I'm going to start my own LP and it's going to be about...

[Intelligence] Alien Assault is not a RPG

Alien Assault is a remake of the old Space Hulk for PC. However, Games Workshop doesn't like things with their Space Marines in it if they don't get a shitload of money in exchange, so instead of the Ultramarines you play with the Alien Assault Force, whose soldiers don't wear Terminator armors but S.P.A.R.T.A.N's ones instead (wasn't that from another game?)

For those of you who didn't played Space Hulk, in it you had to put your men in tiny corridors and watch them die. Oh, sure, you could also survive but that only happens a 5% of the time.

There's also a thread about it here, in the Codex!

So, we start the game and it asks us to choose a team.

1-1.png

Alien Assault Force is the only option. Alien Assault Force sounds kinda generic and lame, so we choose the CoG's instead!

1-2.png

[Perception] This image has been edited with paint.

Let's meet our team!

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
[1] Marcus Fenix is noted for having a famed military career, despite this, Fenix is left for dead in a dilapidated penitentiary, until Dominic "Dom" Santiago, his friend and former comrade, saves him. He is later promoted to sergeant and becomes the squad leader of Alpha Squadron.

100px-Dom-mug.JPG
[2] Dom has a close friendship with Marcus, his longtime comrade. Like Marcus, he is a seasoned veteran with a strong sense for family, and often thinks of his wife Maria.

100px-Cole-mug.JPG
[3] Augustus "Cole Train" Cole is a COG soldier that serves under Marcus Fenix. He is often recognized for his previous career as a "Blood Bowl" blitzer. Cole possesses a vibrant and often outspoken character, and is extremely enthusiastic in combat.

100px-Baird-mug.JPG
[4] Damon Baird is a cynical and reluctant soldier, whose main strengths lie in his intelligence. During the events of Gears of War, he appears as a sarcastic soldier, that takes and makes jokes.

100px-Kim-mug.JPG
[5] Minh Kim is a strictly by-the-book soldier, who closely follows the COG's rules and code of conduct. He also loves anime and furries.

Anyway, let's get into action! We first choose the campaign, because I've already beaten the tutorial missions.

1-3.png

FACT: The tutorial is harder than the campaign itself.

Mission 1: Opening Movements

2-1.png

This is our briefing map. Our trops enter at the red position and we must secure a spot at the north, also we have fog of war at the map because the scanner has failed and we can't see enemy moves.

2-2.png

Our troops start in a straight line at that little corridor. Just staying in a line means slowly dying in a line so we move and make a wall of steel.

2-3.png

No aliens yet, we keep walking.

2-4.png

We spot some corridors at both sides. We don't want the aliens to come from them and surround us so we'll just leave some soldiers watching them.

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
I think I'll stay here and... well... ehrm, watch the corridors, yeah, that's it. You just go and get deeper in the ship.

2-5.png

100px-Dom-mug.JPG
There are more corridors here, boss!

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Allright, watch them. You Kim and Baird, go ahead and secure the spot they told us.

2-6.png

Haha! Finally an alien appears and kills our useless soldier, you can see at the image the moment of the bloody explosion death (This game is also gritty and mature, just like Dragon Age)

100px-Kim-mug.JPG
Nooooo! Dom!

100px-Dom-mug.JPG
Hurr... Durr...

2-7.png

As he won't be able to fancy Dom again, Kim enters rage mode and kicks the aliens butt. Then he goes emo and stares at the dark corridor.

Meanwhile our trusty soldier Baird goes up the corridor.

2-8.png

Our soldiers keeps going up the corridor with nothing remarkable happening. He has spotted a hole in the ground so he watches it carefully (aliens can come from tunnels which you can't see and they're always a nasty surprise).

2-9.png

An alien tries to attack our mighty sergeant, but he uses his chainsaw to tear him apart. Also, Baird has reached the spot and "secures" it (aka, staying at it one turn).

2-10.png

Victory!

2-11.png

The Alpha Squadron returns home for a hot meal and some gritty and mature sex while our soldier Kim gets promoted for all that alien butt-kicking.

Here we are again, in a glorious chapter in the life of our mighty soldiers, cleaning abandoned space ships of the alien infestation.

Mission 2: Shadow Game

1-4.png

Here is the map, again we don't have any real info because the scanners were jammed. Fuck, time to buy some new equipment.

