Lenin's dream can also be solved by burning ALL the money. He will them congratulate you on the creative solution to the problem.

I admire your will to lp so many games, will you be strong enough to treat with the first signs of EA's Decline, aka Ultima 9 (I read a lp on the lparchive, and by God that looks godfucking-awful)...

Some would say the decline began with Serpent Isle. Personally I would judge Ultima 9 to be one of those games (along with the likes of Deus Ex: Invisible War and Fallout 3) that are not all that bad in themselves, but when you compare them to brilliant previous entries in the same series it goes straight to ohmygodwhathavetheydone.

Lol, sorry but no, Ultima 9 is SO buggy (complete with instant-game-breaking bugs that may even harm your computer besides corrupting save files), that it makes Oblivion look like a "solid" game.
Also, the game was so rushed it can be perceived everywhere: for example, there are many quests that are unsolvable unless you try everything/had a guide 'cause it was never finished the quest on question (for example, in one occasion you need a password that no-one tells you about adn it could be found only on a random piece of paper somewhere on an island, easily missed), and the original story was better (the new one is a shit, retconning the ENTIRE saga with the Guardian's "secret" bullshit).

Damn, I should've remembered that the version I played was fan-patched to hell and back with completely new dialogue.

...He doesn't look like a Tiffany.

Looks more like a Louis to me.

I think he is Charles Lewis Tiffany; he founded Tiffany & Co., an American maker of jewelry and silverware.

I mixed him up with his son. No wonder that the pictures I found looked nothing like the one in game, not to mention he wouldn't be so old at the time.

Martian Dreams Part 5: Total Recall

Ultima Worlds of Adventure: Martian Dreams

Part 5: Total Recall

After the attempt to grow a new Martian body did not work out so well, it is time for Plan B.

I pick up Prektesh's body and head to Elysium.

martian1159.png

martian1160.png

mdtekapeshlowell.png
You have, however, proven your dedication to our cause.

martian1161.png

mdavatar.png
Wait! I want to try another transfer!

martian1163.png

mdtekapeshlowell.png
Kaxishek was an odd one, alright. But who can tell? Perhaps he succeeded.

mdavatar.png
I have a better alternative.

martian1209.png

mdavatar.png
Yes.

martian1212.png

mdtekapeshlowell.png
As soon as you have devised ways to free all of the humans in the Dream World from their nightmares, and they are waiting in the Hall of Dreams for the transfer, I and my plantals will consent to returning the bodies to the humans.

martian1213.png
martian1214.png

mdavatar.png
Okay.

martian1215.png

I sit in the machine and am transported to a new hallway of dreams.

martian1216.png

As usual, each obelisk represents one person to save.

martian1217.png

mdavatar.png
Hmm. Let's try the upper-left one.

martian1218.png

I am attacked by four proto-martians in what looks like a Dream Machine chamber.

martian1219.png

I form the dreamstuff into a saber.

martian1220.png

mdavatar.png
En garde!

martian1221.png

martian1222.png

martian1223.png

martian1224.png

I finally kill all four of them.

martian1225.png

martian1227.png

mdavatar.png
Oh shit!

martian1229.png

mdavatar.png
Did I do that?

martian2092.png

Notice the blood dripping from my saber. That is a nice touch.

martian1230.png

mdavatar.png
Wait a minute! Why are they only carrying dollars? Something smells fishy.

I collect all the money on each body.

martian1231.png

I then head out and up.

martian2093.png

I then arrive at an auction platform.

martian1232.png

mdavatar.png
Who are you?

martian1233.png

I assume this guy is Ike Clanton.

mdavatar.png
What do you do?

martian1234.png

mdavatar.png
I like how you think! So, how's about some horse tradin'?

martian1235.png

mdavatar.png
What do you think of the black one?

martian1237.png

mdavatar.png
What about the brown one?

mdclanton.png
Sound and hale, from nose to tail. Might be a bit tough to handle.

mdavatar.png
How about the gray one?

martian1238.png

mdavatar.png
Alright.

martian1239.png

Since this is a dream, I now talk to all three horses.

martian2094.png

mdavatar.png
What place?

mdsmith.png
Hmm, I think I dreamt of you! You're the . . . the . . . I forgot the word. Must not be important.

mdavatar.png
Who are you?

mdsmith.png
Smith the Horse. As if you didn't know that already! Who did you expect--Mr. Ed?

mdavatar.png
Smith, what are you doing here?

mdsmith.png
I do only two jobs. Number one, I eat hay. And number two, I keep plantigrades like you on your toes.

mdavatar.png
What is a plantigrade?

mdsmith.png
Never mind. It's over your head.

mdavatar.png
:rage:

mdavatar.png
What clue are you giving out this time?

mdsmith.png
Gotta buy me. That's all there is to it, buddy.

For fun, I bid on Smith and win.

mdsmith.png
Don't think I'm grateful for your buying me. And don't expect me to carry you around!

mdavatar.png
Relax. Can you tell me your clue?

mdsmith.png
I suppose we could bargain a bit. Okay, okay. If you're lost in a savage place, there's a great underground hideout I know. Just use the gem in the holder on the great plateau and go three steps southeast of the central transfer pad. You'll find the stairway to . . . Well, the stairway down.

mdsmith.png
If you wish to soar through the skies of Britannia, you must search for a cauldron underground. The Dungeon Covetous and Lord British's basement both have cookpots that will fly. If you take your silk to Charlotte, she'll weave you a web that will take that cauldron out of this world.

mdsmith.png
Now, get us out of here . . .

I reload and talk to the black one.

martian2095.png

It does not say much, so I talk to the gray one.

martian2096.png

mdavatar.png
Who are you?

mdmarshall.png
Everyone always calls me 'Marshall', so that must be my name.

mdavatar.png
What do you do?

mdmarshall.png
I lead the herd, and run off any wolves or coyotes that attack.

mdavatar.png
What herd?

mdmarshall.png
You know, all of my fellows that I'm sworn to protect.

The gray one must be Wyatt Earp, a famous sheriff in the West. He and Ike Clanton were on opposing sides during the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, the most famous shootout in the West.

I now talk to the auctioneer.

martian1242.png

mdavatar.png
Alright.

martian1243.png

mdavatar.png
I will bid on the gray one.

martian1245.png

mdavatar.png
$20.

martian1246.png

martian1247.png

mdavatar.png
Yes.

martian1248.png

martian1249.png

mdavatar.png
Yes.

martian1250.png

martian1251.png

mdavatar.png
Yes.

martian1252.png

martian1254.png

mdavatar.png
Alright! I did it!

martian1255.png

mdavatar.png
Let's tell Earp the good news.

martian1256.png

mdavatar.png
Sure.

mdmarshall.png
I'm free! I can't believe they almost sold me to Ike Clanton.

martian1257.png

martian1258.png

mdavatar.png
One more time!

martian1261.png

I head for the lower-left obelisk.

martian1262.png

I am transported to this room. I speak to the man here.

martian1263.png
martian1265.png

mdavatar.png
Who are you?

martian1266.png

This is Georges Méliès, a French pioneer of cinema. In fact, the image on the obelisk represents a shot from his 1902 film "le Voyage dans la Lune".

220px-Le_Voyage_dans_la_lune.jpg

mdavatar.png
Why can't I move?

martian1268.png

mdavatar.png
What doom? What are you talking about?

martian1269.png

martian1270.png

mdavatar.png
Which ones?

martian1271.png

mdavatar.png
Do not worry. I will handle this.

martian1279.png

I start here. Each step I take on a white square will make the left wall move one square to the right. I must get across the room, grab the dreamstuff, and make it all the way back before the wall crushes me.

martian1280.png

I move one square left. I then move diagonally to the blue square to my northwest.

martian1281.png

I then move north-east

martian1282.png

I run across the two blue squares to my north.

martian1283.png

I move northeast.

martian1284.png

I then grab the dreamstuff and form it into a bottle of oil.

martian1285.png

I then move southwest, run across the two blue tiles again, and move southeast.

martian1286.png

I move east to the blue square.

martian1287.png

I then move southeast one square. Finally I try to move southwest. The wall closes in pushing me to the right and Méliès behind me.

martian1288.png

I use the oil to unjam the door and get out of there.

martian1289.png
martian1290.png

martian1291.png

mdavatar.png
Two down! Two to go!

martian1292.png

I head to the northeast obelisk.

martian1293.png

I start on a river barge with an old man with crazy hair.

mdavatar.png
I wonder who he could be?

martian1294.png

If you do not know who this is, shame on you? Does the name Mark Twain ring any bells?

