Many people know of Deckard Cain, the wizened old wise man, who while proclaiming to be interested in defeating the evil that lurked under Tristram, all the while his true interest was charging 100 gold to the brave adventurers risking their lives, for his knowledge and lore.

But Before Deckard Cain was the curse on many an adventurer's lips, he was a young (well... youngish) Lorekeeper in training in a far away land. Join us now as we take a look back at the people and events that helped create the wizend, greedy, pain in the ass we know today.

Stay awhile and listen as we explore his background, next on Age of Decadence!
DOXLwzyh.jpg

Too lazy to be a merchant, too frail to be a warrior, Lorekeeping was an obvious choice for a man who was convinced that the world had not realized how great he was... yet. Lorekeeping allowed him to satisfy both his lust for knowledge, and his desire to lord his knowledge over everyone. Of course he would share those secrets, at a 100 gold a pop.

tqwHRrEh.jpg

Let's take a closer look at young man at he was then.

Attributes:
5 Strength - less than average
8 Dexterity - above average, even considered good.
5 Constitution - less than average.
6 Perception - average.
10 Intelligence - Exceptional.
6 Charisma - average.

Combat Skills:
4 Dagger - Due to the frequent beatings his smart mouth and bad attitude would get him into, Deckard began to carry a knife, and he actually got quite decent at cutting and marking people who crossed him. A Dagger skill of 4 represents the entiriety of Deckard's martial training, the rest being untrained.

Civil Skills:
4 Lore - His early years were filled with studying and reading.
2 Disguise - His early years of cosplaying pan out into a rudimentary understanding of disguise.
2 Etiquette - Tea Parties with his older sister pay off with a beginner's knowledge of which fork and spoon to use for which course of the meal.
2 Persuasion - Begging to be a part of his older sister's tea parties, as well as talking his way out of any real work have shown the promises of being persuasive. Deckard makes a note of this.
2 Streetwise - Having to slip away from so much trouble his big mouth gets him into helps Deckard realize from an early age that not everyone is on his side. Every man for himself.

The Background:

: Your adventure starts in Teron - a small, crumbling town far away from the main tracks of travellers and caravans. It's been dying for the last hundred years or so, kept alive only by the combined efforts of its inhabitants. Broken stonework has been replaced by makeshift wooden construction, creating the impression that new town is slowly emerging from the ruins of the old one.

Much like Teron, the Noble House controlling the town has seen better days. Before the war that toppled the Empire and the devastation that ensued, House Dartan was one of the most powerful houses, but that was then and times have changed. Today, it barely has enough strength to maintain its hold over the local guilds.

As a child, you loved listening to stories about the old days, filled with gods fighting alongside men, power-wielding mage - more demigods than human, and monsters conjured by the cowardly Qantari. So when an opportunity presented itself, you signed up as an apprentice to a local loremaster named Feng.

Loremasters have always been in demand. While the future offers little, the past is rich and ripe for the taking. You just need to know where to dig and what to do with the it, and that's where loremasters came in. To master thei
craft, they dug through the ruins, copied ancient manuscripts, often without understanding them, traded bits and pieces of pre-war knowledge, and appraised anything that looked old. While the magi are long-gone, the machines they built still remain and loremasters are the only ones who have the knowledge to bring them back.

TLDR: Lorekeepers pray on the hopes and dreams of hard working people everywhere. Deckard Cain is no different.

Chapter 1: Another Day on the Job... or is it?

5OTmnWZ.png
: Come here, apprentice.

tqFiPKO.png
: (to himself) I start my day, like every other day, awoken by the barking of my master, Mr. Feng. I quickly dress, survey the room, in case Feng decides to quiz me on my latest research. Oh yeah, I was studying House Dartan.

7n0tsE7h.jpg

*Your lore has increased*
tqFiPKO.png
: (to himself)Awesome!Gonna be a good day.

