I'll be having a lot of spare time in the near future. What better way to spend it then killing off fellow codexians?

Lets Play Jagged Alliance 2!
ja22010052815140060.jpg

I will be using the latest of the JA2 1.13 SVN, along with the HAM suppression system enabled.

Game settings are as follows:

ja22010052815021235.jpg

For this playthrough, we will be using a slightly tweaked game. A few important settings are changed in the ini as follows:

New Aggressive AI = TRUE
This new AI is capable of launching massive attacks (with reinforcements) at important sectors. Teams of several dozen enemies will assemble to attack your sector SIMULTANEOUSLY.
This is similar to the Drassen Counterattack event, except it happens to every city, possibly several times during the campaign!
When set to TRUE, this setting has the potential of making the game considerably harder.
This sounds lovely.

Slow Progress For Enemy Items Choice = TRUE
If set to TRUE, this will remove the "equipment level" bonus given to Redshirts and Blackshirts, making them less likely to carry advanced weapons.
It also reduces the importance of distance from Sector P3 on choosing equipment for enemies.
In general, this makes all enemies carry weapons that are more or less suitable for your current "Game Progress".
This can be switched in the middle of your campagin, but will break weapon balance in such case.
It is better to change this before starting a new game.
This will nerf the high level enemy weapons, but most importantly will also stop us from acquiring said high level weapons too early, thereby making the rest of the game too easy.

Enemy AP Bonus Insane = 0
Take away the enemy AP bonus so that they are on the same level as us. Call me a wimp, but the enemy will not be cheating in my LP.

LP rules:
All IMP character slots will be filled with codexers.
Non-IMP groups are not allowed to attack the enemy. Hired mercs can only be used in defense.

IMP character submission information required:
Name
Nickname (8 Chars max)
Male/Female (Only 3 of each can exist at a time. The Codex honors those who become transexuals in its service.)
Choose a portrait:

Choose your character's appearance:
ja22010052815380074.jpg

Choose a character trait:
ja22010052815381459.jpg

If you desire, choose a character disability. You will gain 20 extra skill points to spend later. Important house rule: for the purpose of this LP, Psychotic is not considered a disability, you will not gain 20 skill points.
ja22010052815381784.jpg

Choose one, two, or no character specialties. If you choose one, it will count as an expert specialty that is approximately double strength (a few specialties will not have an expert level). For each specialty you don't take, you will gain 25 extra skill points.
ja22010052815382434.jpg

Finally, choose your skills. You have 50 skill points by default, and skills start at 55. Skills can't be reduced below 35 without going to 0, which gives 15 extra skill points. A level increase starts at a cost of 10 skill points and increases by 5 for each consecutive level. You may give me exact skill numbers or just tell me what you want to focus on and I will decide what your stats will be.
ja22010052815383629.jpg

All IMPs slots will be filled on a first come first serve basis, with exceptions being made if we particularly need a certain skill for our group.

If you want to be really hardcore, you should take normal selection of guns from Bobby Ray's shop. With higher settings you are able to get very good guns quite early, especially when you don't spend money on mercenaries.

Great isn't that much of a boost, and we will need it. IIRC, there are 10 levels of weapons based on your progress. Great gives you +1 level boost from the start, while Excellent is something like +5 and Awesome always puts you at 10. We probably won't be able to get anything better then SMGs by the time we take drassen.

Also, HAM makes it so that militia require upkeep, which exerts a pretty decent drain on the economy. You can't simply train and forget about them, defending cities costs a pretty decent percentage of mine income. Mobile militia cost 3x the upkeep. We will be training LOTS of militia to hold back Deidranna.

IMPs are 3k a piece, so as long as we can take a mine we can use X-com style unit replacement tactics.

Pariah will be an excellent teacher and medic. He will be of great use in training our first militia quickly to hold back enemy attacks.

ja22010052817083738.jpg

Orgasm is buff and shoots things. Two excellent qualities in a war. She will be stealthy as well.

ja22010052817083914.jpg

Eve will be responsible for repairing weapons and bypassing locks. She will also be our demolitions expert.

ja22010052817084146.jpg

Andhaira will be our night attacker. Pity he will probably forget where the enemy is. I didn't give him too much explosives as we already had a demolitions expert. You only need the skill to make the explosives, detonating them can be done by anyone

ja22010052817213755.jpg

Ronald McDonald will be another buff shooter. Auto Weapons and Ambidextrous will prove useful in CQC.

