As some of you know, I am somewhat of an AGEOD whore. This summer, I will be trying to complete my first campaign as the Whites in Revolution Under Siege. This will be as the Southern Whites.

This isn't the vanilla game, however. Clovis, an AGEOD modder of some notoriety, has for years developing a mod called Fatal Years. It touches nearly every aspect of the game from the AI to the map. He has mysteriously vanished, yet, not before I saved his most recent version.

Throughout the game, I will try to explain each mechanism as it arises. This mod makes the Whites MUCH harder to win. The longer this campaign goes, the stronger the Reds become. I've yet to see a White victory so this should be fun.

After the following background, I won't LARP too much unless requested. There's a lot to cover.

Background

The Red Terror that has swept over our beautiful land! Thousands of our fellow citizens brutally murdered by the so-called 'People's' government. What's worse, they are granting independence to minorities in the Empire. Like vampires, the Bolsheviks are sucking the life out of Russia.

Yet there is hope...

kornilov.jpg

General Kornilov, having escaped from the clutches of the Bolsheviks in Petrograd, achieved one of the most remarkable military campaigns in history. The Ice March.

Pursued by the Red Horde, Kornilov and his skeleton force composed of officers made their way toward the Kuban, the land of the Cossacks, who recently declared themselves hostile to the Soviet. Having won their trust, the Ataman agreed to an alliance to save Mother Russia.

Many died in the cold, yet many pressed on knowing that God was on their side.

icemarch.jpg

In a twist of fate, General Kornilov was killed in the attack against Ekaterinodar. The Bolsheviks then committed the most ghastly of crimes by digging up his body and lighting it on fire in a garbage heap.

Lenin boasts that the Counter-Revolution is over.

He couldn't be more wrong. It has only yet begun....

To arms, Sons of Russia!
To arms, Sons of the Don!
Russia needs you!

Let us begin

pHjWFwJ.png

Here are the game's objectives. There are a couple of ways to achieve victory.

  1. Victory Points
    • Gained by holding objective cities
    • Winning battles
  2. National Morale
    • Complete annihilation of the enemy in combat
    • Taking Objective Cities (NM award are shown in parentheses next to objectives)
You can see the situation at the beginning of the game below. In the interest of keeping this from getting too wieldy, this AAR will only concern the Southern Whites unless shit goes south (pun intended) or if the Siberians get interesting early. I'll keep you guys updated on that front.

Lgp4epm.png

THE SITUATION

Our objective to secure Ekaterinodar, Stavrolpol, and Novorossisk as soon as possible. Destruction of the Red Army of the Caucasus is secondary.

Seizing the ports will provide an excellent location for assistance from the Allied Powers, who are trying to topple the Bolsheviks and restore Russia to its senses.

Everything west of the Don is occupied by the Germans, so no operations can be taken there. For now.

NWGTdV8.png

The ultimate objective is, of course, Tsaritsyn. It controls the road in and out of Central Russia and the Volga. Taking it will open the door to Russia and choke Astrakhan from the Red Army.

EpggJlo.png

Below, is the supply overlay. This game is as much about logistics as it is on warfare. If I don't plan correctly, a successful drive toward Moscow can fall flat on its face without any resistance.
  • Green = Regions under White control
  • Light Green = Depots.
    • VERY IMPORTANT. These areas dish out supply and ammunition to my forces within a few regions. Possessing a strong supply chain to forward areas is vital.
DxnzFiO.png

Major cities often produce bonus resources that are added each turn they are in your control. Ekaterinodar is one such city. The Southern Whites have a horrible a horrible amount of $$ and War Supplies so control of these cities is paramount.

No War Supplies, no artillery and tanks.

Here is the terrain of the Caucasus. Flat as can be with stepped dominating the east toward Astrakhan. Supply will be difficult if we decide to go that route.

The forests and mountains down south are scarcely populated. I assume the Reds will retreat there if necessary to avoid my cavalry.

Z3KyRU6.png

The Plan

The Volunteer Army, under General Denikin, finds the road to the south barred by the Red Army of the Caucasus, led by Red Cossack General Kalnin.

Fortunately, Kalnin is an incompetent general who is often at odds with Petrograd. Too busy fighting amongst themselves, the Volunteer army will attempt to take them by surprise before they realize what hit them.

Meanwhile, the Cossacks under Ataman Krasnov will be concerned with something a little more daring.

8IFxNmG.png

To ensure maximum damage, the Volunteer Army will detach several forces.

The Volunteer Army will make it's way across the Manych River and take Salsk, continuing on to cut off Kalnin's Army from the rear.

Meanwhile, Pokrovsky will lead a large mounted forced to Stavropol. Capturing it will allow us to begin requisitions for supply and conscripts.

xa2QtHe.png

The Cossacks will make a break for Tsaritsyn, before it can be supplied with reinforcements.

