Congrats! It's a hell of a lot tougher challenge than it says. Is this the first challenge finished? Sharpshooter?

6 hours huh? You must've lined up every shot 3 times before pulling the trigger.

It's the first time I finished the game, period. Seems sharpshooter made everything easier for me, as I only had to focus on pistols, and being able to squeeze an alarming number of shots off in no time is really powerful.
Plus, I cheated a bit and looked online for what kind of pistols that could be assembled, and had a storm pistol and energy pistol to switch in between. I managed not to find any unique pistols, so I guess I had good luck getting the proper mods for those assembled babies.

And those 6 hours were partly due to me having to leave the keyboard from time to time to tend to my family, so there was a lot of idling.
    Still, I'm quite pleased. :smug:

update 17: Deimos lvl 4, wrong way to do an ambush

    Show Spoiler
    music

Hard to believe we're on update 17 already. On the other hand, with this former commando greeting us, it's not hard at all to believe we're been on 17 floors.

With the commando and barrels so close, this could be insta-death if we do things wrong. I will chop him up before he even notices I'm here, hopefully.

One shot, one kill. Yeah. The commando makes a wonderfully familiar sound when he dies, not sure from where in Doom but it's great.

If you're looking for tips on how to kill commandos , sorry you're shit out of luck. We will learn soon enough how much I really know about commandos when one of them manages to kill me.

They all make use of plasma rifles, and in the back of my mind I'm quite happy I get one so early. It gives us options.

The beginning room also gives us our fireproof armor, great! Now all we need are 3 more level ups :/

As always I'm being mindful of getting ambushed but no one comes out despite the fact I hear a lot of unsettling noises.

Easy monsters, that's more my style.

Just for fun why don't I use the Arena Master's staff.

NO LEVEL UP SCREEN FOR YOU. We take hellrunner for the second time.

Er... what is it with demons that they must come in packs of 5 or more?

All we're missing now is a hell knight to complete the ambush.

    Oh, hello.

Going for melee again, hope this works out.

He hits us but dies quite nicely after 3 hits. An exotic armor? nice.

Meh, it's too damaged and it sucks. I discard it. (unfortunately it was done just before Occasionally Fatal's last video LP!)

The rest of this level is empty again. Dat Doom RL AI.

One last enemy shows himself, let's give the burst chaingun a chance.

Two hits to bring this human down, what a piece of shit. I lose a bunch more health. It kinda defeats the purpose to have an awesome chaingun if you can't use it to get out of sticky long range situations.

Woot, a large medpack. With it, the second part of the level starts, the inventory puzzle.

And what a puzzle it was, I'm forced to leave things behind temporarily just to pick up other things.

Sure, that wouldn't be a problem if I carried less than 10 large medpacks, but I refuse to compromise.

No level anymore seems to be empty of loot. We find a shockwave pack that's rare enough to get me excited, but the inventory situation is hopeless.

Before leaving, let's have a look at the plasma rifle. Wow, I'm amazed the damage is so close to my super duper upgraded burst chaingun. But I won't swap them out, the chaingun has double the ammo and its easier to find to boot.

Wait a minute, the plasma rifle has +2 to accuracy while the chaingun has +0. I never knew the base chaingun was so bad. What probably held us back so far was our crappy accuracy and with the armor piercing effect... That's it, I'm going for the plasma rifle. What's the point of a rapid fire if it can't rapidly kill? It's worth a gamble.

And that allows us to make room for a rare friend of ours.

Goodbye burst chaingun, we hardly knew you. :salute:

    Final Grade: B
Another quick level that's typical of Deimos so far by quite a bit of damage to us.

Dude, you're killing the suspense! Also, what was the deal with the energy shielded vest? It's supposed to have +50 resists, but yours has 12... does it degrade with durability? Also, turns out that inventory puzzles are a lot less embarrassing when you can skip screenshots and don't have to figure out what to do and try talking about it.

Yep, resistances degrade with durability just like the flat armor values. That armor would have actually been pretty godlike in conjunction with malicious blades. Over 50% resistance to everything... and I think you can still mod that thing too.

Just a way of speaking. :obviously: I know nothing of the future, the whole thing is live plus 5 minutes.

Yeah, I thought since it had 12 it would only increase to 25 with full armor value. Furthermore, I thought that since its description said it was very fragile that it would be one of those armors that couldn't be repaired.

update 18: Deimos lvl 5, a story of our run

    Show Spoiler
    music

We begin our new level with some easy foes. Surely by now we know how to dispose of them.

