Is the Codex dying? (2024 edition)

It has been very slow around here lately. Compare that to last year around this time when we had several big releases back to back it felt quite lively, with some new blood coming in even but I don't think they stuck around. Now that I think of it, what did even come out this year? I guess the Starfield DLC will be out this fall, that's at least hype. Other than that kind of a slow year? It still feels like it's the same 15 people posting here though.

Compared to the closure of many other other forums in the past years, the Codex does seem to handle quite well actually

It's increasingly hard to use the forum because about 75% of the time the same handful of people will just harp on about culture war shit instead of games, and even if the conversation does miraculously turn to games, people will be overwhelmingly negative. Which was always the case on this site but people used to be very funny when they ripped into games whereas now it's mostly just repetitive boilerplate whining.

It doesn't really feel like the same site it was when I joined and it's not a huge surprise that a lot of quality posters jumped ship over the last decade, and that new users are typically repelled. There's good threads on here for niche topics (especially if you actively set out to make them yourself) but for discussion of any new releases the forum is mostly a washout, except the tactical subforum which is still pretty solid. The forum drama also used to be a lot more fun back in the day.

That's the problem—I’m not excited at all about this, and no one besides you is either. There's nothing big coming out, and right now, I'm just playing modded versions of old RPGs and strategy games, and using VTTs with real people when possible. It's not just the Codex; it's summer, and it seems even more dead than last year.

If you consider culture war cringe traffic not sufficient enough to satisfy you, you can leave to greener pastures.

That type of traffic is useless to the Codex anyways, and it shows by how (unfortunately) pitiful the RPG board is there.

2024 is shit for RPGs, 2023 had a decent chunk of games, good or bad, that increased interest in talking about RPGs.

There's barely any content being posted at all (even something that's been sitting for who knows how long not being posted).

It'll bounce back. There's highs and lows in everything.
