Savage Empire Part 1: Valley of the Dinosaurs

Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire

box.jpg

Part 1: Valley of the Dinosaurs

Welcome to my coverage of another great Ultima game. These next two games are often considered canonical, they are not usually considered as part of the 'main' series. Basically, Origin decided to get more mileage out of the Ultima VI engine and tried to introduce the Ultima series to 'casual' gamers. Thus we have the Worlds of Ultima series. While both of these next two games have the typical trappings of RPGs (stats, levels, XP, etc.), they play more like adventure games.

The first of these two games is Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire. As you might have guessed from looking at the box, it takes place in a 'valley that time forgot.' Somehow, devious magic was cast, and dinosaurs from several different eras and humans from different continents and time periods were transported to a remote valley. It is nice that they actually come up with an appropriate reason for why all these disparate creatures have shown up together. Since I always liked this kind of setting, I am really enjoying this game! :)

The first thing we see is the animated logo for the Origin FX-Engine.

It does not look like much today, but I bet it wowed people back in 1990.

Here are the credits.

savage0012.png

It is nice to see how the view pans to the right.

savage0013.png

Here is the main screen. Let's see what has happened.

savage0014.png

For several nights, the Avatar has dreamed that he is in a jungle, and he sees a hot savage chick get attacked by a Pterodactyl.

savage0016.png

This night, Lord British also appears in his dream and tells him to seek out information on ruined moonstones.

savage0017.png

The Avatar decides to seek help from his friend, Professor Rafkin, who studies Natural History.

savage0018.png

When he arrives at the lab, an obnoxious reporter, Jimmy Malone, is waiting to interview Professor Malone for a story he is writing for the magazine Ultimate Adventures. The Avatar asks Rafkin about moonstones, and, when given a good description, the Professor produces a stone that looks just like a moonstone, but it is fractured. The Professor decides to run some tests on the stone.

savage0019.png

Unfortunately, the tests cause the moonstone to create a portal that transports the Avatar, Professor Rafkin, Jimmy Malone and a good chunk of the laboratory to a mysterious jungle.

savage0020.png

Shortly upon arriving, everyone realizes they are not in Kansas anymore.

savage0021.png

The Avatar then sees the woman from his dreams. He manages to rescue her.

savage0022.png

seavatar.png
Oh yeah! I bet I can guess how she will show her gratitude. :D

savage0023.png

seavatar.png
Fucking cockblock! :x

In the confusion of battle, Jimmy and Rafkin flee into the jungle.

savage0024.png

Alright, now it is time to create a new character!

savage0025.png
savage0026.png
savage0027.png

savage0029.png

At least I can pick my name.

savage0030.png

seavatar.png
I'm not no pussy guard!

savage0031.png

savage0032.png

seavatar.png
It's not my problem.

savage0033.png

seavatar.png
Murderer's get what they deserve (unless it is me ).

savage0034.png

I have no idea what the hell the various answers do. Anyway, let's fire up the game!

savage0035.png

On the default DOSBox cycles, the loading screen takes a damn long time. I also have no idea what Roland is supposed to be.

Anyway, here is a map of the game.

eodonmap.jpg

Notice the map is in English. Score!

The Avatar awakens in a shaman's hut in the village of the Kurak's, who seem to be Amazonian.

savage0036.png
savage0037.png
savage0038.png
savage0039.png

seavatar.png
Huh?!

savage0040.png

Uh oh! Copy protection! I consult page 22 of the manual (which is actually designed to look like an issue of the Ultimate Adventures periodical Jimmy writes for).

seavatar.png
A weatherproof cover.

savage0042.png
savage0043.png
savage0044.png

Basically, he is saying that I will be dragged back here for resurrection if I die.

savage0045.png

seavatar.png
Wait, did you just say Triolo?!

savage0046.png

seavatar.png
What is your name?

savage0047.png

seavatar.png
What do you do?

savage0048.png

seavatar.png
You work with spirits?

savage0049.png

seavatar.png
BTW, where did that hot piece of ass, whatwashername . . . Aiela maybe, where did she go?

savage0053.png
savage0054.png

seavatar.png
Cool, so where did the ol' prof get off to?

savage0112.png

seavatar.png
How about that annoying ass reporter?

savage0111.png

seavatar.png
Later!

savage0055.png

Alright, here is the game world. As you can see it looks like Ultima VI with a thematically appropriate interface. I grab all the fruit and speak to my new party member 'Triolo.'

savage0056.png
savage0057.png

seavatar.png
So, Triolo, what do you do?

savage0058.png

seavatar.png
Cool. Later!

savage0059.png

These are the three reagents in this game. I give them to Triolo.

savage0060.png

seavatar.png
Ooh! Oooh! Ahh! Ahh!