1-5.png

Here is our mighty sergeant! He's our only soldier in this mission, and he has to reach a point to the north. Quite original.

1-6.png

The sergeant walks a bit and stays in overwatch mode, we don't want any alien to surprise us without giving him a one way ticket to hell.

1-7.png

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Hello? Is anyone out there?

1-8.png

Finally some action! Our mighty sergeant has no problem dealing with those weak aliens.

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Fuck yeah!

1-9.png

There could be more aliens so we watch a turn with the gun in our hands (Haha! Oh...)

[Perception] I just noticed I didn't close that door just behind my soldier. Fuck, that usually means a insta-death.

1-10.png

An alien bitch tries to eat us, so we just give some of the CHAINSAW MEDICINE!

1-12.png

And here we are, the ending of our mission. Yeah, 3 turns just dissapeared, but that's because... well... the record devices were jammed! Anyway, nothing interesting happened there, just some random walking.

1-13.png

And that's how our mighty sergeant become promoted to Specialist by completing the hard mission of going to a certain point.

Mission 3: The Sample

3-1.png

Here it is, our very first FedEx mission.

3-2.png

We start the mission with just our sergeant in the team. Oh well, let's hope he survives!

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
You told me it was going to be easy!

commanderi.png
Sure, sure, don't worry.

3-3.png

Aha! This small blue thing is what we must deliver, let's grab it.

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Small? Are you kidding me? It's almost bigger than me!

commanderi.png
Stop whining bitch!

3-4.png

With the blue whateverthatthingis we start our way to the deliver point. We stay in overwatch mode to avoid being surprised by aliens.

3-5.png

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Ahhw, I'm bored.

3-6.png

See the radar? It says there's an alien just behind the door, we stay vigilant for it.

3-7.png

As we get close to the door we notice the enemy was just a malfunction from the radar. However the other brighter red dots are real aliens.

3-8.png

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
I can hear them chasing me!!

3-9.png

Time to do some collar grabbing! We guard the door with our lives!

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Our?

3-10.png

This alien tried to kill us but didn't succeed.

3-11.png

We step back and take revenge!

3-12.png

Aha! We just have to wait one more turn.

3-13.png

Victory!

3-13.png

And thanks to this epic FedEx mission, our magnificent sergeant gets promoted to specialist.

Somehow we get the same overused fantasy worlds D&D-like over & over again, and the WH40k franchise, which is more interesting and has much more posibilities (even thought it's the same fantasy but in space) has almost no games, and i'm not even saying good games.

Insert clever insult here
The Panzer General copycat WH40K was horrible as was the X-Com copycat. Original Space Hulk was pretty awesome. After that? Pretty much Dawn of War 1 & 2.

So yeah, there's room for quite few more games. Dunno if Games Workshop demands huge royalties or are otherwise just assholes to gamedevs.

Dawn of War would be HEAVAN for me if only it was turn-based.

I fail at real time.

Also, nice LP, keep it coming!

Really? I remember enjoying Chaos Gate, though there's been a lot since I last played it and looks like it's unplayable in newer versions of Windows so I may be wrong and it wasn't as good as I thought.

Mission 4: Man Down

57538713.png

Here is our briefing map, again, if you take a look closely you'll notice that it's the same map of the latter mission but expanded. I also think it's the same map from the first 2 missions. Anyway, we must 'seal' some areas, that means closing the gates.

68010696.png

This is our sergeant. Where are his teammates, do you say? At the other side of the map, this is the same room where we delivered the item in the last mission and looks like we're just after that. The door of this room is one of the ones we must close, so let's do it.

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Can I close it from the inside?

commanderi.png
No.

69067882.png

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Work done! Let's go home

commanderi.png
It won't be that easy.

92728794.png

The rest of the team, starting at our loved corridor. We, of course, make the steel wall tactic.

99609162.png

Here our sergeant gets ready to face the alien that's aproaching him, coming from one of the doors he must close (the yellow dot at the radar).

16499452.png

Meanwhile our team has divided in pairs, Kim is going with Cole, and Baird with Dom (cloned, of course).

44959899.png

The radar just showed an anomaly, there was no alien so we just go ahead and close the required door.

67883550.png

We keep driving our men through the corridors, there's some movement on the radar but it's still far away.