We now have $0. Time to get moving and take some mines. 6th group member will be added as soon as we aquire some funding.

feel free to zero med/mech/explosives/possibly leadership(?)

just make me a badass killing machine with a dragunov

also, what does HAM suppression do?

HAM suppression makes it so when an enemy starts shooting at you, the bullets suppress characters. Characters will lose AP in their next turn, be forced to duck down or go prone, and have decreased accuracy for return fire.

Personally I would recommend against zeroing mech and med. Med is always helpful in a pinch (unless you have a grudge against fellow codexers ) and mech helps you unjam your gun mid combat if the worst should happen.

Dex helps you negate an enemy's dodge bonus and helps with some mech/exp/med checks. I believe its a combination of health, agility, strength, and level that affect AP.

Bollocks, I was going to do an LP of this.

Two things though: I'd recommend against INSANE, as well as the lots of troops, as although it sounds p. cool, it gets boring in the mid-game. The AI bum rushes a sector with 60 or so troops, then you have to take it back by generally doing night-ops or whatever, then the same thing happens a couple of days later. Unless the mobile militia are properly buffed (as in, not five regulars), I can't see how spamming them will help stop the not-very-fun 'let's retake the Grumm mine (AGAIN)' grind. But YMMV

Anyway, look forward to seeing this.

Damn, I'm just now remembering how JA2 likes to hang on the enemy turn during fights with really large enemy groups. Its not a problem in non-ironman since you just reload and lose a few turns, but with ironman you lose the whole battle. So this LP is now restarted as non-ironman, but I'm not going to load spam to save anyone.

Also, when remaking the characters in the new game I realized I had misplaced Cenobyte's stats and given him 0 mechanical instead of 0 medical. This is now fixed.

We start out dropped in sector A10, one sector to the east of the standard drop zone. This is a configurable 1.13 setting, and if we didn't do this then in expert mode we would be stepping out of the chopper right into the sights of about 5 enemies. You will also notice we are being deployed at night. Hopefully it won't be too hard to see what's going on, we are going to be doing a lot of night missions.
ja22010052819585469.jpg

Reviewing our loadouts, I give Cenobyte two of the Browning HP-35's. Andhaira gets the MP5A4, which also comes with a very nice foregrip. These two are going to be my main fighters, while Orgasm will serve as a secondary shooter who will be used only when I need her weapon's range and her camouflage, as her weapon also has a loudness of 70 and will attract more attention. Andhaira and Cenobyte both have their weapon's loudness in the 50's, and while Andhaira has crappy marksmanship he also is a night ops expert which makes him awesome at night. 50 is nowhere near silent, but I would rather not have half the map after me.

ja22010052820014942.jpg

As soon as we enter the first enemy sector, we go into battle mode. Crap, are we going to get spotted and gunned down the second we enter the corner of the map?

ja22010052820023824.jpg

Nope, I just forgot that I had left forced turn mode on :retarded:

We scout out this house at the corner. Enemies won't walk in there on patrol, but they often walk right outside near the sandbags.

ja22010052820042947.jpg

At this point, I realize Andhaira brings some night vision goggles with him this time. He didn't my first game, so this is a real bonus since they are Gen 2. He now has a sight range 5 greater then most enemies, 6 if he's aiming his gun. He won't be able to hit shit at that range, but the scouting is worth it.

Sneaking around the edge of the map, Andhaira finds a lone enemy.

ja22010052820061386.jpg

He circles around behind him, gets within range, and takes him down with a single burst shot.

ja22010052820063478.jpg

Then runs like hell, like a coward :smug:

ja22010052820065280.jpg

Andhaira escapes, and the group waits around ready to gun down anyone who follows him, but nothing does.

Andhaira peeks around again, seeing a single soldier that quickly walks away.

One group member tries to make a bit of noise to draw the attention of the nearby soldier, but nothing happens.

The group circles around the map, using Andhaira to spot any soldiers that would be easy to pick off.

Andhaira barely glimpses a soldier near some sandbags in the center, moving into the house

Meanwhile, Orgasm crawls into the center.

Andhaira sees the enemy and takes a shot, but misses.

Orgasm interrupts the enemy and unloads a burst, but doesn't score the kill. Its enough firepower to halt his advance, at least

Another soldier moves right up next to Andhaira on the other side of the wall. I should probably have been watching that corner with one of my other team members, he could have died. Luckily though, he isn't seen and is put in prime position for a burst to the back of the head.

New turn! Orgasm easily finishes off her target.

Andhaira completely blows the shit out of the unsuspecting soldier just a few feet away.

