I have been too busy with school and actually playing the damn game. Now all I need to do is assemble the three-part-key and make it through the Stygian Abyss. I have the full party decked out with Magic Wands, Magic Bows, and Mystic Swords (for Geoffrey and Katrina). I have them all wearing Mystic Robes; is that the best armor in the game? Except for my level 8 mage, all party members are between levels 3 and 6. I have 99 Cure and Heal spells, 80 Fireballs, 50 Tremors, 30 Dispels, 10 Gems, 15 Keys and all the required items. Am I ready for the abyss?

Ultima IV Part 5: I Ascend in Sacrifice

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar

Part 5: I Ascend in Sacrifice

I apologize for the lack of updates. I have spent my time doing schoolwork and playing the game. Now I am (with hope) near the end, and I need to plow through ~400 more screenshots. This update will be a bit longer than usual.

I now take the Britain moongate and wind up in the eastern half of the major continent.

ultimaiv261.png

ultimaiv262.png

This is Minoc, the city of Sacrifice and the home of tinkers, who make things.

ultimaiv264.png

This guy is just the welcomer.

ultimaiv268.png

This guy apparently carves the runes that are necessary to enter the shrines. Apparently, this means the runes might not be unique. However, this contradicts all later Ultimas and does not explain why I only find one of each.

ultimaiv269.png

I speak to his sister in the southwest part of town.

ultimaiv265.png

avatar.gif
Rune.

ultimaiv266.png

ultimaiv267.png

I speak to Merida

avatar.gif
Name.

Merida: Merida.

avatar.gif
Job.

Merida: I seek the wisdom of the shrine of sacrifice.

avatar.gif
Shrine.

Merida: But first I need the mantra! Know ye the mantra?

avatar.gif
No.

Merida: The shrine is on a lake to the east!

avatar.gif
Mantra.

ultimaiv270.png

ultimaiv271.png

I then find the hidden shepherd, Damon.

avatar.gif
Job.

Damon: I stand here and think.

avatar.gif
Think.

Damon: Oh, just about things.

avatar.gif
Mantra.

ultimaiv272.png

ultimaiv273.png

Here I meet Julia, the tinker She will be another party member when the time comes.

ultimaiv274.png

This is Zircon. I ask him about Mystic Weapons and Armor.

avatar.gif
Mystics.

ultimaiv275.png

Those two are in Paws.

I then speak to the bard, Singsong.

ultimaiv276.png

avatar.gif
Job.

Singsong: I sing songs.

avatar.gif
Songs.

ultimaiv277.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

Singsong: Thanks.

I now make my way into Zircon's forge. The fire damages me a bit.

ultimaiv278.png

Haha! The rune is mine! I now make my way to the shores of Minoc. There I see a pirate ship.

ultimaiv279.png

Fortunately, there is only one pirate aboard. I make quick work of him.

ultimaiv280.png

The ship is now mine. Now I can sail the seas of Britannia at my leisure. I then head back to Moonglow for some reagents. The best way to raise Honor, Justice and Honesty is to buy stuff from the reagent ladies. Since they are blind, they cannot count money, and I can give them as much or as little as I like. However, cheating them lowers those three virtues. Since each transaction, no matter the amount, raises these virtues the same, I buy my reagents one at a time. I also gain honor by finding quest artifacts.

ultimaiv283.png

Well, well, well. Here is the ruined city of Magincia.

ultimaiv284.png

avatar.gif
Job.

Virtuebane: I welcome thee to Magincia! Proud city of the high seas!

avatar.gif
Magincia.

Virtuebane: Magincia fell unto the realm of darkness for the foundation of their virtue was ill-placed in pride! Art thou proud?

avatar.gif
No.

Virtuebane: Ah.

I then talk to some skeletons of the former inhabitants of Magincia.

ultimaiv286.png

ultimaiv287.png

ultimaiv288.png

I then meet Demitry.

avatar.gif
Job.

Demitry: I rattle my bones.

avatar.gif
Bones.

Demitry: Bones, them bones, them dry bones...

ultimaiv285.png

Nate is a snake that will attack me. For some reason, he is declared a non-evil creature, so I should not kill him.

ultimaiv289.png

He is talking about Empath Abbey.

I then talk to Splot.

avatar.gif
Job.

Splot: I regret.

avatar.gif
Regret.

Splot: I was proud, strip thyself of conceits, only the humble are pure!

avatar.gif
Humble.

Splot: The root from which all virtues grow! Dost thou seek purity?

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv290.png

I guess he means Nate.

ultimaiv291.png

avatar.gif
Name.

