We don't need MORE books. We barely get a chance to read the ones we have now.
...your point being?

I am not going to abandon the war and run away to the library.

But the way I see things, Derry is a historian of sorts, and is especially interested in everything that concerns magic. To her - and to me - this source of information would be quite valuable, and it would be nice to know we can have access to it in the future.

By the way, Fangshi. I don't remember if it was asked before, but how many people are aware of the Cycles of Light and Darkness? I mean scholars and mages, mostly, since the others have little reason to concern themselves with these things.

Sure, he already made the offer though he played it off as a joke. If you show interest he will accept. The offer will like stand for as long as the ladies are pretty he likes you.
Does it extend to present company, or just the two of us?

He does not trust you nearly enough to tell you that.
Well, how do we find him if we decide to accept the invitation or conduct a trade?

All told? Maybe two hundred people world wide. It is an academic theory and is current amongst historians, philosophers and mages, no one else cares all that much.

D&T know about it, Serpent knows about it, Lys knows about it, Berty knows about it and that is about it when it comes to your actual staff (though I may be forgetting one or two people).

In the wider world, well, the important people know about it. All the archmages, Albrecht, Timo, Jan, the demon lords, Finn, the Trow, the Forest Giants, the Kings of the fir'Bolg and Skreal, the Heron Guards, some of the soldiers that fought in the wars, and a handful of nobles. Also, as mentioned, most historians, philosophers, some priests and a lot of mages that are powerful enough to begin worrying about it.

Ah, he supposes you could bring the girls and Lys, he technically can't keep Berty out so he can come to. Is that what you meant or do you want to march an army into his halls?

The larger your party, the more hesitant he will be, naturally. He does not want to expose his throat so to speak, there are a lot of 'non combatants' in his halls and it is his solemn duty to protect them.

Cropper can help with that. If Cropper leaves you then ask Berty and he can set something up.

Nah, I meant 'present company' as in 'our companions'. The ones that were invited to his tent and were privy to our conversation with him.

Maybe our apprentice as well. Quite a charming girl. An eight, too.

I take it as a yes - as long as we bring only our close circle of friends above?

Yeah, your friends would be welcome, just no military expeditions he does not want to have to deal with dozens of soldiers.

I am thinking a character index might be useful given all the minor characters running around. This won't replace the character sheets for important characters but it should provide a useful resource in case anyone forgets who some of the characters are. I just need to flesh it out a bit and it should be ready to go.

Character Index:

Appearance: This is just which story line the character has appeared in. Main (M), Serpent/Christine (S&C), Gareth/Brigit (G&B), Amena/Ithapi (A&I), Nanshe (N), Mazzarin/Emrys (M&E) or none. If I have time later I may include first and last appearance but I can see that getting a bit fiddly and I would rather not have to constantly update this list.

Titles: Any formal titles the character has been given or claims for themselves.

Info: General information about the character, just a line or two.

Race: Self explanatory, this is just the race the character is and the region/clan/family they are from.

Allegiances: Any known organizations that the character belongs to or is loyal to.

Relation to the Lost: How they stand in relation to your organization and D&T.

Status: This is just the characters current status, living/dead/otherwise in a unique/important condition.

Anyone else wants to chime in on the battle plan/shapeshifting/elephant issues?

Well, I'd like to chime in some more on shapeshifting that we should really get this since there are some massive benefits to being able to cover distance as the eagle flies or being able to scout ahead with eagle sight or otherwise turn into some monstrous beast in battle or flee like a rat through small spaces or turn into a fish and escape through rivers, oceans, or explore sunken ruins. Or to just shapeshift into another person or race for disguises. And I suspect we'll be able to manage some magic in these forms to boot.

Fangshi, can we ask Finn what was he told about us by Mazzarin? He clearly received some sort of instructions or a warning, but of what kind?

For that matter, what was the reason of his, shall we say, assertive greetings? Is he always like that, or was it something about us?

Sure, as long as you promise not to tell Mazzarin.