Fine, for all the Europeans out there, Samuel Clemens is one of the most famous writers in the history of the United States of America. His works include the Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, the Prince and the Pauper, the Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and the War Prayer.

mdavatar.png
What are you doing here?

mdclemens.png
There's no time to talk now--we've got to get the pages!

mdavatar.png
What pages?

martian1296.png
martian1298.png

mdavatar.png
Where is the post box?

martian1299.png

mdavatar.png
How much time do we have?

martian1301.png
martian1302.png
martian1303.png

Alright, we're off!

martian1304.png

martian1305.png

I turn the barge control east.

martian1306.png

martian1307.png

martian1308.png

mdavatar.png
Meh. I need to find something else.

martian1309.png

mdavatar.png
Now we are talking!

martian1310.png

martian1311.png

martian1312.png

martian1313.png

The 'river' is littered with invisible rocks that prevent movement.

martian1314.png

Eating the brown berries will allow me to see them for a limited time.

martian1315.png

martian1316.png

martian1317.png

mdavatar.png
Finally! We have more than 25 pages!

martian1318.png

mdavatar.png
I have over twenty-five pages.

martian1319.png
martian1321.png

mdavatar.png
Where is the post box again?

martian1322.png

martian1323.png

We finally arrive at the post box.

martian1325.png

I drop the manuscript in the slot.

martian1328.png
martian1330.png

martian1331.png

Now, we only have to rescue Percival Lowell himself!

mdlowellsdream.png

This place can be god-awfully confusing, so here is a map that indicates the invisible walkways.

martian1332.png

It is hot here.

mdavatar.png
OWWW!

martian1335.png

It is apparently so hot that I start taking damage.

martian1336.png

However, I have unlimited telekinetic powers.

mdavatar.png
Sweet!

martian1337.png

The winged shoes absorb the heat. I then cross over several platforms.

martian1338.png
martian1339.png
martian1340.png

I pick-up the bow and the mirror and head southwest.

martian1341.png

mdavatar.png
I wonder what this note says.

martian1342.png
martian1343.png

mdavatar.png
Huh?!

I then head to a platform with a metal woman and the body of a Martian. I talk to the metal woman.

martian1344.png

mdavatar.png
Who are you?

martian1345.png

mdavatar.png
What do you do?

mdchsheket.png
It is my destiny to be the salvation of the Martian race.

mdavatar.png
Why do you say you do not exist?

mdchsheket.png
My existence is dependent upon you, my friend.

mdavatar.png
... Okay. Why do you call this place a place of hope?

martian1347.png

mdavatar.png
Why do you say this place is a place of despair?

martian1349.png
martian1350.png

mdavatar.png
Later!

martian1351.png

Apparently, I can throw the Martian corpses into oblivion.

martian1352.png
martian1353.png
martian1354.png

To reach the next platform, I have to move in a really roundabout way.

martian1356.png
martian1357.png

I avoid this thing and run to the west.

martian1358.png

I finally find Percival Lowell. He was the first astronomer to get the bright idea that an observatory should be located in a remote, elevated area for optimal viewing. He also started the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto. He was also notably obsessed with Mars and its 'canals' (that we now know are likely the result of lava flows) assuming they were irrefutable signs of intelligent life. In this game, he was the one who started this crazy expedition.

martian1359.png

mdavatar.png
What are you doing here?

martian1360.png

mdavatar.png
What exactly are you studying?

martian1361.png
martian1362.png

mdavatar.png
Why do you need a hero?

martian1364.png

mdavatar.png
*sigh* Okay.

martian1365.png

Lowell gives me a spyglass. I then head west.

martian1367.png

I hit the canal worm with one of Cupid's arrows, which, of course, charms him. I then can safely pass him.

martian1371.png
martian1372.png
martian1373.png

I use the spyglass that Lowell gave me to find that Pluto lies to the southwest.

martian1368.png

martian1369.png

martian1370.png

martian1375.png

I use trial-and-error to find the proper invisible path that takes me there. This is another really tedious part of the game.

martian1376.png

I finally make it. I then use the hand-mirror to send Lowell a message in Morse code.

martian1378.png

martian1380.png

martian1382.png

martian1383.png

I have now rescued all of the people trapped in the Dream World. It is for Tekapesh to honor his promise.

martian1384.png

mdavatar.png
Yes.

martian1386.png
martian1388.png

martian1389.png

martian1391.png

martian1392.png

martian1393.png

martian1394.png

martian1396.png

martian1398.png

martian1401.png

All the humans have their bodies back now.

martian1402.png

mdavatar.png
I better go see if any of them have anything useful to say.

However, I will save that for next time.

Steampunk usually makes for an awesome setting. I wonder if there's anyone here willing to play Space 1889 for us...

Indeed, too bad it inherited U6 interface, because this is an awesome setting.
What's wrong with the Ultima 6 interface?

I have to admit, I expected something like that. I'll see what I can do. It's been a long time since I played it, and I didn't get very far.

Martian Dreams Part 6: The Waters of Mars

Ultima Worlds of Adventure: Martian Dreams

Part 6: The Waters of Mars

I will now follow-up on the plan to create robotic bodies for the Martians. A Martian named Kaxishek was working on this project in his lab at the North Pole, but no one has heard from him in some time.

martian1164.png

Before I try to find Kaxishek's lab, I travel to Olympus to see if the polar explorer Robert Peary knows anything useful.

mdavatar.png
Bert, in your travels around the North Pole, did you ever find anything that looked like a laboratory?

martian1165.png
martian1166.png
martian1167.png

mdavatar.png
Damn! What about those lens towers you mentioned?

martian1170.png
martian1171.png

mdavatar.png
You think those lenses can melt the ice?

martian1168.png
martian1169.png

mdavatar.png
How has it broken?

martian1172.png
martian1173.png
martian1175.png

mdavatar.png
Alright. How should I repair them?

martian1177.png
martian1178.png

mdavatar.png
Okay. Tell me where they are.

martian1180.png
martian1181.png

I set-out on an expedition to the North Pole.

martian1184.png

I am standing on the entrance to the laboratory; it is still iced-over, though.

martian1186.png
martian1187.png

I head to 55N, 100E and grab the broken motor.

martian1188.png
martian1189.png

I grab the broken lens from the second tower.

martian1190.png

BTW, these oxy-leeches steal oxium, but they are mostly an annoyance.

martian1191.png

I scope-out the third tower covered in vines.

I then head back to Olympus to speak with Edison.

mdavatar.png
Can you repair a broken motor?

martian1200.png

mdavatar.png
Yes.

martian1202.png

martian1203.png

martian1204.png

martian1206.png

I now decide to speak to the human inhabitants of Elysium.

martian1411.png

First, I speak with Percival Lowell.

martian1412.png

mdavatar.png
How much do you know about the lenses at the North Pole.

mdlowell.png
In order for the lens towers to operate, the lenses must not be broken and the lenses must be properly focused to melt the ice.

mdavatar.png
How should they be focused?

mdlowell.png
The lenses on the towers must be focused in order to melt the icecap and fill the cisterns. You must enter the proper alignment coordinates. Controls for such a device normally rely upon entering the approximate time of day.

I then speak with George Washington Carver.

mdavatar.png
Carver, do you know of anything that will kill a bunch of pesky weeds?

martian1413.png

mdavatar.png
How can I destroy them?

martian1414.png

mdavatar.png
Are there any poisons available?

martian1415.png
martian1416.png

mdavatar.png
Cool! Later!

martian1417.png

I now speak with H.G. Wells.

martian1418.png

mdavatar.png
What is your name again?

mdwells.png
Wells, H.G., of course. Actually, that's my pen name. My friends call me Bertie.

mdavatar.png
You are an author, right? Yeah, I have heard of you. 1984 kicked ass and so did Citizen Kane!

mdwells.png
I am an author, of course. Can't you see I'm writing a book?

mdavatar.png
You must like writing then.

mdwells.png
Yes, writing is what I do best. I've tried science and teaching, but debate and short stories have so far been my forte.

mdavatar.png
What book are you working on?

mdwells.png
I've been working on one while we were here on Mars. I have most of the notes in my mind. Those dratted machines gave me the idea.

mdavatar.png
What is your opinion of Mars?

mdwells.png
It is such a cold, forbidding planet. It reminds me of my failed geology classes. *shudders* Ah, well, I didn't give it my all, I suppose. It is definitely time to go back to Earth when I begin reminiscing about geology. This accidental expedition has taken away two years of my life.

mdavatar.png
I never thought about interplanetary explorers missing Earth. I guess it makes sense when you think about it.

mdwells.png
I think I shall appreciate it much more now. I can't wait to return to my Jane.

mdavatar.png
Who is she?

mdwells.png
Ah, my lovely darling. Her real name is Amy, you know, but she will always be my Jane. We are scheduled to be married as soon as I return.

mdavatar.png
You have to admit: this has been an exciting expedition.

mdwells.png
Yes, speaking of nightmares! It was an incredible adventure, though, wasn't it? Maybe I can use the experience as the basis for another book. Yes, something to do with Mars. Or Martians. . .

mdavatar.png
By the way, what idea did the machines give you?

