Sawyer stated that the goal of having no bad builds was more important than having no builds clearly superior to other builds.

And thanks to that he made every class feel boring.
Exactly. The thing about BG2, and about almost all of the old classic RPGs, is that they were extremely unbalanced.

A fighter would always outclass a mage at low levels. A mage would always outclass everyone at high levels. Who cares? It's fun.

I wish developers would stop trying to design their single player games like MMOs, or sticking their pet ideas into them untested.

As soon as I heard Sawyer start talking about muscle wizards and no wrong builds, I knew it was over.

:whatisfun:

Josh Sawyer tried to implement socialism by making all classes in RPG mechanically equal. Needless to say he failed, socialism can't even exist on paper in fantasy world with magic & dragons. For smart guy, he sure has many dumb opinions. Smug, smart idiot

Josh' balance is a meme, nothing more.
In fact the classes, abilities and items are very unbalanced - as they should be.

“I’m actually glad we didn’t really get the chance to make Baldur’s Gate III, as I think what was planned, The Black Hound, had little to do with the franchise,” says Chris Avellone when we ask him about Black Isle’s proposed third game in the famous RPG series. “While the Baldur’s Gate series kept the player protagonist in the forefront,” the designer continues, “Baldur’s Gate III took a step backward and made the antagonist’s woes more important to the storyline, which I think ends up reducing the player agency. That said, there was some great art and level design ideas in it, I just didn’t care much for the premise or the companion ideas.”

Same old Josh.

When the villain becomes more important than the player, is that a JE Sawyer game standard? Like, the villain narrative?
Just look at Deadfire. Nothing will stop Eothas from doing what he wants to do (they included an option to kill him with one of the DLCs, but he still succeeds at doing what he wants in the process).

It wouldn't be as bad if they weren't simultaneously villain-centric while barely revealing anything about the villain until the last hour of the game.

What is Eothas? Is it the weird statue guy? Never heard his name because I always close and uninstall the game when that cringe comes around XD

At this point I'm very interested in when the TTRPG will come out because it will probably provoke the creation of a larger number of Aumaua portraits to use in my mod.

Come on, Josh. You can't use character names AND art from The Black Hound...
