Well, if you allowed Mao to die, you are out of luck. Someone hanged him on a tree already. And when you don't have spare units for invasion of Japan, well you can't invade Japan. You'd probably need to wait for US to kill Japanese fleet.

The last patch definetly broke something about Germany's expansion, as a consequence of the cordon sanitaire joining the Allies too eagerly.

On an unrelated note, Italy really needs a national focus tree rework and expansion.

And I'd hope that they'd allow for a focus-triggered faction including Fascist Italy and the Soviet Union akin to the already existing one in Germany's current national focus tree (a.i. the 'Unholy Alliance' focus creating the 'Moscow-Berlin Axis' faction). Could see an Italian focus path leading to the proclamation of the Italian Social Republic (which should've existed in the base game anyhow for the historical path), maybe adding Nicola Bombacci as a possible advisor and ending with the option to proclaim Italo-Soviet cooperation.

It's beautiful though, and the thousands of tiles allow for map maneuvering that looks quite realistic.

As somewhat of a noob, I feel intimidated of playing one of the Great Powers. Seems like it'd require lots of headaches to manage everything from navies (which you can straight up ignore with most of the other countries) to plenty of zones of occupation and multifront warfare.

It definitely drags out the playtime. You just need to pause more to do all the things, but I wouldn't say it makes it more difficult per se.

Navies are a nightmare, though. It is completely unclear what you should build, what to put on ships, what things do, their exact effect, it's all a big black box.
And if you look for guides, you'll find 20 guides giving you 40 different ideas, mostly contradicting each other. Ask ten people about it, get twenty opinions from it.
In the end, frankly, as long as you do anything (e.g. focus on mines) and keep up in tech, all that matters is that you outproduce the enemy.

I use Darkest Hour's Manual for a general guide, although things have changed a lot since then. It's free to download from DH's steam page.

Honestly speaking, Bulgaria may be the surprise best nation, or at least the most versatile one in Bosphorus. No lack of deranged "little dictators" to larps as neither.

Question: Any recent mods that make the game run faster?

So... anyone playing Old World Blues? Honestly I think it deserves its own thread at this point. 3.0 just launched.

Its awesome, lots of new cool content and the wasteland is more lively than ever.

Been playing as the Mojave Chapter. Sunburst was pretty easy, I had loads of preparation and went with Lucky Old Sun so I pretty much watched General Oliver thrown all his men into their deaths, and then took them all out. After that, spent some time holding out the Legion, peaced out, went after the Fiends and New Vegas. So far so good, but the Legion attacked me before the truce ended. So I had to wait for years until their manpower ran out.

The world is pretty dynamic and agitated. Hangdogs went on the warpath across all of Colorado, killed Lanius (lol) and then Texas. THEN they joined Caesar's Legion. White Legs and Eighties took over most of Utah, and the Leggies joined the Legion. Texas Brotherhood turned into the Provisional Republic and took over almost all of Texas and a good chunk of Mexico, before they killed him. Monctezuma has taken over most of Mexico.

I do think the NCR is pretty lame in this one. Only things they did was attacking some minors and beating both the Western Brotherhood and the Steel Rangers - I thought they were goners, honestly. They haven't attacked anybody for years. Good for me, because if the NCR attacked me I would be plastered - or at least forced to position more units in their borders. Legion seems too passive, too - they just keep attacking me forever, even after Aurelius took over. In practice, the Legion is forever trying to get to me, except they never will get through my fully-fortified Colorado river full of Outposts, Bunkers and Coastal Fortresses.

Commander K'eeen got out of his cell, but the Sky Reavers beat him one second flat. lol. I thought I was fucked, for one second.

I would have popped the Dome of the Big Mt but I'm too yellow to do so, I suspect the Think Tank would destroy me.

