MTC, Law and Order, mind control, satellites, fruitcakes. They're cooking something big and Tex is on their trail. Something tells me the Lost Dutchman's Diamond mine could be a goldmine...

ms_4896_resize.png

ms_4908_resize.png

Bah, another red herring :x

Code:

We still need to find the whereabouts of the two last people in the MTC payroll list, Bosworth Clark and Sam Jones. Peter Dull, the insurance agent should know about Clark :

ms_4926_resize.png

ms_4939_resize.png

PeterDull.png
Yes, I've written several insurance policies for Dr. Clark. He's quite eccentric. His laboratory is in Death Valley.

Tex1.png
In the desert ?

PeterDull.png
He works with satellites and says the reception is much better in the desert. Try NC 9932.

Let's head over there...

ms_4993_resize.png

ms_4999_resize.png

Damn. We move to check the body.

ms_5001_resize.png

We check his I.D. It's Bosworth Clark. Yet another dead scientist. He also has an appointment book on him, we skim through its pages :

ms_5020_resize.png

Tex1.png
Frank Schimming, the current head of MTC. I need to have another word with that creep.

Sure, but first we'll keep on searching the lab. Behind the calendar we find Clark's hidden stocks :

ms_5058_resize.png

Needles to say, we take possession of them.

Tex1.png
Stealing from dead scientists is totally not questionable.

The monitors around the lab are showing satellite images. We find some relating blue prints :

ms_5077_resize.png

We take them with us, you never know. On the floor there is a bunch of camel cigarette butts and a matchbook from a hotel :

ms_5131_resize.png

Tex1.png
Hmm, same kind of cigarette butts were scattered in Davis' lab. Maybe I'll find some answers in that hotel...

Next to them we spot some sort of list :

ms_5138_resize.png

Damn, these are some extra big rats.

rodents.gif

To the right we find a pair of gloves :

ms_5226_resize.png

We take them. They'll be useful for moving those vines in Greg Call's lab. Nothing more to do here, let's go pawn some stuff :

ms_5277_resize.png

Being a P.I. has its good moments. I think it's time we talked to Schimming again...

ms_5294_resize.png

ms_5307_resize.png

Schimming.png
I got a call from someone named Bosworth Clark several days ago. he said he had something very important to talk to me about.

Tex1.png
Yeah ? What was it about ?

Schimming.png
I don't know. I told him I was a busy man and to call back for an appointment. I haven't heard from him since.

Tex1.png
And you wont, he's dead. A lot of scientists that were working for MTC are ending up dead, Schimming. What can you tell me about the MTC president, Tom Griffith ?

Schimming.png
I'm sure he would like to be president of Gideon, but I'm not about to turn control of this company over to him or anyone else.

We wasn't much help. As we're about to leave, we get a fax :

ms_5339_resize.png

Yeah, Yeah, we've heard that before...

Next stop : Big surf hotel :

ms_5351_resize.png
ms_5355_resize.png

So now we know the name of the killer, it's Big Jim Slade. As for the initials "R.K." there's only one man in our list of names that fits : Robert Knott, the head of Law and Order. We note the name "Lola Lovetoy" for future reference.

Tex1.png
Yep, she's obviously a witness I need to question...:smug:

We've yet to locate Sam Jones. John Klaus supposedly knows his whereabouts...

ms_4961_resize.png

ms_4974_resize.png

Klaus.png
He's an arrogant old Nazi who works in Las Vegas, Use NC 0021.

Tex1.png
Thanks.

Klaus.png
Be careful... he's a faithful Law and Order party member, and he's not going to be cooperative with you.

We know how to make scumbags cooperate. We set course for Jones :

ms_5361_resize.png

We're greeted by a bunch of armed thugs.

ms_5386_resize.png

Can't we just talk things out, for once ?

parley.jpg

Tex1.png
They don't seem very reasonable folk...

Whatever. We answer their welcome with a barrage of bullets :

ms_5394_resize.png

I break into Professor Jones' laboratory and see him standing at the other end of the room. He's a man in his early 40's with glasses and hard grey eyes...

SamJones.png
How did you get past my security people ?

Tex1.png
I've given your security people the rest of their lives off. I'm afraid you'll have to start taking resumes again.

SamJones.png
What ? This can't be !

Deal_With_It_They_Live.gif

He looks shocked at first, but then he gives a convincing snarl.

SamJones.png
There's nothing for you here...

ms_5417_resize.png

SamJones.png
I will tell you nothing !