Anyway, let's head outside. Once there I meet a girl that almost makes me forget about Aiela.

savage0061.png

seavatar.png
Helloooo, nurse!

seavatar.png
BTW, WTF is a schweitzer?!

savage0062.png

seavatar.png
So that is where the Professor got off to!

avatar Well, what else do you do?

savage1227.png

seavatar.png
Of course! Are you fucking kidding me?

savage1228.png
savage1229.png

seavatar.png
SCHWING!! Let's go someplace quiet.

savage0064.png

seavatar.png
Yes!

savage0065.png

Unfortunately, she keeps asking until I tell her no. I do not know if this is a bug or not.

savage0066.png

seavatar.png
God damn! Two fucking cockblocks in the same update!

Now, I can either head off after Jimmy and Rafkin right away or see if I can find the hot chick.

seavatar.png
Hot chick! Hot chick!

Okay.

Anyway, let's talk to Generic Kurali Tribeswoman #1.

savage0067.png
savage0068.png
savage0069.png

seavatar.png
Uh, tell me about the Urali.

savage0070.png
savage0071.png

seavatar.png
Where can I find this Topuru?

savage0072.png

Alright, I will head north to the Barako tribe.

savage0074.png

Apparently, these savages have not developed the concept of private property.

seavatar.png
SWEET!!

This means I can walk off with anything, and a bow is handy to have right now. I now talk to the chief.

savage0599.png
savage0600.png

seavatar.png
So, where did your hot daughter Aiela run off to again?

savage0605.png
savage0606.png

seavatar.png
Where is that Darden guy? His nuts has an appointment with my boots.

savage0601.png

seavatar.png
Screw the 'peaceful savage' bullshit?! Where can I find them?

savage0602.png
savage0603.png

seavatar.png
Where can I find this Topuru?

savage0604.png

savage0610.png

savage0611.png

savage0612.png

I head up the road to the north.

savage0076.png

seavatar.png
Cool. I am glad it is friendly.

savage0078.png

I now have to pass over a rope bridge to get to Barako territory.

savage0079.png

It quickly gets dark. It appears that night time lasts at least twice as long as daytime in this game. Weird!

savage0080.png

Anyway, we finally arrive in the Barako village, the home of the mandatory group of primitive people who happen to be white so Origin can evade claims of racism. Let's talk to one generic townsman.

savage0081.png
savage0082.png
savage0083.png
savage0084.png
savage0085.png
savage0086.png

Alright, let's find the chief.

savage0087.png

seavatar.png
Hellooo, chief!

savage0088.png

seavatar.png
Do you have a name, or should I just refer to you as DAAMN?!

sehalawa.png
Halawa, mother of Halisa.

seavatar.png
So, what do you do around here . . . besides me?

savage0089.png

seavatar.png
Is your daughter as fine as you, or am I robbing the cradle?

savage0090.png
savage0091.png
savage0092.png

seavatar.png
Rats! It looks like this is another damn quest. I am batting 0-3 here!

Oh well, let's see if I can find this Topuru.

savage0093.png

I head west from the Barako village until I encounter a river.

seavatar.png
I don't like the look of that shark!

savage0094.png
savage0095.png

seavatar.png
Hah! Now, let's ride the raft!

savage0096.png

seavatar.png
God Damnit!

Anyway, I head back to the Kurak tribe, and on the way, I encounter this fellow.

savage0097.png

seavatar.png
Oh, you have got to be kidding me!

seavatar.png
Arrggh . . . what is your name?

savage0099.png

seavatar.png
What do you mean 'gave'?

savage0100.png
savage0101.png
savage0102.png

Is the game trying to tell me Iolo, Shamino and probably Dupre are here in Eodon as well? WTF?!

seavatar.png
So, 'Shamuru', what are you doing out here?

savage0103.png
savage0104.png

seavatar.png
Sure, you can join.

savage0105.png

savage0106.png

And then there were three.

savage0107.png
savage0108.png

Here we are attacked by a Pterodactyl.

savage0109.png
savage0110.png

I stop by Intanya's hut for some healing. I then head east.

