@Ashery

There are only 4 humans you can get aside from those you start with. I don't know the exact triggers for them to appear, but it seems that one will appear if her father either dies or retires (pure soldier), two will appear simultaneously if you have other casualties (the ones you got, pure soldiers), and the fourth will appear after enough time has passed (soldier/tech? posibly soldier/scientist).
That's how I understood it, but it's been a while since I played the game.

Then you can be joined by some from other factions as well later, but their numbers are quite low (6 non-human biologicals at most), and the very last faction you might not ally with at all.

Then you can build drones of course. Drones I will not care about, and play on if they die. Not so for biological entities.

A very short update, showing how the team steamrolls some grays. :smug:

JoKa and Storyfag test out their katanas on some squishy grays outside the base entrance in this take-over mission.

Inside the base, korenzel, Anus and Bee set up a firing range, killin 6 more grays before they get a chance to react. 5 minutes total played on the two parts of this map, and it was over. I love squishing me some grays.

Research is progressing nicely, as is training. Everyone in the roster has managed to get at least one training session done. Might do an update on this later today, or tomorrow.

concerning name changes:did a bit of searching and found this. didn't try it out yet and am not even sure if it's for AL at all (doesn't really make sense if not, but well, i didn't test it)

@ashery: the pool is very limited, you only get 4 people iirc (Two twins, Olga and Rita, the last two in two versions).

EDIT: ninja'd by azira...keep up the good work!

They are indeed random, in this game and in Afterlight.

@JoKa
Thanks, will check it out. :salute:

I found this thread which should explain things. If I can get it to work, I'll start the Afterlight LP, for recruitment purposes.

I actually trained with a katana for the better part of a year. While it is cool, I fail to understand what people get so excited about... chainsaws would have been much cooler :rpgcodex:

Are you close to the end of Aftershock already ? You still have nine days on the counter, do you have to do something in particular before it hits zero ?

Screenshots are the perfect size, don't change anything.

I seem to be getting good with the SR-25, but I'm sure I could do better with a scope. Haven't humans pierced the mysteries of the lens yet ?

No labs for energy weapons at all, I assume they're worse than traditional firearms and not worth looking into.

Finally, there's a blue line going toward Mexico, did you begin to settle the new world ?

Chainsaws would be a nice touch, but they're not in this game. Afterlight will feature a buzzsaw thoug. :smug:

@korenzel
Nope, not close yet. There's a truckload more to do, but if I do manage to edit the names in Afterlight, all editing must be done before starting the game, as any further edits invalidates savegames. So I'd just get started on the recruiting thing, if I can make it work.
Besides, Afterlight is supposed to take place at roughly the same time as Aftershock, so it could be fun to have the LPs going on at the same time I though. :M
No scopes yet, as they're produced at detection equipment factories, and I cannot research detection labs or factories until I salvage a piece of detection equipment on the field of battle. Scopes will be forthcoming, have faith.
I have now put up energy weapon labs, not many yet though. Current tech doesn't compare well with ballistic counterparts.
And yes, I received some help missions in both north and south america, have a few territories there. Africa is nicely settled by now and most of minor asia. I'll produce an update tomorrow, showcasing the geospace.

It works! The instructions were simple enough, and I ran a test. I renamed Ute and Harald and fired up a new game, no bugs readily discernible.

Expect the enrollment to my Afterlight LP to open soon. :smug:

Sign me up for Afterlight as a proper Soldier guy (that one that was a Soldier/Engineer combo and was the son of someone, can't recall the name). Uta was a somewhat hilarious character :P

PS: I recommend you to install the mod Total Rebalance, if I recall correctly that one enabled allies to help you in some missions, when the combat zone was near your allies' territories. It also includes the option of allowing the enemy to call reinforcements (you can pretty much customize it at whim). There also was one mod that gave a combat class to the "main character" (you know, that guy with glasses that always appeared on the videos, I don't remember his name).