The Butcher's Cleaver of course, it's really amazing versus spawn campers thanks to its speed.

But what's next? the level is quite open.

I hear a pain elemental this way, better avoid going right.

So we follow our instincts to go left and get rewarded with a computer map. We haven't seen one in a while.

Using our amazing analytical ability, we notice 2 hell barons. One to the left and one to the right. Everything we do must be to avoid getting owned by them.

Or to own them to be more precise. This guy is about to get a nasty surprise.

I actually hit him from this angle. You gotta love the shotgun spread.

He never had a chance. You could say he was thrown against, the wall. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Now for the second hell baron. Boy would it be good if he made his way to those lava barrels.

He doesn't unfortunately. This shotgun range is a bit much even for me so let's switch to the plasma and see how it does in action. There's a ton of plasma cells near so it's no worry.

He's not dead but it's doing damage.

So a whole plasma clip for half a hell baron's hp. Though it was all at extreme range in the dark, I don't know what to say. Not bad.

15 shotgun shells later he's dead.

Our final enemy is the pain elemental. Not that he's hard, but he is annoying. He manages to dodge that lava barrel for example!

Here we learn that even if I am out of sight completely he can still spawn tons of skulls. Fuck.

Are we going to get hurt? That would really suck at this point after having killed the two hell barons so well.

Old school tactics are required, and they work, sort of.

    Their screams are deafening. :smug:

A lot of shotgun ammo has been expended here, a lot. But there's still 1-2 shotgun grunts to loot at this point. it's only in hindsight when I'm writing this that I realize we may need more than 1 inventory slot for the ammo.

The last part are a bunch of weaklings, should be fun! I'm going to use the plasma rifle since there's ammo to spare.

This should be so very easy, 1 blast and they all pop. Except when you're shooting in the dark, it's two shots a pop as they all miss.

And then you have ammo problems and are assaulted by several enemies emerging from the dark.

Not that we got hit, but we did get shot at once or twice and had our ego bruised. It's not exactly the victory lap I had in mind.

Loot time. It kinda sucks. I already have this armor so I don't even bother to pick it up.

Oooh, a lever. How come my lever doesn't say what it does? I picked up the computer map didn't I. There's not much to lose so let's pull it.

    Duh.

    Dumb decisions still plague us.

So here is our inventory going in. No changes this level but we did have the opportunity to test our plasma rifle. It's still not very reliable in the way I want to use it, but it has potential.

The next level is going to be melee focused. Perhaps this berserk pack will help us? Of course not, it will run out, but we may get a more portable version of berserk soon. The City of Skulls is next.

    Final Grade: A
what a great run after so many crappy levels. But we got shot at the end and had that acid bath... Is it a microcosm of this LP? Strong start, careless in the middle and stupid at the end.

    mini-poll: again edition
the next level is going to be a watershed moment inventory wise. We will open up at least 1 inventory slot, but also receive certain special items. Which to favor?
Choice A. Blood skull,, to be used in the mortuary most likely.
Choice B. Fire skull, to be used in the mortuary most likely.
Choice C. Hatred skull, to be used in the mortuary most likely.
Choice D. BFG9000 #2, to be used as a way to hide my skills in the mortuary for example or against bosses.

bonus choice: should we open up our inventory dramatically or not? There's a lot that could be dropped for extra ammo and extra items.

Why do you have to use spoiler for sshots? Also, is this a shell for DOOM RL, or are the new versions graphical, as I seem to remember a DOOM RL years ago that just had the basic ascii graphics.

EDIT: ah ok, it does make the thread cleaner.

A tiles version for Doom RL was just recently released. So you can play the game in either ASCII or tiles. It suits some types of roguelikes IMO. Others are quite fine without tiles.

Having two BFGs is so nice. I did my second win yesterday, lugged around 2 ordinary BFGs and one nuclear one. I managed to kill the mastermind without taking damage at all. :smug:

Choice D! Oh, and all other skulls you can fit in inventory.

Does the BFG gib corpses? If so, that's my vote. Otherwise, uh, Hatred Skull?

Hatred Skull. Berserk is invaluable for a melee build like yours.

Also, you should always pick up BFGs. They store more ammo than energy cell batches.