mdwells.png
The one here on Mars controls your dream state. I have hypothesized that machines could be created to control other things, such as time.

mdavatar.png
A Time Machine?! Preposterous! :monacle:

mdwells.png
Yes, a machine that allows you to travel through time. Quite an exciting concept, eh? You will have to read my book after it is published!

mdavatar.png
Can you explain any of the weird shit in your dreams?

mdwells.png
I never realized how important dreams can be. They can certainly show your present state of mind, but they also seem to exert force in the opposite direction, with nightmares influencing your choices in life. Fascinating.

mdavatar.png
How did those nightmares influence your choices?

mdwells.png
It was ingenious of the Martians to use our fears to trap us in our dreams. That invisible creature was truly horrible!

mdavatar.png
Why do you fear invisible creatures?

mdwells.png
Such a terrible feeling, to be pursued by something which you cannot see. The idea of invisibility is riveting, though. Perhaps another book . . .

mdavatar.png
Good day.

mdwells.png
Certainly, Sir. You must remember to purchase my book when it appears on the stands!

martian1420.png

I now speak with Louis Tiffany.

martian1421.png

mdtiffany.png
Well met, Elzair! How may I help you today?

mdavatar.png
Who are you, again?

mdtiffany.png
Tiffany, my good man. Louis Comfort Tiffany.

mdavatar.png
What was your profession on Earth?

mdtiffany.png
I am an artist and a sometime interior decorator.

mdavatar.png
What are your current artistic projects?

mdtiffany.png
Right now, i am working mainly in glass.

mdavatar.png
Why do you like glass so much?

mdtiffany.png
Glass is such a flexible medium for artwork. It is a pity that not many artists have discovered the joy of working with it.

mdavatar.png
What have you done interior-decorator-wise?

mdtiffany.png
I have designed the interiors of many structures, from the White House to armories to private homes.

mdavatar.png
You have some pretty impressive designs to your name!

mdtiffany.png
I can make or fix almost anything made of glass.

mdavatar.png
I have something that needs fixing.

mdtiffany.png
You have something that needs to be fixed? What is it?

mdavatar.png
This lens.

mdtiffany.png
Yes, lenses are made of glass. I don't know that I could create one form its conception, but I'm certain that I could repair a broken one.

mdavatar.png
That is good because I need to have a broken lens repaired.

mdtiffany.png
You have a broken lens? I must have the broken lens to be able to create the new one.

mdavatar.png
I have the lens with me, Mr. Tiffany.

mdtiffany.png
Excellent. I will return shortly.

martian1432.png

mdavatar.png
Good day.

mdtiffany.png
I will hope to see you again soon, Elzair. Good luck on your travels.

martian1434.png

I now speak with Lenin.

mdlenin.png
Ah, it is the one they call the Avatar. Zdravtsvuy, brother.

mdavatar.png
Who are you?

mdlenin.png
You may call me Lenin.

mdavatar.png
What did you do on Earth?

mdlenin.png
My premier occupation at this time is to organize socialist reform and revolution in Russia.

mdavatar.png
In Soviet Russia . . . aw, fuck it!

mdlenin.png
My homeland is now badly governed. The majority of the people are oppressed by the Tsar.

mdavatar.png
With a stupid name like that, how could they not be!

mdlenin.png
Assassination is not now out of the question. It is an alternative to be considered.

mdavatar.png
You want to assassinate your ruler?! Cool!

mdlenin.png
It can be a useful tool when used for political advancement of the people's advocates.

mdavatar.png
What other 'tools' do you have in your toolbox?

mdlenin.png
Assassination used as a tool is sometimes not recognized or understood by the masses.

mdavatar.png
The masses are always retarded.

mdlenin.png
As here on Mars. The masses did not understand Raxachk's motives.

mdavatar.png
And you do?

mdlenin.png
It is sometimes necessary to weed a garden. Occasionally, some good plants must perish for the cause.

mdavatar.png
You consider the plague akin to a weed-whacker?! Dude ...

mdlenin.png
Raxachk's tool, if used with wisdom ad discretion, could have brought about a social revolution.

mdavatar.png
I fail to see anything social about a doomsday weapon.

mdlenin.png
The revolution would not have been destructive to the people - or plantals - in general. It would only have destroyed those standing in the way of social progress.

mdavatar.png
You think Raxachk is a progressive?!

mdlenin.png
Unfortunately, Raxachk is not wise or discrete. He planned to use the tool only for personal advancement and power, not for the good of the masses.

mdavatar.png
You think dictators want anything else?

mdlenin.png
In a case of power misused, as for Raxachk, assassination must be considered as an appropriate means to achieve a goal.

mdavatar.png
What is your goal?

mdlenin.png
We must be allowed to return to Earth. There is much there that I must accomplish.

mdavatar.png
Ooookay then. I am leaving now.

mdlenin.png
Indeed, we are both busy men. Do svedanya.

martian1439.png

I now speak with Mark Twain.

mdclemens.png
Greetings friend. Pleasant weather we're havin'.

mdavatar.png
Who are you again?

mdclemens.png
I suppose you've forgotten already. Well, that's fine. Best call me Clemens, Sam Clemens. Most folks who read know me as Mark Twain, though.

mdavatar.png
What do you do?

mdclemens.png
I try to make a living as a writer. Usually works. I've been putting together a journal of our stay here on Mars for publication when we get home. I think it'll sell. I don't know if many people will be able to use it as a tour guide, though.

mdavatar.png
How do you like Mars?

mdclemens.png
The beautiful red planet, home of talking greenery and conversing crops.

mdavatar.png
You mean the Martians?

mdclemens.png
Yep, they would make one heck of a salad if they didn't talk back.

mdavatar.png
Yes they would.

mdclemens.png
You could make a great meal here if you never wanted to eat meat. Of course, the same objections people have to eating meat would apply here to plants. I suppose they'd just have to overcome their finer instincts, or starve. Always been a carnivore, myself.

mdavatar.png
Bye.

mdclemens.png
That's fine. You get to work and I'll wait right here.

I now head back to the lens towers at the North Pole.

martian1445.png

I install the broken motor on the first tower.

martian1447.png
martian1448.png

I install the broken lens on the second tower.

martian1449.png
martian1450.png
martian1451.png

I fill my spraygun up with weedkiller and kill all the weeds infesting the third tower.

mdavatar.png
Waitaminute! We are on Mars, right?

mdspector.png
Right.

mdavatar.png
So, shouldn't the infamous Face of Mars be around here someplace?

face-on-mars.jpg

martian1459.png

I find it at 37N 36W.

mdavatar.png
Great! Now, let's find the control system for the lens!

martian1464.png

I find it at 57N 24W.

martian1467.png

First, I check my watch to find the time is 9:50 AM.

martian1468.png

I then operate the controls and input the coordinates 0950.

martian1469.png

martian1470.png

martian1471.png

martian1472.png

martian1473.png
martian1474.png

mdavatar.png
We will do that, but first let's find that laboratory.

martian1475.png

Some reservoirs along the North Pole are now filled with water, but that does not mean it has been pumped across the entire planet.

martian1476.png

I find the (now unfrozen) entrance to Kaxishek's laboratory at 54N 112E.

martian1489.png
martian1490.png
martian1491.png

I have a look around, but I do not find much.

martian1479.png

I head to the room to the right and find the remains of two metal men. I find a few radium chips on the nonfunctional one.

martian1480.png

The other one is still 'sentient', however.

mdavatar.png
What are you called, robot?

mdcutter.png
I am called Cutter.

mdavatar.png
What is your function?

mdcutter.png
I am a gem cutter.

mdavatar.png
Your function is to cut gems?

mdcutter.png
That is my designation. My appendages are fashioned to facet gems along the proper planes.

mdavatar.png
What gems do you need?

mdcutter.png
They are called heartstones.

mdavatar.png
Why do you need a heartstone?

mdcutter.png
They are used to house the sentience within the mechanical men. They are immobile without them.

mdavatar.png
So that guy really did come up with a solution? How do I get a bunch of these here heartstones? Can you, what did you call it, 'facet' some for me?

mdcutter.png
If I have the proper azurite gem, I can fashion a heartstone.

mdavatar.png
What is that?

mdcutter.png
A blue gem used to create the heartstones. There is none here right now.

mdavatar.png
:rage: Is that all you need to fashion a heartstone?

mdcutter.png
I could do that if I had power.

mdavatar.png
What is wrong with your power?

mdcutter.png
My energy source is missing.

mdavatar.png
What energy source do you use?

mdcutter.png
I use one chunk of radium. Most of my kind are powered with this. My radium source has been exhausted.

martian1482.png

Spector uses his tongs to pick up the chips of radium and put them in his lead box.

martian1485.png
martian1486.png

Spector gives Cutter a chip of radium, and the robot is fit as a fiddle.

mdavatar.png
So, can you fashion the gem now?

mdcutter.png
Of course I am capable of cutting a gem. I must have the azurite to create a heartstone. You must bring some to me.

mdavatar.png
Where will I find some azurite?

mdavatar.png
Waitaminute! I remember Hearst saying he had an azurite stone.

