Riskbreaker beat me to the punch.

So um. In just over 12 months, the dev managed to release half of an episode. Which means, assuming the same pace is kept, the full game will be out in Q1 2024.

Thank goodness for early access boomer shooters...

I assume he won't release the entire episode this way, maybe the rest of it will be released in one big update. And you shouldn't conclude that he is making these maps one by one, only starting the next once the previous one is released, rather than all or most of them being in some stage of completion by now.
In any case, this is developed by one guy, not even a small team, in his free time. So some slack ought be cut...

Loving this game a lot more than I thought I would, one of the most straightforwardly enjoyable of the throwback shooters. Just beat the level "Granny's Valley", here's my reaction:

This has to be the first boomer shooter i follow that will get out of early access.

(no really, there are too many of them stuck in EA hell, i was looking for some game recently that had a Quake 1 sci-fi/base or Quake 2 vibe and the only game i could find that wasn't in Early Access was Perilous Warp - which i already finished months ago and was very short)

Yeah, it's always nice to see early access dev who isn't a lazy, worthless cocksucker that makes little progress but hundreds of excuses instead. It's out now, lads.

I beat it today. It was pretty good, a solid 7/10. Definitely worth playing if you're into this kind of game. There's a lot of sewer level/underground/bunker action but it's pretty competent and I really liked the outdoor areas despite not understanding any of the czech commie lore plastered everywhere. Actually found the (episode 2 & 3 mainly) boss fights to be quite difficult on the Very Hard difficulty, which is something after Dusk (and most other throwback shooters) was so easy on its equivalent (the highest non-bullethell difficulty).

Tried it, it's good. Not the most amazing boomer/old-school/whatever shooter but pretty solid.
I appreciate that there is no bullet sponges so far and the lack of any issues concerning the optimization.

You can also hold a bottle of wine with you which acts as a portable medkit, neat.

Someone please explain to me how this got done by one guy yet Wrath: Aeon of Ruin is still in early access Hell.

Based on what i saw posted (mainly by skacky), my understanding is that Wrath lacked an engine and tools programmer to provide the designers and gameplay programmers with the functionality they'd need. Also Quake 1 was most likely not that great of an engine choice even for retro 3D purposes as QuakeC is very limited. Quake 2 or even better Quake 3 would have been a better "retro engine" - especially the Quake 3 engine since unlike id's other engines, it was actually designed to be used by 3rd party developers. Of course an engine programmer could also get rid of QuakeC from Quake 1 but Quake 2 already did that anyway.

In comparison Ion Fury had no such issue because the Voidpoint's main programmer is also EDuke32's main programmer who has worked with the Build engine for years. And the HROT developer made everything by himself, engine included, so he wouldn't have the issues the Wrath developers faced.

i always found qauke 1 engine ugly af but this game is pretty fun and creepy.

This game looks substantially worse than Quake 1 ever did so engine has nothing to do with it.

That said, it's not so bad once you see the game in motion. At least it looks consistent in what it tries to do, and use of shadows in places also helps a bit.

If the gameplay is good and the level design isn't shit i wouldn't mind giving it a spin.

My opinion of the game actually improved as the levels went by with the third episode ending up being my favourite. A very good game.
What the fuck was that final level tho?