I encounter a man on the road.

savage0113.png

seavatar.png
Do you know where Rafkin is?

savage0114.png
savage0116.png

seavatar.png
What the fuck is a shweitzer?!

savage0117.png

seavatar.png
Uhh . . . yes.

savage0118.png

Alright, let's speak with the Shaman . . . quickly.

savage0119.png

Surprisingly, he does not have a bone through his nose.

seavatar.png
Not that she's my type, but what is Sahree like?

savage0120.png
savage0121.png
savage0122.png

seavatar.png
'Kay! Bye now!

I finally find the professor.

savage0123.png
savage0124.png
savage0125.png
savage0126.png
savage0127.png

seavatar.png

seavatar.png
So, it looks like you are not as useless as I thought you would be. Why don't you come with me?

savage0147.png

Now all I need to do is find Jimmy Malone.

seavatar.png
I don't wanna . . .

Tough. He and his notebook act as an ersatz journal, and that can be useful.

seavatar.png
Do we have to do it now?

What do you mean?

seavatar.png
I want to find Professor Rafkin's lab to see if we can find any good stuff there.

Okay.

seavatar.png
:)

I head back to the Kurali village and then head south. Here are some photos of my journey.

savage0148.png
savage0149.png

savage0151.png

I make a note of where parrots usually reside. They can be useful later.

savage0152.png

Yucca plants are a rich source of flax seed.

savage0153.png

I note that tar pits can be found south of the Kurak village.

savage0154.png

seavatar.png
So this is a Myrmidex?

It looks like it!

seavatar.png
They are just giant bugs! Did Garriott declare creative bankrupcy or what?!

savage0155.png

seavatar.png
Success! Now, let's loot the place!

savage0156.png
savage0158.png
savage0159.png
savage0160.png
savage0161.png
savage0162.png
savage0164.png
savage0165.png
savage0167.png
savage0169.png
savage0171.png

I make sure to take the gems, the modern rifle (i.e. the best weapon in the game), some gunpowder, some clay pots, the metal bucket, the fireman's axe (the best melee weapon in the game), the wire screen, and a mortar. If you are wondering, the key is absolutely useless; it does not open anything in the game. There are some other items I forget to take, but I will come back for them later.

I now head back to the Yolaru tribe and head south. I take the western branch at the first fork in the road and climb up a hill. A strange man waits for me up there.

savage0172.png

seavatar.png
Who the hell are you?

savage0173.png

seavatar.png
So, TWO-mash, what do you do?

savage0174.png
savage0175.png

seavatar.png
Sure.

savage0176.png

seavatar.png
Let's go with small.

savage0177.png
savage0178.png

seavatar.png
Alright! Alright! I want a large drum!

savage0180.png

seavatar.png
Uh . . . Really large.

savage0181.png

seavatar.png
Gimme the biggest one you got.

savage0184.png
savage0185.png
savage0186.png
savage0187.png

Alright, if I ever need a big drum, I now know whom to ask to build it. I follow the road south around the Nahuatla city of Tichticatl. I then have to climb over a few hills before I see the road again (Who keeps-up that dirt road anyway?).

savage0191.png
savage0192.png

I encounter a sabre-toothed tiger on my journey, but it is a pushover. When I find the road I head a long way to the west. At a fork in the road, I head north across a stream to Disquiqui territory.

savage0205.png

I see an oddly-dressed man in one of the southern buildings. I wonder who he is.

savage0206.png

Well, it seems as if Jimmy has been taken prisoner by the Disquiqui. I guess I should try to free him, so I speak with the chief.

savage0280.png

He is the one north of the Avatar.

savage0194.png

seavatar.png
Uh . . . who are you?

savage0195.png

seavatar.png
Ow! For that, I order you to release Jimmy Malone!

savage0196.png
savage0197.png

seavatar.png
Well, that does not seem too bad. I wonder if Chafedick's daughter will prove helpful.

savage0198.png

seavatar.png
Oh. My. God.

seavatar.png
We have to get Jimmy out of here and fast!

