Also you can't use flamethrowers against czech population. And Slovakians are not listed as an allied country of Nazi Germany. C'mon.

I was checking out the latest HoI IV dev diary.
Here we're graced with a nice inside look into the offices of Paradox Stockholm, HoI division:

Close! That's René Nicod, an obscure French commie. HoI's tech lead programmer apparently really wanted to include him in the game's latest update.

Wow Paradox workers are working really fast. I was reading thread "why official focust trees are so bland and unpaid moders did superior", and before I managed to finish reading first page I found they deleted it.

    C'mon.

Did you guys see that technical dev diary?

"We added new features and thanks to our performance tweaks, the game is as fast as it was in the previous version!"

    Uhhhh... yey?

As a programmer, I feel bad for belittling other people's coding effort.

But as a gamer... am I supposed to be impressed? This game is a badly-optimized piece of shit. They seem way more interested in spending time doing whatever than actually making it run fast. The reqs are literally "runs on a fucking toaster" and yet they can't get it to work decently.

I am so glad I was given it by HeroMarine and never paid a single penny for this game.

Was studying to be one until relatively recently, actually. Eventually I was just going to Uni to eat and study programming in their labs, then I later quit entirely. The losses in 2018 were probably the last straw.
I dedicated myself to programming full time since then. Best thing I ever did, I should have done this a decade ago.
Got my first job last semester, hopefully will get another one soon.

Aww, thanks bro! You are a super bro, dude!

Posted some things in Pdox Plaza saying it like it is about HOI4 garbage tier performance.
Got a bunch of disagrees, of course.

I forgot how the Paradox Plaza Forum is essentially thousands of gringos fanboys on a Findom Relationship with Paradox.

Paradox has been treating the HOI4 fans like trash and they still simp for them, incredible. I think even women can't get this level of simping.

When people complain about their treatment over at another forum, it helps to link to the post in question...
...Because usually said post does not present the complainer in a particularly good light.

Anyway, it's true that the supply rework is not going to be computationally simple, so it is good news that it does not supposedly make the game slower.

(I never got why exactly people wanted a supply rework in the first place though. Something about surrounding the capital being a stupid exploit?)

That said, I do want the game to be faster, and I've been looking through changelogs for the past few years and been sorely disappointed almost every time. They seem to be putting a whole lot more effort into minor fixes with the newest focus trees than anything to do with the game engine.

All I'm saying that Brazilian here might have received his disagrees because of the silly NoSQL suggestion at the beginning. This I heartily agree with: SQL won't make anything faster, and neither will NoSQL. Games which tend to require having the whole world (game state) in memory at all times just don't have any need for what SQL might provide.

There was this one blog post by I believe a Stellaris developer who detailed his attempt at optimising the loading screen.

The gist was, IIRC, that the Clausewitz (?) engine used a library to handle file system overlays, to enable modding and its need to override files from the base game. It also let its user read the contents of zip files like they were part of the file system. (Basically like Unix mounts.) It was all very handy for the developers.

He happened to notice that threading didn't make the loading go any faster and debugged why. It turned out that the library did a check to see whether the overlays had changed on every file access, and this check was quite expensive, but to make it worse, it had a big lock on it, so this check couldn't be threaded.

Needless to say, the overlays don't change after the initial file system setup was finalised at the very beginning of the game launch, so he patched the check away. This made the loading much, much faster.

...I never noticed that the soldier in the above picture is supposed to be female, or Russian for that matter. I just thought she was German, because of the blond Aryan hair.

The Soviet helmet being used as decoy is a giveaway, but more importantly the Germans didn't really employ female snipers as far as I know, while the Soviets were historically exceptional for their enthusiastic enrolment and propagandizing of women Nazi-killers.

Roza Shanina, killed 59 Nazis. Girl Power!

Nina Lobkovskaya delivered 89 souls from their servitude to national socialism. Slay queen!

Natalya Kovshova, credited with around 300 kills, killed herself and her German captors with a grenade when she was finally captured. RIP you chad witch.

Aliya Moldagulova killed at least 78 Hun invaders before she was killed in action. Like many other women snipers of WW2, she was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Be still, my heart!

Last but not least, Lioudmila Pavlitchenko killed at least 309 hitlerites before the Nazis finally ran out of soldiers to throw at her. Sometimes the trigger finger is a woman's sexiest attribute.

And there were many others, lest we forget. :salute:

From snipers in ww2 to drone operators today, women in war seem to be only good at killing unaware men from a save place far away from the battlefield.

Now they released patchnotes. Let's scroll down to my favourite section.

Literally one fix that might have a real effect on game speed. Sigh.

EDIT: I just realised it's the same fix that was included in 1.10.6 already, released five months ago. (A lot of the patchnotes are duplicate from 1.10.6.) More sighs.

Played Red Flood a bit, and ... eh.

I really like the idea of it and if it was properly implemented I could see it being quite fun, but for the moment it's just way too buggy, unbalanced and unfinished.
Accelerationism just doesn't stand a chance unless you are a major faction.

Tried to play as accelerationist Pharaoh Finland (yes, really ) four times and it's just pointless to even try.
The event that should make you join the French faction just bugs out in 50% of cases (or it is actually RNG-based, which makes it even worse, something like that shouldn't be RNG-based).
The event that makes you invade British Egypt (yes, as Finland, really ) spawns 5 divisions - two of which in Finland with no way to get to Egypt in time, three of which in Egypt with no hopes of surviving the first month. Of course, that also puts you at war with Brits + Allies. As lonely Finland or Finland + helpless allies.
    Funny, but totally pointless endeavor.

There are also dozens of things that have no image/description/effect (like some mil. advisors).

No matter if you join France or not, it will first make peace with Italy, losing some territory and then get completely crushed by Germany in less than a year. Every single time without fail. It's like France has all its troops on exercise and Germany just rolls over it (while it was France that declared war...).

Maybe something to check out after another year in the oven.