5OTmnWZ.png
: Come here, apprentice.

tqFiPKO.png
: (to himself) sigh. I better check my inventory quickly before the old man comes in here.

tqFiPKO.png
: (to himself) Ok, my bronze dagger, good ol' Mr. Stabby. Some metal bars... what were these for? And these yellow and white plant thingys... I have no idea. This wavy dagger...yeah, not my style, but maybe I can get something for it if I can sneak away from the old man... and some walking around money. Can always use more of this.

tu3HVZB.png
: Feng came to Teron with a caravan two decades ago.Nobody knew where he came from of why, but he had the bitterness of a man soured by the memory of the life he lost. He was well versed in languages and the antiquities, but the town already had a loremaster. Fortunately for Feng, the loremaster fell sick and passed away, despite the best efforts of the localalchemist who was quite puzzled by the symptoms. Feng became the new loremaster and even earned the favor of Lord Antidas after discovering several Daratan relics.

5OTmnWZ.png
: Did you finish translating that scroll? Nevermind, I have abetter job for you. Someone at the inn has a trinket they want me to look at.Why don't you handle it? Just remember what I taught you: take a good look, show some excitement, then tell them that it's a very valuable artefact that's worth a lot to the right collector, and that they were right to bring it to us to learn its true value. Wait for the words to sink in and then ask for 100imperials to research it further.

tqFiPKO.png
: A trinket?.

5OTmnWZ.png
: I think the word "map" was mentioned. Go and take a look. If it's something good, bring it to me.

tqFiPKO.png
: What if it actually is a valuable artefact?

5OTmnWZ.png
: Artefacts? I've been stuck in this shithole you call a town for the last twenty years. Year after year, farmers and diggers bring me everything they find, hoping for a lucky break. They bring me bracelets, cheap pottery, rusty old locks, pipes, chamber pots, even deformed skulls.

The sad truth is that this town doesn't have anything of valye, which is probably the only reason Antidas is still in charge.

tqFiPKO.png
: Why did you staythen?

5OTmnWZ.png
: Weren't you listening? Every year peasants bring me junk to appraise. Good business.

tqFiPKO.png
: I will go there rightaway, Master.

LyhgLT7.jpg

tu3HVZB.png
: The inn is full of guest. After spending weeks and sometimes months on the road, they have an unhealthy appetite for cheap wine, stove cooked meals, and women willing to share their beds for a few coins. You navigate the crowd and go upstairs. The trader's room is easy to find.

Lcz57BS.jpg
: Are you the loremaster I sent for?

tqFiPKO.png
: I'm Deckard Cain,Master Feng's apprentice. Should my master's attention be required, I'll send for him. Where is the artefact?

Lcz57BS.jpg
: Right here.

tu3HVZB.png
: You open the scroll carefully and study it for a few minutes. It looks like an ordinary map depicting a temple. There is an old seal at the bottom. The name of the seal is Thor-Agoth.

tqFiPKO.png
: It's a very valuable artefact that's worth a lot to the right collector. You were wise to bring it to us to learn its true value.

Lcz57BS.jpg
: And what might its true value be?

tu3HVZB.png
: Gracius tries to sound indifferent, but it's obvious that Feng's simple formula worked its magic.

tqFiPKO.png
: Are you going to keep doing that?! He's standing RIGHT THERE.

tu3HVZB.png
: Deckard Cain grows angry and excited at the wonderful dolcet tones of the Narrator.

Lcz57BS.jpg
: What simple formula? What's going on?!

tqFiPKO.png
: Uh... nothing. *ahem* For someone who's interested in the High Lord's artefacts, it could be worth
thousands. I'll have to study the map further, of course, to determine its history and value.

Lcz57BS.jpg
: Please forgive this uneducated trader, master Deckard cain, but who are the High lords? I will
be presenting this map to Lord Antidas tomorrow, and I'd like to impress His Lordship with some bits of knowledge.

tqFiPKO.png
: According to the legends, the High Lords were our allies in the ware between our glorious Empire
and the ruthless Qantari. While their nature is debatable, more loremasters agree that it was definitely supernatural. This map bears the seal of Thor-Agoth or Toragoth, as he was also known.

