Doing whole Durlag's Tower would be kind of pointless, since the upper part was enough to reach the level cap. I will be heading straight for the endgame now, with an occasional stop to get the rest of stat-boost books.

If You want to see the tower explored, oldmanpaco did it in his LP, and probably in a more satisfying way than I would have, since he followed the plot. My LP tends to omit dialogues, as You probably noticed. I'm trying to focus on different aspects of the game here.

I promise to do the whole Watcher's Keep later, though.

I assume you're going to do BG2 ToB with the little ugly Codex then?

Well, Yes. I guess we all know that BG1 is just an appetizer before the dragon-killing bonanza of BG2. :)
That's why I put so much focus on the books (especially the book-swap thing). They really aren't needed to finish BG1, but we'll need every possible edge for the sequel.

Already looking forward to the mounting death toll of BG2. Tried soloing on insane once but didn't have the wherewithal.

Do You intend to add some extra difficulty from mods for BG2? Ascension/Tactics/Whatever? Because with expanded spell arsenal, robe of Vecna (probably avaiable from the start with expected gold You'll have) and removed XP cap that doesnt seem that difficult actually...

Ascension and Unfinished Bussines for sure. As for the others, I will have to read about them first.
I'm also not yet sure if insane is a good idea for BG2, but if mods really do remove the level cap, I'll probably go with it, or at least hard.

Your current avatar fits this kind of 'hardcore' LP very nicely, I think. :P

Will definitely be waiting for that. :salute:

There's a four-reason combination delay. First, I had to do screenshots for update #18 twice, since my savegame crapped out on me (I always make screnshots for one update in advance). Second, update #17 is longest so far, so it takes time to write. Third, we had a p&p session this weekend, which took most of my time (including recovery...). And finally fourth, I had re-encode and re-upload screenshots for updates #1 to #8 to limit PhotoBucket's 'bandwiwtdh exceeding' problem.

That said, I will try to post #17 today or tomorrow. Wednesday at worst.

Update #17A: Durlag's Tower, part I

Alright, noble audience...

codex_m.jpg
Wait. Are you going to explain why so much time has passed since the last update, or what?

Well, there are actually many objective reasons for that.

codex_m.jpg
Such as?

Hm...

drakensang.jpg

codex_m.jpg
No comment.

Let's just move on.

Our sense of adventure and greed for stat-boosting books means our next stop is the dreaded Durlag's Tower.

up17_Baldr000.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Looks kind of squeezed-in between other areas on the world map.

Figures.

up17_Baldr001.jpg

We arrive at night.

up17_Baldr002.jpg

We aren't very close to a level up, but Durlag's Tower gives lots of XP, so we will probably reach the level cap here anyway.

up17_Baldr003.jpg

Revenant will not stay there for long, too.

codex_m.jpg
We're going to fight something stonger than him? I think I want out.

Good loot.

codex_m.jpg
So, who do I have to kill?

up17_Baldr005.jpg

Standard procedure by now: cast Friends before talking to a merchant.

up17_Baldr007.jpg

Erdane is a very convenient in-area shop that really makes exploring this tower much less of a chore. He also has a wand of fire to sell. We're definitely buying, but not just now. It would make exploring the tower too easy.

codex_m.jpg
What? Veto!

up17_Baldr008.jpg

codex_m.jpg
The fuck? 'Battle horror'? What on earth is that?

Oh, You'll see in a moment. :smug:

up17_Baldr009.jpg

codex_m.jpg
It's immune to non-magical weapons!

Yeah, didn't I mention that? Must have forgotten.

up17_Baldr010.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll kill it with magic, then!

up17_Baldr011.jpg

codex_m.jpg
'Slightly wounded'? Is that a fucking joke?

They tend to have a lot of HP, yes.

up17_Baldr012.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ow, it burns! He's got a flaming sword? Dammit, Paralyze!

Good idea, actually.

up17_Baldr013.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Stab! Stab! Stabbity! Stab! And STAB!