Leading the way is General Mamontov, to secure the railways before the Reds can sabotage them. Quick access to reinforcements will be essential to success.

8xmJDvR.png

Following in his wake will be the main Cossack force, under General Sorokin. The total force around 25k men with little cannon.

O5VImwm.png

This is a crazy gamble that could backfire in a big way since they are uncertain allies who often don't follow orders. Attacking the city so early, however, will panic Trotsky and force him to send divisions on the Siberian Front to us, allowing our allies in Siberia an opportunity.

Action

Forces make their way into the Caucasus...

Elitsa is taken without a fight by one of my cavalry brigades, ensuring a nice vantage point for any Reds fleeing the massacre that is to come.

fTtATS7.png

Pokrovsky's attack on Stavropol is a rousing success. The town is ours.

8IFA9Zm.png

The stage has been set.

As you can see, there is another force of Reds south of the Volunteer Army. This is Kalnin, a General that is constantly shit on by his superior Sorokin.

While we are sandwiched between them, we have the upper hand due to their constant bickering. They'd rather see eachother destroyed than help the other.

The Cossacks advance slowly, soon the showdown in Tsaritsyn will begin...

I believe Clovis has an alt on the AGEOD Forum. There was some sort of drama there that made him quit.

[These screenies were made before I began to have more detailed shots, so bare with me]

The Situation

As his troops prepare the inevitable clash against the Reds, General Denikin consults his stavka on the procurement of resources in the long-term.

The Southern Whites control very little, at the moment, and consist of around 45k men, including the Cossacks. Not even the most glorious of armies could take Moscow with such numbers. Thus, steps must be taken to ensure the Volunteer Army grows into a force capable of ending the Bolshevik cloud that hovers over Russia.

General Pokrovsky's valiant assault against Stavropol, has provided an excellent base of operations for controlling the surrounding region.

hineEJi.png

The cavalry commander quickly puts in motion efforts to scour the countryside for supplies and ammunition. Luckily, the population is sentimental to our Cause and understand the measures that must be taken to ensure victory.

Requisitions will take months to complete, so Pokrovsky's brigade must maintain their position until reinforcements can free up his men for further operations. Any loss of time will be catastrophic.

Meanwhile, up north, Denikin's orders are to proceed at once with the attack on Sorokin's Red Army at Zernograd. Once the battle is over, the Army will make it's way back to Salsk in preparation for a strike at Kalnin's Army.

If successful, the liberation of
Ekaterinador and the Caucasus will be achieved within a month.

B7vq75m.png

The Don Army makes it way toward Tsaritsyn. A detached force of Cossacks from Mikhailovka have been fighting their way behind enemy lines quite successfully, even defeating a large force of Red Guards.

Sensing an opportunity, Ataman Krasnov sends orders the detached force to occupy the Tsaritsyn-Voronezh rail line, severing the city from reinforcements.

FL3qRhT.png

Sidorin's Corps will advance just south of Tsaritsyn, securing the rail line back south in case reinforcements will be needed. The Reds, under a savvy commander by the name of Stalin, will not let Tsaritsyn go without a massive relief force so we expect their strongest punch. Our hopes rest with the strength and honor of the Cossack nation.

Throwing the Dice
The Volunteer Army reaches Zernograd....

HQWERQO.png

and Sorokin gone! Save a few stragglers, there is no sign of his Red Horde. Despite our best efforts to extract Sorokin's whereabouts from the bolshevik scum, we only learned that Sorokin's Army had split into several forces.

In exchange for their information, Denikin put them against the wall and had them shot.

2yrTNpO.png

It appears that Sorokin is not completely stupid.

Knowing full well his inability to face Denkin head-on, Sorokin dispersed his forces throughout the Caucasus in an effort to delay the White advance until help could arrive from the north.

Unfortunately, for him, he does not know that even now the Cossacks are racing toward Tsaritsyn.

R5jaxGL.png

All roads leading to Tsaritsyn are now operated by the Whites.

sLhNuM4.png

God Willing, Sorokin and the rest of his communist pigs will never see their precious Revolution again.

The Plan

For a moment, High Command ponders on asking the Germans for assistance. While this help us greatly in the short-term, with the arrival of the Americans in Europe, Denikin does not believe the Germans can be victorious.

The Allies have been with us since the beginning and we should honor their loyalty. Once Germany is defeated, they will come to our aid, assuredly!

F1RRFf0.png

In the rear, General Lukomsky continues efforts to train conscripts. Quality is the White's main advantage of the Bolsheviks. We must strive to maintain that excellence at all costs! A Cossack cavalry division will be necessary to quickly gain military control of the surrounding region, as well.

Cs5wWLN.png

Somewhat concerning is the blockading of the Don Esutary by Red ships. We were fortunate to transfer the Cossack army before they arrived, else they would be useless.

