Its just triggering that Waukeen's Promenade (1 district in BG2) has more shops and quests than 5 districts in Pillars.

Rage inducing.

Well the first town of POE really sucked, there were 3 or so quests, generally of the fedex variety, that had some fake CNC and by fake, I mean you can choose how to complete the quest but the result is almost the same and you WIN!!! either way, with no impact on any other questline. On top of that there was no one else you could talk to, no hidden enemies you could discover, you couldn't enter most of the buildings, no nice items to find, only one shop....

It really felt, quest and exploration wise, like a heavily stripped down "lite" version of BG1 (a game made 17 years ago) with some tacked on fake CNC.

You mean like all the C&C in the IE games (PST is exception of course)?

There's also the matter of your co-reviewer's butt...

They both like DAO and PoE's combat (the biggest part of the game still) is essentially a perfected formula of that so I don't think they'll disagree all that much.

Roxors review will be the one worth reading and conveniently shoved out of the spotlight to please Obsidian.

Might be good for the :balance: but really, it's just two extremes. I reckon he'd give it a Risen 2 treatment from what I've seen which the game certainly doesn't deserve. I'd prefer if someone like Blaine or Felipepe did a second opinion/review piece.

P:E's combat is nothing like DA:O's. DA:O's was based on cooldowns, aggro, and spell combos. P:E's is based on per-rest spells, debuffs targeted at the right defenses, and management of positioning and engagement.

Yeah, DA:O combat is nothing like PoE's. DA:O has free movement and hard counters. :negative:

There's plenty of C&C in BG2:

As with all love quests I believe that the main character's alignment and certainly the reputation score has some influence on the outcome and the reaction of the NPCs. Thus when courting Aerie I would suggest having a high reputation so that she is happy with your party. Moreover, I believe (and this is only a hunch by the way, so if anybody could prove otherwise I would be grateful) is that with Aerie, there are two possible paths you can follow. One of them will result in Aerie asking you to 'sleep' with her in which case you must say NO!! Yes, say NO!!! It is very important that you say no, otherwise she will break the relationship off saying that it has advanced too quickly.

The other path is just pure talking so you just have to find the right answers. This is where the hints come into play! (Yay hay! Straight to the point at last). In choosing the right answers it is imperative that you pick lines, which encourage more conversations with her. You must make her open up to you and in order to do that you will have to ask her questions about herself. When she has problems (she really only has one problem but makes it into such a big problem you sometimes think that she might just commit suicide or something) you will have to be understanding and sensitive.

About halfway through into the love dialogues, there will come a moment when she completely loses it totally and just says that she cannot hack it with the party anymore, or words to that effect. Do not be tricked in doing the super sensitive thing by choosing the option that apologizes to her for not being able to take care of her or whatever and send her packing home. She will leave the party and the romance will finish right there. Instead choose the other option to teach her how to meet life with hope even though her wings are lost.

Another very important thing with Aerie is that during the Ust Natha quests you cannot sleep with Phaere. If you do so then you will lose Aerie for life!!! Instead choose theoption that says 'no...I can't. Then when she asks you what you mean by that then say that, 'I can't...*I can't*' When you say this then she will ask you if you are an eunuch. Otherwise known as impotent, then you just say yes. Aerie will be relieved when you step out of Phaere's chambers. I think that's about all the important aspects of Aerie's lovequest.

Of course. But you would expect that after 17 years they could have done better, after all, this was supposed to be what Obsidian is good at, but POE is a failure in most respects. Honestly it's like a turd with gold spraypaint on top of it. Looks really good but in the end it barely manages to compete with BG1. From what I've played, I think POE only manages to outdo it in character customization, quest design, inventory system and graphics. BG1 on the other hand has better plot, setting, combat system, itemization, spells, BALANCE!!!, mechanics, power curve, exploration, music, voice acting and so on.

The wizard tower had more care on level design and encounter design than some extensive areas of PoE as well... just saying.

Taunt/aggro or engagement, it boils down to the same thing, nearly invulnerable tank/fighter holds the line while you drop down AoE, disables, hexes etc. on the enemy. PoE also has a lot of per encounters abilities that you spam every fight (the difference is no cooldown), somewhat lackluster magic system with few overpowered spells that you'll use over everything else (just like DAO) and the same one optimal tactic beats everything feel for the large portion of the game.