Nate: I am Nate the snake.

avatar.gif
Job.

ultimaiv292.png

avatar.gif
Rune.

ultimaiv293.png

avatar.gif
Stone.

ultimaiv294.png

He then attacks me. I wound him a little, and he flees.

ultimaiv295.png

ultimaiv296.png

Since humility is the opposite of pride, the mantra of humility is LUM.

ultimaiv297.png

Due south of Magincia is a little patch of water. I search the waters and find the Bell of Courage. I decided to include this because it is just so obvious that something is here.

I then head for Jhelom.

I find Aesop hiding in the northeast corner of town.

avatar.gif
Name.

Aesop: I am Aesop.

avatar.gif
Job.

Aesop: I search for valor!

avatar.gif
Valor.

Aesop: I find that 'tis easy to be brave from a safe distance! Know what I mean?

avatar.gif
Yes.

Aesop That's my problem.

avatar.gif
Mantra.

ultimaiv301.png

Here is another mantra, but I still need the Rune of Valor. I will have to come back for that later.

I then decide to ask about sextants in the pub in Jhelom.

ultimaiv302.png

First I order a tanker of ale. If I pay more than he asks for, he will let me ask him about something.

ultimaiv303.png

After a 50 gold bribe, he spills the beans.

ultimaiv304.png

Here is another whirlpool. Do you remember that the whirlpool transported me to Ambrosia in the last game? I wonder if this one will transport somewhere new?

ultimaiv305.png

It looks like it! I have been transported into Loch Lake.

ultimaiv306.png

Southeast is a hidden village. There are only two ways to get here (that are worth a damn): sailing a ship into a whirlpool or casting the spell Blink.

ultimaiv307.png

This is Cove, the village of Love.

South is a circle of hippies that will give me some much needed hints on the eight virtues.

ultimaiv308.png

avatar.gif
Codex.

Spellbind: One must know the combination of the three principles of virtue!

avatar.gif
Combination.

Spellbind: The combination of the three principles of virtue equals the measure of time and space!

I then speak to Shaman.

avatar.gif
Job.

Shaman: I study the 'one' thing that is the secret to the codex!

avatar.gif
Study.

Shaman: I study of the codex!

avatar.gif
Codex.

Shaman: The one pure axiom is more endless than the changing tides, more
eternal than day and night!

I then speak to Charm.

avatar.gif
Job.

Charm: I ponder the key to the axiom.

avatar.gif
Axiom.

Charm: The 1 pure axiom encompasses all things. Know ye what they are?

avatar.gif
No.

Charm: The truths of the universe, the love of the heart, and the
courage of the soul!

I then speak to Circe.

avatar.gif
Job.

Circe: I teach of the axiom!

avatar.gif
Axiom.

ultimaiv309.png

avatar.gif
Parts.

ultimaiv310.png

I get the feeling they are talking about Infinity.

I then speak to Mentorian about the Gate spell.

ultimaiv311.png

ultimaiv312.png

What the hell is a talking seahorse doing here?!

ultimaiv313.png

There is another talking ankh? 'Kay!

ultimaiv314.png

Don't fucking tell me this is supposed to be Paul McCartney.

avatar.gif
Job.

Paul: I play of love.

It looks like it!

avatar.gif
Love.

ultimaiv315.png

avatar.gif
Problems.

Paul: But all in all we soon discover that one and one is all we long to hear! Wilt thou listen?

avatar.gif
Yes.

Paul: About love.

I then talk to the ankh.

ultimaiv318.png

avatar.gif
Codex.

Ankh: To enter the codex chamber.

avatar.gif
Chamber.

ultimaiv319.png

I then head back to LB's castle.

ultimaiv320.png

ultimaiv321.png

ultimaiv322.png

Fuck yeah! Five down; three to go!

I now head to the Shrine of Sacrifice. Since I have the rune, I may enter.

ultimaiv325.png

I meditate for three cycles.

ultimaiv326.png

Each time I have to recite the correct mantra: CAH.

ultimaiv327.png

Yay!

ultimaiv329.png

Huh? I think this is the Runic character for "N".

Anyway, I head to the other side of the main continent.

ultimaiv330.png

Here is another secluded village.

ultimaiv331.png

This is Vesper. It does not serve a virtue. It will disappear before the next game and reappear in Ultima VII. There are not that many interesting NPCs here.

I speak to the kid, Flatbush.

avatar.gif
Job.

Flatbush: I am an apprentice mage!

avatar.gif
Mage.

Flatbush: I am the Calumny's favorite!

avatar.gif
Calumny.

Flatbush: He lives in Yew! Hast thou been to Yew?

avatar.gif
No.

ultimaiv332.png

I then talk to Simple, a sheperdess.

avatar.gif
Job.

