I understand it's supposed to parallel the opening scene. But I don't get what Kano speaking directly to the reader is supposed to mean. Throughout the story, his imaginary interlocutors are primarily his former victims (plus Higuchi and Keiko, which would imply repressed guilt perhaps?).


Sorry about necro-ing this thread, but I was also thinking that because the last segment is from Keita Tanaka's perspective, you can interpret that last scene as depicting Tanaka's death in a more oblique way - that is, he got shot and is now Kano's new imaginary friend. The last scene is therefore from the PoV of the imaginary Tanaka.