seavatar.png
So, uh, Mrs. Guoblum, what do you do around here?

savage0199.png

seavatar.png
What the hell is pulque?

savage0200.png

seavatar.png
I am going to regret this . . .

savage0201.png
savage0203.png

seavatar.png
Before I faint, let me ask you why are you holding Jimmy Malone?

savage0204.png

Well, while we are searching the village, let's loot it.

savage0207.png

This will be useful later.

savage0208.png

I think this helps with throwing spears, but I don't need it. Now, let's see if we can't pump Generic Disquiqui Townsperson for some useful information.

savage0209.png

Apparently, there is an exiled Nahuatla king in this village. Let's find him.

savage0210.png

seavatar.png
Damn, is this the Valley of the Bangable Women or what?

What.

seavatar.png
I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours.

savage0211.png

seavatar.png
So, what will you be doing tomorrow that's not me?

savage0212.png
savage0213.png

She basically tells me what I already know.

seavatar.png
That's alright.

savage0214.png

seavatar.png
Who are you?

savage0215.png

Here is the man we want.

seavatar.png
What are you?

savage0216.png

seavatar.png
Shame. Why did you get exiled?

savage0217.png

seavatar.png
Who is this Zipactriotl?

savage0218.png
savage0219.png
savage0220.png

seavatar.png
What can you tell me about your cousin, Huitlapacti?

savage0221.png

seavatar.png
What about your shaman, Oaxtepec?

savage0222.png
savage0223.png

seavatar.png
So, if you are such a mighty warrior, why have you not fought to reclaim your throne?

savage0224.png

seavatar.png
Tell me more about your tribe.

savage0225.png

seavatar.png
So, you are of the Nahuatla?

savage0227.png

seavatar.png
Have you faced the Myrmidex?

semoctapotl.png
The Myrmidex. Yes, they are fierce. No single tribe can stand against them ... and no one, not even I, can see to unite the tribes against them.

seavatar.png
I would like to try.

savage0229.png
savage0230.png
savage0232.png
savage0233.png

Alright, let's go spring Jimmy from prison. The door is not even locked.

savage0234.png

seavatar.png
Tell me about your job.

savage0235.png
savage0236.png

seavatar.png
Let's get you up to speed.

savage0237.png
savage0238.png
savage0239.png
savage0240.png
savage0241.png
savage0242.png
savage0243.png

Well, let's see if ol' Chafblum wants to join my alliance.

savage0244.png

seavatar.png
Say, Chappy ol' buddy, would you mind uniting with the other tribes to crush the Myrmidex?

savage0279.png

seavatar.png
Alright, so I need to find a Tyrannosaurus Rex named Sharptooth and put a bell around its neck. To do this, I have to knock it out with the spear of Shamap.

I head south to the stream. Now I need to make the spear of Shamap. Fortunately, I already picked up a spear somewhere.

savage0285.png
savage0286.png

To make the spear of Shamap, I need to use a jug of plachta on a spear.

savage0287.png

From the stepping stones, Sharptooth is a ways to the east and a little way to the north.

savage0288.png

seavatar.png
If I get within a space of a T-Rex, I am dead meat.

seavatar.png
Fortunately, I can just throw the spear from here.

savage0289.png

seavatar.png
Nighty Night! Don't let the bedbugs bite!

savage0290.png

With the bell securely fastened around the T-Rex's neck, I head back to Chafblum.

savage0292.png

Yeah. One down; many more to go! Next time I will cover some of the more interesting aspects of The Savage Empire.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA it's the same logo they used for Wing Commander II. 20 years later I can still hear it in full OPL2 glory. Those were the days.

Amazing worl Elzair. Carry on!

God damn, this game reawakened my passion for something else besides fantasy, that 'The Lost World'-type of setting. I think I'm gonna play it too sometime in the future. Great lp, can't wait for the next update!

Savage Empire Part 2: The Anarcho-Primitivist's Cookbook

Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire

Part 2: The Anarcho-Primitivist's Cookbook

Alright, it is time to get EXPLOSIVE!!

savage0282.png

First, let's see what the hell this glowing thing south of the Disquiqui tribe is.

savage0293.png

It is apparently a teleporter that will warp me to a 'hub' that can take me near any of the major tribes.