Mind you, this isn't an insult from me, I liked DAO (and think it's a good game) and PoE combat reminds me more of it than IE games.

Do you know what BG1 also had? A bigger budget (in 1998 money).

At least PoE has better level progression than DA:O. A DA:O rogue could be virtually finished by level 8 and then just spend the next 16+ levels taking useless actives while trying to unlock a +5% damage passive.

BG1 on the other hand has better... music ...
I always thought that BG1's main theme sounded like some hack ripped off Danny Elfman's Batman theme and gave it the Hans Zimmer treatment.

POE starts off with your character desperate for diarrhea medicine, for fucks sake, and then in 10 minutes escalates into you surviving some sort of soulnado and discovering that you are SPESHUL!!!. Then you head to a dungeon and find lizards cohabitating with ghosts. And then you find a forest (AKA four clumps of trees) and find ghost babies, spiders, ents, trolls and other things all chilling within viewing distance of each other. And then you are bombarded continuously with infantile SEUOUL!!! nonsense. Pretty retarded stuff really, something only a bunch of amateurs could put together. Compare that to the relative consistency of tone, epicness and scale throughout BG1, IWD, BG2 and PST.

And yes, the Forgotten Realms may be retarded, but it's how Black Isle and Bioware picked and chose elements of the settings and put them together into something thematically consistent. For example, Planescape Torment didn't feature any planar half elves because it wanted to be a world as weird and alien, and BG1 built a nice pseudo-medieval setting out of the sword coast.

Do you know what BG1 also had? A bigger budget (in 1998 money).
Do you know what BG1 also had? To invent the IE-style of RPG from the ground up.

Think of how much time and money they spent figuring that one out, mixing Darklands RtwP combat with Jagged Alliance's NPCs and a bit of RTS accessibility and creating a sub-genre on their own.

The thing is, you can do the reductio ad absurdum thing and make a mockery of every fantasy story line. It's a bit puerile, tbh.

What's wrong with an understated, down-to-earth opening to your story?

and then in 10 minutes escalates into you surviving some sort of soulnado and discovering that you are SPESHUL!!!.
Are you really that stupid? The story immediately makes it clear there are other Watchers, in fact your first task is to go meet one.

Then you head to a dungeon and find lizards cohabitating with ghosts. And then you find a forest (AKA four clumps of trees) and find ghost babies, spiders, ents, trolls and other things all chilling within viewing distance of each other.
What do you have against diversity?

And then you are bombarded continuously with infantile SEUOUL!!! nonsense. Pretty retarded stuff really, something only a bunch of amateurs could put together. Compare that to the relative consistency of tone, epicness and scale throughout BG1 (...) BG2

Anything reads retarded when you write in all caps, mispell things and add three exclamation marks to everything. Do that to Shakespeare and it would sound retarded too.

While i dont know much about all that shit, i agree with the sentiment.

Yeah, PST is very interesting really, because if you look at various factions you can see similarities with various ancient philosophies. The Godsmen who IIRC seek to achieve perfection with their work reminds me of the Hindu concept of Karma Yoga, which is essentially the same thing, striving for perfection and purification through work and duty, while the Dustmen remind me of Buddhism, trying to find the true death, or terminate the endless cycle of reincarnation. Then there's the Sensates which reminds me of hedonistic Charvaka (materialist) sects. Of course PST also had more basic political factions like the Chaosmen, the Indeps and the Anarchists.

POE could have actually have gone even further since it's based on the core concepts of soul and reincarnation but there's nothing Obsidian came up with that couldn't have been thought of by a retarded child.

I have not yet played the game so only a general remark. If someone thinks encounter design and itemisation are anything else than overwhelmingly more important in a combat focused game than the number and diversity of hyperlinks you can click on in dialogue, he isd umb.

Woah! That's, like, totally deep, man.

Of course, that shit was taken straight from Zeb Cook's Planescape Campagin Setting and not some original effort by the PST writers....

People are generally giving them too much credit. Planescape: Torment owes A LOT of its appeal and greatness to the campaign setting.