I travel to the western half of Olympus.

martian1492.png

Apart from whacking weeds, a spraygun with weedkiller is deadly-effective against all plantals.

martian1493.png

mdavatar.png
Hearst, may I ask you about the azurite stone you have?

martian1494.png

mdavatar.png
Yes.

martian1495.png

mdavatar.png
What kind of favor?

martian1496.png
martian1497.png
martian1500.png
martian1501.png
martian1502.png
martian1503.png

mdavatar.png
Alright.

I head west around the mountains.

martian1504.png
martian1505.png
martian1506.png

I end up getting into a BIG skirmish with a pack of proto-Martians. Luckily, I am near the end of the game, so I have plenty of nasty surprises for them.

martian1507.png
martian1508.png
martian1509.png

It looks like the poor bastard Hearst sent out to get a photograph met a nasty fate

mdavatar.png
Shame. Oh well, better him than me!

I grab the camera and head back to Hearst.

mdavatar.png
I have the camera.

martian1519.png
martian1520.png

Hearst hands me the plate from the camera, and I head to Elysium to see if Melies can develop it.

martian1516.png

mdmelies.png
Ah, Monsieur l'Avatar! It is good to see you again.

mdavatar.png
Can you develop plates?

mdmelies.png
Oui, I could do that for you.

mdavatar.png
I have a plate right here, sir!

mdmelies.png
Excellent! I will return in a while.

martian1522.png

I now return to Hearst.

mdavatar.png
I have the photograph.

martian1528.png
martian1530.png

I take the azurite stone and head back to Cutter at the polar laboratory.

mdavatar.png
So, can you cut the heartstone now?

mdcutter.png
Of course I am capable of cutting a gem. I must have the azurite to create a heartstone.

mdavatar.png
I have some!

mdcutter.png
That is good. I will make the heartstone now.

martian1538.png

mdcutter.png
It is yours.

mdavatar.png
Alright! By the way, how do I transfer a Martain sentience into the heartstone?

mdcutter.png
Once it has a heartstone, the man is capable of housing sentience. To make it active and sentient, you must transfer a plantal's consciousness into it using the Dream Machine.

martian1490.png
martian1540.png

I grab the metal woman that was lying on the table. Now I have a body and a heartstone. The only thing missing is a volunteer, and I think I know just the Martian.

martian1542.png

I head back to the Hellas Dream Machine.

martian1543.png

mdavatar.png
Uh "Miss" Chsheket, how about joining up?

mdmartianchskeket.png
With no body to return to, I cannot leave this world of dreams. If you procured a body for me, I would be willing to join you.

mdavatar.png
What kind of body do you want?

mdmartianchskeket.png
I fear for my safety, Sir. In nothing less than an indestructible body would I walk in the real world.

mdavatar.png
Where would I find an indestructible body?

mdmartianchskeket.png
I seem to remember ... Of course! Kaxxishek! Xaktsesh's crazy podmate. At least, we thought he was crazy. Have you found his lab?

mdavatar.png
Yes.

mdmartianchskeket.png
That's wonderful! It is good to know that he was finally a success. With Prektesh gone, it is my turn. I must be the next to attempt a transfer. If you place an inert body in the Dream Machine and activate the machine, I will be ready. I hope to see you again, Elzair. In the Real-World.

I wake up.

martian1559.png
martian1560.png

I install the heart-stone into the metal woman.

martian1562.png

I place the metal woman in the seat and activate the Dream Machine.

martian1563.png

martian1565.png

martian1567.png

martian1569.png

mdsherman.png
I can see that my services are no longer required. This lady should know as much, or more, about Mars than I do. I will not take any arguments, Elzair. I must withdraw so that you may continue on with this lovely lady. Besides, I should get back to my companions to see what trouble they've gotten themselves into while I've been away.

mdavatar.png
Ladies and gentlemen, Sherman has left the building!

martian1571.png

mdchsheket.png
Greetings, person of Earth.

mdspector.png
I do suggest, Elzair, that we spend some time testing this solution to make sure it is a viable one before we try any more transfers.

mdchsheket.png
I must agree wholecormedly, doctor. I would not presume to endanger any of my plantals without being sure of this plan's success.

mdavatar.png
So, Chsheket, how do you like your new metal body?

mdchsheket.png
If only there were some way to make a body such as this more passably human in appearance . . .

mdnelliebly.png
Sarah Bernhardt would know quite a bit about makeup and disguise. We could ask her, Elzair.

mdchsheket.png
I believe we must try, then. Please, Elzair, for the sake of my Grovemates. We should also check with the leader of your people at Olympus.

mdavatar.png
Alright, we will do that.

mdchsheket.png
I look forward to our conversing again later. Of course, I look forward to everything now that I am alive again!

martian1580.png

martian1581.png

First, Chsheket grabs all of Sherman's old stuff that he was nice enough to leave behind.

martian1584.png

Then I decide to investigate the pumping facility to see why water is not flowing into the canals. The pumping facility is located at 19N 167W.

martian1586.png

I wind my way to the west.

martian1591.png

I talk to this mechanical man here.

martian1593.png

mdavatar.png
What is your designation, robot?

mddiver.png
I am called Diver.

mdavatar.png
What is your function?

mddiver.png
My job is to maintain the pipework here in the master pumping station.

mdavatar.png
Tell me about the pumping going.

mddiver.png
All water to fill the canals flows through this station.

mdavatar.png
Tell me about the canals.

mddiver.png
Water from the melted icecaps flows into the canals. A person would turn a special wheel to control the flow.

mdavatar.png
Did you say you got water from the icecaps?!

mddiver.png
There are lenses of ruby atop our towers which focus the sun's heat upon the ice caps, turning great sections to clean, pure water.

mdspector.png
According to Mr. Tesla, Mr. Peary had gone to explore the polar icelands on Mars. We should ask Mr. Peary about the towers.

mdnelliebly.png
*jots down notes* Yes, we should ask Mr. Peary about it. It has been a long time since there was water in the canals.

mdavatar.png
Where is the wheel to control the flow of water?

mddiver.png
The wheel is over beyond those steam leaks.

mdavatar.png
How do I get past the steam leaks?

mddiver.png
There are clockwork sensors that prevent me from moving that far. I could not get past the leaks safely and perform the necessary operation. Some of those like me were once coated in green sealant to make them ore durable and lifelike. One of them could pass the leaks with no difficulty.

mdavatar.png
Where does one get coated?

mddiver.png
The coating machine is empty of sealant now.

mdavatar.png
Where can I find more sealant?

mddiver.png
There is naother chamber like this one which hoses the sealant and the sprayer. It is to the southeast of here.

mdavatar.png
Why must it be green?

mddiver.png
Adding color to the coating did no harm.

Alright, first I head west.

martian1603.png

mdavatar.png
Yikes! There is no way any human could get past that!

martian1605.png

Since Chsheket's metal body is immune to the effects of hot steam, I send her alone.

martian1606.png

martian1608.png

She then operates the valve controls.

martian1609.png

martian1610.png

martian1611.png

martian1612.png

We then head out but take a detour to see the sealant machine Diver mentioned.

martian1587.png

We find it due south of the entrance to the facility.

martian1588.png

mdavatar.png
I wonder where the rubber is?

martian1589.png

mdavatar.png
It is in these crates, apparently.

Chsheket takes it along to keep an eye on it.

martian1590.png

I find a heat ray gun here as well.

martian1613.png

mdavatar.png
Hooray! The canals are finally filled with water!

mdavatar.png
Now, we just need to find a way to make the Martians look more human and find some ore.

Next time!

Good things Earthlings and Martians use the exact same system of time measurement.

Freeze ray gun?! Is that as awesome as it sounds?

mdtiffany.png
Tiffany, my good man. Louis Comfort Tiffany.
But... you yourself said earlier that's Charles Comfort Tiffany, Louis's father. The picture is definitely supposed to be Charles, though. *digs out the manual* Okay, according to the manual, that is indeed meant to be Louis. Someone screwed up in the art department.