He's down. Good job.

up17_Baldr014.jpg

Healing potion. Nice.

codex_m.jpg
That thing had like 55 HP and dealt 20 damage per hit! How was I supposed to kill it without paralyze!?

That's a good question. You won't use the wand against the other one.

codex_m.jpg
What other one?

up17_Baldr015.jpg

This other one.

codex_m.jpg
:rage:

The damage You see in the message box, noble audience, is from Skull Trap cast earlier.

up17_Baldr016.jpg

codex_m.jpg
KamehaMagicMissile!

up17_Baldr017.jpg

You're going to need more of these to stop him, I'm afraid.

codex_m.jpg
I want that wand of fire!

up17_Baldr018.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Shit, no other option. I will fight him with the short sword.

That's probably...

up17_Baldr019.jpg

...a bad idea.

Death count: 63

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
Now, can I paralyze him?

Of course not. We're not done watching You die, yet. :smug: Besides, these guys work as sort of a beef gate here. If You can't defeat them, You're not worthy of entering Durlag's Tower, other than as a tourist.

codex_m.jpg
The Codex is worthy! I will prove it!

That's the spirit.

up17_Baldr020.jpg

Skull Trap doesn't impress the horror.

up17_Baldr021.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Let's see if it can be scared!

Well, its name is 'Battle Horror', so I doubt that.

up17_Baldr022.jpg

Told You.

codex_m.jpg
FUUUUUCK!

up17_Baldr023.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I just have to run away and... FUCK!

up17_Baldr024.jpg

codex_m.jpg
OW, SHIT! It burns!

Yeah, you see what happenned here. No death screen, but the result is obvious.

Death count: 64

Load game.

codex_m.jpg
We need a change of tactics. And more direct-damage spells.

As You wish.

up17_Baldr025.jpg

A quick rest to rehash the prepared spells configuration.

up17_Baldr026.jpg

codex_m.jpg
CHAAARGE!

up17_Baldr027.jpg

codex_m.jpg
12 down. 43 to go!

up17_Baldr028.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Magic Missile x3 for the gentleman in stupid helmet!

up17_Baldr029.jpg

codex_m.jpg
21 down. 34 to go!

up17_Baldr030.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Shiiiiit! Still 28 to go.

up17_Baldr031.jpg

codex_m.jpg
OW! DAMN! FUCK!

up17_Baldr032.jpg

codex_m.jpg
DIE! Please?

up17_Baldr033.jpg

I hate when these things happen. So close to victory, and yet so far.

Death count: 65

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
I'm not doing it.

Why not? You were pretty close there.

codex_m.jpg
You only say that, so I try again and get killed once more. I refuse.

Just once more. If You don't win this time, I'll let You use the wand of paralyzation and we'll buy wand of fire too.

codex_m.jpg
Ok. Fair enough.

up17_Baldr034.jpg

Lightning works better this time. :incline:

codex_m.jpg
20 down. 35 to go.

up17_Baldr035.jpg

Magic Missile also shows some promise.

codex_m.jpg
20 more and we win!

up17_Baldr036.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yes! It's on its last legs now!

His last two legs...? I don't get it.

codex_m.jpg
Forget it! One more spell...

up17_Baldr037.jpg

codex_m.jpg
YES! I WIN!

Don't be so sure...

up17_Baldr038.jpg

...or ok. You win.

codex_m.jpg
HA! I AM AWESOME!

No wand of fire, then.

codex_m.jpg
Yeah! Wait... SHIT!

Don't worry. I'm sure You'll breeze through the rest of the area unstopped. Let's move on.

up17_Baldr039.jpg

Doppelganger!

codex_m.jpg
What? A doped gangbanger?

Yeah, something like that.

codex_m.jpg
Well? Should I be worried?

I don't know yet.

up17_Baldr040.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ow! YOU WANT A PIECE OF ME!?

up17_Baldr041.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, run and squeal like a pig!

