This is the RetroSpec remake released in 2003. How the fuck are they expecting people to pay for a 15-year old remake that's been free all this time?

Here you go, knock yourselves out.

Actually I wonder if Piko even have rights over this remake. Having the rights to the original game doesn't automatically give them rights to derivative works. IF they somehow contacted Retrospec team and got the right, well it's their right to sell.

Codex 2014 Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy
From the Retrospec website (whose download links for Head Over Heels are sadly dead, and have been for quite some time):

All games from this site are free and you should not have paid for them. If you have been sold this game please inform us and contact the distributer immediately for a refund.

Yeah that was written back in the time. Piko could have bought the rights to the remake. (I see the remake developers are still working in the industry, so this is pretty probable.) Then again given the history of Piko the opposite is possible, I guess.

Until evidence of that has surfaced, the quote from the Retrospec site still stands.

Meanwhile, I urge everyone to download the absolutely free (it even lacks DRM!) version I linked to above, while it's still there.

Literally selling NES roms at this point lol

I actually hope more publishers to do the same. I still find it ridiculous that third-party publishers didn't dump their entire 8/16bit console library on Steam or some PC platform, similar to Virtual Console service.

Why are those mediocre SNES games priced around 10 EUR?

Capcom is selling their Beat em Up bundle, which has SEVEN great ARCADE games in it, priced at 20 EUR. Why would anyone ever pay 10 for ONE very mediocre SNES game?

Another Piko re-release, Brutal Sports Football:

I think most of their sales happen with heavy discount and bundles ('10 or so retro games for few bucks!') anyway.

Also probably because they sell repro cartridges of them at 20~50 USD (reportedly quality of their carts are not great though).

Looks like DOS or Amiga-version, but there's also superior CD32 and Jaguar versions. Not sure why they even bothered releasing it as I doubt it'll sell many copies, and it wasn't great game even when it was originally released.

Even more Piko.

Apparently they "went through the trouble" (hah) of buying this remake: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1134050/discussions/0/1639793203768156755/

Retrospec did the game without rights or license. We actually own this IP and went through the trouble of buying the game and the IP.

Then we went through the trouble of buying this version from Retrospec.

Also it has a new soundtrack.

Anyway Piko goes on.

Tinhead (1993, Genesis), MicroProse UK's cool-looking platformer:

And does one better:

Piko Interactive said:
There is a sequel being worked on [of Head Over Heels] by one of the original creators. We gave them a license. It is actually made for Atari ST then they will port to other retro and modern systems.

"One of the original creators" can only be Ritman as he handled the coding aspect of the game, while Drummond handled the graphics.

This is HUGE news for the retro gaming community.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw games by Legend Entertainment on steam. Some of these titles have been abandoware for years, but you could still get them from those abandoware sites for
free
if you don't feel like paying five bucks to show all your friends how many hours you have spent on Spellcasting 101. Frederik Pohl's Gateway series might be included in that license unless Pohl's family owns the rights to his name.

From one of the remake developers:

Also, I wonder GOG kinda rejected this? Is this "more than 100 wishlists" a thing?:

I guess I should have put this here:

Mirrorsoft returns, as another re-release label apparently.

DEVELOPER: Image Works
PUBLISHER: Mirrorsoft

ss_14f631158773f8c3c01b0be1c33df77fd7df9004.600x338.jpg
ss_be83426fbf04839f46072b7a8721784888e554d5.600x338.jpg

Who's behind this? Throwback Entertainment, who probably acquired Mirrorsoft assets while buying Acclaim IPs, registered Mirrorsoft trademark in 2017. But Liquid Media Group bought 65 Acclaim titles from Throwback in 2018. Since Throwback has been doing (seemingly unsuccessfully) re-release business under its own name, I'd guess this Mirrorsoft thing is that Liquid Media Group's label.

Apparently they will have more: https://www.gamasutra.com/view/pressreleases/348873/Bombuzal_Returns_to_Steam.php

Lookout for more classic Mirrorsoft titles in the coming weeks.

About Mirrorsoft

After nearly 30 years, Mirrorsoft™ returns with a mission to bring back your favourite games from the past to modern platforms and stores.

For more information, visit us at https://mirrorsoft.com

The website has nothing but a logo.

But snooped around a bit, looks like they have bit more interesting re-releases soon: The Final Battle and Blade Warrior, both were released or acquired by the old Mirrorsoft.

I faintly remember Blade Warrior, but seeing it now I see why it makes for a good choice - that game oozes style.
