I'm a bit late on the thread... but:

Diablo2 did potions pretty well, there are two types, continuous and instantaneous.

They are all easy reachable from the belt by mouse or hotkeys.

Continuous are the various healing and mana potions. They have a set amount of life or mana they regenerate depending on the class of the character, and they have a set speed at which they fill up the life of the character. The speed is set through the game so drinking early will mean almost instantaneous refill, later in the game will mean a significant lag.

Continuous potions are common and can be bought in shops.

Instantaneous are the rejuvenation and full rejuvenation potions. They regenerate a set percent (35 and 100) and fill up both life and mana immediately.

Rejuvenation potions are uncommon and are only dropped by monsters.

Ergo, rejuvenation potions carry extra value, particularly in the late game. A little more depth is provided by that healing potions are actually "time-units with regeneration" so you could chug both a rejuvenation and healing potion and enjoy an extra ounce of safety.

Behind you.
I agree that Diablo 2 does that very well. In fact, one of the problems with Diablo was that you could be immortal so long as you had potions. The continuous potion thing pretty much nixes that idea. However, since there are some bosses that require "HEALTH NOW", rejuv potions fit that bill nicely.

That and the mana shield made the health globe obsolete, so long as you had mana potions..

Ideally, it would be great if a game could sustain multiple ways of healing yourself, via augemented natural/unnatural healing rates (a la perks, traits, feats, etc), potions, healing spells, and first aid like skills, and of course a combination of these. In Lionheart, potions won't be as ubiquitous as they are in Diablo, and a characeter with regeneration or a vampire-like trait could gain health back in ways other than the potion.