Lcz57BS.jpg
: And what is the significance of this seal?

tqFiPKO.png
: [lore success][persuasion] Thor-Agoth's title was the Artificer. He built many machines, but most were destroyed during the war or lost after. There are many people who hope that some caches have survived and can be recovered. They collect and study Thor-Agoth's documents, looking for clues. That's why we want to be absolutely certain that the seal that makes the map so valuable isn't a fake. It might be very embarrassing for you other wise. Unless, of course, if you insist that....

tu3HVZB.png
: Gracius gives you a small purse without any enthusiasm. You're about to leave when you notice Gracius' hesitation.

Lcz57BS.jpg
: There is somethingelse I'd like you to look at. You seem very knowledgable. I found it where Ifound the map.

*You got 100 imperials and a sphere from Gracius*

tqFiPKO.png
: I don't know that it is. I'm not even sure it's an artefact. I'll show it to master Feng and let you know what he thinks.

tu3HVZB.png
: You are about to leave, when the innkeeper stops you .

OP1G8yb.png
:Another, um,guest is in need of your services, master. He's a prospector. Would you be kind enough to take a look?

tqFiPKO.png
: Sure .

tu3HVZB.png
: The innkeeper sends one of the slaves to get the prospector. It'sa man with a sun-darkened skin, unkempt hair and a heavy beard. His faded, worn out clothes are still coverd with road dust. He opens his bag, takes out a dozen of carefully wrapped items of various sizes, and slowly removes the dirty rags protecting them.

You browse through his treasures, gears, pottery, half-burned scrolls withfaded no longer decipherable letters, glass jars with strange liquids.

dyzniwL.png
: Anything you want to buy? I'm embarrassed to admit, but I find myself without sufficient funds to pay for a comfortable stay, although I'm sure that some of these artefacts are bound to fetch a high price. I mean, just look at this beauty. The very definition of a mysterious device. From a wonderous artefact, no doubt! What do you think, loremaster?

tqFiPKO.png
: [lore] It's called a worm and it's missing a gear that goes with it. It was a common device.

tu3HVZB.png
: The prospector sighs and unwraps yet another "artefact",revealing a charred skull.

dyzniwL.png
: The skull of a Magi! The Power still burns through him, much like it did when he was alive, walking the earth and battling demons. When nights are dark, it glows softly, keeping the demons at bay.

tqFiPKO.png
: [lore] It does have the magic, but it's dangerous and will kill you if you keep it. Stay away from anything that glows in the dark.

dyzniwL.png
: Why?

tqFiPKO.png
: The old magic is like fire. Fire can keep you warm, cook your food, and help you forge weapons and tools, but it can also burn down your house or a forest, the moment you lose control, which we don't have to begin with. Not anymore.

dyzniwL.png
: I have a special charm that keeps me safe.

tu3HVZB.png
: The prospector shows you a strange amulet, his face lit with eagerness and greed. You turn it over in your hands thoughtfully. Adorned with beads and engraved with runes, it appears to be a ceremonial bowl of some sort.Strangely warped, but that isn't unusual for artefacts of the Old Empire - who knows what arcane forces had been unleashed on it? Two small, metal drums are affixed to the underside, too awkwardly angled to be supports for the bowl. You rap one with a knuckle and listen. Hollow. Resivoirs, perhaps, containers of sacred liquid for the bowl? You are unsure, but you keep your expression carefully neutral, it wouldn't do for the punters to see your uncertainty.Unprofessional.

tqFiPKO.png
: [streetwise] Junk.Worthless junk.

dyzniwL.png
: [success] Are you sure? Do you know what it is?

tqFiPKO.png
: [streetwise] It's a ceremonial bowl for burning incense.

OOC: I lost some screenshots here, sigh. The gist of the rest of the conversation is that I failed the second streetwise check, he demanded 500 gold for the amulet. I told him that no one in this town could afford that and he was nuts. The innkeeper then got mad at the prospector because he had no money to pay for his room. The innkeeper warned the prospector that he better come up with some money soon or he will get kicked out of the inn.

Now back to our story, where our young loremaster has just returned home to tell his master how everything went.

5OTmnWZ.png
: How did it go?

tqFiPKO.png
: It went well. I got a map, a sphere, and 100 imperials.