When Mazzarin summoned up Finn's host he set the objectives Finn was to pursue and he gave him what information he could on the forces involved, but largely he left the details up to Finn himself to deal with.

He did make a point of mentioning you through and the way he did it was a bit jumbled and, honestly, a bit confusing for the King.

It seemed to Finn that Mazzarin had not figured out exactly what he wanted to tell Finn about the three of you.

He explained that Lys served him in his captivity and that she had once served the Dark. He also explained how Derry and Taide risked their lives to help him.

He seemed to be grateful to you for those services. He also praised your magic abilities and said you had 'definite talent' for 'such young and uneducated mages'.

After a few minutes of praise Finn thought Mazzarin would advise him to seek you out and coordinate his efforts with you since you would be Mazzarin's agents on the ground and he would be coming in fresh. He actually thought you worked for Mazzarin for a second.

But no sooner had the Great Mage finished praising you then he launched into the most withering critique of your choice of friends, decision making ability, and overall competence.

He did not go so far as to say you served the Dark but he was furious about some decision or decisions you had made and about something you had said to him. He managed to catch himself before he said anything significant, instead settling for a sting of profanity and general insults.

By the end of it the King had no idea if he was supposed to be working with you or trying to kill you!

Mazzarin's advise to him was to avoid you and hope you did not try to move south as you 'have a gift for making things messy', whatever that means.

Failing that, he advised the King to prevent you from talking, he said once you got started everything would go downhill...

At the time, Finn thought Mazzarin meant that you had some sort of charming or bewitching magic that required a vocal component though now he thinks he understands what the Great Mage was getting at.

Mazzarin's speech was punctuated by certain words he fell back on time and time again.

They were (in no particular order): 'beautiful', 'infuriating', 'cruel', 'talented', 'stubborn', 'skilled', 'incompetent', and 'brave'.

Naturally all of this made the King want to meet you immediately and he made all of his scout leaders learn your descriptions in case they ran into you.

He asks you once again, not to tell Mazzarin about this. The Great Mage would not react well if he knew Finn was talking about him behind his back.

Nevill said:
For that matter, what was the reason of his, shall we say, assertive greetings? Is he always like that, or was it something about us?

You actually have Cropper to thank for that one. When he was blowing on that horn of his he gave the signal to the Host that he had spotted you (yes they had a unique signal for DT&L ).

As the Host drew near they began to feel the Seekers channeling as well as any mage would.

So they knew you were there, Mazzarin had put all sorts of ideas in Finn's head, and you had a company of battlemages that they knew were casting something.

Finn and his captains decided it would be wiser to incapacitate you and then sort everything out from there since it would minimize the chance that someone would get hurt or that a full fledged battle might break out.

The one fact Finn had no way of knowing was that you had Berty Levy with you and he had a pair of mortars.

Jesus Christ.

We have TWM-2 ('Top Wizard Mazzarin'? 'The Windbag Mazochist'?) on our hands.

Note to self. Penis jokes are srs business among archmages.

Why did Alric even bother with a Myrkridian standart?

Anyone else wants to chime in on the battle plan/shapeshifting/elephant issues?

Can't be asked to find the battle plan in all the mile long posts. Probably fine.
Shapeshifting seems like it could be very useful. We should lean if we can.
I've had enough of Animal justice warriors. Treat them like any of our other soldiers then set them free.

The links are in the update, the links to the update are in the first post of the thread. :)

Which is still unclear. None of our soldiers are slaves. The choice is, do we leave them in their handlers' care, or do we take them under our direct command?

We can actually leave them with their handlers and still free them when it all ends.

And there is still a question of how to free them - if we even want to. Just let them loose and pay for the damages? They are afraid to run away because they are certain the Hounds would find them.

I am not even pushing for the choice one way or the other. What I want is to talk about it. I have not yet voted on it myself.

I think he likes us.

I'm for returning the elephants to their herd, but not if it takes much of our time or has any significant cost. Screw the handlers. I'm fine with them ending up dead.