Please go to this thread and enroll. :salute:
And as to adding a soldier class to Willhelm, I can easily do that as I edit the names. It's the same files I'd have to mess around with. :smug: I don't think I will though.
As to the Total Rebalance mod, that depends on whether it'll mess with my alterations. I don't think it does, but I'll have to investigate.

While the countdown clock continues towards the inevitable climax, our troops are busy grabbing territory and researching all they can, to best be prepared for whatever may come.
Our eggheads on the Laputa has dug more dirt up on the reticulans, and here's what our head researcher has to say on the matter.

So they tried to grow a god-like intelligence, and it blew up in their faces? :retarded: Big surprise there. M:
At least the game has the decency to suggest the Council of Earth were high when they accepted the ridiculan offer. What is interesting though, is that they tell us the reticulans were not all in agreement about this experiment. This will have an impact on Afterlight, which is set to take place at roughly the same time as Aftershock.
Now, last night I promised korenzel an overview of the globe, and here it is, in all it's map-painted glory.

The red territories are cultist occupied, the blue are ours. As you can see from the resource breakdown at the top of the screen, we're running a pretty hefty deficit in alien tech. But our other resources enable us to trade for alien tech with the psionics, so we're in the green.
I've left a single cultist territory in asia minor, which I could have easily taken. Instead, I've built defensive structures in the territories adjacent. This is because I'm interested in seeing how much good these defensive structures are. And I have an ulterior motive as well, but more on that as we grow closer to exterminating the cultist presence. Then, I will show you why I preserve this small cultist held territory. :smug:
Nothing much interesting has happened. So I'll show you some new armour and equipment that has become available.

The medium armour is what most of our human troops will be wearing. The current count says that only two humans have the proper training to wear heavy armour: dextermorg and Gondolin. :salute: Some of our human troops are still so weak that they're stuck in light armour, but later advances in research will make up for this.
The psionic armour is a pretty significant step up, as the psionics are the most squishy recruits around. Bee is keeping well out of range though, due to her sniper training, and is rarely in any danger. Phoenix is another matter, so I'm keeping her away from active duty until I can stick her in some armour.
All our cyborgs start with pretty decent innate resistances, so they're good. :smug:
Now, research has progressed to the point that we'd be able to produce robotic henchmen:

These cores can be given different types of locomotion. These pictures explain what chassis' are compatible with what cores:

A drone isn't worth much without a weapon though, and here's the ideas our researchers have come up with:

I'm considering building a fighter drone on wheels, and sticking a machine gun on it, or a scout drone on hover chassis and giving it a shotgun. I'm not convinced though, as they'd take the space of a biological, who can gain experience, which drones can't.
The researchers apparently thought the defender drone was too vulnerable, as they also came up with a shield:

Meh. At least we've done some other research as well. Drugs!

I haven't been doping up our soldiers yet, but both our katana-wielding lunatics, JoKa and Storyfag are lugging around stimulants. So far, it has seemed more sensible to charge in and cut the opposition to ribbons, instead of wasting time getting wasted, but more heavy opposition is up soon, and then the drugs might see some use. :smug:

Well, only 4 days left on the counter. Does anyone want to see an updated roster, or should I just get on with the storyline?

I like how the game admits it was pretty much trolling you with that ending. I vote for seeing the roster, I would like to see if Claus has progressed.

I'm off to an 18-hour shift shortly, so no further updates will be forthcoming today. I hope to bring you an update of both the roster and the storyline tomorrow though. :salute:

And yes, Claus has progressed, and now has technician training. :smug:

A view of the soldiers' progresses would be nice.

The geoscape is very colorful, but something bugs me. Are all those resource icon on the planet territories you had to capture ? There are... a lot of them. I'm somewhat inclined to give this game another try thanks to your LP, but I really don't feel doing the same territory capture mission over and over. Can one get by without expanding as much as you do ?