It seems it's time to chew gum and kick nazi scientist ass...

brofist.png

Miraculously, our [collar-grabbing] check passed !

Tex1.png
I'll air out that oversized skull of yours if I don't get the facts, NOW !

SamJones.png
Alright I'll tell you what I know, but it will do you no good. They'll find you and kill you.

Tex1.png
I'm flattered that you care about my well-being. Now start talking about Overlord !

SamJones.png
How did you find out about it ? I guess it doesn't matter, because it's almost operational. Through microchips and satellite monitoring stations, we can watch everyone, anywhere in the world.

Tex1.png
Tell me about Frank Schimming, what's his role in this ?

ms_5435_resize.png

So, he must be out of the loop ...

Tex1.png
What about Tom Griffith ?

SamJones.png
Tom hired me to work on Overlord through MTC. The plan will soon be in full operation.

Tex1.png
What's MTC's goal ?

SamJones.png
MTC will soon become one of the biggest most powerful corporations in history. We will spread throughout the world, and with the help of the Law and Order Party, we will control the destiny of the entire world.

Tex1.png
Yeah, I know all about your Law and Order pals. Now tell me where their leader, Robert Knott, is !

SamJones.png
I swear, I have no idea !

Tex1.png
All right, give me your passcard and password.

SamJones.png
Here. My password is "Queen".

Tex1.png
How fitting.

SamJones.png
You'll pay for this !

Tex1.png
I've paid my dues, Jones. The check... is in... the mail !

Okay, so we've gotten another passcard. We'd sure like to have a talk with Robert Knott, but he's a hard man to find. And we must be careful, Law and Order's hired killer is on our trail. For some reason this killer has a dame called Lola Lovetoy in his sights. We should find out why...

ms_5509_resize.png

Vanessa.png
Lola, what ? I'll need you to spell that big boy.

Tex1.png
*sigh* L-o-v-e-t-o-y. Just find her will ya ?

kiss.gif

ms_5522_resize.png

We'll leave Lola for later though. Our first priority is Greg Call's apartment.

ms_5527_resize.png

We're ambushed once more by L&O thugs. The try to stop us. They break, they rest in pieces.

ms_5537_resize.png

ms_5551_resize.png

Bah, nothing here, we already know the address of his lab. Nevertheless, we'll go back there again, since now we have the gloves...

ms_5566_resize.png

Tex1.png
A small shelf has been cut into the stalagmite... The purple passcard is here !

:yeah:

We already have his password: ROOK. Let's see what the dude has written in his nexus-blog :

ms_5588_resize.png

ms_5601_resize.png

Now, it's time have a chat with Lola and try to be her lovetoy.

ms_5625_resize.png

ms_5629_resize.png

I get a table near the front of the stage. I tell a waiter I need to see Ms. Lovetoy on an official matter. He slips behind the stage. A few moments later Ms. Lovetoy appears.

She saunters over to my table and sits down. She looks like the kind of woman you could score with, even if you played your cards wrong...

Now, let's see what's her connection with MTC...

ms_5665_resize.png

Lolalovetoy.png
Make it worth my time. I haven't got all day. $500.

Tex1.png
I just knew you were a nice girl, Lola. Here's the dough.

Lolalovetoy.png
Tom Griffith was interested in running MTC by himself. MTC and the Law and Order party are developing a project together and Griffith didn't want frank Schimming to know about it.

Tex1.png
And where do you come in ?

Lolalovetoy.png
He hired me to get "cozy" with Schimming and keep an eye on him. Griffith gave me the key to an apartment (NC 4605) where I was supposed to entertain Schimming.

Tex1.png
So, what can you tell me about Schimming ?

Lolalovetoy.png
The old guy was an egotistical bore who loved to talk about his favorite subject - himself. Several weeks ago I told Tom I was fed up with Schimming, and I called the arrangement off.

Tex1.png
Better lay low Lola. They're trying to cut off all the loose ends about this project and you're on their hit list.

Lolalovetoy.png
I know how to take care of myself, Murphy, but thanks for the warning.

We better check out that apartment :

ms_5719_resize.png

And, what a surprise, we get attacked by Law and order goons again.

ms_5755_resize.png

Once more, all they manage to do is fail miserably.