Simple: I seek the shrine.

avatar.gif
Shrine.

Simple: The shrine of humility!

avatar.gif
Humility.

ultimaiv333.png

avatar.gif
No.

Simple: Southeast of Britannia!

I then speak to Dyka

avatar.gif
Job.

Dyka: I am a thief, I like to borrow!

avatar.gif
Borrow.

Dyka: My favorite things to borrow are horses!

ultimaiv334.png

avatar.gif
No.

Dyka: Likely, thou art a wimp!

avatar.gif
Bitch, I should kill you for that, but I ain't gonna.

ultimaiv335.png

This is the Guild shop. Like in the last game, they sell torches (for seeing in dungeons), gems (for viewing mini-maps), and keys (for unlocking locked doors). I ask for option D.

ultimaiv336.png

Yowza! I need to get more money before I can afford that! Instead I purchase twelve keys.

ultimaiv337.png

I then head for the Shrine of Compassion near Loch Lake. The monster above is a Headless BTW.

ultimaiv339.png

Once again I meditate for three cycles.

ultimaiv340.png

Shit! It looks like my compassion is not high enough. Well, at least it gives me a hint.

ultimaiv341.png

I then head for Buccaneer's Den. This is the hangout of pirates in Britannia.

ultimaiv342.png

I ask in the pub about the skull.

ultimaiv343.png

He is probably in Minoc.

ultimaiv344.png

I then head due south and find a keep on a big island.

ultimaiv345.png

This is Serpent's Hold, the keep of Courage.

ultimaiv346.png

facepalm.gif

avatar.gif
Quest.

Durham: I feel that when on a quest my life has purpose! Art thou on a quest?

avatar.gif
Yes.

Durham: Then thy life has meaning!

avatar.gif
Dungeon.

Durham: The altar room of courage gives the third part of a key.

This is another hint.

ultimaiv347.png

I then speak to Shyra, the instructor.

ultimaiv348.png

ultimaiv350.png

This is Sentri, the lord of Serpent's Hold. He will be a companion in later games. He cannot help me now, so I will come back later.

ultimaiv351.png

Since he is a sailor, I ask him about the wheel of the HMS Cape.

ultimaiv352.png

Cool! That cape is south of Trinsic.

ultimaiv354.png

Oh yeah!

ultimaiv355.png

Basically, using the wheel will increase my ship HP from 50 to 99. In this game, ships can take damage from cyclones and the ranged attacks of certain creatures. If it reaches zero, the ship sinks, and everyone onboard dies.

ultimaiv357.png

I use a fireball (sulfurous ash + black pearl) on some orcs.

ultimaiv359.png

Fuck yeah! Two more levels to go!

I think I will save the rest for later.

BTW, can anyone find a better Ultima logo for the first page? I would prefer an image of similar size that is not related to Ultima: Online.

Cute, but it is not large enough. Plus, I was hoping to find something related to the single-player Ultima.

Ultima IV Part 6: I Have No Honor Like a Woman

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar

Part 6: I Have No Honor Like a Woman

In this update, I will ascend in a few virtues, recruit my first party member and find the last of the runes, the Book of Truth, and the Candle of Love.

Since I am in LB's palace, I might as well wander around a bit more.

I make my way to the second level.

ultimaiv367.png

Since I now have some keys, I can jimmy the lock.

ultimaiv368.png

Yeah, the knob just changes a bit.

ultimaiv369.png

Here is a secret wall that leads into the prison cells. In here I meet a reaper.

ultimaiv370.png

ultimaiv371.png

ultimaiv372.png

ultimaiv373.png

As you might have guessed, he is just referring to the skull of Mondain.

In the southwest corner, I run into this guy.

ultimaiv374.png

avatar.gif
Job.

Zorin: I am here to help thee.

avatar.gif
Help.

ultimaiv375.png

avatar.gif
Castles.

ultimaiv376.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv377.png

I will head that way then.

ultimaiv378.png

Here is a picture of me casting a fireball at a sea monster.

ultimaiv379.png

I make my way to the Lycaeum.

ultimaiv380.png

Since I am here, I might as well talk to the jester.

avatar.gif
Job.

Zajac: To entertain!

avatar.gif
Health.

ultimaiv381.png

This is one of the 2-4 times in this game where asking about an NPC's health actually yields valuable information.

avatar.gif
Unhappy.

ultimaiv382.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv383.png

I need to ask Chuckles, LB's favorite jester, for a clue? Gotcha!