It's a reptile, I think.

up17_Baldr042.jpg

codex_m.jpg
It's dead, I think.

up17_Baldr044.jpg

But wait, there are more!

codex_m.jpg
No worries, I've got it.

up17_Baldr045.jpg

You do, huh?

Death count: 66

Loading the game.

codex_m.jpg
Those claws of theirs where awfully sharp. Let's kill them one at a time.

ok.

up17_Baldr046.jpg

First one gets killed rather easily.

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

up17_Baldr047.jpg

The other causes some problems, though.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck you! Eat blade!

up17_Baldr048.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ok, that's not good...

up17_Baldr049.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Sleep!

But it doesn't work - dopplegangers have more than 4 HD.

up17_Baldr050.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Burn, fuckers!

up17_Baldr051.jpg

codex_m.jpg
FUCK! No! I don't want to die!

Run away!

codex_m.jpg
I'm fucking trying!

up17_Baldr052.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yes! Alive!

One of the monsters shits its pants while realizing the awesomness of The Codex.

up17_Baldr053.jpg

After a well placed arrow, the other one joins the pants-shitting.

codex_m.jpg
FEAR ME!

up17_Baldr054.jpg

Soon, they are both dead.

codex_m.jpg
Nice one, bow!

up17_Baldr055.jpg

The Codex was wounded, so rest is required.

up17_Baldr056.jpg

codex_m.jpg
You've got to be fucking kidding me! Respawned already?

Yeah, this is just not fair, game.

up17_Baldr057.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ride the lightning, lizard-face!

Unfortunately the cunning plan to hit them all with the spell fails, and only one is wounded.

up17_Baldr058.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Time for some reptile-burning, then!

This is a rather risky tactics, since The Codex's AC is obviously not sufficient to fight doppelgangers up close.

up17_Baldr059.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Fuck, no!

up17_Baldr060.jpg

Luckily, The Codex manages to survive the gangbanging crisis and retreat. Shooting back makes one of the monsters panic.

codex_m.jpg
Ha!

up17_Baldr061.jpg

The second one panics too.

codex_m.jpg
Yes! I can win this!

up17_Baldr062.jpg

Well, fuck.

Death count: 67

Loading.

codex_m.jpg
Well, these guys aren't as weak as I initially thought. Maybe I could stealth my way through?

I'm all for it.

But that good idea proves unnecessary, because doppelgangers don't respawn this time...

codex_m.jpg
Good riddance.

up17_Baldr063.jpg

Not until we approach the spawn point from the other side, I mean.

codex_m.jpg
:x

up17_Baldr065.jpg

We give the initial one lightning treatment.

codex_m.jpg
UNLIMITED POWER!

up17_Baldr066.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yes... FEAR ME!

up17_Baldr068.jpg

codex_m.jpg
KNEEL BEFORE BOW!

up17_Baldr070.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

Well, that went surprisingly well.

codex_m.jpg
I hope it's the last time I fight these guys here.

up17_Baldr071.jpg

codex_m.jpg
A 'greater' doped-gangbanger? What is this? Some kind of sick joke?

And he's casting a spell.

up17_Baldr072.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mirror image. Fuck.

up17_Baldr073.jpg

Some good shooting is enough to kill off mirror images, but doppelganger is not even scratched yet.

codex_m.jpg
I'm not scared of you, monster... SHIT! RUN!

up17_Baldr074.jpg

codex_m.jpg
EAT PARALYZE, REPTILE SWINE!

up17_Baldr077.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Not so 'greater' now, HUH!?

It also drops Laeral's Tear Necklace.

up17_Baldr078.jpg

Remember when I said that level up is more or less certain here? Well, I didn't expect it to happen before reaching the tower itself.

codex_m.jpg
Oh yeah!

up17_Baldr079.jpg

Sadly, it's the last one in the game. Next one will probably happen all the way in Irenicus' dungeon.

codex_m.jpg
What dungeon? Who's Irenicus?

