More update!
SDg0001.png

The RNG is not being terribly kind with either the encounter rate or the makeup as we try to leave.
SDg0002.png

Though it is at least being kind about the battles themselves. No MP drain so far.
SDg0003.png

And although these guys hit really hard, at least they aren't scoring crits.
SDg0005.png

Gila only attacks very rarely. I suppose it makes sense, since he's slow as fuck.
SDg0006.png

Of course, when he dos attack he one shots everything. Holy shit dude.
SDg0007.png

Aw crap.
SDg0008.png

Guess I should have used her spells already.
SDg0009.png

SDg0011.png

Hah! Suck on that!
SDg0013.png

:rage:
SDg0014.png

Yeah we really did not need that.
SDg0016.png

Sweet! That sounds like just what we need, lets cast that shit and-
SDg0017.png

:hmmm:
SDg0018.png

...Yeah.
SDg0019.png

Luckily, we only get poisoned once, and don't suffer any major damage.
SDg0020.png

We make it out just fine.
SDg0021.png

Gila hasn't said anything yet.
SDg0022.png

CODEX levelled up just before we got out, so this is pretty close to what he needs for a full level right now.
SDg0023.png

Oh man thats a lot of gold. Very nice.
SDg0024.png

'Sup BRO.
SDg0025.png

SDg0026.png

Would rather have your armor honestly. We're still wearing like, cloth shit.
SDg0027.png

And this matters because?
SDg0028.png

That sounds logical.
SDg0029.png

In the wrong cave? Also, dick move dude.
SDg0030.png

Leave the awesome loot to us!
SDg0031.png

Next time maybe we'll have better spells to cast on you.
SDg0032.png

Drug chick stops us from leaving after we buy an angel feather (9 MP is a lot after all, and Pyra could get drained.)
SDg0033.png

Why are you sure I'd want a chunk of ore? That makes no sense.
SDg0034.png

THIS is what we want. Finally some real armor.
SDg0035.png

Codexers slingshots himself past Milo's defense with the new upgrade. We can't afford much else though. Maybe a shield or slightly better helm, but I'd rather save for another big ticket item, if we're making this kind of cash.
SDg0036.png

Milo picks up a spell. Fairly obvious what this will do.
SDg0037.png

We try it out on CODEX first, since he has the highest armor.
SDg0039.png

That's, kind of dissapointing. Maybe it doesn't work like we thought?
SDg0040.png

Heh, we're ready for you this time you little bastard.
SDg0041.png

SDg0042.png

You're so fucked.
SDg0044.png

Quick works much much better on Pyra. Must be based on natural defense, before equipment.
SDg0045.png

I have Pyra defend, since this thing is nearly spell immune.
SDg0046.png

Milo gets a nice boost too. Though I think Luck is what determines evasion, not speed. Speed is just for turn order it seems.
SDg0047.png

Milo can at least dent the fucker in melee. Nice.
SDg0048.png

Our dents are bigger of course.

SDg0050.png

Heh, barely broke a sweat.
SDg0051.png

Cha-ching!
SDg0052.png

Codexer lands some scary crits these days.
SDg0053.png

And the new armour turns even a crit from this fucker into a joke.
SDg0054.png

Never mind normal swings.
SDg0055.png

Already have a pile of gold saved up again. I opt for checking out other paths we went by before going past where we found Gila.
SDg0057.png

The groups seem to be getting larger still.
SDg0058.png

But the rewards are nice.
SDg0059.png

REALLY nice.
SDg0061.png

Huh, a new enemy type.
SDg0062.png

Not much of a threat though.
SDg0063.png

And they go down to CODEX easily enough.
SDg0064.png

Oh, thats what makes them dangerous.
SDg0065.png

Ouch.
SDg0066.png

Ugh. This is where the actual play of combat begins to take form. It's still pretty easy, but now we actually have to think about whether we're going to lose more by getting hit from the worms or slimes, and whether it's better to use spells to kill them quick or save for healing.
SDg0067.png

Milo can't one shot the slimes.
SDg0068.png

At least their melee is weak when they don't bother to cast.
SDg0069.png

Gold just keeps climbing, along with our xp.
SDg0070.png

This'll sell for a nice chunk too.
SDg0071.png

Cool.
SDg0072.png

Oh sweet.
SDg0073.png

No boss fight? Seems odd for a trial of Strength.
SDg0074.png

We step back though, because there's still a spot to check past where Gila was, though it requires some MASSIVE backtracking.
SDg0075.png

This is what the wall looks like before we approach it by the way. So the one in the labyrinth is probably the same thing, it just didn't activate.
SDg0076.png

Cool. /puntastic
SDg0077.png

Yeah thats really helpful.
SDg0079.png

2 new spells for Milo.
SDg0080.png

Lets try this shit out! It's a lot mroe expensive than blast.

