    Lack of cRPG's aside, they also chose some of the worst jRPG's out there.

    Lists are easy click bait - why bother with votings though - you just pick the usual suspects once a year, shuffle them et voilà you have the best, top, essential RPG of the whatever period of time. Even the codex does that, albeit with Bayesian average. (and if JRPGs were allowed, the Top 70 here would be probably not to different from their Top 50).

    :troll:

    Did they even give a definition what "essential" means for them? I doubt it. Essential should mean that each piece is teaching you something unique about the RPG genre and different from the others. So they should list P3 and P4 together because the are complementary in world building etc.

    :excellent:

    (Non curated lists are stupid, see Wikipedia vs. the Britannica)

    And I don't get what her point is. "Be less bitter. We are in a better world now ... 9/10 what I liked was under siege ..."

    I love how the site is JRPG centric but somehow Final Fantasy Tactics is absent.

    At least no trace of Bethesda so far.

    Why, for the sake of Lower Planes, from all available and unavailable graphics, the redaction chose THAT?! The picture has nothing to do with P:T! The hell is that anyway? Gay jester devil? Bambi Barbarian? Darth Slaughter the Shit Lord? FFS

    It is a JRPG site. It is a miracle there are CRPGs on that list at all.

    Yeah, I don't get it either... his position seems to be "I liked old-school game, but they were gone... I did nothing then and they magically came back, so we should all do nothing!!!11!"

    Too much My Little Pony does this with people, they start to think that just having good thoughts is the solution to everything.

    He doesn't say magically. If I read between the lines of his marketing-speak correctly, he seems to be implying that current AAA games have somehow gone "too far" and now there's a "mid-core" audience looking for something else. In his mind, this "mid-core" audience is distinct and separate from the "grognard" audience that he derides.

    Boulder's Gate II at 13th position. Makes sense: it IS a jRPG and definitely not the best one around. I believe the usage if IE and action taking place in AD&D setting was accidental.

    I have seen plenty of people like that. They claim to like oldschool games but are completely indifferent towards them, and ignore them. Sometimes even only bash them, for well... being oldschool.

    And lol, The Law of Attraction. That thing seems to be a good idiot magnet.

    We should ask him of what he thinks of Pillars of Eternity.

    I never had the impression that you are bitter, just rightfully "elitist" about that not all opinions are equal, unless it's a popularity contest.

    The list seems to be an annual thing, but then the name should be changed to "NeoGAF's annual reader choice". In a real essential list, there is no need for Demon's Souls and Dark Souls only a couple of ranks apart.

    Not really. There are way worse games out there. I don't know about Xenoblades, but there's a hundred JRPGs with truly horrible visuals, bland combat and insipid characters/writing for every game like FF6/7. Chrono Trigger and Dark Souls are solid, although inferior to actual SMT games, P3/P4 are good too (understandably many are turned off by the amount of dialogue etc, but for popular contemporary games the combat/bosses can be very challenging) and Fire Emblem Awakening is decent as well. Though it's nowhere near top 10 quality, it's not the best japanese SRPG, it's not even the best Fire Emblem game. It's just extremely overrated because it's the first entry in the series with mainstream popularity.
    All part of SJWism and :incloosive:

    Every one is entiteled to their opinion. Be respectful of others!!!!

    Bitterness leads to anger;
    anger leads to hate;
    hate leads to being sick of this shit, getting off your ass and showing those fagots how to do it right.

    At least that's part of the motivation in doing the CRPG Book. :3

    I still can't get over of all jrpgs they could have chosen like for instance Valkyria Chronicles or Gungnir, or devil survivor and SMT3 in the same fucking setting they choose persona fucking 3. At least it's not either of the Persona 2 games *shudder*

    Probably because they didn't sell as well as the others in their list.

    People who have not played over 100 rpgs have no business voting in lists like this

    There's worse, but with the exception of Dark Souls and Chrono Trigger, none of these games are particularly good either. The writing in the mainline FF and Persona games isn't what I'd call good, and the combat is the classic random encounters/static menu-driven combat from the 8-bit era (i.e. awful).
