They're really pushing for the mobile game look, and the Tumblr "aesthetics". It seems that the devs have no idea where to take the art direction, the series has always suffered from inconsistency with its art style, in the first game you get the generic dark fantasy look, the second game is the most stylized and a nice mixture of cartoony and dark fantasy, while the third game just throws all that out of the window and goes full rainbows and unicorns.

the art direction of DA4 is even more lame that the devs had to steal from Greedfall.

The devs are clearly uninspired and just going for the current "colonial craze" trend.

I had a friend who worked at EA. He discussed with the guy behind Dungeon Keeper: the mobile garbage game, and the guy told him they should just push the limit (of the mik-o-meter), because this IP was so strong. It turned out pretty well indeed....
A few years later, he was trying to convince the guy in charge of Star Wars Battlefront 2 that paywalling Darth Vader was a big No, but the guy wouldn't listen, which led us to the lootbox disaster.
This is the kind of shit where you tell someone to put it in writing and sign it, then give them exactly what they asked for. It's also the kind of shit where you should consider an exit strategy from your job, but that's usually a fact of life with being a peon for EA.

Bottom line is that it is not only the top management who is at fault at EA. Many of the product managers seem to be into abusing their fanbase...
Top management is still at fault for letting product managers be unaccountable for their fuck-ups.

That said, it works similarly in most big companies that reached the "bureaucratic stage". Upper management is so craven that it will say yes to any unreasonable demand from the top management, regardless of the long term damage for the company, or sometimes, even the feasability of the demand.
It gets worse than that. Sometimes upper management will cover for the incompetence of people below them because they want others to cover for their fuck-ups in turn so it becomes one of those unspoken ways things are done and everyone else suffers.

dragon age always had some of the worse armor designs I've ever seen
I sorta remember the Origins plate design being vaguely inspired by historical armour, but it all went batshit starting with DA2. Like that thing around Hawke's neck, is it a bevor or is she moonlighting as a bulldozer?

the funny thing about that dragon age 2 design. the protected arm on the wrong side. You want the shield arm wearing the heavier armor. As for the neck thing, I think it's supposed to be a gorget, but its way too big and it's supposed to protect your neck. that dragon age 2 thing is just a big hunk of iron strapped to your chest for some reason

also if this was dragon age 3 everything would be covered in shiny chrome plating

I've seen some back and forth around that, with the rationale that you might want to protect the right arm precisely because the left's already covered by the shield. See the equipment of the Murmillo gladiator as an example, manica for the right, scutum for the left.

It's supposed to be a bevor. In the same way that Cyberpunk 2077 is supposed to be an RPG.

It's like the designer kind of knew there was a piece of armor that protected your neck, but didn't wanna bother checking to see how it actually functions. They just kind of went like "im pretty sure it had straps or something"

It's supposed to be a secondary weapon, you doofs. When all else fails, hit your enemy with the pointy end.

Goldman is the guy who became part of the art team around 2008-2009 at Bioware and had a huge influence on the art direction of DA2.

The nice part of being a relative of a jewish banking family is that you can get placed wherever you want.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Actually, the DA2 was not too bad. There were a few competent artists amidst the sea of future tubmlrites, and they actually made decent art.

Now how those designs were executed is an entirely different story.