SDg0082.png

Pyra tries hers too, on the other set.
SDg0083.png

Not bad, but not enough for a kill either.
SDg0084.png

Muahaha.
SDg0085.png

Burn in nuclear fire!
SDg0086.png

Wow that's pretty illegible. The screen flashes so it was just bad luck witht the screenshot I guess. At any rate, both spells together could probably wipe a group, but separately they're kind of a waste.
SDg0088.png

All this back tracking is making us filthy rich. Also, Milo got paralyzed. I'm pretty sure thats what DETOX level 2 is for. Luckily we have smellign salts to cure it, because this shit does not wear off from what I remember.
SDg0089.png

Backtracking is taking so long we're actually running low on MP. Shit like this isn't helping.
SDg0090.png

At all.
SDg0092.png

Ugh, shortly beyond Gila is this. A chest we can't get to anyways. :rage:

I actually start using the frameskip option here. Previously I didn't feel it was necessary, since I was doing the mapping too, but just straight backtracking slog over that long a distance x2 was awfully dull.
SDg0093.png

We manage to make it back here ok, though our MP ius pretty much gone.
SDg0094.png

We come seeking the light.
SDg0095.png

Glorious 16-bit bloom.
SDg0096.png

Seems familiar.
SDg0097.png

Kind of them. Except the part that meant I had to avoid doing it and was forced to backtrack. Though I guess that is still better than forgetting and having to dive the entire cave again. And the map made it as efficient as possible.
SDg0098.png

:yeah:
SDg0099.png

I missed getting a shot of the awesome wall breaking animation that lasted maybe 3 frames.
SDg0100.png

Must lead to the next trial.
SDg0101.png

Looks fairly normal. But we'll go spend our filthy lucre for now, and check it out in the next update.

(Almost) finished Cave of Strength map:
CS3.png

Thank god we have this map, since we'll probably want/need to come back for the couple spots we couldn't get to, and exploring it from scratch would be a nightmare.

Get the mithril ore when you got the jewgold for it. With more jewgold, you'll be able to make kickass equipment with it. But yeah, that'll take a lot of jewgolds

The maps sure look like a headache, but 's all good. Your map gizmajig is neat.

Man, glad you made it out with orcdude.

Also, these graphics are totally boss. Haters gonna hate.

SDh0001.png

Indeed. Glorious victory was ours. Do we get a fat reward now? Nope. Jerk.
SDh0002.png

Geez, that doesn't even qualify as encouragement. What a douche.
SDh0003.png

Ok, but only because you got a beard.
SDh0004.png

SDh0005.png

That is pretty vague. Some sort of anti magic trap I guess?
SDh0006.png

Your men are probably all a bunch of pussies. Either that or someone cast slow on them as they entered the labyrinth.
SDh0007.png

Even Vyrun thinks we're gonna abandon this LP.
SDh0008.png

Why the fuck would we abandon it now though. Look at that cash!
SDh0009.png

Geez, she can't even hold a fucking knife. Oh well, CODEX can.
SDh0010.png

Time to reclaim the crown.
SDh0011.png

Huge armor upgrade for Pyra.
SDh0012.png

Time for a real weapon.
SDh0013.png

Nice.
SDh0014.png

Also nice. Dual wielding ftw. We sold our gauntlet since this uses the shield slot.
SDh0015.png

Damn we hit hard now.
SDh0016.png

Even broke the 3 digit barrier!
SDh0017.png

WTF is this shit?
SDh0018.png

It's glowing wierdly. Lets come back later. The other branch is normal.
SDh0020.png

