Mana Aegis
is an old school side scroller RPG with a modern and main take on gameplay.
http://www.indiedb.com/games/mana-aegis

The game is a side scroller RPG with dynamic gameplay style and especially dynamic class system. You got 2 hands in which you equip whatever you want(be it 2 shields or nothing) and that defines your class while armor helps you gain different stats and abilities. You control the character by using directions and 2 buttons, each button corresponding to one of the player hands.

Check out a lot more info on the link posted above and shoot any questions you might have.
The project is at it's start so we're happy to hear early feedback.

Just please read all the info regarding the game before asking it here again!

Best,
Virgil

Looks alright, but a platformer with stats is not an RPG.

Hey! Take it easy guys, no harsh debates :D I want to bring peace and a great gaming experience here. And love, why not. I bring love :)) No homo. Just straight lovin'

Though I do support the fact that RPG objectively refers to games based on developing your character, evolving certain aspects the game puts at your disposal through various means. Mana Aegis will do that.
Now, we all know there are many types of RPGs from casual to cereal. For this game's purpose, I want to appeal to a larger audience.
I will do that by putting up a fun, simple RPG system. And by simple I mean being able to just play and try out stuff, evolve while advancing forward, not needing to get deeply involved into mind bending skill trees and stats. This doesn't mean you can't strategically hunt the right equipment and evolve right from the start into a perfect warrior, or archer. It just doesn't oblige you to be that guy. This is also due to the fact that half the combat depends on your actual dexterity. Fighting in the right area, pushing the right buttons, etc.

I still invite you to follow our development at: http://www.indiedb.com/games/mana-aegis

I'll hang around this thread like a silent guardian, a watchfull protector, a bat people thingie..

Then I am afraid you came to the wrong place. The RPG Codex is a cesspool of hatred and anger, kicking and screaming at everything that does not meet their standards (which you only do if you were made 2-3 decades ago).

I'm 2.5 decades ago actually. I had my share of good games since the atari2600. This is a one of many reasons why Mana Aegis shares pixel graphics and side scrolling gameplay.

As for a short update here, we plan on releasing the first playable alpha this December. It will of course be free and everyone will be invited to throw in good ol' constructive feedback at us.
Until then, as before, we'll keep everyone posted with weekly progress on indiedb.com

Wrong! We can spit on the most holy of game if we have spare time. No cow is too sacred~

Love, of course, is lunch.

I'll keep an eye on this, but I'll be honest, I'm not much for side-scrolling RPGs in general (going to ignore the 'is this an RPG' thing for now). I'd rather play top-down than side-scrolling.

Why is this thread tagged as 'Incline'?

Also, there is no such thing as 'old school side scroller RPG'. Pixelated graphics do not constitute oldschool, stats do not constitute an RPG. You've given us nothing to work with, no early demo, just a couple of screenshots and gifs, so there can be no feedback at all.

Hey, hey peoples!

Captain obvious note here! I have posted an announcement for the game here as it IS an RPG, fear not and I'm convinced that some of the community will pick up interest in the project! More unusual, yes, but overall it's new and simple to work with for us as players.
- if you wanna jump in and play, go ahead, game design will allow you to advance and finish the game, complete the story
- if you wanna dig in deep, there are classes, sub classes, level ups, stats, items with different rarity and so much more
We are making this cross platform so we're keeping it simple on top but thinking the best and not-so-simple mechanics to put in and combine it all into a great, re-playable adventure.

Hornawkawk - sure, one can't really define old school as we'd be heading way back to pong and pacman, but I am certain that most of us, including you, would be taken to the "bit" games era, where snooping left-right through one level screen to another while jumping at all times to find every secret the game would keep from you, would just rock. Sure, this is by no means how Mana Aegis will make you get through the whole experience as games have simply changed and we expect so much more from our games than finding hidden hearts and the princess across levels. So, "old school side scroller RPG" is evidently the shorter path of describing it all.

We are indie, so pixel graphics is a great means of developing and showing off beautiful visuals. That's it. And while it does contribute to the old-school department(but not constitute it as a whole like you've addressed it), it is not what we aim to underline, it's gameplay.

I know for a fact that our vision of Mana Aegis can't possibly meet everyone's expectations as we're all multi-colored sheep, but we do aim to shoot through the largest scope we can open via the simple, yet complex gameplay mechanics.

We'll be putting up a pre-alpha by the end of this year, most likely in December. I know there's not much to actually "work with" right now but there IS a lot of game mechanics description on our current game project page which I still invite you all to check out.
Maybe leave some feedback regarding what you think of as important, follow our progress or just take a peak, I'm OK with any of your picking!

You know, adding RPG mechanics to a game doesn't automatically make it better. Platform games are a good example.

If you add RPG mechanics it is no longer a plataformer, it becomes a metroidvania, dont it?

Man, if you have hands growing out of your ass and your shit is pixelated - that does not mean it's oldschool.

It feels unnatural that we're going to get smart suddenly and have to define what RPG is at it's core as it's really besides the point. Tzaero - I'd have thought anyone here on RPGCodex already knew this but here goes as I guess you just want to "hear" me say it: RPG - game based on developing your character in a given setting. And don't go searching wikipedia for the 100+ page of RPG types and facts as it's besides the point.

However, to me a game which puts you in the skin of a character and you then have him evolve thoughout the game on physical, psychical level or both - be it the setting perhaps, even none, it an RPG.

Excommunicator: Weird, I played Maple Story and loved it so I dare prove you very much wrong. Not all games get it right but this applies to all genera.

Lhynn: If you want to call it a metroidvania instead of a game or RPG, go for it, I have nothing against unconventional naming :D Whatever floats your boats, peoples.

So, as a summary. I don't see the point of discussing "why" it would be a certain type of game especially when it's so obvious it already would be so. Instead, creative feedback would be awesome, like "WHY do we choose to have RPG elements?" instead of asking "What are RPGs..?"

Last thing here I want is a "fight" lol, I've come to promote the game and hear early thoughts from those who have checked out our game's page for details.

I've come to promote the game
...just like a guy who would promote his momma on porn sites.

Promoting a shitty idea on the RPGCodex and promoting your momma on the transblack.com, which is worse and why? Diskuss!
