Have you ever played Doom but thought "why isn't this game turn based?". I mean being able to play a historic adrenaline pumping first person shooter is nice, but what if it was 3rd person, top down and with inferior technology? I had the same thought and luckily for all of us Doom RL is here to answer our demands. Doom RL is a roguelike that manages to stay very close to the original Doom while incorporating all the roguelikes features we know and love (even if you're never played a roguelike you'll love it). Its genius is the fusion between the Doom and the RL. It even got a graphical update recently for the casuals out there like me. And there's no need for a kickstarter here, because the game is free.

(why don't you grab the game here and we can play together)

The title screen. A good bro suggested I start this LP after he was incapable of finishing the game. Don't worry, I've got you.

A2C056F1B71685BE5F51D54992EEEF2AE3015B63

Here is my player card. Pro. I'm kind of good at this game.

I've never cheated or anything. I've never checked the wiki except once or twice to better understand how some stats work. Some things I may not know, others I do. The fun with every roguelike is figuring everything out. Doom RL has 5 levels of badges, endless challenges and serious difficulty levels. This is a game that keeps on giving.

CCC2DB5AA08DD6287809E8D871D8DE309DC9D122

I'll start a new game. Every update with be for 1 level. Since there are around 30 levels, there will be 30 updates. That is unless I die.

83AE9480E5856A4F3C1AA45DBB645B76EB884F89

When I die, the LP is over. Only 1 chance, whatever the RNG throws at me. The game will be on the 2nd difficulty level. It opens up a lot of things that are barred in the first difficulty and it's reasonably challenging. I am so confident that I will succeed that I want to use the LP to showcase some type of safe build that everyone can try. This build will reduce the RNG you have to deal with hopefully, so follow along and maybe you'll learn a thing or two.

But you have an opportunity to screw me, as always is the case on the Codex. YOU get to choose my class. There are three classes to choose from. Classes mostly differ in what advanced traits they get to have. So a different class means a completely different build.

1805828F2E2A40AF06614675BABD184B2D896C7D

The BRO, I mean the Marine. Marines have 60 HP instead of 50 and they receive 50% duration bonus from power ups.

F6588189DDDC78011D2EB2359AD416824CF1355D

The Scout. The scout does everything 10% faster and can see all stair tiles right away. I recommend you vote for this one.

2B6D86DD5D608DBFB5741A3FCB9ACCD08DB58F90

The Technician. He can use items without a time delay, gets more map information from computers, can modify unique weapons and starts with a weapon mod in his inventory.

Vote away! Sometimes next week the poll will be closed and Phobos will await...

Scout is a pretty obvious option. Seeing all square tiles but losing HP and powerups is a very comfortable tradeoff.

update 1: Phobos lvl 1, an auspicious start

Technician it is bros. Let's make this run short and sweet.

352B685DD9474C2E9E946B9287DD9B7FFDCE6993

Technicians aren't bad. In fact I wager on the higher difficulties they are the best. They just depend too much on randomness. I am going to do a build I've never done before, and will start with a safeguard mechanism. So Finesse for my first trait.

It a pretty good thing the votes turned out Technician, the previous LP of Doom RL did a very good job of showing of Marine and Scout.

update 2: Phobos lvl 2, a morbid air

music

7130344F354C41E24F9712EFC541B8C58563BA74

good start, no enemies and a medpack.

3C986B2E88574AC600FA7120AD7FF988E169EB3D

Wide open spaces however and that's very dangerous. I fire my shotgun into the air to try to hear any monsters nearby.

75CC8C6AC039D08688F50E1C486C1B0136EFB4E0

For a moment I had forgotten to save my shotgun ammo in case things went bad, but my efforts were rewarded.

80391FEA6C7AD7F336C8718AB52448749C8AA2CC

I dispatch the shotgunner with ease. He could've been a major problem in an area so wide open, I evaded a vicious trap there and our shotgun ammo worries are over.

9BD476B164A3B853BD65B35BD535F68A80A656EB

A second shotgunner hits me though.

638809B0174F987DC7744BF2BC90FF4E4406B1B4

Well that was less than perfect. Still good since we started in a bad area. I will make a habit out of firing blind shots with the shotgun.

73EC1BFA7712647277B9563AFDB697D965BCDA53

An ambush.

453D41DE62D2717C2A21746A08A34B6335AE44F1

There's really no easy way to do this.

AEF1834356B00A9E5E5F3F4E26A26DF8120F8ADF

A switch. In the interest of a safe run, I won't be pulling any switches.

DA3992886DF54F885D1B7F75E3D857C4AB7BBFA5

Barrels right next to us, let's head back immediately lest we get ambushed... oh hey. We got ambushed, from the rear.

4950211C58C6C4409701C0330B592D5630FEE4C9

He still didn't hit us.