Pyra gains some sweet spells.
SDh0021.png

Lets try this sucker out.
SDh0022.png

SDh0023.png

Nice, even better than Freeze 2.
SDh0024.png

Though it still can't kill shit on it's own.
SDh0025.png

Sleep is more efficient for short battles like this anyways.
SDh0026.png

Must be to the next trial. But there was another unobstructed path to explore first.
SDh0027.png

Fuck thats a lot of these guys. I blast them with both our big spells to take out 4 in the first round, worried that sleep would start wearing off/being resisted before they're all dead.
SDh0028.png

This looks familiar.
SDh0029.png

So do these.
SDh0030.png

Wow. At least now we know for sure that the enemy designers are trolling us.
SDh0031.png

More new enemies. This'd actually be really annoying of them except their spells usually fail, unlike Pyra.
SDh0032.png

Guess we can't ditch the key yet. Of course, we needed it to even get here, making this door a bit redundant.
SDh0033.png

Onward!
SDh0035.png

Damn thats effective when it lands.
SDh0036.png

Considering Pyra is taking more than 1 damage from enemy hits anyways, losing 21 defense would be REALLY bad.
SDh0037.png

It's neat that they bothered to give distinct attack descriptions for the enemies.
SDh0038.png

Second floor huh? Lets check it out then.
SDh0040.png

Hmm, a new enemy type. It dies before it gets a turn though.
SDh0041.png

those trollface bastards hit hard when they get crits! They're stronger the the crabs.

We actually find another set of upstairs quickly and get back to the first floor, in a different location.
SDh0043.png

Huh, what was that sound?
SDh0044.png

Le fuck?
SDh0045.png

SDh0046.png

Ohgodpleasedon'tkillme.
SDh0047.png

SDh0048.png

Phew.
SDh0049.png

SDh0050.png

We hear it crash into something and the screen shakes.
SDh0052.png

Huh. It's just a rock I guess? Weird. Lets take a closer look. The other side was just a dead end.
SDh0053.png

Oh boy.
SDh0054.png

SDh0055.png

Definitely the biggest enemy we've faced so far.
SDh0056.png

Let's go fucker!
SDh0059.png

Slow hits it real hard.
SDh0060.png

Aww, shit.
SDh0061.png

So much for slow.
SDh0062.png

It gets double turns as well, and hits pretty hard.
SDh0064.png

Pyra speeds up too.
SDh0066.png

Looks like we can still hurt it pretty bad.
SDh0067.png

We slow it again and even Milo can hurt the bastard.
SDh0068.png

Well that was really easy. Fucker had almost no hp. Maybe he had other nasty spells he never got to cast, like heals or something. Buying that sword + knife combo was probably a lucky break.
SDh0070.png

Oh sweet. That was fast. We've hardly explored anything so far.
SDh0072.png

SDh0073.png

So what does this thing do exactly anyways.
SDh0074.png

What kind of useless extra info is that? If 'orb of truth' didn't let you figure out that much, using bigger words to say the same thing isn't going to help anyone.
SDh0075.png

I consider leaving with our phat lewt, but we still have lots of MP left.
SDh0076.png

I decide to check out the difference between slow 2 and 1.
SDh0078.png

Ah, so slow 2 hits a whole group. Makes sense.
SDh0081.png

Slow 1 hits harder on a single target though.
SDh0082.png

The hell is this? It fell from the roof.
SDh0083.png

It jumps at us.
SDh0084.png

And then jumps back.
SDh0085.png

?
SDh0086.png

Stay still fucker!
SDh0090.png

Eventually it slows down then stops.
SDh0091.png

New miniboss type enemy I guess?
SDh0092.png

Slow works on it just fine.
SDh0094.png

He hits a little hard, but not excessively.
SDh0095.png

We do hit excessively hard.
SDh0096.png

Nice reward for such an easy fight.
SDh0097.png

Chest items are a bit better now, finally.
SDh0098.png

MP getting low. We'll leave soon.
SDh0099.png

Yet another type of slug? Well, they can't be that bad. The last ones cast Blaze one, so thee probably-
SDh0100.png