Martian Dreams Part 7: The Perfect Woman

Ultima Worlds of Adventure: Martian Dreams

Part 7: The Perfect Woman

With the canals restored, it should be really easy to transport the last cart of iron from Syrtis Major to Olympus so Carnegie can construct our get-a-way vehicle.

martian1614.png

I notice that the mining cart rails south of the Syrtis Major mine lead right up to the water's edge.

martian1620.png

I remember seeing a barge with mining tracks in Hellas, so I head there. I find it at 27S, 62E.

martian1622.png

I flip the switch to get the bridge out of the way.

martian1623.png

I then head up the river.

martian1624.png

martian1625.png

martian1629.png

martian1630.png

martian1631.png
martian1632.png

I find my path blocked by a canal worm. My guns and the barge cannons make quick work of it.

martian1633.png

I finally arrive at my destination.

martian1634.png

I push a mining cart up to the mine.

martian1635.png

Unfortunately, I was too stupid to figure out how to get it past this device.

martian1636.png

I search the walls along the right tunnel until I find a deposit of iron ore.

martian1638.png
martian1639.png

I then bring the drill over and drill out a bunch of iron.

martian1640.png
martian1641.png

I then eat a purple berry and shovel the iron ore into the mining cart with the power of my mind.

martian1643.png

I shovel iron until I filled the cart.

mdavatar.png
That should be enough for Carnegie.

martian1644.png

I then push the cart onto the barge and headed for Olympus.

martian1663.png

I sail into the early morning. By the time I arrive, everyone (save Chsheket) is freezing.

martian1666.png

I push the mining cart into the Olympus mines.

martian1667.png

Unfortunately, I am again stumped by this doo-hickey!

mdavatar.png
There has to be something I can do to make this thing turn! Where is a wrench when you need on?

martian1670.png

mdavatar.png
Here!

martian1671.png
martian1672.png

I use the wrench to tighten the switch.

martian1673.png

Now it turn.

martian1676.png

I push the cart full of iron to the western tunnel and speak with Carnegie.

mdcarnegie.png
Ah, 'tis you again, Elzair. How may I be of assistance?

mdavatar.png
I have a cartload of iron for you.

mdcarnegie.png
Ah! More iron ore! Where did you get it?

mdavatar.png
I found a deposit near the front of the mines at Syrtis Major. I transported using the canal barge parked out front.

mdcarnegie.png
Oh, that is very good. I'll send some of my men to mine as much more as we need. At last we can finish our space cannon and go home! Thank you, Elzair, from all of the humans on Mars.

mdavatar.png
Finally! It is nice to get some appreciation around here for once!

mdcarnegie.png
Oh! We will, of course, need our propellant, the phlogistonite still stored in our space capsule. While my men are mining the ore, would you and your party bring that here for us?

mdavatar.png
:rage:

martian1704.png

I now head for the 1893 wreck to retrieve the phlogistonite containers. On the way I stop by Bill & Jane's shop. Unfortunately, a sextelleger gets there first.

martian1705.png
martian1706.png

mdavatar.png
Ouch!

It looks like I have to be careful leaving doors open, or the Martian fauna might kill a critical NPC leaving me screwed. Fortunately, I saved recently.

martian1707.png

I reach the 1893 crash site.

martian1708.png

mdavatar.png
Where are the phlogistonite cannisters?

martian1718.png

mdavatar.png
The only thing here is a broken strap.

martian1710.png

mdspector.png
Oh dear, Elzair! The phlogistonite must have been stolen!

mdavatar.png
Who would steal it?

mdspector.png
Perhaps we should return with this news to Mr. Carnegie and see what he thinks.

mdavatar.png
What could he do about it?

mdspector.png
He must be told about the theft immediately! If only we had a clue about the identity of the thief . . .

mdavatar.png
Is that broken strap a clue?

mdspector.png
*lost in thought* Most modern forensic techniques haven't been invented yet, but perhaps this metal band could provide some information nonetheless.

martian1719.png

I take the broken strap with me as evidence and head back to Carnegie.

mdcarnegie.png
Ah, 'tis you again, Elzair. How may I be of assistance?

mdavatar.png
I went to the crash site, but the phlogistonite has been taken!

mdcarnegie.png
Oh, dear! Do you have any clue who might have stolen it.

mdavatar.png
The only piece of evidence I found was this broken strap. *shows strap*

mdcarnegie.png
Perhaps Mr. Roosevelt can use his criminological expertise to determine the thief from that. Please, take it to him.

martian1728.png

I do so.

mdavatar.png
Teddy, my good man, do you have any criminological evidence to ascertain who took the phlogistonite from the ship?

mdroosevelt.png
Yes, in this particular case, I lack any samples of Rasputin's fingerprints with which to compare the prints that were collected near the capsule fuse. I desperately need to lay hands on some sort of clue that I know has been touched by Rasputin or by one of his henchmen. That would allow me to show positive identification of Rasputin as the criminal.

mdavatar.png
What kind of clue do you need?

mdroosevelt.png
I think your best bet would be to look in our ship from the Lowell expedition. If there is anything suspicious which might hold a fingerprint, you should bring it back to me and I'll take a look at it. Has your search for items that could contain fingerprints proved successful?

mdavatar.png
Would this broken strap suffice?

martian1732.png

mdroosevelt.png
Of all the luck! I shall require a microscope before I can complete my examination of the prints on this item.

mdnelliebly.png
If I may, Elzair, I believe that we have seen such an instrument before. Pray allow me a moment.

mdnelliebly.png
*ruffling through notebook* I believe that there was a microscope in the Martian laboratory in the settlement of Hellas. Would that suffice, Mr. Roosevelt?

mdroosevelt.png
Yes, quite.

mdroosevelt.png
Very well, go and retrieve it and return. I shall await you here.

martian1736.png
martian1737.png

I travel to Hellas, grab the microscope and return to Olympus.

mdavatar.png
Here is the strap and the microscope.

mdroosevelt.png
*after examining the prints* There is no doubt that the Rasputin prints collected near the capsule fuse Rasputin set off and the prints on the band you retrieved are identical. As I recall, this band was used to bind the barrels that held our supply of phlogistonite together. It is clear that Rasputin has stolen our propellant!

mdroosevelt.png
I would ask that you go and confront that so-called 'holy' man and try to retrieve the propellant. It is vital to our return to Earth. Personally I will stay behind to insure that Segal does not get involved. By the way, I notice that you have partially solved the problem of finding bodies for the Martians. But, really, I don't think that the average resident of Earth will be able to accept them in that state.

mdroosevelt.png
*examining Chsheket* Hmm. Well, I don't really have any solution for THIS problem, but I will suggest that you get the help of a professional in the matter of disguise. I would speak with Miss Bernhardt if I were you.

martian1686.png

I decide to take his advice and see if Miss Sarah Bernhardt can make the Chsheket look more human.

martian1688.png

mdbernhardt.png
Mon Dieu! Il est incroyable! staring at Chsheket What is that?

mdchsheket.png
Please do not be alarmed. My companion has brought me to you to find a solution for a particular problem. Apparently you are skilled in cosmetic adjustments.

mdavatar.png
Can you make her look more human?

mdspector.png
We wantto disguise the mechanical bodies to look human.

mdbernhardt.png
I can use rouge berries to make a pigment that will look the color of human flesh, but it will not make the body look human. Perhaps there is a way to cover the metal with some material that would hold the pigment.

mdchsheket.png
You know, the mechanical men at the cisterns are coated in a water-repellent substance that looks as if it has the consistency of flesh. I am sure that Madame Bernhardt could mix color in with that material to make it appear like worm-skin. If we find such a substance, Madame Bernhardt, would you prepare a color to blend with the coating to make the metal body appear human?

mdbernhardt.png
But of course! i will be only too happy to assist, Mademoiselle. You should retrieve the rouge berries as soon as you can.

mdavatar.png
Where do I find rouge berries?

mdbernhardt.png
The berries are located in Argyre. Please, go there and retrieve them for me.

I now see if Peary knows any way to break into Argyre.

mdavatar.png
What is Argyre like?

mdpeary.png
I've seen the city. It has been heavily fortified by Rasputin and his followers. All access to the city has been blocked by thick metal gates which are barred from the inside.

mdavatar.png
How do I break down the gates?

mdpeary.png
The gates of Argyre are exposed from the canals. The barge cannons can fire a round of ammunition at sufficient velocity to breach the gates, but the balls themselves are too soft for this purpose.

mdavatar.png
Where can I get some cannonballs that are suitable?

mdpeary.png
If Mr. Carnegie could fashion some steel cannonballs of the right caliber, the barge cannon could breach the fortifications!

I speak to Carnegie.

mdavatar.png
Can you make me some special cannonballs?

mdcarnegie.png
I wouldn't know how to make a lead cannonball, friend. Wait! I could make some of steel! Would that be acceptable?

mdavatar.png
Yes.

mdcarnegie.png
Good! Then we'll get started. It's a good thing that there's plenty of steel. Making a few cannonballs won't endanger the construction of the cannon. Please make yourself at home. This could take a while.

He emerges after a short while.

mdcarnegie.png
Eureka! I knew I could do it. You can do anything, you know, if you really want to and are willing to work for it.

mdcarnegie.png
*gives cannonballs to Elzair* There you go. Now go find our phlogistonite, friend, and we'll all go home!