84464348.png

100px-Kim-mug.JPG
There's trouble ahead, I shall purge the alien scum with my holy bolter.

100px-Cole-mug.JPG
What? Did you say something?

100px-Kim-mug.JPG
Watch my back, the enemies are everywhere.

11783479.png

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Am I the only one not finding any alien?

18560228.png

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Whoops!

45138207.png

It takes the sergeant two shots to take the alien down, but he acomplishes it.

58194585.png

The rest of the team has kept advancing, having a hard time and shooting an alien every two steps, but now they're closer to their objective and about to regroup.

61362122.png

100px-Baird-mug.JPG
Door closed!

100px-Dom-mug.JPG
Congratulations, you should be proud of yourself.

100px-Baird-mug.JPG
Thanks!

100px-Dom-mug.JPG
*Sigh*

12070018.png

An alien has tried to attack our sarge, but he beats him with his chainsaw.

58022076.png

With the team regrouped, looks like the aliens are attacking again. We kill one of them and get ready to face the next.

80563234.png

Allright, here we are, we're all together and there's only two doors left, a piece of cake.

18243415.png

More aliens, no problem for the chainsaw, really.

84448270.png

As only one soldier can get trough the corridor at a time, there's no sense in just staring there looking, but they're doing it anyway.

102j.png

Another alien! Should we shoot it? Nah, let's just close the door, I wouldn't trust in my soldiers skill too much.

105a.png

Lesson learnt, they set a defensive perimeter, useless because the aliens now can just come from the corridor Baird is walking but cool anyway.

107s.png

100px-Baird-mug.JPG
Door closed!

108v.png

Victory!

109.png

And so, three of our soldiers get a new rank. Our sergeant for all that chainsaw action, Baird for all that door closing action and Kim for all that corridor walking action.

Mission 5: Extraction

5-1.png

Time for more delivery missions. This time, however, things are getting harder! We're also having command over two squads, so we have more cannon fodder to spend at the battle.

5-2.png

This is the start location for Alpha Squad. Sergeant Marcus Fenix is over the artifact we must deliver, so he's the designated carrier.

5-3.png

And this is the start location for Beta Squad. Right behind them is the spot where we must deploy the artifact, so they just have to hold the position and cover the Alpha Squad.

5-5.png

This is how we're positioning our soldiers. Two holding the front and two watching their backs. Also, one of the members is going to support the Alpha Squad.

5-7.png

Here we can see our Alpha Squad while performing the Train Maneuver, the preferred by it's members!

100px-Kim-mug.JPG
Ah, I wish Cole was the one behind me...

5-11.png

Meanwhile our soldier is trying to reach the Alpha Squad to support them, the first alien of this mission appears...

5-13.png

He didn't got too far! And our Generic Soldier #7 is in position. The corridor in front of him is directly connected to the room where Alpha Squad is right now, so we need him to watch closely that tunnel we can spot at the left 3 squares in front of him. That kind of tunnels is just accesible for aliens and they could easily ambush us if we're not careful.

5-15.png

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
All right! This is the plan, Cole and Baird are staying here watching our backs.

100px-Cole-mug.JPG
I love watching your backs.

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Kim is going first through the corridor, then is going Dom and I will be the latest. Any questions?

100px-Baird-mug.JPG
Do I have to close any door?

100px-Dom-mug.JPG
Why must I be the second?

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
All right! Let's keep going!

5-21.png

Our Squad reaches a critical point, in front of them it's that damned tunnel. They must run to the other side and quickly get out of the way so our Beta Squad Support Soldier #7 can keep watching the way. Because of that we must get across 1 by 1, as we don't have enough CP to perform everything with more than one soldier.

5-22.png

100px-Kim-mug.JPG
I'm at the other side!

100px-Dom-mug.JPG
Oh, shit, he's dead!

100px-Kim-mug.JPG
Not that other side...

5-26.png

Looks like it was a good idea leaving these two soldiers to stand the ground here. Soon the aliens appear but we are ready to face them.

5-28.png

Our Beta Squad gets also attacked but we take down the aliens before they can't even get close to us.

5-30.png

Things are getting hotter up there!

5-32.png

Luckily they're soon smashed to bones and blood by our powerful bolters.

5-35.png

If you're wondering why has Dom suddenly dissapeared, he's, in fact, been killed. He stopped by the tunnel and one alien ate him. Ah, the nature of things, some hunt and some are hunted...