WTF!
SDh0101.png

Holy shit that hurts!
SDh0102.png

And hurts everyone!
SDh0103.png

God damn.
SDh0104.png

These guys have a special ability too.
SDh0105.png

Though it can fail, and they're kind of pussies anyways.
SDh0106.png

Nice to find as a random drop, it's like a free bonus 75 gold.
SDh0107.png

3 of them. Guess we'll finally see what they do.
SDh0108.png

Oh shit, thats a rather annoying ability for them to have.
SDh0109.png

Fortunately it fails a lot.
SDh0110.png

But damn Detox 2 is expensive.
SDh0111.png

Pretty much unavoidable to use it though.
SDh0112.png

More of this weird shit. Well, we're about to leave anyways, so lets see what it is.
SDh0114.png

Gah. That can't be good.
SDh0115.png

Searching reveals nothing.
SDh0116.png

SDh0119.png

Gah. It blasts us when we turn too, not just moving forward.
SDh0120.png

SDh0121.png

SDh0122.png

Finally got clear. Wait a sec... didn't we have way more MP than that before? Fuck!
SDh0123.png

Turned out to be a dead end anyways. Ah well. Might as well leave now, we'll have no MP after going back through that.
SDh0126.png

Orb of Truth would sell for a decent price, but we don't need the cash that badly any more. The key is only worth 225 gold.
SDh0127.png

Enlighten us, oh 'guy who knows more about shit than Milo with his fucking magic spells'
SDh0128.png

SDh0129.png

See, that is actually useful info.
SDh0130.png

Cool. We'll have to keep an eye out for suspicious walls. The mapping should help.
SDh0131.png

Fuck off furface.
SDh0132.png

It occurs to me that we could just take 5 months off with this much gold.
SDh0133.png

Lets try out the weird spiky shield.
SDh0134.png

Gah she's hard to buy for.
SDh0135.png

Better than the Main Gauche obviously. Should help Milo catch up with Codex in breaking tough enemy's armor barriers.
SDh0136.png

Ooh, another special item?
SDh0137.png

That might actually be useful, since it's not a chunk of rock.
SDh0138.png

Not really, but even if we did, we don't have that much cash.
SDh0139.png

SDh0140.png

I think we'll save up for that mithril chunk next. Our gear is looking pretty damned good, and e can't really get any better weapons yet (except that 9500 gold spear, but fuck that)

I only realised now that the weapon merchant is more than likely Gilius, the dwarf from Golden Axe. There is even the face of one of the little thieving bastard that come when you camp at night.

Ah! I knew the art style was familiar! SitD was developped by Climax, who later did Landstalker. I also loved that game as a kid! Have yet to play Shining Force though.

Edit: after quickly browsing Romhacking, it seems there is a project to translate the awesomely named Ladystalker. That should be fun!

Ladystalker. Seriously. :retarded:

Just... wow.

It seems they've done a few "-stalker" games, like Landstalker, Time Stalkers, and Ladystalker. Guess it seemed natural for them as some sort of brand recognition, but the average English level in Japan doesn't seem too high. :D

I'm trying to remember if there are more goofy monsters we haven't seen yet, but my memory is kinda failing. In any event, I really like this game. It plays kinda like "My First Dungeon Crawler" with the cartoony graphics, story progression, small party of 3, relatively small dungeon (only 5 levels plus the 4 challenges if I remember correctly, though they are quite big and convoluted) but it still maintains a decent challenge all the way.

SDi0002.png

At this level, even Pyra can lay the smackdown on this guy. It doesn't even get to make a move.
SDi0003.png

Going past the freaky moss we find a rather nice reward, though it's too late to be of use. Ah well, free monies.
SDi0004.png

Significantly less impressive.
SDi0006.png

Milo learns some new spells.
SDi0007.png

So what does this shit do anyways?
SDi0009.png

Guess we're not finding out right now.
SDi0010.png

This is more obvious. Only 4 MP though. Maybe it's single target but really strong? That'd be kinda cool.
SDi0011.png

Bwahaha!
SDi0012.png

Eat cool yellow blasty things!
SDi0013.png

Nice damage.
SDi0014.png

For a multitarget spell anyways. And it's only 4 MP. Makes the higher levels look promising.
SDi0015.png

This is entirely beneath us.
SDi0018.png

Oh, so thats what screen does. Cool.
SDi0020.png

Man the gold piles up quickly in here. Though our MP drains quickly too, between the moss and having to use spells just to get by.
SDi0021.png

