Is Ultima Online any good?

On the surface it looks pretty good and immersive and a lot less like just a time sink like most MMOs. Is the free version worth it? From what I've read the only major thing you can't do as a f2p is owning a house.

Might be more worth to find something newer, what are you mainly after in ultima online?
I think eve online would probably be the best "modern" option cause it looks pretty good, runs decently, and behaves in a similar way to ultima online, at least in spirit.
The population is much higher as well.

I thought EVE online was a space thing?
Anyway:
Ultima 6 online

ultima 1-3 online via ultima 4 multiplayer

I swear there was a ultima 5 online.

About Ultima 7
The tactical combat system of previous Ultimagames has been replaced with a real-time system where only general strategies can be set and party members fight automatically, the player taking control of the Avatar alone. Combat pauses when the player accesses the inventory. Leveling up system is similar to the previous games, the Avatar’s parameters increasing automatically once a sufficient amount of experience points has been accumulated. The Avatar and his companions must regularly eat in order to stay alive.
So Dungeon Siege long before DS?