5-36.png

This is the alien that ate Dom. We kill it. The End.

5-40.png

Marcus is finally with the Beta Squad! Soon we'll have delivered the artifact and we could return to the base.

5-42.png

However, Generic Soldier #10's dreams are soon destroyed by the same alien that killed him.

5-44.png

And here we can see the massive slaughter that left the retreat of Alpha Squad.

5-45.png

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Kim! Look out! Your back!

100px-Kim-mug.JPG
Whataaarrrrrghhhghh!?!

100px-Fenix-mug.JPG
Nooooooooooooo!

5-46.png

VENGEANCE!!

5-51.png

And finally, Marcus reaches our final destination, but this is not the end yet...

5-53.png

Here we see the last moments of Beta Squad Support Soldier #7 before being sliced to pieces by the alien claws. We'll never forget you!

5-55.png

Victory at sea!

5-56.png

And here are the awards of this mission. The awarded soldiers are Baird and Cole, for holding the ground while everyone else was running and #8 for sucessfully defending the arrival destination.

I'm happy to see this LP continued. Is the next mission the on where you start south and have to burn down the square room on west? That one is brutal, I'd been repeating it countless times before I succeeded.

Yes, it's the next mission. Hopefully it will take less time to the next update, I had to format my computer like 3 times and the game keep crashing when using the built-in "screenshoter",
what made a pain trying to accomplish the mission. Now I'm using Fraps and everything is set here.

Random question: For enemies there's only Genestealers, or do exist several types of the xenos that attack you?

You only face Genestealers, but they're enough. Mind that one hit alone of those bitches can kill any of your marines, and their numbers overwhelm yours. One of the most difficult missions in the Tutorial was just killing 20 aliens.

Mission 6: Pandora

6-1.png

Here's the briefing map. We're at the same map of the last 5 missions so we should already know it quite well. This time things get more interesting though, we must burn one of the halls west of the ship, and for this job we have the support of our magnificent flamers.

6-2.png

We have to divide our team to achieve victory. It's utterly stupid having 4 soldiers in the same corridor and just one of them shooting, they're just gonna die one by one. Anyway, we're sending one man with a bolter and one with a flamer to the upper corridor and the same for the lower, we're also leaving one man with a flamer as a bait.

6-3.png

Here we can see the distribution we're using, one of our teams faces one alien but the bolter quickly takes care of it.

6-4.png

One more alien, no trouble for us.

6-5.png

Allright, many things happened here. First, our bait blocked the way using the flamer. The flamer doesn't works like a... well, a flamer, instead it's more like a incendiary grenade, we can shoot it anywhere in a place we have visual of it and it burns a 3x3 square, killing the marines and aliens (thought not always) and, most important, blocking the way for one turn.

Up there, the Bolter Marine from the lower team went to help the upper team but he miserably failed all the shots and instead of providing help he is going to need help now.

6-6.png

Luckily, the other bolter marine was in overwatch mode and killed the alien before he could hurt our soldier. We keep moving, every team it's own way.

6-7.png

We face some more aliens, but the corridor is lengthy enough so our soldiers can kill them with little trouble. Also, our living bait keeps killing aliens with his flamer.

6-8.png

Our living bait works, as one alien tries to eat him, but instead he just burns in hell.

6-9.png

We are constantly killing aliens so we keep going really slow to our destination.

6-10.png

The aliens are now ignoring our bait and instead they're trying to surround our burning teams. We can't let this happen so we block the way with more fire.

6-11.png

As we can see here, one alien could escape to the flames of our bait marine, but as we have another flamer marine in the team he just turns back and makes the alien burn. Also, sergeant with jammed bolter and alien in his face.

6-12.png

The same as before, bait working, flamer also working, alien not working anymore.

6-13.png

Here is our sergeant bloody-explosioning. Next time take more care of your weapons.

6-14.png

The left team must spend his turn killing with fire the alien, so we also block our way to the destination. But the right team has free way so he just goes straight there and burns the room, at the cost of leaving themselves unnarmed against the aliens.

6-15.png

And they kill our flamer soldier...

6-16.png

...and our bolter soldier.

6-17.png

But still, we've successfully burnt the room and we are victorious!

6-18.png

And from the two survivors, the one rewarded is, guess it, the bait soldier!
