The Codex is eternal.

The most evolved and enlightened people will always gravitate towards forums.

Forum users are the internet aristocracy.
Indeed, I'm so proud to be part of this aristocracy. A lurker? Come join us in the prestigious RPG Codex!

Codex is a 20+ yo forum for a niche interest still active in 2024. That says everything.

It is also one of the premier establishments for gentlemen on the internet. Sometimes I even drink fine whisky while browsing the threads.

Haha, yeah, I was kinda the same: forums are for the plebs. Real computer enthusiasts hang out on IRC or use BBS messaging.

I always thought forums are pointless because why would I want to start "arguments" about my opinions with total strangers. Well, I still think mostly the same, but you can get useful recommendations on the Codex from time to time. I see forums mostly as searchable databases of information.

For me forums are like the old mailing lists and Usenet, only it's a different format.
Never used IRC or BBS myself, IRC because I'm not interested in idle chatter and BBS because of the phone bills.
I get the impression that of the above mentioned Discords are most similar to IRC.

Depends on what you're doing. E.g., for development related tasks, troubleshooting, discussing things, etc. short feedback loops via real-time chat is important, otherwise everything would take ages and 10x longer.

But it can be a time-waster if you use it for idle chit chat, yeah. On the flipside, forums can be an even bigger time waster if you multiple elaborate 5-page replies every day.

Yeah, it's basically IRC++.

The biggest difference between Discord and IRC is that IRC is decentralized whereas everything you say on Discord is being recorded and analyzed by the company.

IRC you can just host on your computer if you want privacy and don't trust "them".

Yeah, just treat anything and everything you do on the internet to be on public record, forever. Then you won't get any surprises.

People behind 20 proxies and 15 VPNs get regularly busted if they really do some serious shit... So yeah, IRC won't save you if you're trying to overthrow the government or something.

Discord, Gmail, etc. are just public services you can use for free. I don't give a shit that they mine "my data" for whatever purposes. Good luck to them.

Discord also controls what you can talk about. For example they don't allow channels about piracy, gambling etc. So for groups like that IRC is still used today.

Maybe they don't allow outright blatant piracy, especially when done for commercial gain, but in our DOSBox Staging Discord we're dealing with "abandonware" DOS games all the time with zero consequence. So does the eXoDOS Discord, and numerous other emulator and software preservation related Discords.

So I haven't seen this to become problem in practice, and surely there are certain activities that should be rightfully banned.

In general, I'm pretty sure if you don't do obviously very illegal things and criminal activities you're good.

I don't use discord anymore but I've been on a couple in the past that have been spammed with banned content by scorned members with an axe to grind, reported and then taken down by the admins. It's not the end of the world because the admins don't usually care enough to follow up and check if someone's made a replacement server, but it's a pain and you inevitably lose some people when it happens.

Make the Codex Great Again!
Considering our staff is one Jew, one tranny and one vaxxed NPC (none with high gaming standards) that is hardly surprising at all.
One is a Jew vaxxed NPC
One is a trannie vaxxed NPC
One is a vaxxed NPC

One is not vaxxed, not NPC and not a trannie.

As an illustration, just look when everyone in this thread joined.
Sorry but that's bollocks, I lurked for years and I assume others did. Some people you can tell came from a faggy imageboard*, were being edgy and shitposting for the sake of it is all they know.
Join date is a retarded thing to focus on imo.
Yeah, my join date is recent and yet I remember the Dex "closing" sometime at the end of 2011. I also remember SuicideBunny's passing, I didn't know him or even engage with him, but he was a fellow Vistula tribesman so it got to me a bit. I've been visiting the Dex probably from around its inception. Sure, most of my impressions are not as deep as they would be if I had been a member, most users were an amorphous blob spewing opinions and game info, but I still have many memories from simply lurking. I'd like to emphasise that this is my first account, I've never been banned, I didn't forget I had one. I'm just that weird guy in front of the bar looking in through the window and watching people have fun (or beat each other senseless with bar stools). One day I just decided to step in.

Is the Codex a good place to be?