*A*?**
*****B
C*****
*****D
E*****
**F*G*

A: Barako
B: Kurak
C: Sakhra
D: Tichticatl
E: Barab
F: Disquiqui
G: Jukari

savage0294.png

Unfortunately, I tend to get swarmed by Myrmidex at this location, so I skedaddle to the nearest teleport pad to the east.

savager000.png

This puts me near the Jukari village. I have no idea which primitive society they are supposed to rip-off.

savager001.png
savager002.png
savager003.png

This is what every generic townsperson says. It seems like there are only a handful of unique NPCs in the entire game.

savager006.png
savager007.png
savager009.png

Here are some totems that Triolo can use to cast spells. I make a note to cover that eventually.

savager010.png

I finally find the chief.

savager011.png
savager012.png
savager013.png

seavatar.png
So, Ursa Minor, how about joining the other tribes in a little alliance to defeat the Myrmidex?

savager024.png
savager025.png
savager026.png

seavatar.png
Ooooh! I'm in; tell me about this hide.

savager022.png

seavatar.png
Alright, caveman, tell me about your cave.

savager014.png
savager015.png
savager016.png

seavatar.png
This flowing rock would not happen to be magma, would it?

serafkin.png
Bah! It is lava! It is only called 'magma' when it is below the Earth's surface!

seavatar.png
Alright, already. So, is it lava?

savager018.png

seavatar.png
Yep. It's lava.

savager019.png
savager020.png

serafkin.png
I had a fire extinguisher in my lab.

seavatar.png
That idea is retarded! Fire extinguishers work by eliminating a fire's oxygen supply. They will do nothing to cool molten rock!

serafkin.png
Well, it might work.

seavatar.png
Yeah, and pigs might fly out of my ass!

I head east following the southern cliff wall until I am stopped by lava.

savager027.png

seavatar.png
If this works, it will be one of the most retarded things ever.

savager028.png
savager029.png

facepalm1ve4.jpg

savage0295.png

The cave I want is the one in the southeast corner of the map.

savage0297.png

seavatar.png
He was not kidding. This place is filled with shinies! Too bad there's no one around to trade them to.

savage0298.png

I swipe the sacred hide and head back.

savage0302.png

seavatar.png
Goddamnit.

savage0303.png

Alright, let's talk to ol' Ursa Minor again.

savage0304.png
savage0306.png

He finally agrees to join the Rebel Alliance.

seavatar.png
Let's see who else is around.

I find one guy wandering the roads north of the Jukari territory.

savage0307.png

savage0308.png

seavatar.png
Uh . . . okay. So, what are you up to these days, Pever?

savage0309.png

I now save my game.

seavatar.png
Do you mean killing Myrmidex?

savage0312.png

seavatar.png
Uh oh. It looks like I will have to put him down like a rabid dog.

savage0313.png

He is not too tough, but I reload because he might be useful later.

savage0341.png

Since I am hungry, I swipe some food from the Disquiqui banquet.

savage0342.png

I need a special stick, but this is not it.

It is now time for the fun stuff!
I ask Professor Rafkin about how to make some fun items.

seavatar.png
So, prof, how do I make those bombs you were referring to earlier?

savage0128.png

seavatar.png
Well, I mostly wanted to just make a bomb, but a grenade would be nice.

seavatar.png
Yes, you are.

seavatar.png
So, where do I get some pot(s)?

savage0135.png

A kiln is basically a primitive oven.

seavatar.png
So, where might I find the tar?

savage0136.png

Fortunately, I took a metal bucket from the lab.

seavatar.png
So, prof, how do I get some gunpowder?

savage0137.png

seavatar.png
That's what I just said! Is you deaf?!

savage0138.png
savage0139.png

Come one! That can't be the actual recipe for gunpowder!

Wikipedia said:
Gunpowder, also called black powder, is a mixture of sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate.

