Ah, yes, I had a workaround ready for that specific situation. I even used it when exploring that area. It's not in the LP, because I later reloaded and went a different route. Screenshots are still on my hdd, so maybe I'll put it up sometime as a bonus update.

Sweet you're already planning DLC.

Thanks for the page shift. Really sorry, but the update will appear tomorrow. I need one more hour to finish it and have run out of time for today - gotta get up to work in six hours.

A true Bro would update after all the effort that went into the page bump.

Just saying.

Awesome LP, please continue good sir.

I vote in favor of the book swap, I have faith in your abilities to make The Codex squirm in various & fancy deaths even with increased HP.

Update #8: Adventures In Generic Wilderness

Before we start, check this out:
up8_Baldr001.jpg

19 points of reputation only give us 25% discount at Thalantyr's shop, despite the manual claiming it should be 40%. What a ripoff! I smell some fishy tutu thing...

Anyway, we move on, into this non-descript area.
up8_Baldr002.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Why? What's so interesting there?

Nothing, it's just the shortest route to gnoll fortress, where the second stat-boost book is.

codex_m.jpg
More filler then. Aren't you afraid of losing the audience?

What audience?

up8_Baldr004.jpg

Upon entering we are greeted by some non-friendly locals.

codex_m.jpg
A half-ogre. So at least one of his parents was a sick, perverted fuck.

up8_Baldr005.jpg

We try to kill him from a distance, but since The Codex has just arrived, he doesn't have much space to maneuver and ends up running into some skeletons.

codex_m.jpg
I would say that this is starting to look bad...

up8_Baldr006.jpg

codex_m.jpg
...but I'm a major badass now! Here's something for you, half-pervert!

up8_Baldr007.jpg

codex_m.jpg
You boneys don't worry, there's plenty for you too!

up8_Baldr008.jpg

Since The Codex arrived here wounded, we do some resting now when we're finally able to.

up8_Baldr009.jpg

Some starting stats. Killing all those sirines paid off - fighter level up is inbound.

up8_Baldr010.jpg

The rest of the stats. That sirine isn't going anywhere for now.

Onward to exploring!

up8_Baldr011.jpg

Pretty soon, we meet this ogre.

codex_m.jpg
One ogre? No sweat.

up8_Baldr013.jpg

How about two?

codex_m.jpg
Now, definitely some sweat will be involved, at least. Blood also, I think. I'm hoping for no tears, though.

up8_Baldr014.jpg

We retreat all the way to starting point, when there's another half-ogre waiting for us.

codex_m.jpg
I think my bhaalspawn powers are starting to emerge.

How come? It's not chapter #2 yet...

codex_m.jpg
I'm beginning to see the future. It's full of pain.

up8_Baldr015.jpg

The Codex escapes the other way, taking a hit on the way.
Some skeletons decide to join. Yakety Sax ensues!

codex_m.jpg
This isn't funny!

up8_Baldr017.jpg

The Codex manages to make a run for it and take shelter in this place. Only some skeltons follow.

codex_m.jpg
Thank gods for crappy pathfinding.

up8_Baldr018.jpg

codex_m.jpg
OW! FUCK YOU!

One healing potion is used to avoid possible stupid death.

up8_Baldr019.jpg

The last skeleton dies is detroyed.

up8_Baldr020.jpg

After a short 184-hour rest, The Codex is ready to face the full and half-ogres. Unfortunately, it seems these enemies got bored and despawned, because I couldn't find them anywhere on already discovered terrain.

Instead, we continue our journey:
up8_Baldr023.jpg

There's one more ogre at that spawn point.

codex_m.jpg
Is it me, or does it look a bit different from the others?

Oh, right. It's an ogre berserker. I didn't notice.

codex_m.jpg
Berserker, huh? I guess asking is that good or bad is pointless.

up8_Baldr024.jpg

Standard anti-ogre tactics - running away and shooting back with arrows.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck it. This is going to take forever. I'm going to melee this guy.

I don't think...

up8_Baldr025.jpg

...this is a good idea.

Death count: 34

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
Note to self: DO NOT fight ogre berserkers in close combat.

Any more brilliant ideas?

codex_m.jpg
I'm going to backstab it.

Isn't that close combat too?

codex_m.jpg
After it's severely wounded, it will be much easier to kill it with arrows.

If You say so.

up8_Baldr027.jpg

The Codex misses on backstab attack roll.

codex_m.jpg
WHAAAAAAT!? Is that even possible?

up8_Baldr028.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh shit, my face! Safana will never look at me again!

up8_Baldr029.jpg

Death count: 35

Load game.

codex_m.jpg
OK, that backstabbing plan was pretty stupid.

Yeah, I know. I would have said something, but I didn't want to discourage You.

codex_m.jpg
Did I tell you to go fuck yourself, already today? Now I did.

Yeah, yeah. As for the ogre, since both fighter's and thief's approach failed, it's time for some magic!

up8_Baldr030.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Now to think of it, trying to scare an ogre might not be the best of ideas. Maybe I should try paralyzing it?