The game is a bit of a grind with the capturing of territories yes, and yes, you have to do a tactical mission for every territory you take over, except for the first mission which wins you 2 territories.
The actual missions you have to do can differ though. In a neutral territory (mutant held), you either fight mutants or reticulans, and the mission is either to kill a sufficient amount of enemies, or capture one specific enemy. Some of the missions are 2-map affairs.
In friendly territory (human, cyborg, psionic) you can get unsolicited help missions where you either have to kill a suffícient amount of enemies, capture a specific enemy, kill a sufficient amount of enemies by helping out local troops (where more than 50% have to survive), find and escort a single NPC to safety or escort a group of civilians across the map.
In hostile territory (held by cultists) you have the same missions so far as in the neutral territory. Once the counter reaches zero, something else will happen. And you will eventually get missions where you have to fetch a McGuffin.

You don't have to go about it as aggressively as I have though. But I did it to quickly build my resource stockpiles. Laboratories cost an upkeep which is higher for more advanced labs. The actual mines are randomized, as are their output. I've had games where it was the high-tech resource I lacked, and not the alien tech one.

In short, no, you don't have to go about it the same way I do. But it does help your research and production capabilities. :salute:

Alright, got the pics ready, now I just need to get them uploaded and write the update. Of course, I need to get off work too, but one thing at a time.
Yes. I played while at work. Sometimes things just work out. :smug:

Got pictures of all recruits, their training tab and career tab. I also got some screenshots of the plot advancing, and a few of combat, but only a few. The time for possibly starting the Afterlight LP draws near, but I'll give some more people the chance of enrolling. Let's say enrollment stops monday. That should be enough time I think.

Wargot attack

Ah, I woke too early from my evening-/night shift and couldn't fall asleep again, so I thought I might as well produce the update from work. I just hope my smartphone has enough data traffic left for this month, or we'll be stuck with half an update.:P
First off, our researchers on the Laputa finishes research into the "Reticulan Aftermath". This details some of what happened after the last game ended, supposing we took the ridiculans up on their offer:

Serves them right, the little bastards. Being almost wiped out by their own "god". :incline: I guess this also explains why most reticulans in Aftershock seem like such pushovers..
Shortly after this piece of fluff, our researchers tries to analyze our main opponents, the cultists.

They've also seen the walnut in the sky approaching Earth? Whatever could this mean I wonder..
We won't have to wait long though, as the counter reveals.

But before we let the counter reach zero, and Stuff Happens, we'll take a look at the roster. In random order, here are our soldiers! :salute:

JoKa is our most experienced soldier, he has trained in all his desired fields, but he has yet to master them. His excellent speed makes him very useful in assaults though, as I can have him running around scouting out the map, and if he gets into trouble, most of the time he can just turn around and run away before it gets too tough.
Being constantly in the frontline, he has racked up the second highest number of kills, 74. :salute:

Ah, Gondolin. One of the two people on the team who can wear heavy armour. He's wielding his machine gun with deadly accuracy and has killed the mystical number of 42 aliens! :salute: His next training we're aiming for is the final level of technician training, as it will make him even more deadly with heavy weaponry. :incline:

Phoenix hasn't seen that many missions yet, as she was only a short while ago issued a psi-suit, slightly increasing her resistance to damage. Psionics are squishy, and her build is better suited for shorter range engagements than that of Bee, but now that she has the second level of ranger training, she can dual-wield one handed weapons. This could be interesting as soon as we stick some vambraces on her, as she'll then be able to dual-wield poison, paralysis or confusion projectors.

chzr is a decent sniper. She hasn't reached the highest tier of training yet, and so cannot aim at specific body parts. But will be able to soon. :smug: I've given her the first tier of trooper, even though she hasn't specialized fully in sniper training, seeing as we have several snipers, but fewer troops able to use rocket launchers. chzr has an awful strength attribute though, so she'll need to up that a bit, if she's to wear better armour, and the Barrett is currently out of her reach as well. Fortunately, she's quite deadly with the SR-25. :salute:

...

And here's where my data traffic limit cut in. So now I'm back at home, and ready to upload the last pictures. We continue with korenzel.

korenzel is one deadly medic! She just finished third tier medic training, meaning that from now on, all healing done in base is much faster. :incline: She has also managed to kill 75 enemies, more than any other in the team! Very impressive, considering she still only has sniper training on tier 1. :salute:

Bee has finalized her psionic training and sniper training both, she only needs to focus on scout training from now on. She has a very impressive long range skill, and for some reason, she has totally avoided injury so far. :salute: Being a psionic is working out pretty well for her so far.

