Just to be clear, buttons are worth the bandwidth
Not that I'd notice button lag

Did I seriously just read that you can't have a discussion while being civil? Last time I checked, being uncivilized adds literally nothing to a discussion except venting and attacking the other person as opposed to their arguments.

Every culture defines questioning that culture's basic beliefs as ''uncivil''. There are loads of things you can say that will make people outraged and call you uncivil, even though you didn't insult anyone.

Do you seriously think that rendering 500+ animated gifs a page comes with no cost?
500? citation needed. Most weren't even animated ffs.

It doesn't on my PC. I always had several tabs open with zero performance impact. They weren't even large gifs.

Post your system specs.

your browser will be using 90%+ of a single core
Is your PC 20 years old? Be honest.

So for those not keeping up, here's what we know so far:

Arguments against buttons:

People will get their feelings hurt and kill themselves!!!!
You (allegedly) cannot run the codex on an old, single-core potato and still have enough processing power left to watch porn and play Halo.

Arguments for buttons:

They're cool and fun.
They limit the amount of spammy posts with no value.
They're cool and fun.

Arguments against buttons:

Contribute nothing to discussions.
Are used mostly by people who don't want to discuss. Their removal triggers them.
The Codex runs better.

Arguments for buttons:

They let me feel like a badass.

Fixed. I'm all in for the return of a few select buttons, namely:
  • Funny.
  • Agree. No need to repeat the same point twice. If you want to disagree, comment on why.
  • Incline and Decline. These are mostly for comedic use, though they have their uses.
  • Thanks!
  • Informative.
  • it is a mystery: again, comedic use.
There are probably a few others.

I notice none of the negative buttons besides the nebulous "decline" made your list.

What a weird coincidence. :M

I'm on an actual spaceship. No joke.
You don't know you can turn off notifications for ratings? For 3 years on the Codex, you didn't turn them off?

You can only turn off notifications for rating altogether. You can't select which ratings you would like to be notified about. So I had to deal with "shit" and "retadred" if it meant I could see what people actually enjoyed about my postings through Brofists, Incline, etc.

To morons it looks like a coincidence. To people who are somewhat smart, it makes perfect sense. Of what use is saying:

Planescape: Torment is great

And having 20 people comment

Keeping the "Agree" button stops that unnecessary spam of repetitive comments. On the other hand, by removing negative ratings, you force people to comment. And when you force them to comment, you are also encouraging them to explain why they disagree. Even an elementary school student would understand such a basic concept.

We definitely need "cuck", "retarded", "shit", "facepalm" and "decline" buttons back. The rest are better off gone. If your positive reinforcement cannot be expressed by a simple brofist, it's not worth expressing. And the absence of 100500 meaningless and idiotic buttons like "it's nice weather, ain't it" or "i had a big poo today" is truly the blessing from THEE LORD.

We want buttons and we want more of them!

:yeah:

This is because we know DarkUnderlord will bring the buttons back. If we knew for certain he won't and he will never change his mind, it's obvious your posts will be different. Because that's how it literally is in every other English-speaking forum: no one takes the time to comment "I disagree" and call it a day.

Do you seriously think the Codex was different before buttons? It's always been a shithole where trolling is considered a work of art. The button parade just adds to the palette.

A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Is someone saying here that the fear of negative ratings dissuade some people from posting? Seriously?

If true, they should be brought back immediately.

It's good to have something negative in the toolbox imo... like when the 200+nth newfag starts life on the forums with the usual "Actually PST/FO/TOEE/etc was shit!!" attention-seeking routine one can ignore the threads, but when they seep into other discussions I'm not particularly inclined to start composing detailed answers yet again. Rather take a quick dump and move on, less attention rather than more.