Too late, spell is off. Besides, let's not waste precious charges, it's just an ogre.

up8_Baldr031.jpg

I actually succeeded... sort of.

codex_m.jpg
IF HE'S SCARED, WHY IS HE STILL CHASING ME!? NOT FAIR!

up8_Baldr032.jpg

The spell also wears off pretty fast.

codex_m.jpg
THIS PLAN SUCKS!

up8_Baldr033.jpg

After a long chase, ogre takes final arrow to the face and dies.

codex_m.jpg
FUCK YES!

Well, that took a while. Back to exploring.

up8_Baldr034.jpg

The ogre spot has an ogrillon waiting for us.

codex_m.jpg
What are these fruits of perversion? Half-ogres, half-?

Orcs, if I'm correct.

codex_m.jpg
I haven't seen a single orc anywhere here. Are they immigrants, or something?

What's the fucking difference? Just kill it!

up8_Baldr035.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Easier done than said. Nice job, bow.

Let's move on, then.

codex_m.jpg
Oh no. I'm guessing there's more of these guys waiting in the fog of war. And I've got something for them...

up8_Baldr036.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Good night, fuckers.

up8_Baldr037.jpg

You were actually right.

codex_m.jpg
Of course!

up8_Baldr038.jpg

codex_m.jpg
AHAHAHAHA! DIE, HELPLESS VICTIM!

up8_Baldr039.jpg

This one didn't fall asleep.

codex_m.jpg
Maybe it wasn't tired.

up8_Baldr041.jpg

codex_m.jpg
HELL, YEAH! Good work, sword!

No more enemies here, so we move on.

up8_Baldr042.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Gnolls. I already forgot that they exist.

I think Your memory will be refreshed quite a bit soon.

up8_Baldr043.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Don't worry, gnoll, you're better off that way.

up8_Baldr044.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Your friends won't even see what got 'em!

up8_Baldr045.jpg

Apparently some resisted Your spell.

codex_m.jpg
I'll kill them even more painfully for making my boast untrue!

up8_Baldr049.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I was kinda disappointed with this sleep spell after the sirines, but it seems it has its uses after all.

Yeah, it helps killing enemies that You would kill with no problem anyway.

codex_m.jpg
But I can do it at least 10% faster now!

After the gnoll massacre, the never-ending journey is continued.

up8_Baldr051.jpg

We've made a full circle around the dge of the area, coming back to spawn point. There's a half-ogre here.

codex_m.jpg
I wonder if two half-ogres can fuse into one regular ogre. Maybe three of them can fuse into an ogre berser?

Yeah. That makes sense.

up8_Baldr056.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Also, if an ogre has 18/00 strength, does that mean a half-ogre has 9 or 18/50? Or maybe 9/50?

What.

up8_Baldr057.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Hell yeah, level up! :yeah:

What? Where? Sorry, dozed off for a moment there.

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, not the most interesting update so far, is it?

That's because You're not dying often enough.

codex_m.jpg
Here a hint: I kinda prefer it that way.

up8_Baldr058.jpg

The Codex reaches fighter level 5.

up8_Baldr059.jpg

Death saving throw is improved - that's always nice.

up8_Baldr060.jpg

Over 40 000 XP worth of killing so far. That's 2667 xvarts or 1143 gnolls or 616 wolves or 149 ogres or 62 dread wolves...

codex_m.jpg
Are you done?

...or 20 sirines. Yes. Done.

codex_m.jpg
Good. Let's go, then.

up8_Baldr061.jpg

We soon run into this happy bunch.

codex_m.jpg
THE CODEX NEVUH SURRENDUHS!

up8_Baldr062.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Finally, an interesting fight!

Are You sure you want to take them on all at once?

codex_m.jpg
What can go wrong!?

up8_Baldr063.jpg

Jemby (mage) is hit by an arrow once, but The Codex has to deal with Teyngan (fighter) now.

up8_Baldr064.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh fuck! Oh fuck! I'm going to die!

Blocked by a meat shield, The Codex can do nothing to prevent Jemby from casting horror, and fails the save roll too. Jemby also panics for some reason. Zekar hits hard with his bow.

up8_Baldr065.jpg

Not an entirely unexpected result.

Death count: 36

Loading.

codex_m.jpg
After rethinking the situation, it will be better to kill them one at a time.

Foregone conclusion if I ever encountered one.

codex_m.jpg
Shut up.

up8_Baldr066.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ok, there they are. Careful now.

up8_Baldr067.jpg

We rule Tayngan away and The Codex goes all medieval on his ass.

codex_m.jpg
Not so tough now, huh!?

up8_Baldr068.jpg

codex_m.jpg
EAT STEEL!

up8_Baldr070.jpg
And here's Jemby. We allow her to cast mirror image, in hope of charming her.

codex_m.jpg
Hey there, lass. Do I need to buy a ticket for your fantastic voyage?

up8_Baldr071.jpg

It doesn't work, but The Codex' resists her horror this time, and she soon dies, spiked with arrows.

codex_m.jpg
BOOYAH!

'Booyah'? What does it even mean?

codex_m.jpg
No idea, but hell if it doesn't sound cool!

up8_Baldr073.jpg

codex_m.jpg
As for the arrow-dealing hobgoblin, I have something I want to whisper into his ear...

That sounded gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course...

codex_m.jpg
Shut up! You're spoling my crowning moment of awesome.

codex_m.jpg
Hey, hobo...

up8_Baldr074.jpg

codex_m.jpg
SNEAK ATTACK, MOTHERFUCKER!

