titan Quest" developed by "former Iron Lore veterans." The stated goal is $280,000, and the anticipated release date is August 2013.

Grim Dawn is an action role-playing game for PC and a spiritual successor to Titan Quest. For the past two years a small team of former Iron Lore veterans at Crate Entertainment have been developing Grim Dawn with their own, improved version of the Iron Lore engine and tools; the same technology used to create Titan Quest.

We’ve listened to years of feedback from the Titan Quest community and continue to do so every day on the Grim Dawn forums as we strive to improve upon past performance and make this our greatest work yet. The creation of Grim Dawn is guided by traditional design and old school sensibilities, with innovation only in the areas where we feel it truly improves the game and isn't just a gimmicky back of the box feature.

Grim Dawn will:
  • Be DRM free!
  • Include robust modding tools so you can create your own worlds!
  • Be faster-paced, with much more satisfying enemy hit reactions and deaths.
  • Allow you to fight house-to-house as you lay waste to enemies and the former owner’s furniture in the process. Break through walls to open up new areas of exploration!
  • Feature a more open-world design with randomized elements that will greatly enhance replay-ability. Each play-through will be unique with "set-piece" spawners that can turn a patch of wilderness into different types of enemy camps, a traveling merchant caravan, etc, each with their own unique art.
  • We don’t control where you go; you do! If you don't want to follow the main story, you aren't forced to. Non-linear progression allows you to unlock new areas by repairing bridges, defeating enemy blockades, etc, as soon as you have the resources and power to do it. Race ahead into higher-level areas and get pwned, we'll warn you but we're not going to stop you!
  • Let you combine any two of five distinct skill classes, each with multiple skill trees in which to specialize. Spend money to reclaim skill points if you’re unhappy with your build.
  • Have a refined loot system that drops far less junk-items, produces more uber randomized gear and ensures more consistent rewards from hero and boss monsters.
  • Immerse you in a gritty, dangerous, Victorian era fantasy world where humankind has been pushed to the brink of extinction by warring otherworldly powers.
  • Give players meaningful quest choices and the ability to visually change the starting town as they help to rebuild and secure the future survival of humanity.
  • Let you ally with NPC factions to earn rewards and unlock new quest lines. Be wary though, aiding one group can make another your enemy!
  • Join up with friends in coop-multiplayer through online match-making or play over LAN and experience the full game together.
  • And so much more…
Sound overly ambitious?
It might be... if it weren't for the fact that these features already exist! Well hey, we're not just some dudes rolling up in here, looking for you guys to take all the risk in funding our dream gig. We've already put a lot of our own blood, sweat and tears into this labor of love over the past 2+ years to get it where it is today. We've developed a ton of cool new features and the core gameplay is already quite fun, if we do say so ourselves. What? You want to see the gameplay? Well, here is our latest sampling! (hopefully just enough to get you hooked...)

Interested? Then head over to the Kickstarter page to learn more and donate if it's your thing.

To me, this looks better than D3. Pledged $18. I do doubt that they will rise the amount they want though.

Titan Quest was one of the most boring and bland games I've ever played. Staying far away from this one.

Lots of people would have it now though (due to steam sales and the like) so it may succeed due to that.

Curious, as I think it'll be better than TQ, but probably not enough to put up cash, shadowrun will probably come first for me.

Yeah, all this kickstarter "inflation" is a bit cunty to me... They want 18 bucks for the lowest tier? Well, fuck them... If Fargo can sell Wasteland 2 for 15 $ they fuckin' could too. Anyway, maybe I'd support it if I had a lot of money, but for now, except Wasteland 2, there is only place for Shadowrun in my heart (if they start answering some relevant game questions).

The pre-sale edition they've had pre this had it at $19 or so, if they'd had it at $15, probably piss of a large amount of the purchased fanbase (who are probably the rusted on types who have kept the dream alive)

Ok, I didn't know that, but won't the fanbase be mad for not getting the kickstarter extras anyway?

Nup, they're covering that, saying if you already have a key, you should only pay the difference (so if you paid 18, pay the 18 and get the 35 tier, etc)

Seems kickstarters are starting faster and faster these days, and everythime asking for more...they just don't get it how much projects there are to donate already, people will run out of money. This is one of the "serious" kickstarters that has great chance of failling...280k is a lot of money.
There are quite a few genres that got shafted by big industry/publishing. The people who are apt to donate for this are probably not the same who donated for W2 (or SRR).

While I doubt they'll get even close to DoubleFine/inXile's success due to the market being far less starved for Diablo-likes than TB RPGs/oldschool adventures, I'd be surprized if they didn't manage to raise the 280k. After all this'll probably appeal to a larger audience (though they're probably far less inclined to support the project) and Crate already have very much to show for themselves. Their bullet-points also make them quite distinct from the other HnS'es (at least from D3).

I've been waiting for this game quite some time, but with Paths of Exile looking so good so far, it will fill my hack'n'slach needs and for free. I do wish them the best in completing the game though - Torchlight has been too "happy" for me and Diablo3 just does not do it anymore with the focus on online functionality, cutting of PvP and marketplace.

Titan Quest is my favourite hack'n'slash game. Grim Dawn has been looking good so far, I hope kickstarter will help them to finish it.

Definitely not my cup of tea, gave them the symbolic $1 nonetheless. There's absolutely nothing disgusting or unusual about the project, one of the legitimate uses of Kickstarter is as a glorified pre-order platform (and this is by no means restricted to video games, I wonder how many people actually take the time to look at the model/quality of the various other projects on the site) that helps speed up development/add features rather than bring single-handedly bring a project to life. It just happens to be a lot more effective, because of a combination of factors like exposure, synergy, tier system, the psychological allure of breaking thresholds, etc. These guys are basically doing the exact same thing as AoD at a probably very similar stage of development -- the difference being that last time I checked, AoD was somewhere below $8K after two weeks, whereas Grim Dawn sits on $34K after a few hours. That is a gap way larger than the difference between each subgenre's respective appeal (plus you have to factor in that people aren't exactly starved for hack and slash aRPGS) and shows the power of Kickstarter for this type of pre-ordering campaigns. I certainly hope it works out well for Dead State.

Lol, for that I would pledge 18$. Too bad I don't have any. W2 and Shadowrun took my monies. :(
