Update #49: Searching For Sanity In All The Wrong Places, part I - Riddle Me This
That magic resistance dropping to 50% is annoying as fuck, to be honest.
Do you smell that?
Smell what?
It comes from this room.
Uhm, look out for the golem.
It seems that Carsomyr is not as ultimate a weapon as we have always thought.
Good thing I've brought my stick too.
I am strangely drawn to that trapped basket.
What is it...? It's beautiful...
Oh, yes... Oooooh, yeeees!
I feel like I need a cigarette now.
Sorry, no rest for the wicked and those trying to prove their sanity while being pursued by vampires.
A roguestone? I already like this place.
I wonder which color turns you gay. Or do you have to be hit by all of them at once?
Less homophobia, more scribing.
And we also found this. Luckily, as of three screenshots ago we are officially beyond getting annoyed by picking up quest items.
This is one huge trap.
Well, that was semi-unexpected.
Death Count: 213
Load game.
What the fuck!? I mean it. WHAT. THE. FUCK.
That trap is either extremely hard or simply impossible to disarm. You will have to go around it.
Fucking fuck of fucking fuckers.
I hate to repeat myself, but: what the fuck?
Story shit. Just ignore it.
Oh no, we must have brought these with us on the ship from Athkatla, along with rats and lice.
It's almost silly to use this sword against them. A broom would be more suitable.
Hey, more loot.
Thankfully, I can now collect all this vendor trash without storage problems.
Another one of these. Hm.
Ok, so this is rather unusual.
This is one of the riddle rooms of the asylum. Apparently the creators of this place decided that smart not completely idiotic = sane, so they put a lot of riddles everywhere and called it a day. The funny thing is that all these can be skipped.
Anyway, let's check the riddles themselves.
Uhm...
Well...
Ok...
Whoa!
You're actually hunting me here? I am quite impressed.
Impressed by the idea, not the execution, mind you.
Because your enforcers suck ass.
And die like flies.
I think we're done here.
Says the one who turns into a bat and flies away.
What is all this crap?
Items that symbolize answers to the riddles in the room.
Oh, great.
Time to use your superhuman intelligence.
Fine.
At night I come without being fetched
At day I am gone without being stolen
A star.
Here, in this place, you swallow me
Yet, were I more, I could swallow you.
Water.
No beginning. No end. I am a symbol of the world's cycles
A circle.
I have seen the mountains rise. I have seen the fall of Netheril
You shall die but still shall I march on.
Time.
Wait, why is this time, and not the hourglass?
I have two heads but one body.
The more I stand still the faster I run.
Because the hourglass symbolizes... Well, the hourglass.
To those within the dungeon I am joy.
To those fully beneath my gaze, I can be hell.
The sundial is also not the sun, because we have this thing for the sun.
Name me and so shall you break me.
Silence.
Ok, I wouldn't have guessed that one.
I will save your life yet you can die by me.
I will settle disputes yet not with words.
A sword.
Seriously, they could have made this item an actual sword, even if unusable, instead of a medallion.
Always do I tell the truth, yet cannot speak.
Look to me and see what really is.
A mirror. Duh.
Two brothers we are, great burdens we bear, all day we are bitterly pressed;
Yet this I will say - We are full all the day, and empty when we go to rest.
Boots, obviously.
Try to defeat me but try in vain.
When I win I end your pain.
Uhm... Death, I guess?
Bingo.
Someone's balls?
Wow, such crap.
And yet another one of these. I hope they do something and not just look pretty.
The Codex has levelled up but we will resolve that in a moment.
I don't suppose this is a fellow inmate trying to prove his sanity?
He tries to kill you, that is a pretty sane behaviour, I would say.
Go drown in a gutter.
Fuck you, pussy!
I am amazing.
With Detect Illusion reaching 100, maybe we can finally use it effectively.
We are only taking Power Attack because it is a pre-requisite for Critical Strike, and Critical Strike + Whirlwind = goodness.
Unfortunately Assassinate does not work with Carsomyr, but we shall get it too, eventually, for some one-round-10-backstabs action with Sword of the Mask. Bonus spell slots have priority over that, though.
I should have known these things will be here too when I saw the goblins.
Mephits are not even remotely a threat at this point.
I kind of hope this will be an exit from here, but no dice.
This is where those three stones are needed, by the way, even if there is no indication for that anywhere.
Oh shit.
FUCK YES! Have you seen that? I am awesome!
The Codex has grown in strength significantly since Windspear Hills dungeon, where he was unable to deal damage fast enough to kill greater wolfweres (without buffs anyway). They grow up so fast. :manlytear:
A demon? I hope I can just kill it, because I sure as hell am not trading away any more stat points.
You can just kill it.
Can I also kill you for XP?
Spoilsport.
Ehm... I mean, it's not bad, but... Well, whatever.
What the fuck now...?
Yeah, like hell. I'd prefer to keep both of my hands, so no thanks.
It is perfectly safe. Trust me.
Fuck. I'm holding you responsible for whatever happens.
More riddles, just great.
I like the idea, but multiple choice answers kind of destroy all challenge here. Betrayal at Krondor did this much better.
Rince and repeat fifteen times, or so.
Creating a separate stone face for each question was quite an overkill if you ask me.
This one's pretty cool.
I really like this one.
Wait, this is almost exactly the same riddle as with the star medallion in the other room. Lame.
Damn it, Bodhi, I am kind of in the middle of something here.
Way to nail the point that it doesn't matter what I do.
Bring it, sparklies!
I hate you so much.
Cleaning up.
And back to business.
Nice.
Quite clever.
Heh, heh, a-hole.
Do people even use sponges in this world?
Beats me.
All this for shitty 5K XP?
Maybe the item is good at least?
Sorry for wasting everybody's time.
Bros, you don't want to be in my way right now. I'm not in the mood.
Like I said.
This is not exactly everything on this level of Spellhold, but the remainder is better left for after exploring the next area, so we will leave it for the next update.
---
Next time: Our hero will fail to put a restraining order on Bodhi and will be forced to unload his frustration on other vampires. Also: more death.
Probably yes, considering how much of Earth's flora and fauna exists on Faerûn.

The calcium carbonate or silica spicules of most sponge genera make them too rough for most uses, but two genera, Hippospongia and Spongia, have soft, entirely fibrous skeletons. Early Europeans used soft sponges for many purposes, including padding for helmets, portable drinking utensils and municipal water filters. Until the invention of synthetic sponges, they were used as cleaning tools, applicators for paints and ceramic glazes and discreet contraceptives.
I am busy with other stuff that needs writing (like reviews for felipepepe's book), so you will have to armour yourself with patience for a little bit more.
Actually, the schedule was all over the place up until Update #13.
First twelve updates were posted between March 2011 and February 2013, so one every two months on average.
#13 to #49 were posted over the course of one year, so around three per month.
I am determined to finish this LP, including ToB, before Pillars of Eternity is released, and hopefully sooner (you may quote me on this if I do not deliver), so expect a schedule that will allow this.

This LP is in no way a suitable replacement for playing Skyrim, unless you keep reading it over and over and over again, which makes for a similar experience.