Ouch.

up8_Baldr075.jpg

Looting time.

codex_m.jpg
Look, they were all wearing toupees. Even the girl.

Not going to comment on that, You horrible monster.

up8_Baldr076.jpg

A rather useless mage robe.

up8_Baldr077.jpg

Healing potion. That's always nice.

up8_Baldr078.jpg

The Codex also identifies the cloak found in sirines' cave. It allows him to turn polymorph into a wolf. Not very useful.

codex_m.jpg
I'd rather not turn into something I can easily kill. Ogre berseker? Maybe. Wolf? Forget it.

Moving on.

up8_Baldr080.jpg

codex_m.jpg
This time I almost forgot, that gnolls still exist.

Just a minor delay, I think.

up8_Baldr085.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Indeed.

up8_Baldr086.jpg

codex_m.jpg
You, guys, I remember pretty well.

up8_Baldr087.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Don't blame me You had a red circle around your feet.

I thought You said You don't see the interface.

codex_m.jpg
Interface? Those circles are natural occurence. Everybody has them! How would we otherwise know, who's hostile and who's not?

Oh-kay...

up8_Baldr088.jpg

Some more gnolls.

codex_m.jpg
This time I... Wait, what's going on?

up8_Baldr089.jpg

codex_m.jpg
They seem rather aggressive!

Yes. I wonder what's going on.

up8_Baldr090.jpg

codex_m.jpg
HOLY FUCK!

:retarded:

Maybe You should retreat?

codex_m.jpg
Run away from some filthy gnolls? I THINK NOT! BRING THEM ON!

up8_Baldr092.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yeah! Come on! Is that all You've got!?

up8_Baldr093.jpg

codex_m.jpg
FUCK! You're even more dead now!

up8_Baldr095.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'm not dying here you shitty crapturds!

up8_Baldr098.jpg

One healing potion has to be used, but otherwise The Codex is doing fine.

codex_m.jpg
I'm having a great time too!

up8_Baldr100.jpg

Have to admit, these two last gnolls are pretty badass to still stand up to You after seeing all others die.

codex_m.jpg
Nah, they're just stupid!

up8_Baldr102.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Aaaand CUT!

You're wandering into pun territory.

codex_m.jpg
Spirit of the moment! Couldn't help it!

up8_Baldr103.jpg

We enter some wild dogs' range while looting.

codex_m.jpg
Oh, yeah! More death to inflict!

Is there a remote chance You spare these dogs?

codex_m.jpg
No!

up8_Baldr106.jpg

CARMIC REVENGE: one of the dogs bites back, hard (another healing potion has to be used).

codex_m.jpg
That bitch!

You can't know that for sure.

codex_m.jpg
Not gonna bother checking too!

up8_Baldr107.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Dies anyway!

I hate You sometimes.

codex_m.jpg
I hate you all the time, so go fuck yourself.

After the dog slaughter, we move on.

up8_Baldr108.jpg

codex_m.jpg
So, those were your gnolls, Drizzt? That actually explains a lot.

up8_Baldr109.jpg

A quick 208-hour rest to recover from wounds suffered in the gnoll fight.

up8_Baldr110.jpg

Drizzt is still waiting to thank The Codex for help. I guess must be really shy, if he prefered to walk around in circles for nine days instead of approaching and saying 'thx bye'.

codex_m.jpg
Oh, rest assured, Drizzt. We'll 'talk' later. After I get a wand of summon monster. And some arrows of piercing. And maybe a potion of heroism.

up8_Baldr114.jpg

Area completed!

up8_Baldr115.jpg

We go back to Thalantyr's to sell the loot and buy some healing potions. He only has three to sell, but that's all we need for now.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Next time: The Codex suffers more critical hits than statistically plausible, kills over one hundred enemies... and doesn't level up.

What level are you going to start doing the main quest?

Not that wandering around empty wilderness areas isn't interesting. God knows I forced everyone to experience them.

I don't know if anyone considers it a spoiler, but will tag it anyway:

After the gnoll fortress, I'm going straight to Nashkel Mines and after that to Durlag's Tower, for another stat book (I hope I remember correctly that it is in the upper part of the tower, I'd like to avoid the dungeon if possible). And then plot-wise to Baldur's Gate.

I think You focus too much on those stat books. Stats in 2E werent really that important...

They're more important in 2.0 than they are in 3.5 dude. 19 in STR or CON is huge.

Hmm, inspired by this LP, I decided to play an infinity game on the highest difficulty, and cheese my way out of it.

Decided for IWD, and two characters.

My first encounter were bugs in a basement, free XP.

My second encounter were a few goblins, around 6-8, with bows and arrows. Well, my char's were dead in two hits each.

How the hell do you manage to pull this crap off? Especially with only one char?

The short answer is: I don't. Death count has reached 36 after all, and only a few of those were easily avoidable.

IWD is definitely much more difficult than BG1, since it's balanced for a full party from the beginning, while initial areas of BG are designed for 2-4 chars. There's also much less archer enemies in BG (these tend to hurt the most).
Also, I think (not sure) that in IWD monster mobs are sometimes linked and can detect you from offscreen, if you're fighting their buddies - this is not present in BG1.

