Oh, okay... ...damn, but then we're out of dragons for some time. I don't know what to vote for!

Hm did we kill illithids? No? Then I vote those.

Vote for illithids. Because why fight with one jerk when you can meet more. Or whatever...

I don't even remember how you can protect yourself from illithid mind blasts without Chaotic Commands.

The Green Amulet that you can find in the beholder tunnels in the Underdark. I think Lilarcor will also protect you from it. They can still INT drain you though.

They can still INT drain you though.

Their INT drain works even against Skeleton Warriors. :)

I seem to remember you can acquire some sort of permanent mental shield in Watcher's Keep (during the card game), but I don't know if it works against mind blast.

Update #31: In The Shadows, part I - Shady Deal

bg2_up31_000.jpg

The endless search for fortune and glory leads our hero to the Temple District in Athkatla.

codex_10.jpg
Do I have a say in this? I should have a say in this.

You don't.

bg2_up31_001.jpg

Guardian Telwyn starts explaining what is expected of us. If you care about the details, check the spoiler tag.

bg2_up31_002.jpg

bg2_up31_003.jpg

bg2_up31_004.jpg

bg2_up31_005.jpg

Our next stop is Government District.

codex_10.jpg
Uhm... why?

We need to employ the services of a certain artist for the temple.

codex_10.jpg
'k

bg2_up31_006.jpg

Entering the Jysstev estate we are greeted by a friendly butler. More plot under the spoiler tag.

bg2_up31_007.jpg

bg2_up31_008.jpg

bg2_up31_009.jpg

bg2_up31_010.jpg

Time to head to Waukeen's Promenade then, to get illithium (I wonder if it has anything to do with illithids).

bg2_up31_011.jpg

Jerlia does not seem happy to see our hero.

codex_10.jpg
What else is new.

More dialogue ahead. The tl;dr version is we have to go somewhere else. Yes, it's that kind of quest.

bg2_up31_012.jpg

bg2_up31_013.jpg

bg2_up31_014.jpg

bg2_up31_015.jpg

bg2_up31_016.jpg

Our next destination is the Copper Coronet in the Slums.

bg2_up31_017.jpg

Unger Hilldark supposedly has access to the illithium we need. Check the spoiler tag to know why exactly he does not. It seems that a longer trip is in order.

bg2_up31_018.jpg

bg2_up31_019.jpg

bg2_up31_020.jpg

bg2_up31_021.jpg

bg2_up31_022.jpg

The Codex is in his prime, so no danger is too dangerous for him.

bg2_up31_023.jpg

He is a capable fighter, a master thief and a gifted mage.

bg2_up31_024.jpg

bg2_up31_026.jpg

More than resistant to hostile magic and skilled in using many a tool of war.

bg2_up31_027.jpg

Firkraag took the throne as our fattest kill, replacing puzzle boss Kangaxx.

bg2_up31_028.jpg

Temple Ruins were available for us to explore for some time now, but we had no real reason to go there until now.

bg2_up31_029.jpg

During the travel, we are waylaid by our favourite group of cloned bandits.

bg2_up31_030.jpg

They are barely worth mentioning at this point.

bg2_up31_031.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Kind of dark in here. I must have crossed the border with Mordor at some point.

Someone named Lellyn dies the moment we enter the map.

codex_10.jpg
Who is, or rather was, she?

No idea either.

bg2_up31_032.jpg

If anyone is curious about Lellyn's identity, she dropped her journal. The contents are hidden under the spoiler tag.

bg2_up31_033.jpg

bg2_up31_034.jpg

bg2_up31_035.jpg

bg2_up31_036.jpg

But we're not here to read journals, but to kill Shade Wolves!

codex_10.jpg
Finally, some action!

bg2_up31_037.jpg

We promptly do just that.

bg2_up31_039.jpg

We also kill this Shadow.

bg2_up31_040.jpg

Each successful hit by a Shadow temporarily drains our hero's strength. It is not a problem when fighting a single one, but can become one if they are in groups.

bg2_up31_042.jpg

Obviously, there are a lot of Shadows here.

bg2_up31_044.jpg

codex_10.jpg
As long as they can be killed with a forceful appliance of a stick to the head, I don't care if they are shadows, rainbows or clouds.

bg2_up31_046.jpg

Shade Wolves. They are shadows too... but shaped as wolves!

bg2_up31_048.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Are these the only two types of enemies, I am going to meet here?

