GTA4 is running like shit

I've just installed this game because I'm completely bored. I've already heard how bad the game runs even on decent specs. I've installed the 1.0.0.4 patch and the game runs like pure shit. Is there a magic option which can miraculously make the game playable?

CPU: E6300
RAM: 2GB
GPU: HD3850 512MB

Ok I admit my PC isn't the best one but at least it can play most games pretty well.

i have a hd4850 and amd 6400+ dual core, after trying it out i decided a better solution was to get a xbox360.

The game ran like shit, even after patches.

For pc, gta san andreas with multiplayer servers(rp servers!) is better.

Ran perfectly on my outdated rig. Though I probably set shadows and aa as low as possible. Just fiddle a bit with the graphical options.

The sad part is that Saint's Row 2 runs even worse.

That one I just can't get to run smoothly no matter what I try. What a shitty port. Almost as bad as prototype which for some reason or the other totally fucks up my sound and grinds my pc to a halt within seconds.

GTA4 is really hard on CPU's and your's isn't very fast.

GTA4 doesn't support AA at all.
Saint's Row 2 has a decent framerate once you turn off fancy lighting, but the driving stutter remains no matter what you do, which makes it unplayable. It seems they aren't even going to try to fix that so that game is a lost case on PC.

It's been awhile since I installed in and played it on my pc. I just remembered that changing a few graphical options did make a huge impact on the framerate.

Wasn't it decided shortly after they were released that they were both indeed shitty ports from consoles?

Or do I remember correctly that GTA4 wasn't ported...?

Yeah, it's a shitty port... a shame since the game is very good. In fact, it feels more like a aRPG than most games advertised as RPGs nowdays (ie. Borderlands?!?).

I have a i7 cpu, Geforce 260 and 6mb of ddr3 ram and I still get shitty framerates...

I think he did.

I remember getting decent performance with mid settings.. But when it came to playing MP it ran terrible.

I remember Skyway praising the game was so good that it was "above mainstream".

The game runs not only bad outdoors, but also fucking inside the buildings with those messy textures and simple models. The starting cutscene for example stutter so horribly even worse than playing Crysis on High setting with my rig.

Search the RPG codex original GTAIV thread. There is a rather simple fix that boosts performance a lot. With it, I played it with reasonable framerates in a similar rig.

Ran fine on my 8800GT, 2GB Ram, 3.2Ghz Dual core. By fine I mean some stuttering here and there but nothing a hardcore gamer worries about; are you a hardcore gamer Heresiarch? :glare:

SR2 runs like shit only when you're driving, so like half of the time. GTA always runs like shit. Things like 20FPS while the GPU usage is at 35% are perfectly normal.

SR2 also has the added benefit of being the less boring of the two.

For GTA4, I just turned off shadows and turned down the draw distance. It performed fairly well after that.

For SR2, I turned every setting down all the way and set the resolution to 800x600... Still couldn't get the game to stop stuttering during the driving sections. SR2 was completely unplayable even using the min settings.

Play GTA:VC instead.

How would you rate VC vs GTA4? I've played VC several times before but the farthest I can get is the mission in which you first parachute down on an estate and then kill stuff and then go chase some bad guy on the road. That mission was fucking hard to me so I dropped the game there.

Also, what's your guys' average FPS on GTA4? After some messing around (disabled shadows, lowered viewing distance) I've managed to bring up the average FPS to 25~30. But still feel a bit stuttered and definetly not smooth like games like Prototype.

I'm fairly certain that this mission was from San Andreas... not Vice City.
Either way, both VC and SA are vastly superior to and are more enjoyable than GTA4

Drop texture quality. Also, I remember the game ran better with disabled page file. Memory management in this port is a total clusterfuck.