Here's two hints:
- A high-DEX archer with a longbow makes one world of a difference, especially in the beginning. Not only will he/she one-shot kill most weaker enemies, but he will also do it almost instantly after clicking (DEX also affects the so-called reaction: initial attack speed), and 2-3 times per round.
- Careful scouting can save Your life often - most 8-enemies mob fights in my LP are done fighting 1-2 of them at a time - I just don't get into the sight range of the others before killing the ones already seen. This can get tedious but is much less frustrating than dying over and over again. This tactics sometimes fails, plus the above mentioned linking can screw your guts, but it's still the basis of survival.

Anyway, good luck, You're going to need it.

I dont agree. 19 CON is huge if You had 18 before, 11 CON from 10 doesnt make any difference at all. Simply put there are a lot of empty stat levels where stat increase for no benefit. DEX from 10 to 15, CON from 10 to 15, WIS from 10 to 14 etc etc. So increasing MAIN stats could make some sense (if its not INT which is rather useless overall). OTOH in 3E all stats matter for some reason.

Update #9: The Smurf Xvart Village

We're still going the shortest possible way to gnoll fortress, which means, this is our next stop:
up9_Baldr000.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Looks average.

We don't get there as planned, however, being ambushed waylaid by enemies on the way.

up9_Baldr001.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Farts! That's kinda funny.

Why?

codex_m.jpg
Because for them, ambushing me is a critical failure at survival.

up9_Baldr002.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwahahahaha! Slaughter.

up9_Baldr005.jpg

After this minor delay, we arrive at our destination. Since The Codex got slightly wounded in the xvart fight (a lucky critical hit on their part), we start with a quick 32-hour rest.

up9_Baldr003.jpg

I already revealed that The Codex won't level up in this update - we would need about 10 000 XP for that.

up9_Baldr004.jpg

Over 400 enemies killed, with sirine(s) still being the strongest of them.

up9_Baldr006.jpg

Some wolf decides to be the first thing we kill in this area.

codex_m.jpg
Maybe it drew the shortest straw?

up9_Baldr007.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ow! The fucker!

Before dying, the wolf approaches and bites hard (with it's first attack, actually). That's second critical hit The Codex suffers today.

codex_m.jpg
And the last one, I hope.

up9_Baldr008.jpg

While trying to rest to recover from the wound, The Codex is attacked by smurfs... I mean xvarts.

up9_Baldr009.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Farts. Wolves. That certainly brings back memories. Not very pleasant ones, too. At least, they die quickly.

up9_Baldr010.jpg

After a quick 80-hour rest, we are ready to move on.

up9_Baldr012.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Is that some kind of joke?

up9_Baldr014.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ow! Shit! Die!

Critical hits suffered in this update: 3

codex_m.jpg
You're not seriously making a counter of that?

Who knows how many more of these wolves we meet. They seem to have some kind of bonus to critical hits on their first strike. Some kind of charging or missile wolves, maybe?

codex_m.jpg
Or maybe they're just lucky.

up9_Baldr015.jpg

Another quick, 64-hour rest before moving on.

up9_Baldr016.jpg

codex_m.jpg
A cave bear! That's more like it!

up9_Baldr017.jpg

codex_m.jpg
And he's down! What a beautiful move by The Codex and his bow!

up9_Baldr018.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Not these guys again!

up9_Baldr019.jpg

They seemed to be guarding something.

codex_m.jpg
What could farts like these be guarding?

up9_Baldr020.jpg

More xvarts?

codex_m.jpg
Fuuuuck!

up9_Baldr021.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Die! Die! DIE! All of you!

up9_Baldr023.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Goddammit! This is some kind of fucking fart-fest.

Yeah, it seems fishy. Let's scout a bit.

up9_Baldr024.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll make sure they don't see me coming.

up9_Baldr026.jpg

codex_m.jpg
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!

Yeah, The Codex' stealth still isn't very reliable. It failed right in the middle of xvart village (no screenshot, sorry), causing a really awkward situation for a moment. Since The Codex had to remove his armour for sneaking, we decide to expeditiously retreat.

up9_Baldr027.jpg

We put some of smurfs xvarts to sleep, to even the odds a bit.

up9_Baldr028.jpg

After retreating some more, we use the spell again, since there's still a fuckload of smurfs xvarts after The Codex' ass.

codex_m.jpg
Die, blue shits!

Soon they're killed. The Codex equips his armour again and we move back towards the village.

up9_Baldr029.jpg

The first bunch managed to wake up already, but now that The Codex is armoured, they're no real threat.

up9_Baldr031.jpg

We decide to try stealth once again, since we're a bit tired of fighting xvarts over and over again.

codex_m.jpg
You can say that gain!

up9_Baldr032.jpg

codex_m.jpg
DIE!

Wait, why are You killing them? Weren't You suppoed to sneak past all others?

codex_m.jpg
I decided they have to die after all. You know, being blue, and shitty, and annoying, and...

Ok, ok, I get it.

up9_Baldr034.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

up9_Baldr038.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds!

More like killer of smurfs, but whatever.

up9_Baldr039.jpg

We wander out of the village, only to encounter one more of these torpedo wolves.

codex_m.jpg
Look like a regular wolf to me.

up9_Baldr040.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Motherfucker!

Told You.