Yes.

bg2_up31_049.jpg

Obviously, I spoke to soon.

codex_10.jpg
If this thing starts regenerating, I am leaving.

bg2_up31_050.jpg

Nothing like that happens, though.

bg2_up31_051.jpg

Finally, we reach some kind of architecture.

bg2_up31_052.jpg

Obviously it's crawling with Shadows.

bg2_up31_053.jpg

codex_10.jpg
They are almost appearing faster than I can kill them.

bg2_up31_054.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Almost.

bg2_up31_055.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey, check out this light. It's almost as dim as you.

bg2_up31_056.jpg

Obviously, there are more Shadows here.

bg2_up31_057.jpg

And a lot of them too.

codex_10.jpg
Some challenge at last!

bg2_up31_058.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Scratch that last sentence.

bg2_up31_059.jpg

After killing YET ANOTHER SHADOW...

bg2_up31_060.jpg

...we finally check out the light.

bg2_up31_061.jpg

There is also this pane nearby.

bg2_up31_062.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I think that did something.

bg2_up31_063.jpg

Every shadow that gets close to the crystal is instantly fragged. The bad thing is we don't get XP for that.

bg2_up31_064.jpg

Moving on to encounter yet another shadow.

bg2_up31_065.jpg

And another one...

bg2_up31_066.jpg

...and a Shade Wolf...

bg2_up31_067.jpg

...and another Shade Wolf...

codex_10.jpg
Wow, this is probably the most boring update ever! And I don't mean just in this LP!

bg2_up31_068.jpg

At some point we find a cave.

codex_10.jpg
Is it called Cave of Shadows or some shit like this?

I don't think it is called anything.

codex_10.jpg
Fine, let's give it some benefit of doubt and check it out.

bg2_up31_069.jpg

Inside there is... nothing.

bg2_up31_070.jpg

Except some minor loot.

bg2_up31_071.jpg

And I mean minor.

bg2_up31_072.jpg

I think we used to drink that in college.

codex_10.jpg
That explains a lot.

bg2_up31_073.jpg

Finally being done with the area, we greet the entrance to the temple with joy and relief.

bg2_up31_074.jpg

codex_10.jpg
At first glance, it's not much of an improvement.

bg2_up31_075.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, case closed, I think.

bg2_up31_076.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let's just find this illithium guy and be done with it, shall we?

bg2_up31_077.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh, joy, shade wolves.

bg2_up31_078.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh fuck! Oh fuck! Look, skeleton warriors!

I see them, don't piss yourself with joy.

bg2_up31_079.jpg

codex_10.jpg
They are actually able to hurt me! A proper challenge! Glorious!

bg2_up31_080.jpg

We even had to use one healing potion. Truly hardcore.

bg2_up31_081.jpg

Cleaning up some leftovers.

bg2_up31_082.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ok, what the fuck is that?

bg2_up31_083.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I will have one hell of a time explaining myself if I am caught with this in my inventory.

bg2_up31_084.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck, you can't throw a bone without hitting a shadow in here.

bg2_up31_085.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What master? What consort? Is the dwarf guy we are looking for actually a dwarf gal?

Just ignore him.

bg2_up31_086.jpg

And by 'ignore' I obviously mean 'kill'.

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, I got that.

bg2_up31_087.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Done.

bg2_up31_088.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And done.

bg2_up31_089.jpg

codex_10.jpg
The jailor dropped something.

bg2_up31_090.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, I get it, it's SHADOW EVERYTHING in here.

bg2_up31_091.jpg

There was this one time when the key did not drop (or maybe I lost it?) and poor Mazzy was left in her cell for eternity (or at least until ToB).

bg2_up31_092.jpg

I really like Mazzy, she's an awesome archer and her paladin-wannabe abilities don't hurt either. Great addition to any good-aligned party.