I then ask Father Antos about the Book of Truth.

ultimaiv384.png

He must be talking about a library. I wonder where I can find one of those . . .

ultimaiv385.png

Oooh, what is in here?

ultimaiv386.png

avatar.gif
Job.

ultimaiv387.png

avatar.gif
Library.

ultimaiv388.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

Lord Terrence: Which book?

avatar.gif
The Book of Truth.

ultimaiv389.png

Swwweeeeeeeeeeeeet!

ultimaiv391.png

Yeah, I know it is filed under R. That is a bit weird. Anyway, two down; one to go!

I then return to LB's castle and ask Chuckles about a clue.

ultimaiv392.png

Huh?! I think there is a well in the northeastern part of the first floor.

ultimaiv360.png

I wonder if she is trying to tell me something ...

ultimaiv361.png

Holy shit! Okay, I have talked to plenty of weird NPCs in my time, but talking water takes the cake!

avatar.gif
Job.

ultimaiv362.png

avatar.gif
Secret.

ultimaiv363.png

avatar.gif
Altar.

ultimaiv365.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv366.png

So I need to find some stones in the dungeons (and beyond) and assemble them into a key that I will need for some purpose? Gotcha!

I now head for the Shrine of Honor, which is located west of the Cape of Heroes.

ultimaiv393.png

ultimaiv394.png

The correct mantra is SUMM.

ultimaiv395.png

ultimaiv396.png

This is the runic symbol for "I".

ultimaiv397.png

I now sail around the western edge of the main continent and find a new city on a nearby island.

ultimaiv398.png

This is the city of Skara Brae, which is named after a neolithic settlement in Scotland. It is also, apparently, the setting for the Bard's Tale series of video games. In this game, it is the city of Spirituality and the home of the rangers (i.e. hippies).

ultimaiv399.png

avatar.gif
Name.

Shamino: I am Shamino.

avatar.gif
Job.

ultimaiv400.png

This hippy will join my party eventually.

ultimaiv403.png

Goddamnit, Garriott! Stop putting historical/non-canonical characters into your fucking games!

ultimaiv404.png

avatar.gif
Job.

Ambule: I beg for but a single gold piece! Wilt thou please give me a gold piece?

avatar.gif
Yes.

Ambule: Dear kind soul.

avatar.gif
Mantra.

Ambule: Ask the child named Barren.

ultimaiv405.png

This info is certainly worth a coin or two.

ultimaiv406.png

avatar.gif
Spells.

ultimaiv407.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

Presto: What?

avatar.gif
Nightshade.

ultimaiv408.png

ultimaiv409.png

avatar.gif
Journal.

Mitre: It tells of the White Stone.

avatar.gif
Stone.

ultimaiv411.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv412.png

I find the child Barren in the northeast corner of town.

ultimaiv413.png

ultimaiv414.png

facepalm.gif

avatar.gif
Job.

Buddha: I teach.

avatar.gif
Teach.

ultimaiv415.png

avatar.gif
Noble.

ultimaiv416.png

I now talk with Romasco.

avatar.gif
Job.

Romasco: I am a teacher, I enrich young minds.

avatar.gif
Teach.

ultimaiv417.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv418.png

avatar.gif
Word.

ultimaiv419.png

Do I remember seeing an ankh near the entrance? I think I do. Since every other ankh in the game is chatty, let's see if this one is as well.

ultimaiv420.png

Yup!

avatar.gif
Job.

ultimaiv421.png

avatar.gif
Rune.

Ankh: Mantra?

avatar.gif
OM.

ultimaiv423.png

avatar.gif
No.

ultimaiv424.png

The Minoc moongate is the one that opens on twin full moons.

I now head for Empath Abbey to dig up info on the Candle of Love.

ultimaiv425.png

ultimaiv426.png

ultimaiv427.png

ultimaiv428.png

ultimaiv429.png

ultimaiv430.png

Since this place is locked, it might be where I need to go.

ultimaiv432.png

Nope! Just a bunch of hippies!

ultimaiv434.png

Here is a secret passage.

ultimaiv435.png

It just leads to a roomful of chests I cannot loot because it would be wrong! However, it looks like the northwest block is also a hidden door.

ultimaiv436.png

It leads outside the keep.

ultimaiv437.png

This must be the bard the ankh was referring to.

avatar.gif
Name.