Critical hits suffered: 4

It's the third wolf in a row to inflict a critical hit on his initial attack. The odds of that are something like 1 in 8000.

up9_Baldr041.jpg

A quick 80-hour rest.

up9_Baldr042.jpg

We have traveled south almost as far as possible.

up9_Baldr043.jpg

We take a few steps to the north, and after coming back to the road sign, it is suddenly infested with smurfs xvarts. 30 second have passed, maybe.

codex_m.jpg
That's a sign from gods. They want me to kill every fart in the world, apparently.

up9_Baldr044.jpg

I didn't know You were religious.

codex_m.jpg
When gods give signs like that, I am!

up9_Baldr045.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'm guessing there's more of them hidden in the fog of war.

up9_Baldr046.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What do you know, I was right!

up9_Baldr048.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What is with all these monsters attacking me when terrified? Ogre berserker, I could understand. But farts? Shouldn't they be shitting their pants and running away?

Maybe You're just not that scary-looking.

up9_Baldr049.jpg

Critical hits suffered: 5

codex_m.jpg
Will you stop that!?

up9_Baldr051.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Eat shit!

up9_Baldr052.jpg

A quick 48-hour rest.

codex_m.jpg
No wonder it feels like I've spent a week here already.

up9_Baldr053.jpg

Back to the village... and more smurfs xvarts encountered. Even killing them all here isn't enough, since they respawn here like crazy.

codex_m.jpg
I might still try!

up9_Baldr054.jpg

codex_m.jpg
And here's a gift for all of you hidden just outside the range!

up9_Baldr056.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwahahahaha! Fart slaughter!

up9_Baldr057.jpg

Fighting xvarts feels more like mopping up than combat anyway. Even more so when they're asleep.

codex_m.jpg
I don't know about you, but I'm having a great time! Die, blue crap!

up9_Baldr059.jpg

Careful scouting reveals some more smurfs xvarts just on the verge of sight range.

codex_m.jpg
I've got that covered!

up9_Baldr061.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Not asleep? You die first, then!

Critical hits suffered: 6

codex_m.jpg
What? That was 2 damage only! Barely counts!

up9_Baldr062.jpg

Another group attacks when The Codex moves in to coup de grace the sleeping ones.

codex_m.jpg
The more the better!

I wonder how long does that sleep spell last.

codex_m.jpg
What do you mean?

up9_Baldr063.jpg

I mean, they might wake up.

codex_m.jpg
Shit!

up9_Baldr064.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I think I'm going to retreat a little, just in case.

up9_Baldr065.jpg

codex_m.jpg
This looks like a good defence spot. Die!

up9_Baldr066.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh yeah, who's your daddy!?

up9_Baldr067.jpg

Exploring northern part of the village.

codex_m.jpg
Hi, fart-boy!

up9_Baldr068.jpg

codex_m.jpg
BYE, FART-BOY!

up9_Baldr069.jpg

codex_m.jpg
This looks like a job for...

up9_Baldr070.jpg

codex_m.jpg
...The Codex' bow!

up9_Baldr071.jpg

codex_m.jpg
A little something for your surely-present friends!

up9_Baldr072.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Man, I love being right!

up9_Baldr073.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Meet the sword, dumbshit!

Ok, I think I've had enough of this.

codex_m.jpg
What do you mean?

If you're going to kill every respawning xvart here, this is literally going to take forever. Hide in shadows, and let's move to the unexplored part of the map, shall we?

codex_m.jpg
If you insist...

up9_Baldr074.jpg

We sneak past some smurfs xvarts camping by the village fire.

up9_Baldr075.jpg

There's a cave behind the village, with a bear inside.

codex_m.jpg
First cave bear actually living up to the name. There's not enough space here to run away and shoot back, so I'll just melee it.

You sure?

codex_m.jpg
Yeah. I should be strong enough already, right?

up9_Baldr076.jpg

Wrong, apparently.

Death count: 37

codex_m.jpg
Ok, got a little cocky there. Let's try that again. Maybe now with some more attention.

up9_Baldr077.jpg

The Codex wrestles the bear bravely. It's a surpsingly even fight, but we have the advantage of healing potions.

codex_m.jpg
I also have the advantage of my trusty sword! Don't fail me now, old friend!

up9_Baldr078.jpg

codex_m.jpg
YES! That's what I'm talking about!

up9_Baldr079.jpg

Some ph4t 1007.

up9_Baldr080.jpg

codex_m.jpg
A fail +1?

FLail.

codex_m.jpg
All the same. Won't use it anyway.

up9_Baldr081.jpg

Some bracers that'll keep unarmoured Codex' AC at a slightly more reasonable level (3 instead of 5).

up9_Baldr082.jpg

We also identify sirines' arrows, because we're forced to put them into the quiver, due to lack of storage space.

up9_Baldr083.jpg

It seems there are plenty of smurfs xvarts outside the village too. DO NOT WANT!

codex_m.jpg
Don't worry, I'll take care of it!

up9_Baldr084.jpg

codex_m.jpg
YEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAW!

up9_Baldr085.jpg

A quick 152-hour rest to recover from bear-wrestling wounds.

up9_Baldr086.jpg

The monster respawning algorithms seem to love us at least as much as we love them!