Don't bother Yourself with that now.

up17_Baldr080.jpg

Save vs Spells improves. The Codex should now get charmed less often. Not that we'll fight many more sirines.
Another level 3 spell should prove useful too. Unfortunately, no level 4 magic for The Codex in this game - except scrolls, of course.

up17_Baldr081.jpg

Improvements to Open Locks and Find Traps couldn't have happened at a better moment too.

up17_Baldr082.jpg

We've gained 16000 XP in this update already. Durlag's Tower is definitely the area that marks style transistion from BG1 to BG2.

up17_Baldr083.jpg

There's a bit of cleaning to do, before we enter the tower itself. Some skeletons on the walls.

codex_m.jpg
You've got to kill battle horrors and gangbangers to reach inside and fight skeletons?

Yes. I know, it doesn't make...

codex_m.jpg
...any fucking sense!

up17_Baldr085.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I've defeated these guys without problem at level 1. So, yes, they aren't much of a threat now.

up17_Baldr086.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What a tedious and boring sweeping...

up17_Baldr087.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ok, scratch that last sentence. Is that a battle horror?

Nope. It's a Doom Guard.

codex_m.jpg
What? You're joking, right?

up17_Baldr088.jpg

Nope.

codex_m.jpg
BURN IT WITH FIRE!

up17_Baldr089.jpg

In retrospect, Agannazar's Scorcher wasn't the best of ideas, since it destroyed 'buffer skeletons' that were protecting The Codex from direct attacks of Doom Guard, making him exposed.

codex_m.jpg
SHIT, SHIT, SHIT!

up17_Baldr090.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Retreat!

up17_Baldr091.jpg

We try to run away and shoot back a little, but in the end we use the golden rule: when in doubt, paralyze it.

codex_m.jpg
Time to do your duty, sword!

up17_Baldr092.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Great job!

Doom Guards have even more HP than Battle Horrors, but they aren't immune to attacks from non-magical weapons, which is better for us right now.

up17_Baldr094.jpg

Finishing up skeleton-sweeping.

up17_Baldr095.jpg

And it's finally time to enter the tower.

codex_m.jpg
I feel as excited as if it was the end of foreplay and time for penetration!

I definitely didn't want to know that.

Doesn't thalantyr sell a ring of free action? I know you will be using spider's bane later on, but i wonder why haven't you bought it if he has it.

You really intend to do the rest of the game without ever winning another level ? It's going to take perseverance and a lot of deaths.

Any way you can remove this level cap, Selva? I want to see how powerful you can get just soloing the game.

Update #17B: Durlag's Tower, part II

up17_Baldr096.jpg

And we're in.

codex_m.jpg
Detecting traps.

I think this level is safe.

codex_m.jpg
I think you might be lying to get me killed, so fuck you.

up17_Baldr098.jpg

codex_m.jpg
'I think this level is safe' MY ASS!

One trap. Big deal.

Actually, there's nothing interesting here - this is the level which You visit when getting here on a tourist trip from Ulgoth's Beard. I think you can talk to the skeleton visible in the screenshot then, since he was unresponsive now.

codex_m.jpg
Tourist trip? Really? I thought you were joking about that.

Uh, no, unfortunately.

up17_Baldr099.jpg

Level completed.

up17_Baldr100.jpg

Time for the second one. This time you should definitely detect traps.

codex_m.jpg
I'm on it!

up17_Baldr101.jpg

A ghast, watch out.

codex_m.jpg
It's just a slightly stronger ghoul, no sweat.

up17_Baldr102.jpg

Uh... what?

Death count: 68

Reloading.

'Just a slightly stronger ghoul'?

codex_m.jpg
Fuck you.

up17_Baldr103.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Here, ghasty-ghasty.

up17_Baldr105.jpg

codex_m.jpg
OW! FUCK! HELP!

up17_Baldr106.jpg

What the fuck...

Death count: 69

Loading.