5OTmnWZ.png
: A map and a sphere! Oh, what a glorious day. The seal looks real.I'll take a better look tonight and let you know in the morning. As for the sphere, it's just a bead from some necklace.

*You receive the sphere and 50 imperials*
*You gain a new insight, which can be used to increase your skills*

tqFiPKO.png
: Thank you, master.

tu3HVZB.png
: You rest for the night.

tqFiPKO.png
: REALLY?! Sigh.

Let's Play Age of Decadence, aka Deckard Cain, the Wonder Years.

Chapter 2: Master Feng might be a dick...

When we last left our hero, he was just settling down to rest for the evening after a busy day of scamming a map and a sphere from Gracius. For his hard work taking advantage of people's hopes and dreams, he profited 50 gold and a strange sphere that is probably completely useless and will have no bearing whatsoever in the days to come. No bearing at all.

Waking up the next day, he discussed the significance of the map with his master...

NTS6Npf.jpg

5OTmnWZ.png
: The map is ordinary. No "X marks the spot" there. The seal is interesting and well preserved, but its worth no more than a hundred imperials.Maybe Antidas will buy it. Go see him when you have a chance.

*You receive the map*

tqFiPKO.png
: Buy it? What about the trader, Gracius?

5OTmnWZ.png
: Almost forgot. He's dead, so you can keep the map. Apparently, he wasn't welcome in this town, and with the assassins' guild almost out of work... I'm surprised he it as far as the inn.

tqFiPKO.png
: Is there anything else you want me to do, master?

5OTmnWZ.png
: As a matter of fact... You see, Deckard Cain, being a loremaster isn't just about dealing with rarities. Knowing how to deal with people is equally important. I believe I've negelcted this part of your education, but fortunately it should be easy to fix.
Lord Antidas has invited another loremaster to Teron. Needless to say, I don't share his opinion that two heads are better than one, and I'll be verygrateful if you can find a way to get rid of the new loremaster. You'll secure your future and learn a valuable lesson at the same time.
His name is Cassius. He's probably at the inn already, so don't waste anytime.

tqFiPKO.png
: Are you asking me to kill him?

*I lost some more screenshots, but the gist of it is that, yes, Feng is asking me to kill some innocent loremaster so that he can continue to monopolize the flow of information and lore in Teron. *

Sure, Deckard Cain has cut some people from time to time, who hasn't? Actually killing someone? I'm not sure he has the stomach for this.

tqFiPKO.png
: (to himself) Well,I'll head to the inn. I'm not sure I have the stomach for this...

ZfVSWeq.jpg

tqFiPKO.png
: (to himself) Deep breath. Deep Breath. Let's go inside and see if we can even spot this Cassius fellow.

cjrvGyd.jpg

tqFiPKO.png
: (to himself) I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that this guy who is dressed EXACTLY like me is the other loremaster...

*ARGH! I think my F12 key is breaking or something. I'm missing several screenshots I THOUGHT I took. Anyway, turns out the guy wearing an outfit exactly like mine IS the other loremaster. I tell him that I am there to escort him to Antidas, when in reality I take him to an abandoned house, where I can stab is relative seclusion.*

Cain, still unsure if he can go through with commiting murder, sort of fingers his blade a bit, contemplating his next step...*
vIhiYvH.jpg

tu3HVZB.png
: It takes Cassius almost a minute, but he finally understands.

lei7Nib.png
: Wait! We can come to an arrangement... I'm a loremaster.

tqFiPKO.png
: So is Feng.

lei7Nib.png
: Feng? HAHAHAHAHA. Feng is a charlatan. He can entertain children with his tales, whereas I can offer you something that's worth a lot more than anything Feng promised you.

*I actually agree that Feng is a charlatan, but I'm starting to think ALL loremasters are charlatans.

tqFiPKO.png
: I'm listening.

lei7Nib.png
: I can open the secrets of metal transmutation to you. I've studied the most sacred manuscripts, struggling to understand the wisdom contained in them. What I've learned is nothing but a grain of sand in the desert, but this grain is a hundred times more than what we know today.

tqFiPKO.png
: A man will promise anything to postpone his own death. Prove it.

lei7Nib.png
: Very well. All weapon metals are what's called aleiers - several substances forged together in such a manner that they become a new substance. Bronze, for example, is an aleier of copper and tin. Iron is aleier of iron ore and charcoal. Steel isiron with impurities, you must add limestone or glass. They will float to the surface and attract impurities. Blue steel is an aleier of steel and kobold ore, which is what gives it the blue hue. And finally, the meteor metal isaleier of iron and several rare metals. The trick as I understand it, is not the rarity of the metals though, but the extreme cold of the void and the heatof the fall.