6F6E451988529E295098F2F6697D720F10F03923

Those barrels need to be removed to make the area safer. Go crazy on barrels in the early levels, they don't destroy the environment.

96943C740CF95D7F82032348AF900C8F81B72D65

Time to head back maybe and...

ADCD9BFCB93F38BF49A19D2F1C785F9A09755254

Oh fuck. I decide not to fire my weapon but instead spend a turn to move.

4808FD6328AB2BB3685D3D457DCD5DDF6B338AC3

I go down straight into his line of fire. He doesnt actually even fire at me.

0BE31179D768CD6D82EB29995CE8095865CB495E

No weapon switching, my pistol is tasked to do the work. Only 2 shots are needed.

9F87FF36294465D941D010377B718566FE4579B3

That turned out as well as it could be expected.

3543FF2BC635793297912EC368CD26E5B29BAA56

Let's head down.. crap.

1AC985777080E8F7BFFACF99756073AE2BD0C0A6

Good thing I have cover. Maybe we should head down instead.

EDD429E3D308A0C7640DF9AD9FBFAA5154329914

These gruns are like ants! I can't take a step forward without seeing two of them. Good thing the barrel remains.

F4CA302CC89DDBAD67FBD116030420B7B7EB075F

They're quite helpless against shotguns since they get pushed back.

I can hear lost souls all around me. I know where they are. Let's explore a bit, I want my level up first.

A1C4D1C8960F584E383C8711A42E56FC05D71FEB

Hell's Arena. Sometimes it shows up on lvl 2, sometimes on lvl 3.

7A5F5E34ED44472639B697DDED4F02DFC68F921D

I take Juggler. Now apparently this is a common trait for many people but it's a recent innovation for me. This skill will be our little insurance program as we can now fire 2 shotgun shots without reloading.

I won't risk a shootout though, why should I. That's what the pros do kids.

B04DC8E6CE16906505C3E6466919D54778BE54BD

The shotgunner isn't charging for us so let's just continue.

2E3B256BA5ADCAC7DCD21EAA667D087244AF2819

Easy kill with knockback.

0D1840C08597271C2AB5E6EAF3E7FA1903CA61FD

Looks like our old foe got the last laugh. He hits us as we venture forward. Should've blind fired a bit here.

BB7DDE5DE5B63C7958507C8D36425698333F1976

C3A9BADA246616B0E4E1EB0D01CA482F61153BB7

I'm going to use a medpack for the skulls. First they can be quite difficult, but I also usually expend 1 med-pack in the Hell's Arena so why not do it now.

FE87587290FD1F3C4AE4AF8A787B1586AD2818CD

Not a bad number, and best of all few of them in the corners.

D8CE89BE7B961B63BAFF4BEF059C3B7CCCE69ADF

one shot, 2 kills.

959EA9529681B549FE00C795EC76F3FB1A8CB89B

Instant shotgun swap, and let's use the old school firing mode to get our bullet trajectory. Both won't get hit this time.

BFFD03C513A71E6D5EE31D234A06DCC4E1A97E66

They end up dying quick without even getting to me. Time for our rewards. Large medpacks are always great and a surprise environmental suit.

47E9DB3A162608166306FE6EE033051566167DC2

The Hell's Arena awaits. I feel confident, though we do lack a piece of armor. I hope all this wide open shooting and ambushing won't be repeated in this next level!

Final Grade: A-
The level was tough but I did well. Got hit twice with shotgun blasts and that's it.

Ah Hell's Arena. The first "static" level and the Arnika Road of Doom RL. This level teaches you a lot and can almost be seen as a tutorial. Except it's the hardcore school of tutorials that kills you over and over instead of holding your hand.

Will this be the end of our technician? Well we have no spawn raping where we start so that's a surprise.

BCD571BAEF608DF5446F3D5372201EDA62E602AF

For someone lacking intuition (but has plenty of ammo) this is blind fire time.

333D9EB3656E3D143309476941E53B0F9EE05C5E

Our first enemy, he's kinda close too. Demons can really rip you a new one if they surprise you.

2 shotgun shots (juggler!) later...

361E629D65C34BD087C1F5C083CC63FE67F36A2B

The level features wide open areas and a lot of cover. It teaches you to keep to wide open areas against the demons and lost souls and that's what I'm doing. If you can see them, you can easily win.

4319E78F46687EACA5F3D04F4E4794193A15DE61

I also make sure to explore everything. The cover is randomly generated so it's important to know where it is.

I will unload my shotgun even from this distance, that's the only way against demons.

Our rewards await.

We are now 1 blue armor, 1 blue orb, 1 rocket launcher and 30 rockets richer.

final grade: A
I didn't get hit once, I did pretty well. But the level didn't test us, no ambushes while we were firing, no long shots from cacodemons, no bad spawns.

For future updates can I request a screenshot of your inventory at the end?

Sure, that's a good idea. I was going to post my inv at the end because I am already having inventory problems but I thought it wouldn't be too interesting.