Am I wrong, or have You defeated ghasts before? You know, without dying. He didn't even paralyze you this time!

codex_m.jpg
Just a string of bad luck, I'm sure.

up17_Baldr107.jpg

Try to kill it before it gets close!

codex_m.jpg
What the fuck do you think I'm doing!?

up17_Baldr108.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Shiiiit! BURN!

up17_Baldr109.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Fuck! I forgot I can't move when this spell is active!

up17_Baldr110.jpg

codex_m.jpg
YES! Burn, motherfucker!

up17_Baldr111.jpg

codex_m.jpg
HA! I pity the fool that would charge into the room seeing that ghast from before.

up17_Baldr112.jpg

Yeah, charging into this room could definitely be a bad idea.

codex_m.jpg
Eep.

up17_Baldr113.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Uh? Sleep?

I don't think it works on the undead.

up17_Baldr115.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Damn! Don't fail me now, sw-

Oh, great.

up17_Baldr116.jpg

*sigh*

Death count: 70

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
I think resting and replenishing my spell supply would be a good idea.

Can't hurt.

up17_Baldr118.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Alright, now I'll show them who's boss!

up17_Baldr119.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Go, web, go!

up17_Baldr120.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Haha, they are so fucked now... Oops.

Retreat!

up17_Baldr121.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

up17_Baldr122.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I see you, little helpless roach!

up17_Baldr123.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Thought you could get me? Wrong!

up17_Baldr124.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Damn, this web is not as effective as I thought.

Ghasts must have pretty good saving throws.

up17_Baldr125.jpg

codex_m.jpg
But they aren't that tough when shot from afar.

up17_Baldr126.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Geez... Another one?

up17_Baldr127.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I don't like your kind, mister!

up17_Baldr128.jpg

We backtrack to the Erdane to sell some stuff. Laeral's Tear Necklace that dropped from the greater doppelganger was definitely worth the effort.

codex_m.jpg
I'd say!

up17_Baldr129.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Sorry, guys, not in the mood to fight you again.

up17_Baldr130.jpg

Back to the tower, detecting traps.

up17_Baldr131.jpg

Some of the containers are also trapped.

codex_m.jpg
I can spot a trap that's most likely bulit into a chest's lock from afar? How does that make any sense?

Well, it doesn't.

up17_Baldr132.jpg

We find some potions. The red one is potion of strength, setting STR to 18 for a period of time. Useless for The Codex, who is normally stronger.

codex_m.jpg
I rule, baby!

up17_Baldr133.jpg

Another trapped chest.

codex_m.jpg
I sense good loot!

Unfortunately, it turned out pretty lame.

up17_Baldr134.jpg

This whole place is crawling with ghasts, it seems.

codex_m.jpg
Not getting killed by these anymore.

up17_Baldr135.jpg

Fighting them is only a challenge in melee. Some circling around the table gets the job done from distance.

up17_Baldr136.jpg

And yet another trapped chest.

codex_m.jpg
Not saying anything about the loot this time, not to hex it.

up17_Baldr137.jpg

It's not bad, actually.

up17_Baldr138.jpg

It's a trap!

codex_m.jpg
Starting to repeat yourself?

Oh, just wait until BG2's vampires and Twilight jokes.

up17_Baldr139.jpg

Level completed!

up17_Baldr140.jpg

Time for the third one.

codex_m.jpg
A library! I predict cool spell scrolls!

up17_Baldr141.jpg

But we only find some books in here. Rather disappointing.

codex_m.jpg
Well, this sucks.

up17_Baldr145.jpg

We meet this Riggilo guy and have a nice chat with him, but he doesn't seem to like The Codex.

codex_m.jpg
And the feeling's mutual.

up17_Baldr146.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Another Wand of Awesome?

up17_Baldr147.jpg

Unfortunately, no. Just a regular wand of lightning. Not that it's a bad thing to find, though.

up17_Baldr148.jpg

And the thing we actually came for - The Book.

codex_m.jpg
I have to say, that was one dumb movie.

Well, there's reason it's called 'Fallout 3: The Movie' by some.

up17_Baldr149.jpg

It's the Tome of Understanding. Reading it won't actually make you stronger in any way. You would have to find three of these to really see any difference.

codex_m.jpg
Well, yes, but I will find three of these, won't I? I mean, there that many in the game... Right?