If we let crap like this happen in normal fights on top of surprise rounds, we'd be really fucked.
SDi0022.png

New toy for Pyra.
SDi0023.png

Very nice, this is expensive. Alas, our most recent splurging was on expensive shields, so it's not of any real use to us.
SDi0024.png

It can't even beat the Madu on defense, never mind offense.
SDi0025.png

We sell off a bunch of our junk. Selling a rare item to the 'wrong' merchant illicits a response. We'll be able to find that morning star at the weapon dealer if we wanted it back for some reason.
SDi0026.png

Since we're rolling in cash, lets pick up that mithril.
SDi0027.png

I like how they bothered with adding in unique dialogue for all the shopkeepers for all sorts of things, like selling rare items and such. Little details like that help a lot in the long run.
SDi0028.png

See, morning star is back here again. God damn that spear is expensive though, and I'd really like a better weapon...
SDi0029.png

Perfect timing.
SDi0030.png

Well, thats expensive, but not overly so. But who is going to use it? We don't seem the Belmont types. Probably Pyra. Whips are a girl thing in jRPGs for some reason.
SDi0031.png

We grab a bronze helm. Of course, Milo can't use it. /sigh
SDi0032.png

Oh cool.
SDi0033.png

Hmmm. That probably isn't as strong as a bronze shield, so the only reason I can imagine it being that expensive is that we finally found a shield for Pyra. About time.
SDi0034.png

Gah, Milo can't even wear the handmedown leather helm.
SDi0035.png

Shit dude, we're covered in metal now. Sweet.
SDi0037.png

I decide to upgrade Pyra's armor as best I can too, since the robe is pretty cheap anyways.
SDi0038.png

So what about this ore we bought?
SDi0039.png

We needed a spell to figure that out?
SDi0040.png

Well, that's a staple of the Shining series. The question is, how? No options have come up so far.
SDi0041.png

Back to the caves. Lets try this spell out.
SDi0042.png

Success!
SDi0043.png

Uh.
SDi0044.png

I think? It doesn't seem to do much even though it worked.
SDi0050.png

Some times enemies to random useless shit too. Help balance the stronger ones I guess.
SDi0052.png

Cool, it's multi target.
SDi0054.png

Though it still isn't doing much. Maybe it's some lame subtle effect like lowering their hit rate.
SDi0055.png

Everyone is the same level and it's been a while so I figured I'd post shots of their stats again.
SDi0056.png

Wow, Milo is almsot not retarded now.
SDi0057.png

Spell list filling up nicely.
SDi0058.png

And Pyra is even kind of average in IQ score now. Breaking 3 digits on MP too.
SDi0059.png

Wonder what the last attack spell will be?
SDi0061.png

Sleep isn't effective on these higher level monsters any more.
SDi0063.png

Muddle works fine though. I just wish it did something useful.
SDi0065.png

If it's making hem miss, it's not by some massive amount. Well, it's just one cheap spell, I guess having Sleep work all game would make things too easy.
SDi0066.png

Monsters can defend too, though this is the first one to do so.
SDi0067.png

Oh cool, an actual upgrade for Milo.
SDi0068.png

Not a large one mind you, but still cool.
SDi0069.png

New enemy type in the back there. Minotaurs aren't that scary though.
SDi0073.png

God, these things are annoying in large numbers.
SDi0074.png

Did I say annoying? I meant REALLY annoying. I'll have to burn a smelling salt just to get Milo to be able to cure Codex. Maybe I should start blasting groups of them before they can move. They show up fairly often though, it's probably cheaper to-
SDi0075.png

Wat.
SDi0076.png

Holy fuck. They don't even wait for us to be beaten to death.
SDi0077.png

I hope they weren't all mixed together. I don't want to be a tranny when I get rezzed.
SDi0079.png

:rage:
SDi0080.png

Also, you took all our gold probably.
SDi0001.png

Fuck. I dunno how much we had before dying, but 1134 doesn't seem like a lot after being in there. We can't really buy anything with that much.

Internets suggest that Muddle 1 makes enemies confused and they sometimes skip an attack. Muddle 2 - drives enemies mad, sometimes making them attack each other or give you an item they carry. There's also a certain item (Demon Staff) that effectively casts a Muddle 3 spell, affecting everyone in the vicinity, including your party.