Star+Treck+Picard+applaud.gif

After the battle, I open the door of the apartment. This is where Lola Lovetoy brought Frank Schimming before she'd had enough. Looks like someone else has moved in...

ms_5762_resize.png

I wonder who's the new tenant. We search the dresser. Inside we find a box of matches. We open it and we get...

ms_5980_resize.png

Interesting. There's another item by the dresser :

ms_5774_resize.png

Whoa. Tex decides to... "taste" it...

ms_5777_resize.png

:negative:

There's also a jewelry box, but it's locked. We look at the mirror and a tired, haggard face of a down-on-his-luck P.I. looks back at us...

Tex1.png
Haggard, but in a charming way. Anyway, let's see if there's anything behind that mirror.

Tex knows futuristic security systems all too well, we uncover a button behind the mirror :

ms_5798_resize.png

Niiice. We turn our attention to the opened suitcase. In one of the shirts pockets we discover a note :

ms_5816_resize.png

We'll definitely get over there eventually. We glance at the suitcase's tag :

ms_5823_resize.png

Tex1.png
Not if I get you first.

So, the new resident is Big Jim ! We're getting closer to him.

On top of the table lies an Antique radio shack mood globe.

Tex1.png
It's late 20th century. Very valuable, worth at least 2000 dollars on the street !

We greedily try to grab it, forgetting the fact that it's covered by an electrical field :

ms_5830_resize.png

FUUUUUUU+copy.png

Let's try to control our thieving urges for now. There's a book on the table :

ms_5833_resize.png

Tex browses the pages with interest :

ms_5836_resize.png

Charming. We turn our gaze on the bed :

Tex1.png
Whoa. A Serta #717A Circular "Love" bed with red comforter.

There's a box lying on it :

ms_5850_resize.png

Tex1.png
Just put your lips together and blow...

ms_5854_resize.png

Al+bundy+is+extremely+happy+with+boobies.gif

"A plastic Woman in a polka dot bikini. She rates a 9.5. You seriously contemplate getting one for yourself, but decide that another one would just clutter the closet."

Tex suddenly feels a bit down. He grabs a bottle of liquor that's next to the bed :

ms_5884_resize.png

Then, we examine the painting on the wall.

ms_5893_resize.png

Tex has class :obviously: Naturally, we search for hidden switches behind the paintings, and we find one :

ms_5897_resize.png

We move on the desk on the right. Inside a binder we take note of another navigation code...

ms_5906_resize.png

Finally, we come across another piece of paper :

ms_5912_resize.png

Tex1.png
Confidential huh ? Now I know where you live, creep.

At last, we've found Robert Knott's --top man of Law and Order-- address! There's one name we don't know on the list, Harry Rice, we'll check him out later.

Relieved, we sit down and have a look at the TV/VCR. Suddenly, we remember we have a certain VHS tape in our possession :

ms_5934_resize.png

:D Surely it's the perfect place and time to sit back and relax...

ms_5941_resize.png
ms_5938_resize.png

Tex1.png
Nice visuals, but I prefer my porn to be of a more cerebral nature.

We wipe out the drool from our chin and we focus our attention on the secret panel we opened earlier. There's a button inside...

ms_5947_resize.png

Of course we wouldn't want to do that, but our finger slips and pushes the button. Since the damage is done we decide the best course of action is to pocket the mood globe.

ms_5961_resize.png

ALARM !

We've already found the alarm switch, so we deactivate it fast. Inside the case we find another small key. It opens the jewelry box. More valuables for us !

ms_5973_resize.png

We pawn the loot and get rich.

ms_5993_resize.png

Money, inflatable babes and top-heavy bimbos from Mars... We're living the life !

With renewed vigor we get back on track. There's a hired killer to find and a global conspiracy to unfold !

No sex androids in the future?
Lame.
Probably a money thing. Tex will eventually get the money to buy a broken sex-o-matic in pandora directive.

"Post-Nuclear". I think we're running out of things to be post. Unless this is like fallout and there was some big nuclear apocalypse in the world of Tex Murphy.

There wasn't a full blown apocalypse but there was a nuclear world war III. That's how the mutants were created.

wiki said:
The Third World War was disastrous. During the war, forest were burned, oceans polluted and half of the planet was damaged. Because of the radioactive fallout, a large minority of humans were mutated into genetically disfigured casualties, the Mutants.

Oh, right, freak town and everything.

So, how's the music in the game? I'm guessing that it's not great, since we're talking 1989.

Yeah nothing much. Basically sound effects, music is basically nonexistent. The only breakthrough in the audio comes form the few times the "pc speaker" is used for digitized speech. It's always nice to hear Vanessa say "Hello Tex !"