Sure You will.

up17_Baldr150.jpg

up17_Baldr151.jpg

As I said, raising Wisdom from 12 to 13 doesn't give any bonus at all not even an increase in lore by a single point. Lame.

up17_Baldr152.jpg

We rarely use healing potions nowadays, but anything useful counts as significant loot, I guess.

up17_Baldr153.jpg

We meet a ghost of some unspecified friend of Durlag and try to negotiate with it.

up17_Baldr155.jpg

It doesn't go well (surprise...). The ghost goes hostile and spams a fuckload of spells, disappearing.

codex_m.jpg
It couldn't have gone far.

up17_Baldr156.jpg

codex_m.jpg
There you are! Skulltrap!

up17_Baldr158.jpg

After an embarassing incident of getting wounded by his own Skull Trap and letting the ghost teleport away, The Codex catches up to it in the center of the level.

codex_m.jpg
You're so fucking dead now!

Well, he is a ghost

codex_m.jpg
Don't fucking piss me off!

up17_Baldr159.jpg

codex_m.jpg
That's weird. Normal arrows seem to work fine against him.

Yeah, kind of lame.

codex_m.jpg
Worse. It doesn't make...

...any sense!

up17_Baldr160.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Damn, he mirrorimaged himself. I'll burn them away with Magic Missile!

Good idea.

up17_Baldr161.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What? Immune to magic? The fuck? Is it Borda's ghost, or what?

up17_Baldr162.jpg

He's casting something. Don't let him!

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, kinda working on that!

But, he's immune to magic...

up17_Baldr163.jpg

So, Magic Missile doesn't inflict any damage, but it does interrupt his spellcasting?

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, I know. It doesn't...

...make any sense!

up17_Baldr164.jpg

Who You gonna call?

codex_m.jpg
The Codex!

up17_Baldr166.jpg

A trapped container.

up17_Baldr167.jpg

Two less-useful potions and one mysterious one.

addin.jpg
It is a mystery.

Huh? What was that?

addin.jpg
It is a mystery too.

Again! Heard that?

codex_m.jpg
I heard nothing. You must be going mad. I knew it was just a matter of time.

Let's just move on...

up17_Baldr168.jpg

Level completed!

up17_Baldr169.jpg

Fourth level. It's the last one, I think.

up17_Baldr170.jpg

Some nice loot.

codex_m.jpg
I'm pretty sure my robe is better, but the cloak looks promising.

up17_Baldr171.jpg

Back to the merchant guy to identify and sell some stuff.

up17_Baldr172.jpg

Having all three items (ring/amulet/cloak) of protection will give us maximum flexibility in equipping other magic items. Now, we switch the ring for a cloak for mundane reason - we might find some more rings in the tower and additional equipment slot can be useful.

up17_Baldr173.jpg

The unidentified magic potion turned out to be a 'potion of invulnerability'.

codex_m.jpg
Awesome! I'll drink it right away!

Why? It looks nowhere like other potions of this type we've encountered.

codex_m.jpg
Exactly! Don't you realize what it means?

That it's a deadly poison?

codex_m.jpg
Of course not! It means that the potion's effect is permanent!

I somehow doubt...

codex_m.jpg
Drinking now!

up17_Baldr174.jpg

I guess we can really call that a 'permanent effect'.

Death count: 71

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
I guess it was poison after all.

Seems so, yes.

codex_m.jpg
I am disappoint.

up17_Baldr175.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Well, hello there, Ms. Nice Legs.

Careful, she might be dangerous.

codex_m.jpg
A pretty girl like that? Be serious!

up17_Baldr178.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'm on it!

You actually agreed to help her?

codex_m.jpg
Of course. I can already think of at least twelve ways she will be able to repay the favour.