Honestly though, I'd recommend all of that shit for the mortuary, it's hard as fuck. Though potentially worthwhile if you do the UC first (which is totally viable with your character)...

Occasionally Fatal's LP shows how you can dodge the Cyberdemon's rockets. :p So that's one build. I never did it. My build is probably going to be to twin BFG him while using phase devices if he's ever too close? Phase devices are very useful against bosses.

I do have to say Azira you're not the only one that has enjoyed the pleasures of 2 BFGS + 1 nuclear BFG! I does gib corpes, maybe we will indeed develop a safe-ish strategy for the mortuary.

I wasn't going to mention this but... you should really just get a knife and melee him to death. With 75% melee resistance you'll tear him apart without having to use a medpack. Even better if you wear some armour with melee resists. Your aversion to melee with stronger enemies thus far has been rather bizarre.

I don't have Malicious Blades yet and won't have it in time for the Cyberdemon. Unfortunately the leveling is very slow, I shouldn't have taken Son of the Bitch.

I generally go Marine Shotgunner build but the Arena master has wiped the floor with me, whats the standard way of dealing with him?

A reliable way to take down the master on normal difficulty (the second lowest) is to first having cleared the right part of the screen, then take down all 4 cacodemons and maybe a few former humans on the left side, then take one berserk pack and the chainsaw, then rush into melee with the master.
Doing this, I've amassed a perfect kill-streak for the last 10+ games against him.

I still die stupidly by not playing carefully enough, stepping into doorways that are near a barrel, being surprised by an imp that shoots my techie, blowing up a lava barrel and ending his life instantly is a classic.. :decline:

Oh, and the above strategy works even if you have picked no melee enhancing skills at all. At least it does for me. :M

I think the Arena master is pretty resistant to bullets and shotguns, berserk chainsaw is definitely the way to go.

Interesting situations can arise when you try the Deimos start on nightmare.

It's not THAT bad. Turn on running, dodge off to the right until they blow some of themselves up, run up through the door. The rest of the level should be more empty than usual with a pack like that sitting there.

update 19: Deimos lvl 5, saying goodbye is hard

Level starts and a chill runs down my spine. From the layout for a moment I thought we were facing the cyberdemon. Luckily we aren't.

A scary level because as you make your way to the switch you can hear a hundred lost skulls all around you. And that's mostly what the level is, lost souls and their pimps.

Let's not forget to wear melee armor specifically designed for this level.

The important thing to remember is that things are much harder than they look on this level, ok they look pretty bad.

But really, many builds are probably overconfident at this point and think they can pull the switch and survive.

Even though you may have the firepower to take on the skulls, that's not the real problem. The problem is there are too many skulls, some coming from pain elementals as this one.

You may shoot down 1 skull and 3 move in closer against you. To make sure you don't brutally die, you need to have a few boxes checked.

The level can be doable if you're melee. It can be doable if you're extremely fast and thus able to run away from skulls, just don't back yourself in a corner. And it can be doable if you have very good reloading speed. What will really kill you is the reloading. A trait like shotgunner is great here. Or finally if you have a lot of melee resistance for some reason. If you don't have some of these assets, forget about it.

For our build, this level is easy as you can see. They all hit us for 2% of damage so we shrug it off. We sometimes use the assault shotgun to great effect and sometimes go melee, taking a few hits.

We've talked about many things in this LP, but let's talk about one more, planning. When I thought up my build, I didn't want to die as a technician. Having a build that could beat this level was critical, it's not an accident we can do this right now. We also lugged around an otherwise useless armor around. After this, we'll discard it.

It was important to be able to do this level. Not only because it can outright kill, or because a 100% run would be nice, but because it's actually a key part of planning not to get killed.

Let me explain. What this level has besides some exp and a BFG is plasma ammo, rockets and shotgun ammo, 100% of the time. Special levels all provide their challenges, but they actually end up making your runs easier because what they cut down on is the RNG.

You can plan around them, to help you. The city of skulls is one of the best special levels because it has plenty of ammo and because it's available in the mid-game.

When you're trying to survive, the name of the game is to minimize the RNG. You want luck out of the picture. And one way to do that is flexibility. So what does flexibility mean? well it means for example carrying a phase device in your inventory, or an enviropack just in case a switch doesn't work out, or it means going overboard on one type of ammo that you foresee chewing through.