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, I'm actually starting to feel bored with fart-killing too.

up9_Baldr087.jpg

Critical hits suffered: 7

codex_m.jpg
This actually failed as a running gag. You know it, I suppose?

Look, I'm doing my best to entertain people. BUT iT'S A DAMN XVART VILLAGE, FOR FUCK'S SAKE!

up9_Baldr088.jpg

A quick 48-hour rest...

codex_m.jpg
How many days have we actually spent here?

I don't even want to know...

up9_Baldr089.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I bet some farts have been ignoring me resting here for the last two days, camping just outside of sight range. Let's see if that's true.

up9_Baldr090.jpg

codex_m.jpg
It is! What a shock!

KILL THEM! KILL THEM ALL!

up9_Baldr091.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Whatever you say.

up9_Baldr092.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh, hello there, potion of thieving mastery! I didn't expect to find you here!

It's actually the only reasonable loot the smurfs xvarts dropped in this area.

codex_m.jpg
Are we done here?

Almost. I vaguely remember some scripted event that should happen here, with a xvart shaman summonning the cave bear village protector or something like that. It didn't trigger for some reason. Maybe it's because you were hidden or the shaman guy was put to sleep with spells?

codex_m.jpg
Is there something we can do about it?

I have an idea...

up9_Baldr093.jpg

It seems that running through the center of the village didn't trigger the event either. Oh well, it was worth a try.

codex_m.jpg
I HATE YOU SO MUCH!

Just keep running there. And let's not waste an opportunity for Yakety Sax, when there's one.

up9_Baldr094.jpg

That's a fuckload of smurfs xvarts.

up9_Baldr095.jpg

We kill those that follow all the way to the southern edge of the area. One of them drops a shield spell scroll - unknown yet to The Codex. Unfortunately, scribbling fails.

codex_m.jpg
Don't complain, it's the first one that failed since the beginning.

Merely narrating.

up9_Baldr097.jpg

Area completed!

But if You thought, that's enough smurfs xvarts for today, You were wrong! The game makes us meet some more while in transit to Friendly Arm Inn.

up9_Baldr098.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh, for fuck's sake...

up9_Baldr099.jpg

These worgs appeared out of nowhere two seconds later. What the fuck?

up9_Baldr100.jpg

Six enemies in melee... Let's see how that develops.

codex_m.jpg
Come on, give me your best shot!

up9_Baldr101.jpg

And they do. Three times.

Critical hits suffered: 10

codex_m.jpg
FUCK!

Fortunately, The Codex manages to survive that, thanks to the helmet.

up9_Baldr102.jpg

Critical hits suffered: 11

codex_m.jpg
This is getting ridiculous! I'm not dying here, forget it!

Luckily, no such thing happens.

up9_Baldr103.jpg

codex_m.jpg
YES!

We continue our travel and reach the inn succesfully this time. Now, that we're done with that, we'll be very happy not to meet any more smurfs xvarts in this game.

codex_m.jpg
Seconded.

Does the game hear us? Do we make ourselves clear? We surely hope so!
------------------------

Next time: The Codex explores the (hopefully) final non-vital wilderness area, and somehow accumulates some serious wealth in the process.

Those little blue shits were always beyond me. They look like screaming little blue old men, wtf is this? Is this an actual dungeon and dragon monster? Couldn't they just have gone with goblins instead or something?

I thought the Shaman event was part of a mod. Could be wrong though.

I've never played with mods before and encountered it a few times, so it's definitely a vanilla BG thing

The bear is summoned after a named xvart talks to you. If you kill him before he reaches you it won't spawn.
Also, you missed borda :(

Shit. I actually did miss him. Gotta go back there. Fortunately, I just finished gnoll stronghold for update #11, so I will just head straight for him. Thanks for reminding.

As for the named xvart, probably killed him by accident. Didn't see any blue-circled ones though.

Borda finally kicked the bucket, but the amount of death The Codex suffered before that happened is ridiculous. I'll post that epic battle as a bonus update between #11 and #12, and it will feature a separate death counter.

Update #10: Cloud Peak Mountains

Apart from faster XP gain, there's one more advantage of playing solo - lot of excess magical gear to sell, which quickly becomes main source of income.

Baldr000.jpg

codex_m.jpg
1000 GP for a useless fail? Nice.

Baldr003.jpg

We also sell cloak of the wolf, and some other stuff. This leaves us with nearly 8800 gold and a little less cluttered inventory.

Baldr004.jpg

This is our next stop - Cloud Peak Mountains.

codex_m.jpg
Mountains? It looks more like another generic forest.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense for me too.

Baldr005.jpg

We are ambushed waylaid by enemies on the way.

codex_m.jpg
Bald people assault!

Baldr006.jpg

Some dogs appear after a second.

codex_m.jpg
Maybe they were invisible?

Or it is some kind of recurring scripting problem.

Baldr008.jpg

The ambush waylaidation ambush is quickly dealt with and we move on.

Baldr011.jpg

Only to be ambushed waylaid again, this time by an angry mountain bear.

codex_m.jpg
Mountain bear. 50% more free experience than a cave bear

Baldr012.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I love fighting these. I will become a bear-hunter full time when I retire from adventuring.

I think they might be extinct by then already. Basically anyone with a slingshot can kill them without any danger.

Baldr013.jpg

Finally arrived at our destination.