Both quickly run away before the enemy horde can start bearing down on them. By the length of the enemy's turn I estimate they have at least a good 15 or so soldiers. It was at this point I remember to drop my backpacks, as that will greatly speed my escape.

Andhaira spots a soldier, but can't take the shot. WE NEED BETTER WEAPONS!

More sneaky.

Andhaira and Cenobyte try to sneak up as close as I dare and take this guy out, but Andhaira can't hit shit and Cenobyte just mildly irritates him.

The group quickly runs away, then quickly comes back. Andhaira has good cover and has a much better hit rate.

Andhaira score the kill easily.

And, of course, runs away.

But not far enough, an enemy comes up from the other side of the nearby building and fires a single shot at him. Andhaira displays his remarkable dodging ability here.

He only wounds the enemy with his counterfire, though.

The rest of the team is ready to support him. Cenobyte scores the kill after Eve and Pariah softened the target up. Andhaira will live to fight again. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Discuss!

We retreat again across the map edge.

Eve takes some potshot damage. Annoying as fuck bug in the game where sometimes the character will decide to walk backwards to your target instead of running straight at it. You have to hit alt to reset it, normally it only happens if you hold alt while issueing the move order. Its useful for slowly retreating a few squares will still looking forward, but really screws you over when you are running away and can only cross 5 spaces instead of 15.

We make it out ok, Pariah bandages Eve.

I decide to go back and check out how big their response is. We have nice cover here and could easily finish off a few more before running.

Andhaira and Cenobyte advance forward. We start seeing enemies but hold our fire since we don't have a chance of hitting

Now we can open fire. Andhaira aims for the head and deals 50 damage.

Cenobyte aims for the head and gets a kill :smug:

At this point, I decide the enemy seems weak enough for us to stand and fight. They have been scattered across the map trying to find us, being weakened in the process. Now as they react to the gunfire they are running in piecemeal and picked off one at a time. Cenobyte and Andhaira score about 10 kills between them and Orgasm covering the side picks up one of her own. The enemy soldiers don't even see them before dieing. We have really good cover here while the enemies have none at all. Cenobyte gains a level, dualshotting pistols probably makes him level quite a bit quicker then anyone else.

Eventually they stop coming, we have to move out and mop up. We find a few waiting right infront of us.

I'm pretty much bum rushing them at this point. This are weak pussy soldiers whose morale has to be in the shitter. I really want to end this mission and start scrounging weapons, its a PITA to play with such crappy weapons. Andhaira levels up.

Pariah pays for my haste with a decent wound. Thankfully all my soldiers have high health, they can take a shot. He gets bandaged up and we clear these guys out.

God fucking damnit more of them? I hunt down the last two enemies.

Again, I pay for my haste with a bullet to the face of Orgasm. I'll need to start being more careful screening the map for the last few enemies in the future, these mistakes would prove much more deadly later. At least I'll have NVGs for everyone which will make it safer though.

Area clear, finally.

Our phat lewt.

I generally won't describe minor item improvements, like the fact that Cenobyte switched out one of his Browning HP-35s for a CZ-75B which has 1 more range, 2 more reliability, and 1 less loudness. Significant items found, though, include another pair of NVG gen 2's. The SKS and the Mini-14 will give me some ranged power finally even though they require rechambering of the next round every shot. The thompson and the MP5 will be given to Pariah and Eve who desperately need something effective to shoot. And the camo helmets will give us some minor extra camouflage.

Next time we pay a visit to Miguel, pick up a pack horse, pay a visit to san mona and then begin the assault on Chitzena.

Are you talking about the ugly compression artifacts (sorry! didn't know fraps saved such crappy screenshots) or the darkness? I'll be fixing the image quality problems but the screenshots appear bright enough for me to read, though I can bump up the brightness a bit if you wish.

Here's an uncompressed image:

Here's the same image with the brightness and gamma increased a bit. From my view it kind of washes out the colors:

Maybe I'm just comfortable with the darker maps cause I know pretty much every building by heart so I don't need to see the landmarks. It does look kind of silly when enemies start popping out of thin air though.

Tell me if this appears bright enough to you. With the brightness level turned up like in the last screenshot I posted, the daytime became absolutely horrendous. I think this is a comfortable median. If its not bright enough don't worry, there isn't much night action for this segment.

We hand off the note from Enrico to a woman in the area. She takes us to the nearby rebel leader, Miguel.