Derek: I am Derek the Bard.

avatar.gif
Job.

ultimaiv438.png

avatar.gif
Candle.

ultimaiv439.png

The only place on Lock Lake is the village of Cove.

ultimaiv440.png

Since I am in the vicinity, I head for the Shrine of Justice on one of the northern tips of Britannia.

ultimaiv441.png

Hot damn! Three down; five to go!

ultimaiv443.png

Here is another runic symbol for "I".

ultimaiv445.png

I now take the Minoc moongate when both Trammel and Felucca are full.

ultimaiv446.png

This is the Shrine of Spirituality. I meditate for three cycles and recite the correct mantra, OM, each time.

ultimaiv447.png

It looks like I am not yet spiritual enough to ascend.

ultimaiv448.png

So the white stone is in the Serpent Spine mountains? How am I supposed to get inside there?! I then head for Paws to find Zair the Wise.

ultimaiv450.png

avatar.gif
Word.

ultimaiv451.png

I need to ask the lords of the three keeps (Lycaeum, Empath Abbey and Serpent's Hold) for the three parts of the word of passage.

I now head for Cove to find the Candle of Love.

ultimaiv452.png

I did not notice this secret passage before.

ultimaiv453.png

This is well hidden candle! I now have all three of the items needed to enter the abyss.

ultimaiv456.png

This is an Ettin, a two-headed, giant caveman guy. He throws stones for a ranged attack. He is not too tough, though.

I then head for the Tap in Trinsic to find out more about the white stone.

ultimaiv457.png

ultimaiv458.png

ultimaiv459.png

Arrrggghh! I head for Cove again. Fortunately, reaching it is not as much of a hassle as the first time because I can just park my ship on the western shores and get it when I need it. Extra ships spawn much more frequently than in the last game, thank God!

ultimaiv460.png

avatar.gif
Stone.

ultimaiv461.png

ultimaiv462.png

Holy shit! How long does this quest sequence go?!

I head to Skara Brae.

ultimaiv464.png

Since I am running low on food, I stock up.

ultimaiv465.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv466.png

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv467.png

avatar.gif
Wonderful!

ultimaiv468.png

FUCK! He did not show! I guess I need to try several more times.

ultimaiv469.png

Sometimes, I will be attacked when I stay at an inn. The battles are pretty easy, though. Since I am a mage, Heal spells and camping out keep me from having to stay at an inn most of the time.

ultimaiv470.png

Finally!

ultimaiv471.png

avatar.gif
Stone.

ultimaiv472.png

Okay, so I will need to find a way to float in the clouds.

I then remember that I need to ask a lady in waiting in Empath Abbey about the Silver Horn, so I go there.

I speak to Suzanna.

avatar.gif
Job.

Suzanna: I am a lady in waiting.

avatar.gif
Horn.

ultimaiv473.png

It turns out that Malchor is in Empath Abbey as well.

ultimaiv474.png

avatar.gif
Job.

Malchor: I solve quests.

avatar.gif
Quests.

Malchor: My last quest took me near Spiritwood. Art thou on a quest?

avatar.gif
Yes.

Malchor: Best of luck to thee!

avatar.gif
Horn.

ultimaiv475.png

Since I know where that is, I go there.

ultimaiv476.png

Hot damn!

Since I now have some keys and a few Dispels, I head for Jhelom to find the last of the runes.

ultimaiv478.png

ultimaiv479.png

avatar.gif
Job.

Robert: I battle for Lord British!

avatar.gif
Battle.

Robert: Battles are few and too many! Art thou a valiant warrior?

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv480.png

Since I already know where it is, I won't bother.

ultimaiv481.png

Here is another guy in a locked room.

ultimaiv482.png

This is Geoffrey, the warrior. He is one of my companions.

ultimaiv483.png

Since I am sick of fighting alone, I decide to take him along.

ultimaiv485.png

Here is another secret passage.

ultimaiv486.png

I dispel this barrier and talk to the mage Senora.

avatar.gif
Job.

Senora: I am locked up in this tower.

avatar.gif
Tower.

Senora: I am being punished for my crimes.

avatar.gif
Crimes.

Senora: Does not matter, I can help thee! Dost thou have a ship?

avatar.gif
Yes.

ultimaiv489.png

I then dispel the two barriers to the east.

ultimaiv490.png

In the southeastern corner of the town, I find the rune.

ultimaiv491.png

As you can see, I now have all eight runes.

ultimaiv492.png

I now head for the Shrine of Humility on the northern part of the Isle of the Avatar.

ultimaiv493.png

If I do not use the horn, I will have to fight my way through many daemons.

ultimaiv496.png

I use the horn instead. Now I can make my way to the shrine unmolested.

ultimaiv497.png

I meditate for three cycles and chant the correct mantra, LUM, the opposite of the mantra of pride.

ultimaiv497.png

Oh yeah!

ultimaiv499.png

This is the runic symbol for "Y".

I think that about wraps it up for one night.

Well, you gotta be a special kind of crazy to put yourself in your own games...twice, as two different characters.

BUMP!