Baldr014.jpg

Still about 5000 XP away from a level up.

Baldr015.jpg

Over 500 enemies killed. Meaning we've slain about 100 smurfs xvarts in previous update.

codex_m.jpg
I don't want to hear one more word more about these little blue pricks. I mean it.

Baldr016.jpg

codex_m.jpg
:rage:

Yeah, they are here too. It seems we might never be free of them.

codex_m.jpg
KILL! KIIIiiIiIILL!!!!11!1!!

Baldr017.jpg

codex_m.jpg
YES! No more farts here! NO MORE!

You do realise there are more hidden in the fog of war, for sure.

codex_m.jpg
Argh! :x

Baldr018.jpg

codex_m.jpg
If they're there, I have a surprise for them!

Baldr019.jpg

5 of 6 asleep. Nice.

Baldr020.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yes! FUCK YOU!

Baldr022.jpg

Thank God for that sign, or I would have no idea how to name this update.

codex_m.jpg
I think that these mountains are a more general location than this area only.

Don't spoil my justification.

Baldr023.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I don't remember meeting this kind of wolf before.

Yes, it's a winter wolf.

codex_m.jpg
Meaning exactly?

Baldr024.jpg

Might mean something like that, for example.

Death count: 38

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
What in hell was that?

These wolves shoot some kind of frost bolts with good THAC0, and quite a bit of damage.

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, I noticed that last one. Any tactical suggestions?

Nope. You probably can take one of these on, with a little luck.

codex_m.jpg
You tend to be useless sometimes.

Baldr025.jpg

codex_m.jpg
There it is. I might have an idea how to kill it not exposing myself to unnecessary risk.

Ok, that might be amusing. Go on.

Baldr026.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Let's see what the wolf says to some Sleep.

Baldr027.jpg

Your magic sucks.

codex_m.jpg
Shut up!

Baldr028.jpg
codex_m.jpg
I'm not finished yet! Horror!

Baldr031.jpg

The suckage continues.

codex_m.jpg
Told You to shut up!

Baldr032.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ow! That's fucking freezing!

It seems, that the luck I mentioned You might need to defeat the wolf, isn't here.

codex_m.jpg
You still haven't shut up!

Critical hit suffered this update: 1

codex_m.jpg
Stop it!

Baldr033.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh yeah! The bow rocks the boat!

One healing potion is used.

Baldr034.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What do we have here?

Winter wolf pelt. A shopkeeper in Nashkel pays 500 GP for each one of these.

codex_m.jpg
Sweet!

Baldr035.jpg

A quick 168-hour rest to recover.

Baldr036.jpg

We meet some talkative gnoll.

codex_m.jpg
Not interested in your life story, dog-face.

Baldr037.jpg

Look, he managed to hit You without a critical hit. He was quite strong.

codex_m.jpg
Yes. Was. Have to admit my armor sucks a little.

Spending 600 GP for a plate armor to change Your AC from -1 to -2 doesn't seem like a worthwhile investment.

codex_m.jpg
True.

Baldr038.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Quite the loot for a shitty gnoll. Is that what I think it is?

Agannazar's scorcher. Yup.

codex_m.jpg
Nice :smug:

Baldr039.jpg

Some 96-hour rest to recover.

Baldr040.jpg

codex_m.jpg
More gnolls...

Well, we are close to their stronghold after all.

Baldr041.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwahahahaha! Slaughter!

Baldr042.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I can smell some more gnolls there.

Baldr043.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Run! Run like headless chickens!

Baldr044.jpg

codex_m.jpg
MwaHAhAhaHa! SLAUGHTER!

Careful, You're losing it.

Baldr045.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What is going on here?

Some hostile and some non-hostile gnolls.

codex_m.jpg
I bet the non-hostile state is temporary.

Baldr046.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Like hell You'll get gold from me. But I might have some steel to spare!

I see You attended Lord Paco's School of Diplomacy & Negotiation.

codex_m.jpg
Top grade student, too!

Baldr047.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Told You they'll become hostile. These gnolls just can't be trusted.

That's one way to see it, I guess.

Baldr048.jpg

codex_m.jpg
FUCK!

Critical hits suffered: 2

codex_m.jpg
Knock it off, already!

Baldr050.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Die, dirty filth!

Baldr051.jpg

Rest attempt is interrupted by a gnoll.

codex_m.jpg
It had a good idea. Killing me when I'm asleep is their only chance.

Baldr052.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Say hello to my not-so-little friend!

Baldr053.jpg

A quick 176-hour rest.

Baldr054.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Cave bear! I smell a level up nearby!

Don't get too excited, we are still quite a lot XP away.

Baldr055.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

Hardly, but whatever.

A few steps further, we encounter a troubled dryad:
Baldr056.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Not that I'm unwilling to help You lass, but maybe we could negotiate some sort of compensation first?

We decide to help anyway.

codex_m.jpg
We do?

Yes.

Baldr057.jpg

These two guys threaten dryad's tree.

codex_m.jpg
Fuckers!

Baldr058.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Why don't you go pick on someone who's not a hot woman?

They don't take interference well, and fight ensues.

Baldr059.jpg

Caldo is quickly cut down.

Baldr060.jpg

Crumm is a little tougher, even managing to hurt The Codex a little.