When presented with the letter, Miguel and Carlos loosen up. Note that I have some kind of bug that causes the screen to continually scroll downward during this conversation. Also, finding Miguel gives Orgasm a level. There's a very good joke in there somewhere.

We get Ira. While her marksmanship is fairly low, she has good health (76), agility (72), and incredibly dexterity (91), which all boost her shooting prowess. But that's not important to us, what is important to us is that she is a teaching expert and has wisdom 83. Even though her Leadership is in the 10s at the moment, the wisdom will ensure she levels it up very quickly. Teaching expert gives +25% for both levels of teaching to the leadership skill for training militia, and being one of the rebels gives her another +10%. So for the purpose of training militia her leadership will effectively be increased by about 70%. She may be able to do some good teaching of dexterity to our own commandos (though its use drops off as you get stronger, so we probably don't need it). She is also completely free. Nice!

Elliot has bad news to report, gets smacked. Deidranna decides to send more troops at us.

We take some time to have Eve repair all of our newly found equipment. These guns will jam every other shot if we don't, and the armor won't work at all. Meanwhile Orgasm will teach weaker members some marksmanship.

Introducing our newest group member and first tranny, Ezekiel 'Root' Hardison. She has excellent shooting stats and Sniper expert level reduces the range to target's for all accuracy checks by 10%, while also increasing her maximum aiming ability (aquired after spending several extra AP aiming a shot) by 20. My second favourite trait after Night Ops. She comes with an MP5 and I hand over the SKS to her, which has a much higher range, damage and accuracy then anything else we have at the moment. Also, contrary to what I said before, the SKS does not need manually rechamber rounds between shots. I was reading the stats incorrectly.

She comes with a sniper scope 10x, but we can't use it yet. She actually came with a battle scope 7x, but the game crashed and I had to replay everything up to this point so I received a different weapon loadout this time. The 7x scope was nice, I could have used it. We should get a few soon, though.

We head off for San Mona.

We find a few patrols.

And run away almost immediately. I can't resist killing this one soldier though. Cenobyte gets the credit.

Eventually we reach San Mona. Its a zone controlled by Kingpin and essentially a neutral town in the war. You can't train militia here, though both militia and enemy forces can pass through the town and attack each other or you. The mines below hold a disturbing secret...

We stop and return to repairing items with Eve while the rest train their marksmanship. Ira starts practicing leadership, she will be left in reserve in towns after we conquer them to train up military forces. She is learning fast, already gaining 2 points in half a day.

We move into the nearby bar. Ira gives us a piece of her mind.

At night, you can box for money. You can fight up to three opponents and bet up to $5,000 each time, double or nothing. Orgasm has 85 Strength and 70 Agility, so she should be up to the challenge.

Making sure to drop all her equipment outside the ring so as not to impair her performance, Orgasm jumps in and smacks the first boxer around, sustaining minor damage which Pariah patches up.

Boxing is always hit or miss though. Generally the first person to land a shot knocks the wind out of the other, who then loses enough AP to forfeit all or all but 1 attacks the next round. Then you get punched a second time, and go down. So I remembered a handy trick to always get the first round. Orgasm enters the ring near the opponent and starts combat with her opponent. He then uses his turn entering the ring, and Orgasm has a full turn to attack with.

Since the person to land the first blow generally wins, we handily clean up the next two fighters even though the 3rd one probably should have decked Orgasm's finely shaped ass. Our funds rise to $9,280, enough to start training a militia in the next town we conquer.

I have Pariah heal up the other fighters of the ring. If I need more money and want to fight them again, this will ensure they heal so I don't accidently kill them. Its also the nice thing to do, after abusing my trick to always have the first blow. It helps improve Pariah's skill as well.

We continue with our business, repairing and training skills.

Enrico start telling us to hurry up. Fuck you man, didn't you see we started this LP on Insane? Bastard expects us to liberate an entire country in less then a month. Meanwhile, Eve gains a level.

We finish repairing all of our items and set off, leaving Ira behind to continue training herself. We are ambushed by bloodcats.

Unsuprisingly, Bullets are stronger then a large feline. You will notice I still have Eve and Pariah holding their pistols. I found them surprisingly good with pistols in our first battle, I think it may be the bonus for using a one handed weapon with both hands kicking in. Pariah still has his MP5 and Eve has a Spas-12 shotgun, both of which will be put into use if we need some close quarters shooting soon (hint: we will).

We reach the city, dodging a few patrols.

Circle around, then rest up to make sure everyone is fully prepared for the fight. Energy lower then 85% starts to hurt your accuracy.

We begin the assault on Chitzena that night.