That's pretty good for 1989. Something similar, though more spectacular for the time, was to hear Devo's some things never change through the commodore 64:

Is there a literary counterpart to Tex Murphy? I mean in the sense of combining film noir with cyberpunk. Combining two genres isn't the most novel of ideas, but it's still kind of cool.

Well, cyberpunk is most of the time styled as futuristic noir, so I'd say quite a few.

For Hard boiled cyberpunk murder mystery look at Altered Carbon and for witty/humorous murder mystery/whatever look at Snow Crash. Voice of the Whirlwind is pretty good too.

Also have a look at this thread : http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/cyberpunk-novels.51954/

Lack of updates due to reconstruction of PCs and the installations that come after. All fixed now, the new update will be coming soon.

We're finally getting closer to Big Jim Slade. He's been sent by Law and Order to kill us, but he's got another thing coming. In his apartment we found a hit list :

Law and Order confidential hit list. Names not crossed off :
  • Harry Rice
  • Lola Lovetoy
  • Tex Murphy
  • Sonny Fletcher

Good job, Big Jim ! I need to talk to you. Come to my house at N.C. 0132 --Robert Knott.

"Confidential", my ass. Now we know that Robert Knott is giving the orders and we've got his address. Those bastards are getting sloppy and we'll be there to push them over the edge...

Code:
Chapter 8 :
____ _ _ ___ _ _ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____
|__| | | | |__| |___ |__| | |___ [__
| | |___ |___ | | | |___ | | |___ |___ ___]

Now, we should try to find the no1 guy on the hit list, Harry Rice.

ms_6000_resize.png

Vanessa1.png
Sorry Tex, There's nothing in our files.

Tex1.png
Great, Lee will fleece me.

ms_6020_resize.png

Tex1.png
What can you find about a certain individual called Harry rice ? And before you start charging a fortune, let me tell you I won't give you more than 100$ !

Lee.png
In that case, find him yourself.

Tex1.png
You think I can't do it ?! I've just installed this new WinDOS2000. It's just a matter of pushing a few buttons...

spock-star-trek-windows-bsod-animated-gif-best.gif

Tex1.png
Uh, how does $500 sound ?

Lee.png
I should charge you more for wasting my time. I'll send you a fax.

ms_6038_resize.png

Nevertheless, the queen bitch delivers :

ms_6043_resize.png

Harry Rice, here we come.

ms_6046_resize.png

ms_6054_resize.png

Damn, all that time and money down the drain. Let's visit the bus station where Big Jim stashed something in a locker :

ms_6058_resize.png

ms_6065_resize.png

YEAH, The black passcard ! And "KORO" can be anagrammed to "ROOK", another chess term for a password. Let's head to Clark's lab:

ms_6285_resize.png
ms_6300_resize.png

ms_6303_resize.png
ms_6307_resize.png

ms_6312_resize.png
ms_6313_resize.png

Nothing new here. Time to confront Robert Knott.

ms_6068_resize.png

The usual goon squad greets us.

ms_6084_resize.png

We obliterate them and move on :

ms_6093_resize.png

 I love it how these people throw armed thugs against Tex, Tex kills them all and then he simply proceeds to ask questions, only slightly irritated.

ms_6099_resize.png

The poster face of a duchebag. We have him at gun-point. Let's shake him down.

Tex1.png
You ordered Carl Lisnky's death, didn't you ?

knott.png
Linsky started to get wise to what was going on between MTC and Law and Order. I was ordered to have him bumped off, so we planted a microchip on him and hired Big Jim Slade to make sure he jumped off the bridge.

Tex1.png
Slade is your hired killer , huh ?

ms_6139_resize.png

Tex1.png
Tell me about Overlord.

knott.png
Overlord is the master plan to set up The Law and Order party as the legitimate ruling party of the world.

Tex1.png
And MTC will be getting all the commissions...

knott.png
MTC were the ones that came to us a year ago and proposed a joint venture an a project to rid the city of the Freaks. It sounded like a good plan, we were to handle "security", but as you can see now it's much more than that.

Tex1.png
Yeah, and you'll be on top of it all.

knott.png
I may appear to be the head of the party, but I just sit at the L.A. office (NC 5037) and wait for my orders. I'm just a puppet head, I don't call the shots !

