Imperator vs FoG Empires on history

I haven't played either but I'm planning to get one. I'm not looking for a general comparison, as I've looked into that, but for an opinion about which game is more history rich--e.g. depth of detail about characters, cultures,, religions, major events, etc. I've read that, in this regard, Empires has more "flavor," but knowing Paradox games, Imperator is bound to be more historically accurate in other ways (number of countries represented). Which game would an ancient history geek appreciate more?

I think it boils down to what you're interested in specifically. FoG Empires if you're primarily interested in the military units of the time, Imperator: Rome if you're into the wider historical situation, the different cultures, political systems, the fight between autocracy and democracy.

They've both been updated since release, Imperator drastically so. But fundamentally it's still a Paradox game, and your enjoyment may boil down to whether you prefer those, or the combo of board game and tabletop wargaming (if you own Field of Glory II also).

They also have slightly start dates, FoGE in 310 (with a DLC at 550) BCE, and IR in 304.

It's impossible to capture all of the maps in detail without a million screenshots, but here's some of what's going on:

Hope that helps any. They're both pretty cheap on Steam at the moment I think.

on the back of a T34.
empires doesnt take any liberties considering the time frame.
otherwise i havent seen anything that seems out of the historical time frame ( my two armchair historian cents).

since the game starts in 310 you can play with all the succesor states that were alive that time period, plus the old mainland greek powers plus magna greacia and them " archimedes build another!" syracouse.

I don't know FoG but by the youtube vids it seems focused on war and expansion, in which case I'd say both games complement each other well, as Imperator is more about civ-building, pop/culture management, tech-trees, etc.

If you pick Imperator, dont forget to use Invictus mod.

RPGHipsters innit.

Everyone that dismisses IR fails to say anything about why it's shit, which tells you a lot.