Check the whole conversation if you want.

bg2_up31_093.jpg

bg2_up31_094.jpg

bg2_up31_095.jpg

bg2_up31_096.jpg

bg2_up31_097.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'm not much into midgets, so good luck on the road.

bg2_up31_098.jpg

codex_10.jpg
There's some paper lying here.

bg2_up31_099.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Half of an incomprehensible journal. Always wanted one of these.

bg2_up31_100.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Amaunator... Amaunator. I've heard this name before, I think?

Yeah, he was that god from that temple under the sewers.

codex_10.jpg
Oh, yeah, now I remember.

You do?

codex_10.jpg
Yes, of course... It was when... With that thing with the... The quest about... ...Alright, FINE. I have no idea what you're talking about. Can we move on now?

bg2_up31_101.jpg

The ritual can be figured out pretty easily without any aids, but we are going to do it the proper way.

codex_10.jpg
The 'proper' way being the long way, of course?

Yup.
---

Next time: More shadows!

codex_10.jpg
Nooooooo!

That is some admirable consistency, but You don't have to repeat Your vote if it is already listed.

I had absolutely no idea Hilldark sends you to the Temple of Shadows if you annoy him too much.

I guessed it was a mod thing since there is one non accessible storage on that shadow temple above ground map in vanilla game and hints in the dungeon say, that it's supposed to have illithium in it. Good for people playing for first time, that would have no clue that they probably should keep it for upgrading mace of disruption, since that temple quest can be concluded with the fake illithium.

I'll throw in a vote for the Keep.

Update #32: In The Shadows, part II - Level-scaling Bullshit

bg2_up32_000.jpg

We start on a very familiar note.

bg2_up32_001.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I don't think I can take this much longer.

bg2_up32_002.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Sure, seems like a great idea.

bg2_up32_003.jpg

Shadows incoming!

codex_10.jpg
No shit. I thought they were just very dark bunnies.

bg2_up32_004.jpg

Suddenly we are in deep sh-...-adows.

codex_10.jpg
You are so funny it hurts behind my eyes.

bg2_up32_005.jpg

The shadows keep coming and coming...

bg2_up32_006.jpg

In the end, The Codex emerges victorious, as is usual.

bg2_up32_008.jpg

Although drained to the point of not being able to move with normal speed, due to strength loss and encumbrance.

bg2_up32_007.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Nice, hopefully I can sell it for loads and loads of cash.

Like you need any more money.

codex_10.jpg
Who said anything about needing it?

bg2_up32_009.jpg

Move along, nothing to see here.

bg2_up32_010.jpg

codex_10.jpg
There sure is a lot of paper in this dungeon.

It's probably more like parchment.

codex_10.jpg
What's the difference?

It is made of dead animals instead of dead trees.

bg2_up32_011.jpg

codex_10.jpg
'Morn' ritual? That Morn?

bg2_up32_012.jpg

I think they just mean 'morning'.

codex_10.jpg
Disappointing.

bg2_up32_013.jpg

Oh, look, it's a Shade Wolf!

codex_10.jpg
Arghglfblbhnmsmftk.

bg2_up32_014.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh fuck, man, I really hope you are that dwarf I am looking for.

bg2_up32_015.jpg

He is.

codex_10.jpg
:yeah:

Check the conversation if You want.

bg2_up32_016.jpg

bg2_up32_017.jpg

bg2_up32_018.jpg

That does not mean we are finished here, though. Having gotten this far we might as well explore the rest of the temple, so let's do that.

codex_10.jpg
Why do you hate me so much?

bg2_up32_019.jpg

Our Sun Gem allowed us to pass through the first of these walls (it was done offscreen, sorry). But it does not seem to work on this one - maybe because I put it into a container (wolfskin bag)?

bg2_up32_020.jpg

We try the side route instead and are imemdiately ambushed.

codex_10.jpg
One monster is hardly an ambush.

bg2_up32_021.jpg

How about three?

codex_10.jpg
Let me think...

bg2_up32_022.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Nope, still not an ambush.

bg2_up32_023.jpg

There is a lava carpet here, that hurts to walk on.

