The appeal of streams (and to a lesser extent let's plays) is that people like sharing things that they enjoy doing with others. In the past, play was something which was naturally a social activity, one in which a group would participate together and share the experience. Even as early as 20 years ago children would gather around at each other's houses to play video games together, either taking turns or playing on the same console, or what have you, and each could contribute in his own way. Nowadays we live in a super atomized society where people, because of various reasons, don't socialize face to face anymore and instead do so through the ether, a low quality ersatz to the real thing. It's understandable why people like gathering together to watch someone play a game and chat among themselves while being part of an experience in real time. It's a shit state of affairs but there's not much you can do about it unfortunately.