I'd like to see that... Or no, scratch that. I would most definitely NOT want to see that.

codex_m.jpg
You're just jealous, admit it.

up17_Baldr180.jpg

We find a nice sellable Halberd +1.

up17_Baldr181.jpg

Ghasts!

codex_m.jpg
Not again...

up17_Baldr182.jpg

Unfortunately, yes. And we make the mistake of letting one of them approach too close AGAIN.

Death count: 72

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
That was some fucking stupid tactics there.

If You forget about this incident, I promise to never bring up the 'invulnerability potion' topic.

codex_m.jpg
Deal.

up17_Baldr183.jpg

We decide on a shoot'n'run tactics, as the one that usually yields the best results.

up17_Baldr185.jpg

It's a bit more difficult with three enemies at a time, in an enclosed space, but we manage to kill one.

up17_Baldr186.jpg

We use our Paralyze It Gambit, but the ghast makes a save roll.

codex_m.jpg
Shit!

up17_Baldr187.jpg

Situation looks dire at one moment...

up17_Baldr188.jpg

...but The Codex somehow manages to win unscathed. Sometimes we're just lucky, I guess.

codex_m.jpg
Whew. That was rather intense. Being eaten alive by these things really isn't the best of experiences.

up17_Baldr189.jpg

Another chest promising good loot.

codex_m.jpg
Don't hex it!

up17_Baldr190.jpg

Some magic darts. Should sell for a reasonable price.

up17_Baldr191.jpg

And yet another bunch of ghasts.

up17_Baldr194.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

Distance is the key, as always.

up17_Baldr198.jpg

Back to Riggilo guy, with a gift, I guess?

codex_m.jpg
Here, take this lock of nymph's hair. I'm sure you'll like it!

up17_Baldr199.jpg

He even gave us something in return.

codex_m.jpg
Sucker!

up17_Baldr200.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What? You lied to me? That's... not fair.

Women. I know.

up17_Baldr201.jpg

This XP reward would be much more impressive, if The Codex didn't already reach the level cap.

codex_m.jpg
Not fair...

up17_Baldr201a.jpg

Level completed! And it was the last one, too.

up17_Baldr202.jpg

But we still have some outside to explore.

codex_m.jpg
Such nice legs, she had...

up17_Baldr203.jpg

Heads up! A basilisk!

codex_m.jpg
And she... What? Retreat!

up17_Baldr204.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What the fuck!? It followed me!

Kill it, quick!

up17_Baldr205.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Better idea! Paralyze!

And it worked. Good.

up17_Baldr206.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Go back to the chamber of secrets, reptile!

up17_Baldr207.jpg

That was a lesser basilisk, but there might be some greater ones here too, so we cast a suitable protection spell.

codex_m.jpg
Which I conveniently have prepared, for some reason.

up17_Baldr208.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Not now, gnolls, this spell won't last forever. Go to sleep!

up17_Baldr210.jpg

Sleeping gnolls are easily and quickly dispatched.

up17_Baldr211.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Wow. There really are greater basilisks here!

Who would've thought?

up17_Baldr212.jpg

codex_m.jpg
You-can't-hurt-me-but-I-can-hurt-YOU!

up17_Baldr213.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Another one! These guys are basically free XP, in bulk!

Pity that XP is useless for us now. Oh well.

up17_Baldr214.jpg

codex_m.jpg
And stay down!

up17_Baldr215.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh, look, a stash.

Watch out-

up17_Baldr217.jpg

codex_m.jpg
AAAAARRRGHHHH!

Yeah, it might be trapped.

up17_Baldr218.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ah, whatever, I survived, and the contents are definitely worth a few burns.

up17_Baldr219.jpg

Acid arrows. Would have been be nice to have them when we fought Mustard Jellies.

up17_Baldr220.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Stop spitting on me! I am invincible!

up17_Baldr221.jpg

Uh, mister invincible, your protection spell has worn off...

codex_m.jpg
WHAT!?

up17_Baldr223.jpg

Death count: 73

Loading.

codex_m.jpg
It's all those gnolls' fault. I'm going to fucking kill them!