Tex1.png
Is Tom Griffith the one who's pulling the strings ?

knott.png
Tom Griffith ? That little weasel isn't smart enough to get out of a paper bag. I bet he told you I was behind this mind control device. Well, I'm not mr. Big. I take orders just like he does.

ms_6136_resize.png

Tex1.png
Gideon ? what about th-

BANG

ms_6145_resize.png

ms_6146_resize.png

FUCK, Lithuanian hitmen on the loose !!! What now ? We get ready to get the hell out of here, when we receive a fax :

ms_6164_resize.png

Could it be a trap ?

shadowgate.png

Hmmm...

trappp.png

JC.png
A trap ?!

jock1.png
Oh my god JC, a trap.

It's a trap alright , but not for us ! They've trapped themselves by thinking they can trap us. Soon, they'll be falling into their own trap !

Tex1.png
Shut yer trapper and let's kick some ass.

Amen.

ms_6175_resize.png

We laugh at their feeble attempts of trying to shoot us down. Big Jim Slade is among them, but he's no match for our superior popamole skills.

ms_6191_resize.png

Adios amigo !

ms_6204_resize.png

Wait, how did we end up on the beach ? Not enough backgrounds I guess.

I notice he's smoking a Camel cigarette.
I walk up to him slowly, keeping my gun aimed at his heart.
Looking at him makes me wonder when I last received a rabies vaccination...

We demand answers.

ms_6215_resize.png

bigjimslade.png
Ya, Linsky... I got a call from Robert Knott at Law and Order to make sure he got to the bridge and took his dive.

Tex1.png
Just observing the process , huh ?

bigjimslade.png
They planted a small device on him and he turned into a robot. That's how all the jobs are done. I get a call, I do the job, and the money is transferred to my account. No names, no traces. It's real clean.

Tex1.png
Yeah, you're so clean, you're about to disappear, Slade. You offed Cal Davis too, didn't you ?

ms_6239_resize.png

Tex1.png
I saw my name in that hit list too.

bigjimslade.png
I was supposed to knock you off, you lousy two-bit shamus !

Tex1.png
And look how well that worked for you. Tell me about Law and Order.

ms_6252_resize.png

bigjimslade.png
Ughh...

Tex1.png
You don't look so hot, Slade.

bigjimslade.png
Thanks for caring. I've lost a large quantity of blood through several holes in my body and I really think I'm going to die.

Tex1.png
I'll leave you to it then.

ms_6254_resize.png

And that's the end of Big Jim... or is it ?

Anyway, It's about time we busted into Law and Order headquarters.

ms_6330_resize.png

Security tries to stop us.

ms_6344_resize.png

Broken thugs scatter on the floor.

ms_6353_resize.png

ms_6354_resize.png

We'll have to shut down the alarm...

ms_6358_resize.png

This one is tricky. But eventually, on the work station we find a switch :

ms_6367_resize.png

And inside the cabinet that opens, behind a hat, we uncover the alarm button...

Tex1.png
Give me a fucking break.

I think we've already established the fact that futuristic security is convoluted shit.
As we search around the room we come across an interesting letter :

ms_6384_resize.png

National holiday ? Not if we can help it... Inside the cabinet we find a memo :

ms_6398_resize.png

We take note of the new names and then listen to the tape on the answering machine...

ms_6410_resize.png

And we've taken care of Slade. We turn to examine the book case.

Tex1.png
Here's an interesting one : "An expert's guide to spite, malice and revenge".

:martini: The RPGCodex rulebook ?

ms_6435_resize.png

Cute. The tool box holds some treasures too :

ms_6464_resize.png

Tex1.png
There's also a Sears craftsman Turbo-Power drill and a large metal ball-peen hammer. On its handle are the words "Mutant masher".

We grab them both. Then we plunder their petty donations...

ms_6495_resize.png

And the plundering continues. Inside an expensive lavender overcoat, we find a combination :

ms_6507_resize.png

And what a surprise, behind the ugly picture we discover a safe. All their moneyz are belong to us.

And there's the gray nexus passcard here, too. The last of them !

:yeah:

Now we've got all the passcards ! All that remains is locating the main server and find out who is really behind all this, but that's not going to be an easy feat.

Off we go !

Isn't there too much popamole in this game, how high is the broken vases count?

But seriously, in easy mode it's... acceptable. Just don't go bounty hunting or try this in hard mode.

You mean Agents of shield. right ? I was going to say she's too young for this, but then I saw her date of birth... 1963

:what:

She could very well be the same, they look alike.

Mean Streets! I remember playing that on the 64. I tried being a bitch to everyone in the game, and laughed hard when that fat lady knocked me out.