I now have steel cannonballs. I get on a barge with a cannon and sail east to Argyre.

martian1761.png

Unfortunately, the mine barge is too wide to make it near the Argyre walls.

martian1762.png

I saw a smaller cannon barge at 4S 7W, so I grab that one.

martian1764.png

This one is just right.

martian1765.png

Here are the walls of Argyre.

martian1766.png
martian1767.png

I load the steel cannonballs into the cannon.

martian1769.png
martian1770.png

I now fire the cannon at the walls.

martian1771.png

I enter Argyre.

martian1772.png

I speak to this fellow.

martian1773.png

mdmiles.png
Oy, who are you? Well, I don't care who you are. You're just trying to take advantage of me, I know it!

mdavatar.png
Who are you then?

mdmiles.png
You can call me Miles.

mdavatar.png
Why do you think I want to take advantage of your?

mdmiles.png
You probably think I'm someone you can push around! Well, I'll tell you right now, it won't work. I've been taught to think for myself.

mdavatar.png
How?

mdmiles.png
That's right. Rasputin told me not to listen to others because I'm too easily influenced.

mdavatar.png
I get that.

mdmiles.png
So I'll show you. I'll show all of you. I'm only going to do what Rasputin says. 'Cause I'm my own man, a free human being.

mdavatar.png
Where is Rasputin anyway?

mdmiles.png
You think you're so smart blowing down our wall, but Mr. Rasputin will put you in your place! He's got the whole secret plan worked out. You'll see.

mdavatar.png
Go on.

mdmiles.png
Yeah. He's got the fuel, and no one but him knows where it's hidden. Nobody gets to go to Earth unless they do whatever he says. And nobody better try anything, because if they do . . .

mdavatar.png
Go on.

mdmiles.png
Just go find out for yourself! He's in that building to the northwest. Go past this building and enter the bigger one through the west side.

martian1775.png

I now find the Argyre Dream Machine.

martian1776.png

It does not work, though.

martian1779.png
martian1781.png

I find some rouge berries that Sarah wants growing in the northwest part of town.

martian1783.png
martian1784.png
martian1785.png

I find a bunch of spare guns and ammo around here. I even find another Belgian combine and another elephant gun!

martian1787.png

I speak to this fellow here.

martian1788.png

mdfenton.png
What are you doing here? I have not seen you around.

mdavatar.png
I was just looking around.

mdfenton.png
I thought I knew everyone in this land. Rasputin sends me out when he needs to find something out.

mdavatar.png
Who are you?

mdfenton.png
Call me Mr. Fenton.

mdavatar.png
Where is Rasputin?

mdfenton.png
Even though you managed to break into Argyre, we aren't too worried about you. Mr. Rasputin has it all under control. He could snap you in half like a dry twig with his telekinesis. If he wanted to he could use psychometry on your clothing and know everything you've done while wearing them within the past century. And he's already read your thoughts, even as we have conversed here. I'm afraid he as you at a great disadvantage, Elzair.

I now decide to speak with Mr. Rasputin.

martian1790.png

On the way I find Emma Goldman, a prominent female anarchist who has the dubious honor of being deported from both the U.S.A and the U.S.S.R (possibly among others). Here she is portrayed as a bitchy psychopath.

martian1791.png

mdavatar.png
Who are you?

mdgoldman.png
I'm Emma Goldman. Glad to meet you. Please make yourself comfortable.

mdavatar.png
What are you doing here?

mdgoldman.png
On Earth I was limited to being an orator, speaking to groups. But here I have much more opportunity!

mdavatar.png
You fancy yourself an orator?

mdgoldman.png
Do you consider speaking one's mind to be a crime or a right, Sir?

mdavatar.png
Right.

mdgoldman.png
A right, you say? Then perhaps in you I might find a sympathetic listener.

mdavatar.png
You must like speaking.

mdgoldman.png
Human beings must convey all information by writing or speaking. I am a writer and speaker, therefefore I am very powerful. And you ... you are very handsome ... You could help me get rid of Carnegie.

mdavatar.png
What kind of opportunity?

mdgoldman.png
Yes! A chance to put an end to Andrew Carnegie, that offensive tyrant!

mdavatar.png
You must hate Carnegie.

mdgoldman.png
Grrr! I'll break his monopoly on the Goods on Mars, just as I broke his reflectors.

mdavatar.png
You are the one who broke the reflectors?

mdgoldman.png
After Lowell left, Carnegie took control of them. He must have used them to tell Earth to send him more supplies. I don't know that Morse code, but I can see a clear opportunity to take advantage of us!

Alright, it is now time to have a chat with the Mad Monk himself.

martian1809.png

Of course, right now he is a little bid madder than usual.

martian1810.png

mdrasputin.png
Ha! That is all incidental. I have hidden your precious phlogistonite in the Dream World. You dare not try to remove it.

mdavatar.png
Who are you, really?

mdrasputin.png
You can call me Rasputin. But my true name is Raxachk.

mdchsheket.png
No! It can't be ... Raxachk is the one who made the plague!

mdrasputin.png
Even so.

mdavatar.png
What do you do?

mdrasputin.png
Rasputin is rightful ruler of all he surveys.

mdavatar.png
Why can't I remove the phlogistonite?

mdrasputin.png
I have perfected a way to send real objects to the Dream World. You cannot recover them without setting off a cataclysm of epic proportions. More importantly, I can destroy both Mars and the Dream world.

mdavatar.png
Did you say you can destroy Mars?

mdrasputin.png
With the useful explosive you call phlogistonite, I can shatter this planet like ice beneath a hammer.

mdspector.png
Even if he's just hidden the stuff, it's still a distinct possibility, Elzair. Even a well-placed dynamite charge could cause the fragile Martian volcanic shelves to fracture Phlogistonite is far more dangerous!

mdavatar.png
You said you found a way to physically transfer objects to the Dream World?

mdrasputin.png
Since my intellect far surpassed that of any other Martian, it was not difficult for me to devise a machine to take real objects into the Dream World. As a safeguard, I have also disabled the Dream Machine here in Argyre. It is inoperative. The reverse, bringing objects back from the Dream wWorld, is even more difficult, but I can do that, too. With this technology, there is nothing I cannot destroy.

mdavatar.png
You can destroy the Dream World as well?

mdrasputin.png
Indeed. The Dream World would be utterly obliterated by returning the phlogistonite to the real world.

mdchsheket.png
I fear he speaks the truth, Elzair. Early experiments by my people show such material transfers to be very dangerous! We must free my people from the Dream World before we tamper with the very structures of reality and Dreamreality.

mdrasputin.png
Free them? One such as you could never free them.

mdavatar.png
Why not?

mdrasputin.png
The Martians could never be free in metal bodies. The people of Earth accept no one who is different as an equal. My poor plantals would be kept as slaves or freaks. You cannot win, Earth creature. I have won. You shall never leave Mars.

I now have what I came for, so I head back to Olympus to give the berries to Sarah.

mdavatar.png
I am back!

mdbernhardt.png
Bon! You have, then, brought me more of the rouge berries, non?

martian1814.png

martian1817.png

mdbernhardt.png
Here you are, my frined. This pigment should look quite close to the color of human skin.

I now head back to the pump station.

martian1819.png
martian1820.png

First, Chsheket inserts the rubber into the sprayer machine.

martian1821.png
martian1822.png

Next I insert the Sarah's pigment into the sprayer as well.

martian1823.png

Chsheket steps into the sprayer machine, and I use the controls.

martian1824.png

martian1826.png

martian1828.png

martian1830.png

martian1832.png

mdavatar.png
Hubba, Hubba!!

awooga.jpg

Let's see it again!

martian1833.png

mdavatar.png
Damn! :)

mdfemalehumanmartian.png
Thank you, Dr. Spector, for giving me this - what is it called again? Oh, yes, clothing.

mdavatar.png
Damn! Prude! :x

mdnelliebly.png

mdfemalehumanmartian.png
I gather that I should wrap myself in it at all times?

mdspector.png
 Ah. Yes, well. Most times. Perhaps you should speak with one of the ladies about that.

mdfemalehumanmartian.png
Thank you, doctor. I will do that.

martian1839.png

mdavatar.png
She was the woman who came to my door in the beginning of the game!

mdfemalehumanmartian.png
We must speak to your fellow humans at Olympus Mons. They are the largest concentrated group. They have a greater number to help us. Our next move depends upon their leader, the one called Segal. I do not believe we can liberate those Martians still in the Dream World without his assistance.

We will wrap this game up next time!

Man, what a marathon.

I'd suggest that after finishing this, you play all wizardries from 1 to 8, the all the M&M, from 1 to 9, including spinoffs... Just kidding.

No, after this he has to open an Ultima Online account and post a daily journal of his exciting adventures.

Seeing Mark Twain on Mars makes me think of the awesome stop-motion film The Adventures of Mark Twain. Anyone ever see it?

Also dang, I'd hit that metal lady. That said, Cshekhet's human form doesn't really look like the woman from the beginning of the game at all.