Who says video games don't teach you anything!

seavatar.png
Alright, where do I find charcoal?

savage0140.png

This seems realistic.

seavatar.png
What about potassium nitrate?

savage0141.png

This is true as well. Either fortunately or unfortunately (depending on your perspective), it cannot be harvested from guano (i.e. bird and bat shit) in this game. I guess that would be too gross for Origin.

seavatar.png
What about sulphur?

savage0142.png

seavatar.png
Where might I find a suitable wire screen?

savage0143.png

Fortunately, I picked that up as well.

seavatar.png
While I love to blow things up, it would be nice to have some more guns as well.

savage0144.png

seavatar.png
Uh . . . yeah.

savage0146.png

seavatar.png
Alright then. It is time to make some bombs!

savage0343.png

Tar pits can be found south of the Kurak tribe. I scoop some tar into the metal bucket.

savage0346.png

I pour some tar on a few strips of cloth.

It is now time to make some more gun powder.

savage0150.png

First, I grab a few branches off trees.

I now need to find a cave with some crystalline deposits of potassium nitrate.

savage0347.png

There is a suitable cave on the northern cliff wall near the dinosaur graveyard (i.e. the place on the map littered with bones).

Inside the cave is a weird man.

savage0348.png
savage0349.png
savage0350.png

seavatar.png
Who are you?

savage0352.png

seavatar.png
My name is Elzair.

savage0353.png

seavatar.png
So what do you do?

savage0354.png

seavatar.png
Okay, I'll be going now . . .

savage0355.png
savage0356.png

It looks like this is another insertion of Denis Loubet, one of the senior artist's of many Ultima games. Alright, back to the bombs!

savage0358.png
savage0359.png

While I am here, I burn a few branches to get some charcoal. Now let's get some potassium nitrate.

savage0361.png
savage0362.png

I end up gathering forty units of charcoal and potassium nitrate each. I now only need some sulphur.

savage0365.png

I find some sulphur pits due north of the Jukari village.

savage0366.png

I just use the wire screen to filter some sulphur out of the spring water.

savage0367.png

I can now make forty units of gunpowder.

savage0368.png

I drop my mortar on the ground and move all my sulphur, charcoal and potassium nitrate into it.

savage0369.png

I then mix them all together into gunpowder.

savage0370.png

Success!

It is now time to make the grenades themselves.

savage0381.png

I find a digging stick in a Disquiqui hut.

savage0382.png

I can use it to dig clay from river banks.

savage0383.png

I can then shape the clay into a soft pot.

savage0395.png
savage0396.png

I can then use a kiln, such as the one in the Kurak or Barrab village, to harden the pot.

savage0384.png
savage0385.png

Holy shit! Lava works as well!

savage1241.png

Flax can be harvested from the yucca plant.

savage1242.png
savage1244.png

I can then use a loom to spin it into cloth.

savage0390.png
savage0391.png

I can use scissors or my knife to cut the cloth into cloth strips.

savage0392.png
savage0393.png

I can then dunk my strips into my bucket of tar.

savage0400.png

I now use a tarred strip of cloth on a fired clay pot.

savage0402.png
savage0403.png

Success!

seavatar.png
I want to blow someone up!

Okay!

savage0409.png
savage0410.png
savage0411.png

seavatar.png

It is now time to make some homemade firearms! First, I need to head back to the lab.

savage0442.png

I did not notice these before. They can produce a brief flash of light.

savage0444.png

Here are some oddly colored jars.

savage0445.png
savage0446.png
savage0447.png

Sweet!

seavatar.png
So, prof, now that we're in your lab, can you make me some rifles out of these bamboo sticks we found?

savage0450.png

seavatar.png
Yes.

savage0451.png

seavatar.png
Yup.

savage0452.png
savage0453.png
savage0454.png
savage0455.png
savage0457.png
savage0458.png
savage0460.png

seavatar.png
Nice!

savage0462.png

I now give one rifle each to Jimmy and Rafkin.

savage0463.png

Unfortunately, savages cannot use modern weapons.

Now that I have the grenades, I want to use them. I now teleport to the Barako village. It dumps me in a really run-down part of the village. The people are to the west.

savage0466.png

However, there is a fishing pole here.

savage0467.png

Catching fish can be an easy way to get food.

savage0472.png

seavatar.png
So, sweetness, how about joining my little army against the Myrmidex? I promise I will be a hard drill instructor.

savage0473.png
savage0474.png

Okay. I head north of the village to the northern cliffs.

savage0479.png

The entrance to the cave is to the east.

savage0480.png

Uh oh! It is blocked by a waterfall!

seavatar.png
I need to find some way to dam that fall.

savage0481.png

seavatar.png
I bet that rock will do the trick.

savage0482.png
savage0484.png
savage0487.png

seavatar.png
Yes!

