Losing XP on Class Change in Planescape Torment?

Hi there, I currently have 23072 experience as a Level 3 Fighter in Planescape. I'm still in the Hive and I only figured out now how to class change into a mage like a retard. When I do, I get knocked down to 7000 experience points. Is this intentional or a bug? Should I have levelled up this whole time instead of running around with 21 hp?

Combat still hasn't been that tough though, hopefully it gets harder.

Imagine you're a trained diver. You decide to switch into an architect. Would you complain that you're not as trained at architecture as you were at diving? Is this a bug?

IIRC, your fighter levels haven't reset, they just became dormant for the sake of abilities. But your hitpoints and weapon proficiencies remain, if I'm not mistaken.
Also, at levels 7 and 12, you get some class bonus stat and some class-oriented tattoo, so it makes sense to switch classes just in time to get the right bonus, and then switch back if you want to get some more levels in fighter, then back to mage again.

It's more like that I "saved the brain power" that would be used to become a better diver, for a potential career switch, since the XP was banked and I never used it to level up.

I suspect the main reason is because it would be a bitch to have a shared XP bank and have it be transferrable between professions. Either way whatevs, more HP on a mage never hurt and i think it's enough for me to get to level 6, which I think is the best outcome.

As Russia is over. The end. implied but didn't outright say, the game tracks xp separately per class. You can change back to fighter at any time and continue from where you left off, and you can add in thief levels later on too if you want too.

your stats shouldn't matter once you recruit more members for your party, all the difficult combats are optional