codex_10.jpg
I expected to instantly be charred into organic ash, so a few points of damage is no big deal.

bg2_up32_024.jpg

A skeleton warrior awaits us on the other side.

codex_10.jpg
I'll take anything that's not a shadow.

bg2_up32_025.jpg

Will you take a lich and two greater mummies?

codex_10.jpg
Fuck yeah!

bg2_up32_026.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Finally a proper fight.

bg2_up32_027.jpg

The lich casts Time Stop... and does nothing while it lasts. Great AI there.

bg2_up32_028.jpg

codex_10.jpg
All this blood loss has reminded me that greater mummies were not exactly pushovers when I met them before.

bg2_up32_029.jpg

That is some scary level scaling there.

Death Count: 176

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
Let's do some kiting, shall we?

bg2_up32_030.jpg

We invite one skeleton warrior first.

bg2_up32_031.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Mwahahahaha, bonedust!

bg2_up32_032.jpg

We are starting to experience inventory space problem.

bg2_up32_033.jpg

The Codex is greeted by an explosion of magic. Luckily, it does nothing except looking pretty.

bg2_up32_034.jpg

We lure away the other skeleton warrior.

bg2_up32_035.jpg

Which is quickly taken care of.

bg2_up32_036.jpg

Only the hard part left.

bg2_up32_037.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Mommy! There are monsters behind the door!

Fuck.

bg2_up32_038.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Mommy! For some reason I thought it would be great idea to run into the room with the monsters!

bg2_up32_039.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Mommy! The monsters took my arms! How am I going to eat now!?

bg2_up32_040.jpg

I think I prefered the shadows.

Death Count: 177

Load.

codex_10.jpg
I want you to edit out everything I said after being hit with that spell.

Ok, consider it done.

codex_10.jpg
You'll do it?

Sure, no problem.

codex_10.jpg
...

codex_10.jpg
Good.

bg2_up32_041.jpg

Guess what spell we have prepared just in case.

bg2_up32_042.jpg

The screenshot above is missing one greater mummy lured out of the death room, through the lava carpet.

bg2_up32_043.jpg

codex_10.jpg
A-HA!

bg2_up32_044.jpg

We lure out the other mummy, while ignoring the shenanigans of the lich.

bg2_up32_045.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Go back to the Halloween party you escaped from!

bg2_up32_046.jpg

Time for the main course. We are off to a good start when Sunfire cast by the lich only affects the enemy.

bg2_up32_047.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You should know that The Codex is immune to banshee's wailing.

bg2_up32_048.jpg

After the lich reveals itself (Mislead made it invisible), our hero starts hitting it with his stick.

bg2_up32_049.jpg

codex_10.jpg
That anti-magic belt was a good investment.

bg2_up32_050.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck you! Seriously, FUCK YOU!

bg2_up32_051.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And he summoned an efreeti. Fucking great.

bg2_up32_052.jpg

For some reason these efreeti always manage to inflict more damage than the liches themselves.

bg2_up32_053.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Stop going invisible on me, or I will start cheesing my staff to do the same!

Liches see the invisible.

codex_10.jpg
Fuck!

bg2_up32_054.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I've had enough! Meet my own efreeti, bitches!

The lich keeps induling in degenerate gameplay and casting instadeath spells. Luckily our hero is all but immune to them.

bg2_up32_055.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Now that's more like it!

bg2_up32_056.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And stay the fuck underground!

bg2_up32_057.jpg

Despite his master being dead (well, *more* dead), the efreeti keeps giving us trouble.

bg2_up32_058.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I swear, if he does that again, I am going to punch a baby panda.

bg2_up32_059.jpg

'Efreeti does 3 damage to Efreeti.' Well, that's descriptive.

bg2_up32_060.jpg

codex_10.jpg
:rage:

bg2_up32_061.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Here, let me prepare a little surprise for when he comes back.

bg2_up32_062.jpg

I think your efreeti just got unsummoned.

codex_10.jpg
Fucking discount magical items.

bg2_up32_063.jpg

codex_10.jpg
No, no, no, no NOONONONONO! FUUUUUCK!

bg2_up32_064.jpg

codex_10.jpg
:yeah:

Somehow this feels more satisfying than killing Firkraag.

codex_10.jpg
Yes. Well, almost.

bg2_up32_065.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'm guessing that if I touch it, a giant boulder will start rolling after me.

bg2_up32_066.jpg

codex_10.jpg
More paper. Parchment. Whatever.

bg2_up32_067.jpg

bg2_up32_068.jpg

Some local propaganda.

bg2_up32_069.jpg

bg2_up32_070.jpg

Another ritual.

bg2_up32_071.jpg

codex_10.jpg
That's actually pretty cool, but they don't specify if it is a baby or an adult wyvern.

