The way I see they think they have more pull than they really have. Still, I am interested to actually see how this plays out.

My take is that the majority of Harry Potter fans don't care about woke/progressive/whatever shit the media constantly talk about. I am going to go as far as to say that the same is likely to be true for other things as well - otherwise Kingdom Come: Deliverance wouldn't have sold as well as it did. The fake controversy about treatment of women directed at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt by feminists (and their supporters) is another similar case worth noting where it didn't hurt the game whatsoever.

All in all, I am sure there are plenty of people who will buy the game solely because it is part of the Potterverse. If it's half-decent (for the mainstream taste) it may do even better.

you'd pass over a game with magic as its core interaction mechanic.

How the game deals with magic is more important IMO. If the game is all about magic but spells aren't deadly, it sucks.

Anyway, an game which I din't like sorcery despite everyone else liking magic there is Dragon's Dogma. I played mostly as an Ranger there. Sorcerers are boring, press two buttons and pray to not be interrupted for dozens of seconds and them see completely over the top devastation. Magic Archer the best magical class in the game. As they are amazing not only at range with lots of powerful magick bow attacks but in melee too with immolation spell.