Anus is another of our top-trained snipers, and she's killed 59 enemies in 44 missions. Needless to say, having her along is a great help. :salute: She's also close to getting third tier scout training, which will help greatly when prioritizing targets. :smug:

K. Slips.. Well, 7 missions attended, 1 enemy killed. Not exactly impressive. And sad to say, he's not getting much love. The other, more experienced soldiers, usually gets picked before this guy. Maybe he will see more action soon, the top-tier training programs can keep people out of action for up to three game days.

Sergiu64. Even less impressive, 7 missions, 0 kills. Almost a mirror image of K. Slips.

Commissar on the other hand has his excellent speed marking him as special. He also has a very good close range skill, meaning that he's quite useful for scouting the maps, and often quite deadly with his shotgun. He might run afoul of the same poor luck as his predecessor eklektyk, and more than once has he been down and bleeding, but he's managed to scrape through due to allies being close enough to rescue him. :salute:

EdwardRM, dual-wielding reticulan blasters. These puppies only do stun damage, and this is perfect in capture missions! His speed lets him close with the enemy quickly, and when he fires, it usually doesn't take long until the target is sound asleep.
That isn't as useful when it isn't a capture mission though, which explains why he's only seen 13 missions, but he's useful in his own right. :salute:

Claus, our technician/medic cyborg. He can now use heavy weapons, and it's a mistake he's been depicted here with an assault rifle. He will be issued a machinegun post-haste. :salute:

Ah, Storyfag. He usually runs tandem with JoKa, either they're both armed with assault rifles as depicted, or if they're hunting grays, they wield their katanas. It's greatly satisfying seeing them carve a bloody path. Things will improve further when he completes his third tier of stalker training, which greatly improves the chances of critical hits with the katana. :incline:

dextermorg is finalizing his technician training. He's already deadly with his machinegun, having killed 47 enemies in 41 engagements, but this will improve even beyond this due to the bonus he'll get from third tier tech training. :smug: He's also often in the thick of it, illustrated by his "damage taken" score. That is permanent damage taken, the kind that can only be healed back at base. He deals and he takes, like a proper soldier. :salute:

Cassidy, our cyborg sniper. He's currently focusing on getting the top tier sniper training, so he can start making headshots. He's usually outdone by the other snipers on the team, but I'm of the opinion that you can hardly have too many snipers. :smug:

Ah, Desmodus. Dual pistol wielding lunatic. He charges in, time and again, and gets punished for it. He's taken the most damage of any in the team, yet he's always ready for another round. He'll be the first of the cyborgs to get the improved cyborg body armour when it becomes available. :salute:

Before we started on the roster overview, the countdown clock had almost reached zero. What happens when it does then?
This:

We've been attacked by a giant space walnut!! :retarded:
Oh well. Even though the barely legible text says "all hands to battle stations", you can only choose 7 team members to repel the attack. And they start spread out over the station, as you can see from these pictures.

Bee's in the worst spot of the 7 troopers, so she hastily beats a retreat.

Anus takes on three (the third not visible in this screen yet) enemies on her own. :salute:

And Bee gets her revenge on one of the three that spawned almost on top of her. Note the 1990 damage she does. :salute:

A critical hit always knocks and enemy down, taking the heat off your fighters. Of course, this also holds true if your troops are hit critically, so beware. The fight is rather quickly concluded though, and our snazzily dressed PR guy is ecstatic.

The researchers are all over the captured craft, and after a closer analysis, we try to send a manned probe (what where they thinking?!?) to the space walnut.

Hmm.. Guess we'll have to wait and see what our R&D boys come up with. In the meanwhile, we'll occupy ourselves with the slaughter of mutants and cultists. :smug: Who knows, maybe we'll learn more about these "Wargots"?
