Could do without the fraps stutter on some of the videos, but otherwise

edit: This one also has some cool visuals, though the guy shooting it seems to like his car a bit too much

: It's shit. ARMA 2 could do graphics like that and render the entire city at once with all pedestrians, each of which would have fully realized AI and interact with the world dynamically. ARMA 2 isn't on consoles though which explains why the Codex prefers GTA4.

Fuck this shit, wait until you see ArmA 3!

On a more serious note, GTA IV was the worst of the series, no fancy graphic mod is gonna change that. What's the point of being able to shoot people, steal cars and burn the city like there is no law, but you can't even turn off your cellphone? My real life obligations are more plausible and allow me more freedom than this "sandbox" game...

Your ignore list.
Vice City had the best story of the new GTA games, with San Andreas having the most varied gameplay and sandboxy to it.

I remember when I first tried GTA4 and was appalled by how much less of everything it had compared to SA.

GTAIV also takes itself way too seriously.

Both valid points, which is why I actually pegged Saints Row 2 as the winner in the last contest.

One of my favorite moments in San Andreas was finally stealing a jet and zipping over the massive amount of land I'd comparatively been forced to crawl around before. Seeing an area and then remember the series of events that lead me there. After a long ass game like that, you build up a surprising amount of memories.

Anyway, I just figure if someone is going to replay GTA IV, this would be the way to do it.

After falling in love with the hook and parachute in Just Cause 2, I don't think I can go back to just driving and running around. Also, JC2 had pretty smooth controls for airplanes, GTA SA on the other hand, was pretty much undoable.

Personally I loved GTA V though the dickwad cousin and Slav accents might have had something to do with that. Capping that fat junkie Russian by the riverside also remains one of my all-time memorable gaming moments.

With the Ballad of gay Tony expansion they also got back into their stride regarding insane missions and fun stuff to do.

Anyway, mod looks mad props.

EDIT: Awww, shit. Mod won't work with the latest patch.

I don't like to be all serious about a videogame, but wasn't the GTA4 hero often referred to as a "Dirty Baltic peasant" by other characters? As in, not a Slav?

Actually, one Russian villain character hated the Baltic hero's guts.

/nitpick off

Xor, if GTA4 takes itself so seriously, it would never have had a mission, where you zoom in on a man's telephone number from a balcony, call him up, and snipe him.

The game had all kinds of over the top missions, just like any GTA game. I do remember that I kept pushing a particular local poster to play and finish the game. He was inclined to dislike it, but afterwards came out thinking it was okay.

Not to mention the job interview assasination. Get a job interview, nice suit and then the whole hilarious conversation with the guy interviewing you just before you kill him. Game was however a little less over the top than its previous versions, which was remedied with the Gay Tony expansion.

I really liked Ballad of Gay Tony but it had too much San Andreas and not enough Vice City. Minigames out the ass and the story felt kinda rushed. Still definitely a return to form.

But The Lost & Damned though? Man, that shit was awesome. Even came with Road Rash.

I played an old PSX copy of Road Rash again awhile ago, and damned if it isn't just as atmospheric and fun as I remember it. One of the few games my uncle had on his 3D0, and definitely the best.

Those stupid live-action scenes at the end made even losing hilarious.

Indeed, JC2 is the best of those games out there. Sure, the story is waaaaaay weaker, but these are the kind of games I play just for lulz, and JC2 has a nice balance of style, it feels fun, but doens't feel full retard like Saints Row.

Am I the only found that found SA to get kind of... stale? I got to the casino city, found myself playing less and less then just quit. Just didn't feel as fun or memorable as VC. It was bigger and had more to do, but didn't feel as good for it.

It wasn't just that it was trying to be too serious (as is often commented), but that it didn't know whether to take itself seriously, or play it for laughs. Some of the cut scenes (the Russian boss's wife seemed to very much stick in my mind) were written and played very well, but they didn't sit well at all next to the daft missions and out-there characters.

Had the designers convincingly settled on either gritty imigrant story, or the regular GTA wacky style, it would have been the better game for it. As it was it came across as two ill fitting styles mashed together.

Never got around to any of the DLCs.

I know what you mean. The Las Vegas city just isn't as fun as LA or San Francisco and it feels more like you're just passing through to do some extra bullshit that doesn't matter or they're trying to tie together the game with GTA3 (the mobsters) and Vice City (Rosenberg and that british rock guy). Comes off as really tacked on.

It's not like their station DJs, businesses and other details didn't already tie the trilogy together. Just listening to the radio on the way to a mission can get you details on where Lazlow and Fernando Martinez have been since the 80's of Vice City, and setting up where they eventually land in III. Adam First even calls up a station in the aftermath of a mission while he's out hang-gliding.

Then of course there's your adventures with Catalina before Claude arrives.

Radio continuity is a different thing than directly referencing the previous games. San Andreas took a more direct approach to tie together the series and with exception for Claude I think all of it happened in Las Venturas.

edit: Btw, am I the only one who thinks the radio stations are often more entertaining than the actual game? I actually ripped the audio so I could listen to it in my mp3-player. I'd never hear all of it otherwise.

Yep, Episodes were a massive improvement in SP department. They even removed the shitty buddy system. Ballad Of Gay Tony was the funniest one, but I liked Lost and Damned as well for that asshole bikers atmosphere. Haven't seen any other games do it. Also, Episodes had more great tracks in radio stations, or maybe it's just that it felt fresh after hearing the same shit over and over in GTA4 MP.

Anyway, that mod seems like it needs supercomputers to run. Myself I use VisualIV for singleplayer (comes with folders for both episodes too, especially recommended for Lost and Damned) as it removes that washed out look, makes the game more colorful and doesn't reduce performance.

Some other references are;

-The Donald Love/Avery Carrington mentoring

-The Adventures of Phil Cassidy (hell, including LCS and VCS he appears in four of the last generation GTA games)

-El Burro and his porn

-The Forellis. Oh lord the Forellis. I'm honestly surprised the Forelli Family even still exists.

GTA IV was great. If you want stupid stuff in a game play the Saints Row series, if you just want to drive cars then get Driver/Midnight Club/Need for Speed/Gran Turismo. Since GTA3 the GTA series has been all about the story, and I think GTA IV and its expansions did that very well.
