Is it trendy in RPGCodex to dislike Bethesda, Bioware, etc?

The Codex is right in regards to Oblivion. That was a fucking awful game, considering what had come before from the same team. It deserves all the abuse it gets from Codexers.

In my opinion Bethesda have slightly redeemed themselves in making Fallout 3, which while not excellent, wasn't a bad game, and giving Obsidian the chance to make the brilliant Fallout New Vegas. I'm not expecting great things from Skyrim but I am prepared to give them the chance.

Well, I'm mostly with the OP here.
Can't speak for DA, as I never played it but I did enjoy Oblivion and FO3 for a while. Not without mods though.
But I've come to expect that from Bethesda games anyway.

Anyway, they might not be the masterpieces, but they aren't bad either.
Although, admittedly vanilla Oblivion is pretty hard to enjoy.
At least the magic system was an improvement from the fucked up magic system in Morrowind.

Now, I don't really expect any of you wannabe-elitist bigots to admit you enjoyed playing them during your 8 playthroughs.

You fucking little cunt

Your pespective of an outsider is naive and uninformed, even if you think it is clear-minded. There's a series of causes as to why a game is liked or not. We are an intellectualist community, so we don't discuss about our feelings and first impressions, and we're not about to discuss yours. Try to figure out the arguments and you'll see that it all makes sense. Perhaps there is a bit of hyperbole going on, as you say, but no one except Volourn can't make the distinction between figures of style and content with a minimum of effort. Of course, there's also a fair amount of posters who never post anything worthwhile and spew out the general opinion, but that is needed : it is what makes rpg codex a prestigious magazine, the fact that people are willing to follow its general concenssus... more or less.

For example, to help you a bit here, the reason why games like Fallout 3, Dragon Age, and so on, are not liked, are more than a simple immediate jugement that you, as an ignorant and candid little cunt, can spew out. You have to consider the history of roleplaying games in general, design standards, litterary standards, what is expected, what are the hopes and dissapointments, what is creative, what was done and what could be done better, and so on and so forth. All of this culture is assumed on these forums - without it of course it seems silly, because well shit, everything seems silly to an outsider who doesn't get the context.

I know I'm being trolled, don't worry. Everything is a big troll. Derp. Fuck this shit, where is my armor and lance i have a tournament to go to soon
Quoting an epic post. :salute: :salute: :salute:

Yes very trendy, but that might have something to do with shit quality of said games

See, this is where I disagree. The word "quality".

Take Oblivion vs Gothic 3 here. Upon release, Oblivion was light years ahead in terms of polish and performance and bugs. Isn't that "quality"?

oblivion had a good launch? quit reading right here

anyways i care less what the thread says but im pretty sure everyone hates bioware for recycling content for 11 years straight now. and bethesda? well todd howard is absolutely full of shit. I would have preferred wordswordswords to "i saw a mudcrab the other day, nasty creatures"

i dont mind mainstream titles but oblivion is painfully mainstream down to the game design.

Oblivion was a massive improvement compared to Morrowind. I played for more than 100 hours creating two characters, an archer and a wizard

Only 100 hours? 400 hours for each character is required to properly enjoy the distinct difference between character classes in a detailed fantasy world simulation such as Oblivion. And that's without the expansions that easily double the content.

Okay I am back. See my new thread.

I think I had to go through the rite of passage first. I am beginning to understand what you guys are all about.

Last night I played Dragon Age and it was brutal. I yearn for Gothic 3 now...

Some people in this thread think I am trolling.

You do understand that Gothic 3, Ultima VII and Arcanum are three of my all time favorite RPGs?

My point is, Oblivion and Fallout 3 are not AS BAD as you guys say they are. In fact, I think they are good. Not great, but good.

I always worry about people who are so far to one side that they have lost all chances as a reasonable discussion.

"Reasonable" is very rarely 'in the middle', 'moderate' or being conciliatory towards stupidity. I often hear your argument in political and religious debates where people assume that if you come down on the left or right of an issue, you are automatically 'extremist' or 'irrational', which makes as much sense as saying the correct answer to every questions is "maybe".

I generally could not care less about writing quality in RPGs as long as I don't have to read walls of fucking text(I am looking at you crappy overrated Planescape!) but when the game play is bad AND the writing is SO abysmal that it cannot be ignored, every single flaw becomes glaring.

Fallout is a classic tactical, isometric, turn-based RPG. You simply cannot make quality RPGs that are real-time because this kind of breaks that fourth wall and makes your character's abilities rely on your own button-mashing twitchery capability. As a first person shooter maybe Fallout 3 is not as bad but why the FUCK did they have to drag Fallout's name into this?! It is like someone buying the license for "Donkey Kong" and making a "Donkey Kong 4" that is a turn-based, hex-mapped war game.

If this was really Drog do you think I would have taken the time at 11:50pm Pacific time to sit down and write something this long?
We've had IP-banned trolls drive to the county next door to try and register a new alt. Writing a 10-minute post at midnight is peanuts by comparison.

(not suggesting you should do that, just explaining why the regulars here are likely to be suspicious)

It depends on how it's done more than anything. Some of the most interesting discussions I've read on here were started by a newfag talking love about a game the hivemind hates. Hell that's how Volourn introduced himself!

Sigh. I'll rise to the potential trolling.
Its because they are both popular and flawed. Yes there are worse games out there, but few as successful.

Yes, of course. If one makes a compelling argument for or against a game that Codex likes or dislikes, the join date doesn't make their point automatically invalid. One just needs to make a somewhat stronger case.

No. As a first person shooter fallout is terrible.

As an action / rpg hybrid it's good fun, though you have to turn your mind off for a bit.

In terms of the original point... They can't all be classics or head scratchers. Sometimes you just want to watch a blockbuster and soak in the action.

I have the same take with oblivion. I played it a bunch of the xbox, where my gaming is mainly action oriented / no thinking involved, but hated it on the computer. It also depends on the comparisons and competition that are implied by the hardware. Fallout 3 is a very strong action / rpg hybrid on consoles, merely an average one on computers.

And if other people don't see it the same way as me? Well, fuck them. Obviously you want to encourage people to like the same stuff as you, but if they don't, who cares? No need to fight a war over it every time someone says one negative thing about a game you like (except for when it's fun or the person is fairly reasonable... and by reading the boards you'll quickly decide whether or not the person can actually communicate rationally, or if they're just a slobbering company whore / hater).