I think we broke him.
"You would..." he sighs, "Very well, what do you want. Some trinket that will elevate you to the status of a minor god? One of my best spells with which to lay all your enemies low? Enough wealth to buy whole kingdoms? Tell me, what do you want Derryth ó Foghladh? What do you want from me?"

"Your apprentice," the answer rolls off your tongue.

He pulls the hood from over his eyes. He stares at you and you meet his gaze. He looks into you, through you, as if he is trying to fathom your very soul.

He is no longer angry, no longer amused, he is confused, "I do not understand you. You have access to the greatest mage who has ever lived. Magical knowledge and artefacts that most can not even dream of and you choose my middling apprentice," she wilts at those damning words, "Why would you want her? Of all things why her? I... I just do not understand..."
He has absolutely no clue what to expect from us next.

So what do you propose we do about it? When and how?

I'd say don't worry about it until after the battle. There's a chance they all die and it's no longer an issue.
One can hope they all die. I'm tired of all these distractions. We hired weapons, now they're giant four legged people we have to save...

Well, Lyssa seems to care about them, so that's one aspect of the problem.

The other is that the effectiveness of someone fighting for their freedom and someone fighing for their owner is a bit different.

Finally, there is a matter of morale. You don't want an elephant turning around and fleeing over your troops. And that is a surprisingly common occurence.

But I get your point. Leave is as it is and worry about something more important. That is a perfectly valid choice.

This is why I don't like the dogs. We've got eagles, we've got mice, now there's the elephants and everything to care for. Plus the dogs? We're turning into a walking menagerie here and our mobility is gonna blow plus we're getting sidetracked into animal care.

I feel like Nevill is playing Pokèmon here, "Gotta get 'em all!" and all that.

Wut?

Fairies. Covering a day's worth of travel in a few hours. Hounds. The ones that are meant to outrun the prey.

Fairy hounds, as we have seen, could actually outrun the chariots.

4) Battle plan - Nevill plan sounds fine.

5) Vote about Shapeshifting -
sorry, but for now, nope. I don't think we can trust Copper enough to let him fuck us into something that he can forget. He is cool guy and stuff but I don't think he is good man for teaching us anything involve transforming our bodies into something else or magic at all.

6) Elephants - Freeform/C - left it for now, but warn the Hounds about that they can push the elephants too far and that it may end bad for them. IN worst way they dream of. And litte word to elephants We have a bigger deals to make now. I really want to make our own fanatic army of everyone that liked us, but we are really in the middle of war and we aren't in kinder...animal(?)garden. Talk to Lyssa about that we will take care of it later. If she object about something - point her out that we are HOURS from start of the battle that can be key to our next moves. We really try care about everything around, but we are humans for fuck sake, we can't take care about everything for now.

A litte idea about Hounds after battle - we could make sure that something bad happend to worst of them. In stealth way. Fuck faggots. Fuck them hard.

About Mazzarin - woah. He is really... amused and angry about us. I think we remind him about well... himself from the days when he couldn't just wipe out half of the world at will. I really start to like him - even if he sometimes act like faggot. Why? Well - he is good guy, at least for now. He saved world ass from Dark at least once. He have style. He is badass. He could wipe us out long ago and he don't do that yet. And a lot more.

I really start to think about... working for him. In weird way. Maybe one day we could get enough favours to make him tell his story to us. Maybe even teaching us something more.

Doggies - I know how it look but they aren't normal dogs. They want to be treated like normal soldiers? Fine. Treat them like that. They will get their paid, they will get their food, they will get their orders. And maybe a little more care from our Necrodruid.

Fair enough. All I want for now is to stop the abuse, since it is in our power to do so. We can decide what to do with them later.

Not going to work with Faceless out there, I am afraid. The moment we start working with him openly, his rival will consider us enemies and we don't really have the means to protect ourselves.

It would be good for us to remain as 'neutral' as possible. Of course, that's just a dream because they will find a way to involve us in their pissing contest somehow.

I don't think we heard what the dogs have to say on the matter. ;)

My guess is they, like most fairies, would want to laze around, steal food, and troll the locals.