I think You already have.

codex_m.jpg
I will wait until they respawn and kill them again, then!

up17_Baldr224.jpg

Reloading takes us back to before setting off the fireball trap, so we disarm it this time.

up17_Baldr225.jpg

Luckily, we have another Protection From Petrification ready.

codex_m.jpg
That seems rather unlikely.

Mere coincidence.

up17_Baldr226.jpg

The fight result is quite predictable in this situation.

up17_Baldr227.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Here, let me thank you for our earlier encounter!

up17_Baldr228.jpg

codex_m.jpg
And stay out of my way, or I'll kill you again!

up17_Baldr230.jpg

We meet some doppelgangers on the way to some unexplored spot.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck... Did they see me?

up17_Baldr231.jpg

One did.

codex_m.jpg
Nice, gangbanger. We may yet get along, right?

up17_Baldr232.jpg

But he won't be reasoned with and chases The Codex all the way back into Durlag's Tower.

codex_m.jpg
I'm not running away! I'm just... luring him into a trap! Yeah! That's it!

Well, he's defnitely lured. What now?

codex_m.jpg
Magic Missile!

up17_Baldr233.jpg

And now?

codex_m.jpg
Fuck! Run away!

up17_Baldr234.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Die, fucking reptile!

He's still alive.

up17_Baldr235.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Then, I'll just kill him in mel- FUCK! That hurts!

up17_Baldr236.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Just remebered I have another Magic Missile, heh, heh, heh!

Wow, you managed not to die when fighting a single doppelganger. Congratulations.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck you.

up17_Baldr237.jpg

The other two are passed while hidden, so we don't get too repetitive here.

up17_Baldr238.jpg

And we reach the previously unexplored spot...

codex_m.jpg
Well, I consider it explored now. Let's go back. And fast.

up17_Baldr239.jpg

But of course we have to reach all reachable spots. And we find one letting us kill doppelgangers from distance.

codex_m.jpg
This is a good spot.

up17_Baldr242.jpg

And so, they are killed.

codex_m.jpg
No more gangbanging of The Codex!

The way back is free of incidents like failing a hide check, luckily.

up17_Baldr248.jpg

Area completed! (As much as can be, at least.)

codex_m.jpg
So... Why exactly is this area called 'Durlag's Tower'? We haven't met any Durlag. Have we missed something here?

Nope. Nothing at all. It's completely completed.

codex_m.jpg
You sure?

Yes. Definitely.

up17_Baldr243.jpg

The last enemy we encounter here is a gnol that attacks The Codex on a rest attempt.

codex_m.jpg
What a joke.

up17_Baldr244.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Go bother someone else!

up17_Baldr245.jpg

We manage to rest on a second try.

up17_Baldr246.jpg

This scimitar was found together with acid arrows. It's pretty good, but useless for us, and sold immediately.

up17_Baldr247.jpg

And we finish up by putting the ring of protection into our stash at FAI.

Having all the books that could be currently found on the world map, we will now follow the plot all the way to the city of Baldur's Gate, where there are a few more.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next time: we rob a lot of houses and buy some neat stuff.

codex_m.jpg
Seems like a neat update without any death!

Yes. It definitely does seem so.

That update ended abruptly. Did you post it properly?

Well, no. It seems that it was too long for one post.
Sorry for not checking that. Should be ok now.

Any way you can remove this level cap, Selva? I want to see how powerful you can get just soloing the game.

I can, but won't. It would make the rest of the game - and BG2 - too easy.

I just have to ask: OCD?

Also, maybe I am alone in this but I dont care how you kill some low level, shitty, ridiculously respawning mobs. Just fucking stealth them and only show at least kind of interesting encounters. You are at lvl cap anyway. Faster to BG2.

It can be that you are in some wicked way enjoying this but I pray to all the fr gods that this is not the case.

Credit where credit is due: in the first few updates imo best writing of all the LPs in the playground, except for Barbs one.

Increase the level caaaaaaaap. I want to see an all-powerful Bhaal-spawn kicking ass. :begs:
