Now that Jake's Datajack isn't a useless, explosive hazard he can use it to play Shadowrun's hacking mini-game. There's not that much to it, especially at the beginning. From the green jewel (your access point) you'll venture onto purple blocks chock full of security programs that really don't want you there and would rather kill you.
Your mission is to figure out a path across the block and over to the whitish data nodes. All around you are squares that may or may not have IC programs occupying them. In my experience they're usually not grouped next to each other. If you run into one Jake will lose a bit of health and jump back to the block he previously occupied. The top most bar in the south-west corner of the screen represents health. If you die here feedback will kill your real body too. The bar below it is the amount of data you've picked up, but that's not a problem right now.
Anyway, if you're sure there's an IC in your way you can either try to go around or initiate combat. Going around may give you the rare peaceful path or more likely present a longer journey and more ICs. Why not always hit the combat button wherever you go and be done with it? Because the combat program is flaky (at least at Jake's low computer skill) and it may not work. Trying it and failing will get you attacked and hurt.
But this one's pretty simple.
Once you reach the nodes all it takes is pressing a button and downloading their sweet, sweet contents.
Then hit the plug and jack out. No real reason to journey back to the access point. Notice that our data file has increased at the bottom of the screen.
A data file *and* free credits? I see a lot of hacking in my future.

Wonder if the info-broker by my apartment would be interested in any of this?

It's awhile before Jake upgrades his equipment. I played the hell out of this game during the break and there's probably enough material for 15 updates. He does eventually get better stuff...and then I go kinda overboard on places that pissed me off before. Catharsis I guess.

Well it's not like we had a great big cache to begin with.
I suppose with your larger health pool now they're just not as effective for anything other than clutch saves.
If you're planning on hiring more Runners it'd be worth upping Negotiation. But hacking Matrix Systems paid off so I can guess where this is going.

Found it while organizing the shots for today's update, and couldn't bear leaving it out. I really like the design.
It does bring up a question however.
Why is it that a company supposedly specializing in and known for computer security has a system roughly equal to schmucks like Glutman? Granted he's probably an Info Broker or even Mr. Johnson, but c'mon. They come up with programs that threaten Drake but can't turn their network into a virtual fortress? Wait till you see the mazes other Corps have.
Exact same layout, you'd think it was made by Matrix.

This little spot outside the monorail station in Downtown is the best farming I've found so far. The Hitmen who spawn on the ledges usually drop 50-60 nuyen a pop, occasionally karma and have glass jaws. To spawn more take a few steps into the station and head right back out.
Get lucky and two will appear at the same time. Cha-ching!
And with that...
Jake's Charisma is maxed out. We can now recruit up to three Runners at the same time.
Thanks to the hacking and a little bit of grind there's enough to hire a new team even after replenishing supplies of grenades and patches. Jake's pistol may not work on some of the newer baddies, but grenades still do and he can also play support roles. Think of him as the tanky healer.

Last time he offered to hire on with us the price was 1,200 nuyen. Those points in Negotiation were well spent.
Equivalent armor but he's got less than half your health, and an inferior pistol.
And his skills are worthless!

After awhile you'd think these guys would learn.
For every squishy magic user there must be a brick to keep him safe. Orcs fit that bill and this one's a few tiers above Orifice or Hamfist.
Judging by his price at least. For 1,000 nuyen you could hire those two and still have change left.

Same health, better armor and much higher quality weapon.
And his combat skills kick our ass.
Negotiation also changes the dialogue of prospective Runners, they'll make note of your increased bargaining skills and generally not treat you like a waste of time. Each point changes it, making me kind of wish I'd documented more of them.
Worse armor and health than Jake, but a better weapon.
His combat skills also kickass. Unarmed Combat leads me to believe Anders really is just a companion version of the Samurai Warrior, complete with close-range chain attack. No complaints here.
Would I have preferred upgrading Jake's equipment? Yes. But for 2,600 nuyen I landed two people with a much higher damage output, who can take a beating themselves, and a mage who can act as support or lend his magical nukes to the attack. Vast increase of threat potential with a modicum of grind.
Our new party arrives and minions just start lining up to die.
Don't look at me, I don't know how he keeps pulling those out of his ass.
Fortunately for Jake's mental health (or not, if anyone recognizes this place) the next door was unlocked.