I work my way through the cave.

savage0615.png

I stock up on some more potassium nitrate here.

savage0488.png

Here is the gorilla that took the hot-one's young slut. I put him down like a rabid dog.

savage0489.png

Halisa is on a ledge.

savage0490.png
savage0491.png

seavatar.png
Arrrghh!

savage0494.png

As expected the little bitch beats me.

savage0498.png

seavatar.png
Alright, will you 'join' with me now? Is there any kind of ritual for these things; especially one involving sex?

savage0499.png
savage0500.png

This was a really cool idea for a game setting, and really serves to underline how cliche the standard fantasy setting has gotten over the years. I mean, hell, the next game takes place on steampunk-Mars.

Also, holy crap, you've played through like seven games now. You are nothing short of a beast.

Roland was a type of sound card I think. I had this game and it was pretty fun. I never played Martian Dreams so I am looking forward to that LP. This is the most epic LP of all time. Good work.

It's a shame that we get so many generic and derivative settings nowadays. This LP shows that the Ultima series has lots of great moments. The end of Ultima VI and the radically different settings of Savage Empire and Martian Dreams are just a few. This LP reminds me of the greatness of these games.

Every time an ultima game gets mentioned I remind myself it would be futile to try it because the weird slanted point of view makes me nauseous. :(

Savage Empire Part 3: Prehysteria

Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire

Part 3: Prehysteria

Alright, it is now time to add some more tribes to my 'alliance.'

savage0314.png
savage0315.png
savage0316.png

I head to the teleport hub and take the bottom teleporter on the left side. I then head south to the river bank, a little ways east, and north to get up to the mesa where the Barrab reside. On the way I encounter this fellow.

savage0318.png

seavatar.png
No way!

savage0319.png

seavatar.png
Who are the Haakur?

savage0320.png

seavatar.png
Whatever. Do you have a name?

savage0321.png

seavatar.png
So what do you do?

savage0322.png

seavatar.png
'Kay. Can you help me convince the Barrab to join an alliance against the Myrmidex?

savage0324.png
savage0325.png

seavatar.png
So I need to talk to Balakai?

savage0326.png
savage0328.png
savage0329.png

seavatar.png
Later!

savage0331.png

The village is at the top of the mesa, and the chieftain's hut is to the north of the other houses.

savage0332.png

seavatar.png
What does he have?

savage0333.png

seavatar.png
What kind of medicine do you need?

savage0334.png

seavatar.png
'Kay. How about joining an alliance against the Myrmidex?

savage0336.png

seavatar.png
Yes.

savage0337.png

seavatar.png
Alright. You said you needed the roots of an orchid?

savage0335.png

seavatar.png
Alright. I will do it.

I head back to the teleporter pad and head north to the Great Mesa.

savage0412.png

It looks like one part of the mesa is separated from the other.

seavatar.png
I know how to get across.

savage0413.png
savage0414.png

seavatar.png
Tiiiiiimmmmmmmmmbbeeeeeeeeeerrrr!!!!

savage0416.png

I head across the new bridge and proceed in a mostly northwestly direction.

savage0421.png

seavatar.png
Is this the plant he was talking about?! Holy Shit!

I stay back and proceed to cut off its branches with my arrows and bullets.

savage0422.png

Eventually, it is down to its last branch.

savage0423.png

When I kill the final branch, it dies.

savage0424.png

I collect the orchid bulb and head back to Balachai. It gets dark before I get there, so I take a well-earned rest.

savage0425.png
savage0427.png

This is the level-up mechanic. Following the bear increases a character's strength; following the jaguar increases dexterity, and following the monkey increases intelligence.

Jimmy follows the bear. When I wake up, I head back to Balachai.

savage0429.png
savage0430.png

seavatar.png
Yes.

savage0432.png
savage0434.png

savage0435.png

savage0436.png
savage0437.png

seavatar.png
Cool How's about pledging allegiance to me now?

savage0441.png

Sweet!

seavatar.png
I want some god-damn poontang!

