I'm playing Wasteland 2 for the first time, and it has been... alright. One thing that's bothering me is the 7 man party size. It's too much to manage, IMO. It also leads to considerable overlap between skills and makes the game just a tad too easy on Ranger.

So I was wondering if bring the party down to 5 would potentially make the game better. Anybody else play like this?

As an aside, I got that fucking robot from southeast of Highpool and he literally just melts everything.

I found that Ranger, while called hard, is more like normal in most RPGs. Consider bumping up the difficulty if you usually play on hard.

I played with a full party. I made sure my created characters could handle all the skills and then just took along whichever NPCs I found interesting.

Most of the recruitables are pretty crap, with a few that are pretty much optimized or close to out-of-box. I don't find that they decrease difficulty significantly, but my created characters are already reasonably solid and end up doing most of the heavy lifting anyway.

I just finished the game with 4 custom ranger girls. On ranger difficulty. Some fights were pretty hard but it's all doable. I took on no NPCs.

plan ahead by reading what the game companions have as skills and then make your own 4 accordingly.
for surgeon and possibly medic i would overlap with 2 members having them, that way if your first surgeon kicks the bucket the 2nd can revive him.