Lucky break with the arena, but still, good job taking no damage. Seems like I tend to get at least one spawn with 2 or 3 monsters right next to me. Lately I've been trying to do a scout / marksman challenge, so pistols only. I've gotten through the first episode OK, but after that I tend to have trouble. Also, using pistols only, the skulls become a serious problem, since they have bullet resistance. Same story with revenants.

Oh right, here is the most OP build in the whole game I've found and best of all it's with the technician. I even won my angel of marksmanship challenge with it. Pick technician and then go for Sharpshooter. Sharpshooter does maximum damage with a 1 handed pistol. In the armony, I found a Beretta (not sure if it was random or you always find it in the marksmanship challenge) and it was GG. Berreta can burst for 6 bullets each doing 1d7 (i think). With sharpshooter and when you add 3 levels of son of a gun that's 10x6 = 60 damage every single shot. I even killed the last boss without taking damage.

The build is hard at first but from your reply it seems you can brave the early levels. Doing some basic math, even a normal pistol does 11 dmg with Sharpshooter, that has to go through some armor. Without Beretta, well that's probably harder but you could go for crafted pistols. The technician is really a bit of a late build because he can craft some really awesome stuff but you have to discover it first (that is unless you want to cheat and look at the wiki).

I've never found the First Arena challenging, you might take damage now and again but nothing that might kill you unless you're reckless

update 4: Phobos lvl 3, a lost cause

music

271F85C1E77A1FC4C32C2498ACBBE8DC7CD52524

Welcome back. We finally have our first spawn camper.

CD41F050EFAD9751F90EAD8E1D025E2E51761CB4

I recognize this layout and the lost soul, this is the type of closed map with a single enemy we sometimes get.

A240EFF5CCD13EB0BF14EABF59952B6CA2FCC413

Lost souls though, seriously? 1 shotgun blast at any range is all it takes.

16B4429AA169953B1BEDB48AF3FBD7E0E937836F

I see some medpacks, what should I drop?

A7A68EE129BC4E3BD078C2C19980F0F0E0A26453

I'll get rid of the 10mm ammo obviously. Can't believed I carried 4 of them.

C37C043A9837F767FA90DA1C5B007C0CBB2414A8

As I'm going for for medpacks, my inner jew distracts me, a rare item.

2B96EAC203BF323D5CA3572428C26B6F639370BA

Alright, this level won't be such a waste afterall.

9B563F2DF5B1059F39BB3EB72CD0A237FF41A901

Because the lost souls themselves are a joke. Maybe I should use the chaingun since I have extra ammo.

759BCAEB5C58E0ED3645F0FEBF2D62B869F4D14D

Didn't quite work, they're still too fast.

A9E1402E38962CE42434F8DC1E942DC457F3895E

This is the worst rare armor there is. I wonder when I should use it, should I really save it for the final boss?

AA8659741B577ECA53433F5C6B22FE2B4933C2D8

I don't see myself getting hit here.

E2886EB1F48AE720E851C791E18AC0D5E3A53CB7

Derp, there was only 1 left.

CCF51A8DD9EB1E8EC9EF39456D51B3E6DFD63147

And we even had to waste our first computer map. My biggest worry right now is for the health to go down to 100% too fast.

A976EF40193FF0E38F7C86BE43CB88E47E61E850

Final inventory hell. You can never have too many medpacks. Having a rare item, envirosuit and a mod pack means I already have big problems. My 10mm has to be extra low. I should use that tech pack on something.

C2493C411D866512E34A844B7D4B78FB7977CAC5

See you next time on what promises to be more challenging! I forgot about 'Hey, Not Too Rough' difficulty being like this.

I would drop the power cell, what are you going to use it for this early?

Ohhh... the 10mm ammo drop might bite you in the ass later on when you're going up against, things that don't need to be in your face to kill you. Barons etc.

I find that power cells are rare so it's better to stock up on them for when you get the BFG. I've never really thought of doing it differently? As for chainguns, there's usually enough ammo per level to replace 140 bullets, but it is risky. I went 1 chain ammo and 3 shotgun ammo when the safe thing to do is 2 and 2.

During the later levels, I pretty much just juggle between Energy weapons and the Chain-gun. Shotguns lose their steam later on when you got rocket firing baddies. Unless you have intuition.

Shotgun ammo is spent at a slower rate than 10mm, Shotguns kill using less ammo.

I was always horrible at technicians, so don't die too soon.

A good powerful chaingun might be in the cards for hell levels. The problem is that without intuition I need to expose myself to fire the rapid fire weapons. I'm not quite sure how I will do those levels without intuition.

The beretta sounds like a random, ive made it that far before several times on marksman but never seen it. I've actually taken a break since ive become incredibly bored with the early levels, and it's just become tedious when I know I'll either make it easily to the second episode or have an unlucky death/mistake.