It looks like I have to be careful leaving doors open, or the Martian fauna might kill a critical NPC leaving me screwed.

Nice C&C. Y'know...if you ignore how stupid it is that the NPCs never close doors.

Hate to correct comrade Ulyanov, but doesn't he mean zdravstvuy? Not to mention that he's using a familiar term, tho' I guess he lubs the Avatar.

Insert clever insult here
I remember seeing a review for this in the Finnish Pelit-magazine back then and thinking that the graphics look FIIIIINE! Oh how times have changed.

Playing UO is meaningless since all the expansions and updates have raped and burned all the Ultima-lore from the game.

Excellent job! So who's going to retcon the game to make Pluto a dwarf planet?

I don't think they ever had a review of this on Pelit. Maybe you are thinking of the walkthrough they had in one of the first issues?

Martian Dreams Part 8: The War of the Worlds

Ultima Worlds of Adventure: Martian Dreams

Part 8: The War of the Worlds

Before I move against Raxachk, I should inform Mr. Segal, the leader of Olympus, of my plans.

martian1844.png

I do so now.

martian1845.png

mdsegal.png
Hello, old friend! I see you've succeeded in the matter of Martian bodies. This is wonderful!

mdavatar.png
I found a lab in the North Pole where a Martian had managed to create a metal body to place a Martian soul in. It just needs a heartstone, which is an azurite gem that is fashioned by one of the robots up there into a vessel for a Martian soul. Chsheket, a Martian from the Hellas colony, volunteered, and I transferred her in here. Then we found some rouge berries in Argyre that Ms. Bernhardt turned into a dye. We then found a sealant machine in the pump facility that we used to give her a rubber skin that appears human.

mdsegal.png
This is fantastic! I understand that Rasputin has our propellant. You must retrieve it at once, old friend. Face him down! Let him know we won't stand for his interference! We will work here to fashion more humanoid bodies for the other Martians. When you return with the phlogistonite, we shall all be ready to leave this God-forsaken planet. Now, go man, go!

I decide to take the transport tube to Argyre this time.

martian1851.png

The gate is still in the way, but it looks like something bad has happened to Fenton.

martian1852.png

I take a barge and approach from the east.

martian1853.png

Miles is dead too.

martian1855.png

Rasputin and Goldman are alright, though.

mdgoldman.png
Living humans! I thought that Raxachk had slain all but me!

mdavatar.png
Where is he?

mdgoldman.png
Yes, Raxachk! He murdered Maurice and the others, then forced me at gunpoint to operate the Dream Machine for him.

mdavatar.png
He has fled into the Dream World?!

mdgoldman.png
Raxachk has withdrawn into the Dream World, abandoning Rasputin's body for now. The Dream Machine had to be reactivated for his escape. I have made sure that it remained functional so that you could follow. In his madness I believe he has become bent on the destruction of all humans on this planet!

mdavatar.png
How?

mdgoldman.png
He said he was capable of destroying Mars.

mdfemalehumanmartian.png
If he transfers any objects back from the Dream Word to this reality, there WILL be catastrophes!

mdspector.png
Then someone must stop him! You must stop him, Elzair!

First I speak to Grigori Rasputin. He was a Russian monk that wormed his way into the court of Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia. He was said to have mystical healing powers and was supposedly the only one who could treat Nicholas's son Alexei, who suffered from hemophilia.

martian1856.png

mdavatar.png
You are Rasputin, right?

mdrasputin.png
Grigori Rasputin, at your service!

mdavatar.png
What are you doing here?

mdrasputin.png
I am a man of God, questing for the means of His glory. I fear I have been duped by Raxachk, however.

mdavatar.png
How?

mdrasputin.png
His power and brilliance are beyond compare. It must have been he who sent visions to me on Earth.

mdavatar.png
What visions?

mdrasputin.png
They drew me to this Red Planet, with dreams of awesome power and the ability to rule the world?

mdavatar.png
You wanted to rule the world?

mdrasputin.png
I didn't realize that Raxachk planned to use my body as a vehicle to rule Mars, with little regard at all for myself, trapped in the Dream World, or for Earth. Still, his strength of will, his enormous intellect, and his mental powers, mysterious even to a student of strange things, fascinate me.

mdavatar.png
What kind of powers does he have?

mdrasputin.png
The Martians dabbled in mental powers, acquired through the use of various berries: specific berries granted specific psychic abilities. Raxachk himself became so powerful that the no longer required the berries to influence people and events across vast distances or to move huge objects by the sheer power of his mind.

mdavatar.png
How did he get you to enter the Dream World?

mdrasputin.png
Raxachk must have been the influence that compelled me to use the Dream Machine. He trapped me in the Dream World and took control of my body in this physical world.

mdavatar.png
What nightmare were you trapped in?

mdrasputin.png
I dreamt I was at a formal dinner, where I was poisoned by my enemies, but I was not killed by the poison.

mdavatar.png
 Okay. How were you killed?

mdrasputin.png
They truly sought my death. When the poison failed, they shot me and stabbed me. Despite all this, I still drew breath.

mdavatar.png
How did they stop it?

mdrasputin.png
At the last they pushed me through a hole in the icy surface of a frozen river. The current pulled me away from the hole, and I was trapped, perpetually drowning. It was a horrible and seemingly eternal nightmare. It was suddenly dispelled, and I awoke, just moments ago. Apparently Raxachk fled back into the Dream World for his own reasons, and i returned to my body through natural laws.

mdavatar.png
 He truly is the Mad Monk!

It is now time to pursue Raxachk.

martian1857.png

I sit in the Dream Machine, and Spector throws the switch.

mdavatar.png
Who wants to bet that I will have to face some bullshit 'inner tests' before I can kill Raxachk?

martian1858.png

martian1860.png

martian1862.png

martian1864.png

mdavatar.png
This is a weird place. I wonder what is across this bridge?

martian1884.png

mdavatar.png
GODDAMNIT!!

mdavatar.png
What the fuck is Faulinei, the Shadowlord of Falsehood, doing here?

martian1866.png

mdfaulinei.png
How delightful, you do indeed remember me! It has been a long time, Elzair, since we last met in Britannia at the Lycaeum. You must have thought me and my siblings destroyed, but as you can see, your attempt was unsuccessful.

mdfaulinei.png
Here, in the world of dreams and shadows, WE will dictate your actions, leading you down the paths of our 'virtues', until you learn the Falsehood of your 'incorruptible' stance as the Avatar. I shall be overjoyed to teach it to you.

mdavatar.png
I thought I destroyed you!

mdfaulinei.png
It is fuitle to attempt to destroy us. Your feeble 'virtues' are found in the hearts of all people, but so are our virtues, their opposites. Unlike ours, you virtues require constant vigilance and self-examination. Why spend great effort and time developing 'virtues' when they may be had through simple instinctive selfishness? In any case, we cannot be destroyed as long as a human heart nourishes us, and as you see we can be found even in your own.

mdavatar.png
Tell me what you want me to know about Falsehood.

mdfaulinei.png
Falsehood has many forms. A mortal can lie to another, to cover guilt or achieve a desire, and that is satisfying. Best of all, however, is a lie to oneself: 'Pretend to be happy when you are hurt or sad, and you will be happy." Or 'Present the right appearance to the world and what you want will be given to you.' Delightful! Even my siblings delight in Falsehood: 'I need no one else, so I hate the people who I wish loved me." 'I could do something to help, but it wouldn't make any difference.' Falsehood is the supreme principle of life!

mdavatar.png
Fine, give me your test.

mdfaulinei.png
Step into the gate I open before you. Beyond, you will find your old friend, Johann Spector. You will also find one of my lies, in his image. Of course you can trust your friend to tell you the way out of the maze, and of course my creation will lie to you. If you find such power in 'truth', you will easily tell the difference.

martian1885.png

I then land in a place with two Spectors and some other objects. I speak to this Spector now.

martian1887.png

mdavatar.png
How do I do that?

mdspector.png
The rules are simple. Once you have determined which of us is the false Spector, go to him and say to him that he is a 'liar'. If you are correct, you will have passed the test. The true Spector will open the door for you to leave.

martian1890.png

mdavatar.png
Damn! I am handsome. I wonder if these mirrors have any other uses?

I move the mirror over to where Spector is standing.

martian1892.png

mdavatar.png
Okay! Let's speak to the other Spector.