Being flexible means you have to plan as if later levels do everything possible to screw you. You plan as if you get no ammo, you get stuck in the worst situations possible. And that means stocking up your inventory with crap in the small eventuality something unlikely but deadly will happen.

Here's a perfect example. When we first started this run, I stocked up early 2 plasma ammo in my inventory although they didn't do anything. I did it because I knew bosses or tough monsters would be a concern, and I was already planning for all that on level 4. I also thought I needed BFG ammo to beat this level, which drops BFG ammo ironically.

But then I found the Butcher's Knife, a killer melee weapon. Since melee could beat this level, and this level drops plasma ammo, the early plasma ammo hoarding was unnecessary and I dropped them. But then I needed a rapid-fire weapon so I hoarded 10mm ammo. I made use of the Hell's Armory level that reliably drops a lot of 10mm ammo to stock up.

I very heavily went into 10mm hoarding because I assumed I wouldn't find a plasma for a long while and needed a rapid-fire right away. I didn't wait to get lucky, I used Hell's Armory to set myself up with a good rapid fire. But then I got lucky, a plasma rifle dropped soon after. The chaingun wasn't that good and I jumped on the opportunity. I immediately turned the course of the ship again and got rid of all my 10mm ammo, knowing this level was coming up. If I hadn't planned around this level, maybe I would've been forced to keep the chaingun.

And now here we are, with a plasma rifle and 200 plasma ammo for BFGs or whatever. Nothing was left to luck. We had a rapid-fire all along, and now if we're lucky and have a chance to upgrade our plasma, we will and we have the ammo for it already. If not, we may end up using the nuclear plasma. Most people take the 2 BFGs, sure, but that's because they understand the principle of flexibility.

Basically flexibility entails committing inventory slots to future problems right away and more importantly, to unlikely problems. And that usually means going light on the ammo, which is not a problem if you know what special levels are there for you.

And now back to our regular programming! This final dude here is quite tough to kill and I usually just deploy the BFG. Now how can you plan to make sure you have BFG ammo for him? ;)

He's hard because he's like the pimp of pimps. He spews pain elementals that in turn spew skulls.

Just a mop-up for a melee character though, level cleared. We rejoice as two hatred skulls drop, man I might have to bring both of them in.

Time to bid the ballistic ballistic vest goodbye. I carried it along with me for just a few fights, but it did the job. It will get replaced with ammo now probably.

We have 2 inventory slots free minimum, one for the armor and one for the shockwave pack. But can any more drop? Going across the list of items, there's nothing that I can part company with. The enviro pack is too important in case we don't find a later one, the 2 phases are needed for a real crisis insurance plan, we need the other weapons...

Everything is must-own. Except the medpacks. We'll have to drop a few of them, for the greater good. It's not permanent, since we should find more medpacks in later levels if things get hard.

So we drop 1 more medpack to make room for a whole stack of rockets. The missile launcher though unwieldy should be very useful versus tough enemies at range. And of course I'm planning that I find no rockets at all over the next levels.

*sniff* goodbye medpack #10640, we hardly knew ye. And goodbye shockwave pack, we forgot to test your powers.

There won't be many levels left, every decision we make is crucial.

    Final Grade: B+
it's pretty much impossible to avoid the lost souls to hit you, they are so fast. But thanks to good planning and a good armor, the level was a joke.

    poll: polls never change edition
I'm been holding this back for a while but we are at a crisis. We are leveling too slow. We are going to get Malicious Blades (better melee, +75% melee resistance, +50% fire) at level 10 and Whizkid 2 for the indestructible fireproof armor at level 11 (+50% fire). But we could instead take indestructible fireproof armor at level 9 (next update probably) and Malicious Blades at level 11. If we do that we'll earn 2 bonus inventory slots, though admittedly lose out on using the onyx pack on any future more awesome armors.

It's a very tough choice, which shall it be codex?
Option A) Malicious Blades at level 10, Whizkid level 11
Option B) Whizkid at level 9, Malicious Blades level 11

Nice writeup, you look pretty well setup. DR brings up a valid point about the melee armor though...

I don't intent to take the cyberdemon in melee, his rockets are homing and he will likely surprise us. And does the spider mastermind have a melee attack? By then we'll have better armors and Malicious Blades against her. Hopefully we'll have Malicious Blades for the UC too, if it's at level 11, I'm not sure.