Hd79olU.png

A number of fleeing Reds had the balls to attack Azov but were surprised to find Cossack garrisons waiting for them. I hope they like standing.

fvdgfdtghf.jpg

In preparation for the assault on Tsaritsyn, preventing it's reinforcement is the primary concern. A detachment of soldiers move north of the city with the intent of severing the rail line between it and the rest of Russia.

XxSLOAu.png

Reconnaissance finally gives us an idea of what we're facing. It doesn't look good. It appears that the city has been heavily fortified by Stalin in preparation of an early attack. The Red Verdun, as he calls it, has already put up a complex level of trenches aimed at keeping the Cossacks out. Nevertheless, it's too late to turn back now. This will make victory even more glorious for forces of Good!

RUSSIAN-CIVIL.jpg

uYmPC4G.png

Ataman Krasnov has split the army into two Corps. One, under Denisov, will move to east of the city to cover Sidorin's approach to Tsaritsyn. A quick victory followed by a long siege is the plan. Cutting off the city will grant the Southern Whites the temporary luxury of being able to send more reinforcements to the front than the Reds can cope with.

In the Caucasus, Denikin's Army prepares for its move on Ekaterinodar, the provincial capital. The scattered Reds will be no match for his seasoned troops. Pokrovsky's cavalry will maintain position in order regain cohesion and supplies for further operations deep in enemy territory and to watch for any fleeing Bolsheviks.

yZZ0Yyb.png

The upcoming battles will see many dead. We shall pray to God to see our men through for the Cause of Right and Justice and Russia.

The Operation

Ld9wLtB.png

Mitrophan_Grekov_31.jpg

The fighting is fierce but Kranov's men are able to drive the Bolsheviks back onto Tsaritsyn. The price may be too much, however. Stalin's trenches shower the Cossacks with an impressive amount of artillery.

EyAObNy.png

Denikin's men make their way for Ekaterinodar

z9bcON9.png

The Volunteer Army washes away the Bolshevik filth with ease. The Red bastards die to the last man.

ISgjMlO.png

Ekaterinodar has been liberated! A triumphant march through the city is greeted by the multitudes.

The Cossack Army's situation is not as good as we hoped, however. What's worse, there are rumors of disagreement between High Command and Ataman Krasnow. Surely, in such a delicate moment these egos can be put aside....else our road to Moscow may end at Tsaritsyn.

News of sorrow comes to us from the Whites in Siberia. The Bolsheviks, in their panic of the oncoming advance of the Whites, committed the most abhorrent of crimes in Ekaterinburg...

Fi7XJxq.png

Even the children were not spared. The once-great family that ruled Old Russia has faded into oblivion. Opinions among the ranks range from sorrow to indifference. The Romanovs may not have been popular, but no one deserves their fate, especially the children.

God Willing, we will right the wrongs and bring salvation to Russia.

With the recent taking of Ekaterinador, high Command has deemed it the provisional capital for our government.

MGSfRNw.png

With the destruction of the Red Army around Ekaterinodar, the path toward the Baltic Sea is laid open before us. The Tsaritsyn Campaign, however, looks incredibly grim.

0rvzFsa.png

IGTTz34.png

Denikin pleads with the Cossacks to abandon the costly attack, despite driving the Red Army back toward Tsaritsyn's gates. Ataman Krasnov, full of pride, refuses to listen.

I23C4S8.png

The Cossacks have decided to press the attack at all costs.

XQD39Ve.png

Denikin does not have much hope for the survival of the Don Army. Newly trained Cossacks are rushed to protect the rail lines from Red saboteurs. Until Krasnov sees the stupidity in his ways, maintaining a lifeline to the the Cossacks is of utmost importance!

wvST0wx.png

At least, we hope...

News reaches us yet again from abroad on the creation of the Directory, an effort by the Siberian Whites to coordinate efforts between the various entities making up their armies. We commend their efforts and wish them luck. Our fates are intertwined.

61QIlB1.png

Denikin's Volunteer Army begins its advance on to the Black sea, with the final destination of Novorossiysk. Our cavalry on the Kuban will continue to hunt down any Bolshevik scum running on the steppes. A red force under Zhoba hold the pass to the South. We will allow him that position, for the time being. Their time will soon come.

rOD7Opo.png

All goes smoothly...the White Wolves' quickly deal with a roving band of Red Deserters near the Kuban. Pokrovsk'y cavalry secure the lines in front of Zhoba, pressuring his force to retire to the mountains.

dJTGSQF.png

Of course, with good news comes bad. Word reaches us from Tsaritsyn about the recent battle.

AVb9kL1.png

Another phyrric victory for the Cossacks. 4,000 men dead! And for what? If this keeps up there will be no Don Army left to attack!

4Pr2xki.png

The nefarious Cossack Ataman has again refused to withdraw! He will be the end of us unless something is done quickly to remove him from power. Will it before the Cossacks are completely destroyed outside Tsaritsyn, though?