He says the same thing as the first one.

martian1893.png

mdavatar.png
Something is fishy here.

mdspector.png
Hello, my friend. You must determine which one of us is lying to you.

mdavatar.png
You are the liar here.

martian1895.png

mdavatar.png
Whoah!

mdshartek.png
You have uncovered my illusion. The door to the exit is now unlocked.

martian1898.png

The first Spector opens the exit for me, and I continue on my way.

martian1899.png

mdavatar.png
Not another one!

martian1901.png

mdastaroth.png
Greetings again, Elzair. Welcome to the shrine of Hatred, here deep within you own being! But of course I am cordial to you! Is not the thin veneer of cordiality the noblest display of one's own inner hatred?

mdavatar.png
Hello, Astaroth. Tell me about Hatred.

mdastaroth.png
Now you are beginning to speak with clarity. Certainly, you of all mortals can appreciate the value of Hatred. Without hatred you would not find the strength to object, to repel you assailants, to enjoy the pleasures of conflict. Without hatred you would be limited in your capacity for self-indulgence: Why give up any pleasure for an enemy? Are not all strangers unfriends?

mdavatar.png
What is your test?

mdastaroth.png
Here, step through this obelisk. Beyond lies my demonstration of the power of Hatred. If that Love you profess is so strong, perhaps you will find an expression of it that overcomes the purity of the Hatred you will find.

martian1911.png

I approach the obelisk.

martian1912.png

It takes me to this area. I collect all the dreamstuff.

martian1913.png
martian1914.png

mdavatar.png
Weird!

martian1915.png

I finally arrive here. I speak with this Martian.

martian1916.png

mdavatar.png
Who are you, and what do you do?

martian1917.png

mdavatar.png
Friends?!

martian1918.png

mdavatar.png
What is your vengeance?

martian1919.png

mdavatar.png
Okay . . .

martian1920.png

I found one piece of dreamstuff that became an elixir of healing.

martian1921.png

mdavatar.png
Here goes nothing!

martian1923.png

martian1925.png

mdavatar.png
Gee, I wonder which Shadowlord this is?

martian1926.png

mdnosfentor.png
I am so pleased to see you again, dear Elzair! Perhaps this time you will discover that you can never conquer your own weakness!

mdavatar.png
Just shut up and give me your test.

mdnosfentor.png
I propose a simple test of your courage. If you accpet and win, I will allow you to continue your journey unmolested. If you fail, I will accept you into the ranks of my disciples. Your friends are in need of help. They are about to be devoured by a Sand Leviathan. You must simply go to them and rescue them. Of course, the path to them is not for the faint of heart. Step into this obelisk to begin your task.

martian1930.png

I step into the obelisk.

martian1931.png

I am teleported to this hallway. I head north.

martian1932.png

I take major health damage.

martian1933.png

mdavatar.png
Shit! I am not sure if I am gonna make it.

martian1934.png

martian1935.png

I get this dreamstuff.

martian1936.png

I form it into a saber.

martian1937.png

mdavatar.png
En garde!

I manage to kill the tentacle of this creature.

martian1938.png

I have passed all three tests and am taken to where Raxachk is hiding.

martian1939.png

mdraxachk.png
I know why you are here: your thoughts are like an open scroll, a scroll with little worth reading. Yes, I have your precious phlogistonite! And I am not going to back down at the mere sight of the mighty Avatar, Elzair! You think you can defeat me, hah!

mdavatar.png
You are Raxachk, correct?

mdraxachk.png
I am Raxachk, Lord of Mars and future Emperor of the Solar System!

mdavatar.png
What are you doing here?

mdraxachk.png
I am bidding my time here while my plans reach fruition.

mdavatar.png
What plans?

mdraxachk.png
Yes, soon I will be off to your Earth to take it over with the power of my dream technology. You pitiful Earthlings aren't even able to leave the planet without your phlogistonite.

mdavatar.png
Where are you hiding the phlogistonite?!

mdraxachk.png
I took you propellant, and as you can see I have it here in my citadel. Perhaps you'd like me to give it to you?

mdavatar.png
Yes!

mdraxachk.png
Why should I help you? You are unable to affect me in any way. True, I am bored by the wait here. Perhaps you can afford me some entertainment.

mdavatar.png
Fine.

mdraxachk.png
If you win three combats to entertain me, I'll give you your propellant. Do you accept?

mdavatar.png
Yes.

mdraxachk.png
Very well.

martian1943.png
martian1944.png

I make quick work of the jumping beans, and I try to grab as much of the dreamstuff as possible.

mdraxachk.png
Of course mere vermin like that area hardly a challange. Would you care to try something a little more interesting? Do you accept?

mdavatar.png
Yes.

mdraxachk.png
Very well.

martian1947.png

Since I have nowhere else to go, I enter the mine.

martian1948.png
martian1949.png

In here I grab more dreamstuff and, while wielding the best weapon I have, slay all the ammonoids.

mdraxachk.png
That was scarcely more difficult than the last. It is time you encountered a REAL monster!

martian1951.png
martian1952.png

I try to collect as much dreamstuff as possible.

martian1953.png

mdavatar.png
Oh fuck!

martian1955.png

Fortunately, I can imagine an elephant gun.

martian1956.png

mdavatar.png
THIS is my BOOMSTICK!!

mdraxachk.png
Ah, that was quite diverting. But now I am tired of my play. Have a nice eternity. There is nothing you can do to harm me.

mdavatar.png
Do?

mdraxachk.png
Your powers in this dream realm are disgustingly weak. You barely have the force of will to form dreamstuff into objects you know well.

mdavatar.png
Dreamstuff?

mdraxachk.png
Here in the dream realm, sheer mental power controls physical reality. Even a mind as pathetic as yours can shpae objects you are familiar with from blobs of dreamstuff, but you don't have access to any dreamstuff here. And you do not have the power to gather dreamstuff from the void.

mdavatar.png
Why can't I harm you?

mdraxachk.png
I have constructed this citadel to be too strong for any weapon your pitiful race can imagine to penetrate. Even if you had the mental power to gather your own dreamstuff, your race will be unable to imagine a weapon powerful enough to harm me for a hundred years or more.

martian1958.png

I realize I have all three kinds of berries: brown, purple and green. I eat a purple and green one.

martian1959.png

I eat a brown berry and gain clairvoyance. I notice that there is a large pile of dreamstuff in a locked room.

martian1962.png

I use my telekinesis powers to flip the switch to open the door.

martian1964.png

I then pull out a bunch of dreamstuff and start forming it into objects.

martian1965.png

mdavatar.png
Let's see, saber, nope; hammer, nope; chisel, nope; sledgehammer, nope; M60 Machine Gun ... waitaminute!

martian1966.png

mdavatar.png
Oh Raxachk ....

martian1967.png

mdavatar.png
SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!!

martian1968.png

martian1969.png

martian1971.png

martian1973.png

martian1975.png

martian1977.png

mdavatar.png
Holy shit! The planet feels like it is tearing itself apart! We better get back to Olympus fast!

martian1979.png

I grab all three phlogistonite cannisters and head for the barge.

martian1980.png

martian1981.png

I sail as quickly as possible back to Olympus. I then head west down the stairway.

martian1982.png

I finally arrive at the Olympus mine.

martian1983.png

It looks like all the NPCs in the game are lined up to board the rocket.

martian1985.png

I give the phlogistonite canisters to Mr. Carnegie.

martian1987.png

Awesome. Great job, Elzair.

So what happens if you fail a Shadowlord test? Just death-screen or summat?

Also, what happened to the Martians? Were they all put into robot bodies and saved or are they all stuck in the dream world forever cept naked hawt apparently face/hair-changing robo chick.
Seriously, she has curly hair in the opening cinematic. This stuff makes no sense.

your race will be unable to imagine a weapon powerful enough to harm me for a hundred years or more.

Clever.

I assume you either wake-up or are just warped back to the Shadowlord and forced to do the test over again. I did not fail any of them, but I did get killed by the big squid thing, and I was just teleported back to the center island, given a lecture by Raxachk, and was able to fight it again.

I assume they were in the long line of people in the Olympus mines. I need to check on that, though.

Also, there is supposed to be a wisp in this game in an abandoned city west of Syrtis Major Planum, but I could never find him. Has anybody else?

I checked my notes from multiple plays of the game, but nothing for a wisp. Although I can honestly say I'm not a master of the game.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the wisp could only be found during nighttime. I could be wrong.

Also, the Martians are indeed in the final lineup, all in red-headed android bodies.

I haven't found anything specific about the wisp, other than the fact there is a portrait for one in the game. Also, it looks like you can cheat and teleport yourself to the wisp's location:

It would be interesting to see what the wisp had to say.

I did find this Easter Egg in another LP:

Epilogue

As with so many Ultima games, the ending isn't entirely happy. The Martians are saved, but Mars is gone, and so is the civilization they knew. They'll integrate into the population of Earth, but their dreams will ever be on Mars.

And someday, when humanity takes its "first" steps onto the Red Planet... well, who knows? Somebody in that expedition might know a few things about the place. And maybe Mars will bloom. Again.

But you're mostly interested in the secret Ruby Slippers from the Wizard of Oz.

I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Warren.

Why Avatar, you've had the power to go home whenever you wanted! Just click your heels three times and say...

...I'd like to watch the ending movie!

Well, I'm out of ideas. Take care, everyone.