Baldr061.jpg

Some nice loot.

Baldr062.jpg

You shouldn't need this one, I think. You tend to be pretty blunt anyway.

codex_m.jpg
Critical failure on a sense of humor roll. It happens.

Actually, this girdle should prove quite useful when we come back to defeat flesh golems in sirines' cave, but otherwise it's not as good as girdle of piercing, because it doesn't affect AC vs missile weapons.

Baldr063.jpg

The dryad gives The Codex another healing potion.

codex_m.jpg
A potion? I was counting rather on some other kind of reward.

This is Baldur's Gate, not The Witcher.

Baldr064.jpg

Our final point of reputation is finally here.

Baldr065.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Personally, I considered myself to be quite heroic from the start.

And now the world shares that opinion.

Baldr066.jpg

A quick 112-hour rest to heal.

codex_m.jpg
At this rate, we will reach Nashkel two years after the war with Amn initiated by Sarevok.

Baldr067.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh, look, a single wolf. It's kind of cute to still meet enemies like that.

If You say so.

Baldr068.jpg

The wolf was actually guarding a cave that we missed this time - but we'll come back here later.

Baldr069.jpg

codex_m.jpg
There's something behind the waterfall.

I suddenly feel the urge to play some Gothic or Risen.

codex_m.jpg
Don't get distracted.

Baldr070.jpg

codex_m.jpg
A dead cat. Figures.

Poor animal. Better take it, You never know when something like that might come in handy.

codex_m.jpg
We both know it's needed for a quest.

Baldr071.jpg

Indeed, the cat belongs to this girl.

Baldr072.jpg

A failed Reaction check (low Charisma) means we don't get "daddy will resurrect the cat" dialogue.

Baldr073.jpg

The reward is also lower - no magic scroll for The Codex. Only 23 gold.

codex_m.jpg
Screw You, girl!

Baldr074.jpg

codex_m.jpg
No... Not farts again... I guess I'll just put them to sleep.

Baldr075.jpg

Critical hits suffered: 3

codex_m.jpg
Fuck You!

Baldr076.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'm so fed up with farts, I'm not even enjoying the slaughter anymore.

I don't hink You can get any bonus sympathy for that.

Baldr077.jpg

Back to the previously mentioned cave.

Baldr079.jpg

No enemies here. Just a container.

Baldr080.jpg

Not a bad loot inside.

codex_m.jpg
Not very impressive too.

Let's just call it acceptable.

Baldr081.jpg

A halberd +1. We should get some reasonable money for selling it.

Baldr082.jpg

Area completed!

That was quick. And easy. Too easy...

No level up, though. Let's go back to Friendly Arm inn to empty the inventory.

Baldr083.jpg

We are ambushed waylaid by enemies on the way.

codex_m.jpg
What enemies? There's nothing here!

Baldr084.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh, there it is. One of those 500 GP wolves.

Don't count the GP on a live wolf.

codex_m.jpg
It's only temporarily alive.

Baldr085.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Told you. Didn't even scratch me.

Nice shooting.

codex_m.jpg
The bow rules!

Baldr086.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Hell yes! A level up after all!

I guess, we're lucky. We'll execute the level up after arriving to the inn.

codex_m.jpg
'kay.

Baldr087.jpg

Amsbushed Waylaid by smurfs xvarts.

codex_m.jpg
These fucking delays would be annoying as hell EVEN IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE GODDAMNED FARTS! :x

Baldr088.jpg

Critical hits suffered: 5

codex_m.jpg
I'M GOING TO KILL THE FUCK OUT OF THEM!

Baldr089.jpg

codex_m.jpg
AARRGH! DIE!

Baldr090.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What the hell? An ogrillon? These farts were his bitches, or what?

No idea. Let's kill it and move, but be careful, you're wounded.

Baldr091.jpg

codex_m.jpg
No worries, the fart rapist won't even get close enough.

Baldr092.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What the fuck? They appeared out of nowhere! Invisibility or scripting error this time?

Don't know. A glitch of some sort?

Baldr093.jpg

codex_m.jpg
THE FUCK!?

Critical hits suffered: 6

codex_m.jpg
If You dogshits think you can kill me, you're horribly wrong!

Baldr094.jpg

It turns out they were right, actually.

Death count: 39

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
Ok. Where are we?

We had an autosave before leaving the explored area. Also before the waylaidation ambushes.

codex_m.jpg
And before the level up?

Yes, unfortunately.

codex_m.jpg
:rage:

Baldr095.jpg

Of course, we encounter the gnolls again.

codex_m.jpg
Good. I have something to tell them.

Baldr096.jpg

codex_m.jpg
DIE MOTHERFUCKERS!

Baldr097.jpg

The ogrillon is here too.

codex_m.jpg
Luckily, no farts. Maybe they dumped him?

Baldr098.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Thought you can get me this time? WRONG!

After that, we finally reach Friendly Arm Inn again.

Baldr099.jpg

We keep the wolf pelt and girdle and sell the rest - our gold count goes over 9 000.

codex_m.jpg
Over 9 000?

Yes. IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAND!
---------------------------------------

Next time: The Codex explores gnoll stronghold and belongings, fighting more xvarts than you can shake a stick at.

codex_m.jpg
Obviously, you mean gnolls?

Yeah, I wish...