Since you've mentioned mods, would y'all recommend any of the Cold War mods and if so which?

if you want hoi 4 with some heavy alternate history flavor and story focus: The New Order: Last Days of Europe. although i would say that TNO has some optimization issues currently

if you want a polished hoi 2 cold war experience: Arsenal of Democracy

I keep wanting to play something else, but every night I start an ironman USSR. I just like the high stakes - you spend 5 years preparing and either you sweep through Eurasia, or you get locked in a stalemate, essentially lose the campaign, and there go a couple of hours of progress.

I keep trying to play a Fascist Yugoslavia and conquer the Balkans while being allied with Italy, but so far only once did I manage to get Hungary to ally Italy and form the Pact of Rome before Italy gobbles Albania. If that happens, then it's all fine and dandy since I can pass that national focus which hands Italy's Adriatic possessions over in exchange for me joining its faction and then I can also conquer Albania since being together in a faction overrides Italy's guarantee on Albania.

Oooo, they finally got the next big update done? Will have to check it out at some point before The New Order updates. Will have to check out what the update adds, judging by the Workshop page Texas and more Midwest has been added to the map.

Also, the Enclave Submod that it has is the second best HoI4 mod, it's got exquisite detail (as afforded to by a mod that focuses on just having one extensively detailed and varied campaign). We'll see when it updates to new OWB.

I missed that 3.0 had launched since they created a new page for it on steamworkshop instead and kept the old one as a legacy version.

Yeeep, they did. Get hype, because its fucking cash.

Yeah, they revamped and added all of Colorado (with a lot of Van Buren content, btw), they added Texas (using a lot of FOBOS and FOBOS2 content but in non-retarded ways) and Oklahoma too.

Its a bit funny that right now, New Orleans is the end of the world.

Yeah, they did that because that old page was linked to a single profile and that made it a bit ass to deploy smaller updates. Now its a new account connected to multiple profiles, making it easier.

Just curious, but in OWB how are you guys building divisions? I was doing 10s and 20s like you would do 20s and 40s in vanilla, but in 3.0 it seems like the 10s just aren't worth it. They seem to melt in the face of anything other than just plain old infantry, costing manpower that is extremely precious. The 20s seem good for holding, but their ability to push seems highly limited.

Just played two quick OWB games, so I can answer.

In my Chichen Itza I went with 9 Infantry 3 Demoition battalions with a demolitions, fireteam and anti tank support. It required a good amount of micro to break the relatively narrow frontline with Aztlan but it absolutely demolished once the front thinned out and the enemy couldn't constantly rotate in fresh org troops. Probably worth mixing in more advanced stuff eventually but I didn't bother.

In my Vault City game I went with 7 infantry battalions with the same demo/fireteam/anti tank support. Reason being that otherwise I didn't have enough manpower to hold the long battle lines up there.I spent most of the rest of my factories on air power. Literally no one fields an airforce so you can just go with the CAS (Triplane Attacker line) to demolish anything. With 150 planes and 60 divisions probably 1/2 to 2/3rds of the damage I was dealing was coming from the planes despite the fact that the planes cost about as much as ~15 divisions.

In both cases obviously I went for asymmetric warfare and wasteland tactics. -0.5 width and a total of +30% breakthrough is what you want to push with infantry (which is something you should never really do in HoI4 unless the front is very sparse due to how stupidly weak breakthrough is on non-tanks, but oh well). If you are a nation that can get implants like Vault City then use those, they are wildly unbalanced and turn your infantry into space marines on the level of power armor. If you can get power armor then mixing in 1 support power armor to every division should give you armor advantage against 90% of the chaff incredibly cheaply and let you cut a wide swathe through most AIs.

Also in general you pretty much always want to rush techs, not sure on the specific difference but techs in OWB seem to have much lighter ahead of time penalties. The economic ones and infantry weapons can be gotten way ahead of time so that you are pumping out the best stuff immediately.

EDIT: Probably worth keeping a line of the weakest infantry equipment going just for garrison duty.

Question for OWB players, how does one go about colonizing the uninhabited territories on the map? Is it tied to the focus tree system or what?