* Deckard Cain, wasn't listening though, he was using the time to steel his reserve. He takes an opportunity to attempt a critical strike while Cassius is talking, but either his lack of skill, or his shaking hands prevent a critical strike from hitting a vital organ. Cassius, realizing that he isn't going to talk his way of this, pull his own knife and they two loremasters begin their dance off.*

Fnx4emg.jpg

*I kept trying to get screenshots of the actual animations and blood, but I was not successful. Cassius is an even worse fighter than Deckard, and he soon falls to several stabs to various soft parts of his body. Deckard is very slightly wounded, but nothing serious.

wVlU3hw.jpg

Deckard takes a moment to let the reality of what he has done sink in.

Then he loots the body.
epbsG1z.jpg

Pocketing the coins, and an iron dagger, Deckard then decides that he will take the dead mans clothes. Grey is a much suitable color and it matches his prematurely grey hair nicely.

Deckard, feeling older than he was when he entered this abandoned house, leaves Cassius' naked body and returns to his master to report that the foul deed is accomplished.
sjOoLJa.jpg

5OTmnWZ.png
: What is it, apprentice?

tqFiPKO.png
: Cassius is no longer a problem.

5OTmnWZ.png
: So, young Cassuis is gone and will bother us no more. Good riddance, I say. Such a pompous ass that boy was. Well, I owe you a lot more than I what I paid you - you must forgive an old man his habits - and I'd like you to have this.

tu3HVZB.png
: Feng carefully unwraps a small bundle and gives you a ring. It's a heavy golden ring covered with softly glowing runes. While the gold feels cold to touch, the glowing runes burn your fingertips.

5OTmnWZ.png
: It is the famous magic ring of general Galbo. The ring was crafted by the Council of Magi to grant the general special powers, which make him unstoppable in battle. After the general's death, the ring was thought to be lost and hasn't been seen for centuries. It is, without a doubt, one of the most important relics of the Empire, and its reappearance is a great omen!

tqFiPKO.png
: What powers does the ring have?

*stupid screenshot capture. I lost the screenshot of a sick burn that Feng drops on Deckard Cain where he says that ring has the power to make Deckard Cain stupid, because the ring is OF COURSE a fake.*

5OTmnWZ.png
: I made this ring a few days ago. I copied the runes from an old manuscript and filled them with an alchemical component. It glows in poorly lit areas and will burn your fingers to the bone if you aren't careful. When you
finally meet Lord Antidas - I suppose I could take you to meet him, but it would be too suspicious - you'll offer the ring as a tribute without asking for anything in return. I'll confirm that the ring is authentic and will recommend his Lordship reward your dedication to Houise Daratan. Then I'll start a lengthy and expensive research aimed at unlocking the ring's powers, but that's
a different story. Do you get it now?

tqFiPKO.png
: Count me in.

bbEmyhL.jpg

We've gained enough experience to upgrade some skills. Deckard Cain decides to raise his etiquette and persuasion skills.

His current body count is at 1. Will there be more?

Interesting choice of skills for a loremaster. I might have to try that sometime. When I'm thoroughly saturated with hammering the life out of people.

Awesome start. Though does everyone roll Loremaster? That was my first choice and it seems everyone's too.
It's because people are so used to RPGs making persuasion the optimal way to accomplish things instead of one of many that they assume Age of Decadence is the same.

In my case I just wanted to learn more about the setting so the 'Loremaster' seemed a good pick.

I also roll Loremaster because I pretty much always roll the mage/sage if I can. And Loremasters are basically fantasy techpriests :)

If you are gonna go talky, wouldn't you go with Grifter instead?