I have no idea either.

bg2_up32_072.jpg

*ding*

bg2_up32_073.jpg

That should be highlighted in red.

bg2_up32_074.jpg

Never hurts to have another wand, except we are really out of inventory space by this point.

bg2_up32_075.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I knew carrying a child's corpse will get me into trouble.

Check the history lesson below.

bg2_up32_076.jpg

bg2_up32_077.jpg

bg2_up32_078.jpg

bg2_up32_079.jpg

bg2_up32_080.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I don't think I care about anything they've just said.

bg2_up32_082.jpg

We got this thing.

bg2_up32_081.jpg

And this one.

codex_10.jpg
Shadow Dragon? You haven't mentioned any dragons before.

I haven't? Well, there is one here.

codex_10.jpg
Color me interested, then. Which way do we go?

Oh, you've got to be kidding me.

bg2_up32_084.jpg

This lich does not seem any more intelligent than the first one and also wastes his time stop for nose-picking.

That's a fuckload of undead. Hopefully this choke point here will give me some needed advatage.

codex_10.jpg
So far so good.

bg2_up32_087.jpg

Should have renewed that Stoneskin after all.

Death Count: 178

Load game.

codex_10.jpg
That was a disappointing conclusion to that combat.

bg2_up32_088.jpg

We use the skeleton warrior as an ad-hoc roadblock to pound the greater mummy from outside its range.

bg2_up32_089.jpg

Works pretty well.

Mwahahahaha, bonedust!

Somehow the 'bone dust' is blood-colored, but whatever.

codex_10.jpg
Come on, you won't get me this time!

bg2_up32_092.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck, it's getting me! It's getting me!

Don't panic. One more hit and it's down.

bg2_up32_093.jpg

codex_10.jpg
YES!

bg2_up32_094.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And you too.

Let's kill it fast, before it gets ideas and summons an efreeti.

bg2_up32_096.jpg

codex_10.jpg
'k

bg2_up32_097.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ah, burns!

bg2_up32_098.jpg

codex_10.jpg
:rage:

Let's just withdraw a bit. Before the lich catches up, its immunity should wear off.

What do you know, it actually worked.

LGRDA UBOIS NLIAQ DPUNE IVBUI SAMAM YXGFA. I don't get it.

We need to use the 'name of the master'.

codex_10.jpg
But Master did not have a name, or rather 'Master' *was* his name.

Not *that* master.

codex_10.jpg
There is another?

You know what, let's just finish up for today and figure it out next time.

Next time: The not-so-epic finale of this quest, and the other quest.

Sounds exciting, except not.

Liches ? Wow ! I don't think the undeads I met there were ever worse than bone golems.

Fear spells seem to be one of the weak points of our hero ! It's quite annoying how "fleeing" in BG2 actually just means running around at random (almost always greatly increasing the likelihood that the PC will get killed).

They're the highest-tier spawn for the undead table of scaled encounters. SCS2 has an option to bump up what is spawned for the player, beyond what their actual level would predict and most options exclude the undead table solely for the liches, which are mostly unbeatable by lower-level parties given the enormous AI modifications liches greatly benefit from. Even the heavily nerfed lich in Edwin's quest becomes incredibly difficult.

Does the Codex have anything to protect from level drain? The shadow dragon breath weapon is pretty nasty to multi-class characters (though not as much as dual-classed ones).

I definitely have seen liches in that themple, since I had to level up a bit last time I tried to kill the shadow dragon. I think fixpack beefed him up or something and I do not like to cheese fights.