Alright, it will try to find the savage bitch. I travel back to the Barako tribe and head west to the river.

savage0502.png

Ooops! I need some paddles. Fortunately, there are some nearby.

savage0503.png

I finally have enough people to paddle the raft.

savage0506.png

I paddle northwest to a small island. Crazy Topuru lives here.

savage0507.png
savage0508.png

seavatar.png
Are you Topuru?

savage0509.png

seavatar.png
Oh, fuck this! What the hell are you doing here?!

savage0510.png

seavatar.png
Tell me where the Urali are!

savage0511.png

seavatar.png
Tell me where they are hidden!

savage0514.png
savage0515.png

seavatar.png
Have you lost your mind?!

savage0516.png

seavatar.png
facepalm.gif

savage0517.png
savage0518.png

seavatar.png
Not really.

savage0520.png
savage0521.png
savage0522.png
savage0523.png

Shit! Well, I head back to the mountain of mongoloids and speak to Balakai.

savage0524.png

seavatar.png
I guess.

savage0525.png
savage0526.png
savage0527.png
savage0528.png
savage0529.png
savage0531.png
savage0533.png

Alright, I head for the teleport pad and take the top on on the left side.

savage0534.png

It looks like the Sahree are cave-dwellers as well.

savage0536.png

The chief lizard's idea of relaxation is lounging on a rug.

savage0537.png

seavatar.png
Who are you?

savage0538.png

seavatar.png
Are you the chief?

savage0541.png

seavatar.png
Where can I find some blue stones?

savage0553.png

seavatar.png
So you are the Sakhra?

savage0542.png

seavatar.png
Who were the Kotl?

savage0543.png

seavatar.png
OOOOO! I like power! Tell me more about it!

savage0544.png
savage0546.png
savage0547.png
savage0548.png

seavatar.png
So, your civilization was destroyed by the Myrmidexx?

savage0550.png

seavatar.png
So, if you hate the Myrmidex so much, how about you join my alliance to defeat them?

savage0554.png
savage0555.png
savage0556.png
savage0557.png
savage0558.png
savage0559.png
savage0560.png

seavatar.png
No, I do not.

savage0561.png
savage0563.png
savage0565.png

seavatar.png
Tell me about this Thunderer.

savage0551.png

I will go there shortly, but first let's find a blue stone fragment.

savage0567.png

Here is the stone.

savage0570.png
savage0571.png

I use the small hammer from Professor Rafkin's lab to remove a fragment of the blue stone. Outside the cave I run into this lizard.

savage0575.png

seavatar.png
Who are you?

savage0576.png

seavatar.png
What do you do?

savage0577.png

seavatar.png
Well, you know what they say: those who can't, teach.

savage0578.png

seavatar.png
So, you're like a tourguide, eh? Gimme the tour.

savage0579.png

seavatar.png
Tell me about the medicine.

savage0580.png

seavatar.png
Tell me about the mesas.

savage0581.png

seavatar.png
Bored now. Tell me a story.

savage0582.png

seavatar.png
I wanna hear about the city.

savage0583.png

seavatar.png
Bored now. Later!

savage0584.png

I then head to the teleport pad and head northeast around the northern cliff.

savage0574.png

Here is a hole to the Myrmidexx caves. I will not go down there yet because the place is swarming with them.

savage0585.png

seavatar.png
Hmm. I think we are getting close.

savage0588.png

seavatar.png
Yep!

seavatar.png
It looks like I will have to resort to trickery to take this one down.

savage0589.png
savage0594.png
savage0596.png

seavatar.png
It is a boulder made of gold!

I head back to the Sakhra.

savage0597.png

seavatar.png
Cool! Will you join my alliance now?

savage0598.png

I now notice Jimmy is missing from the party roster. I assume he was killed somehow, so I head back to find his body.

savage0607.png

Instead, I just see him standing near the dead T-Rex. If I ask him to join, he tells me he is already in my party, and if I ask him to leave, he refuses.

seavatar.png
:rage:

savage0608.png

I end up killing him in the hopes that I can get Intanya to resurrect him.

savage0609.png

Then Rafkin suddenly leaves the party.

seavatar.png
WTF?!

This is a god-awful bug! I end up having to restart the game and do everything over again. This time I end up not going anywhere near this quest until the very end of the game.

That is all for now!

Wow, what a fucked-up bug. Props for restarting and not just giving up, as I probably would've done.

Ah, the time before games had multiple save slots.
